1:13 for the uninitiated; you can't do most harmonics using a single coil neck pickup on a 22 fret guitar because the pickup sits underneath the node where the 24th fret or octave would be; the string literally doesn't move at that point and thus there is no movement for the pickup to react to. This is also explains a lot of why many guitarists prefer a 22 fret instrument; even with humbuckers, as one the coils is under that node reducing upper harmonic content and producing a warmer tone.

PRS has such nice guitars, and the Silver Sky is a beautiful guitar... they play and sound great. That being said, I could listen to Greg chat all day. Why can I only take about 5 minutes of Paul?
If it is related to the wire, I would check wire diameter, material, plating, stranding and direction, insulation material, dielectric constant, permitivity, added substances for protection and flame retardents, insulation thickness, foaming the insulation, tension the wire is applied. Could be interesting to look into that.
A great player can make a $100 guitar sound great. True Story! I was at Tech School after Basic Training. A tall slanky kid (Pete) went over to a beat up knock off strat and 70s fender silver face twin at a rec center. He fused with the tuning then slayed some awesome chicken picking. I was blown away!! I didn't know you played Pete ? He replied, I'm from Tennessee where most everyone plays something. I replied, I play too!! Pete said, I know, you're not very good at it!! We all laughed at the table. 40 years later and I still remember what he said!! Cheers!
Marketing apart... those pups stand pretty “high”. Most SRV type of players i know push them pups downwards, almost aligning them with the pickguard. Aged pups also tend to “downsize “ some of the high-end. Kinda like an old whiskey, you loose that initial roughness, leaving only a delayed burn at the end. And all 5 positions work well, all of them sound great... there might be a lot of marketing here, but... he did find something. That’s just my opinion.

Great. GP from '82 and some bushy haired guy offering a new brand of guitars. Photos showing him carving a top. This was Paul Reed Smith. Santana, Al then on. '12 or so, its a Friday and a slow day at work. Said I was sick (was) but stopped by Gelbs in RWC on the way home. Walk in and ask "Why does that cat look like Paul Reed Smith?" Worker, "Because it is." This is like one in the afternoon. I was looking at some Fenders and he strolled by. being sick is why I didn't say Hi.
Lol, they look and sound like an old married couple that bicker a lot. Reminded me of my parents. It’s pretty cute. Kind of forgot they are straight for a moment.
Paul: "it sounds good". (And that's because Greg Koch can make anything sound good.) Greg: "it sounds good". ( but I'd rather play my own designed Fluence pups in my Reverend.) Paul: BTW same pickups as the '63 Strat. Hey Paul, Do you actually think that Fender can't duplicate the same pups that THEY originally made? Fender has a dozen offerings. Paul: "It was painful figuring out how to make that pup". (Marketing hype at it peak.) Paul: "I ask this engineer what was going on". There are a dozen highly reputable pup manufacturers who could have explained it in 20 seconds. PRS pays John Mayer handsomely to play his guitar and like Greg Koch, John can make any guitar sound tremendous....after all John played a Fender Strat on the majority of his hits. If there is a "secret" to it all, it's the player not the instrument. It's the archer not the arrow. It's the driver not the car.
Greg’s amp is a huge factor in his sound too . A recent YT video he’s playing straight in using only the two stage o/d for the amp and the push button on the Reverend . Could never afford or justify a Silver Sky so ...maybe check out a basic Reverend .
A lot of engineers aren't guitar players. They may know how things work but they don't know how to play. Paul catches a lot of crap on the internet. He has done more in his time to improve the playability and reproducibility of the electric guitar than anyone else in his generation. He is nailing pickups now to where all of them are musical and sound good. The guitars don't fight you. They don't need to be tweaked much at all. You just take them off the wall and play a gig with them. If that's bad then you are perfectly welcome to tweak and fight your old guitar. I just want to play music. Period. John Mayer is one of the best artists ever and he can play whatever he wants. And yes he still plays his Fender strats but Fender didn't want to do what he wanted. They did the same thing to Greg Koch and so he went to Reverend. And Greg is a monster player. I enjoyed the video. I met Greg a few months ago after one of his shows and he is a great guy. Still need to meet Paul. Of course Paul talks up his guitars and what PRS is doing as a company. If he wasn't still excited about it he would quit. He will probably die in his office working on the next improvement to one of his guitar models. The man never stops, and i admire him for it. Respect.
rdmkeytohwy Well said . Greg is incredible and deserves to have every decent guitar company offering him time and money for ideas and modifications to any kind of model -Reverend clearly did this . Here in the U.K. Fender has just had to pay a substantial fine for price fixing which is against regulations for the market place . They have been flooding the market with their Player and Vintera Mexican ranges which in turn has pushed up the prices of American made strats which are comparatively cheaper in the states with regard to exchange rates - and you’ll be lucky to get a case or gig bag with your purchase unlike PRS which have great gig bags with their guitars . I have a problem with the PRS neck profiles , uncomfortable but the pickups and quality of wood etc is great .
@@daviddalziel884... thanks man. I always thought the neck carve on PRS's was good. That is all personal preference, though and if it doesn't fit you well then that is fine. Plenty of other choices. I never liked the sound of the old pickups but for the last five years the pickups sound great. Fender's price-fixing is news to me. Not cool. Their unwillingness to push the envelope and innovate will eventually hurt them. PRS has always sourced superior wood so that is nothing new. But it makes a huge difference in how a guitar looks and sounds.

The Silver Sky is a magnificent guitar!!! Well done Paul and John!!! Greg you are a monster!!!
Interestingly, this is the only strat I want and the only prs I want
Liam Tahaney ... Why ?? You get it with a Real Strat ???
Funnily enough I’m the same 😂
Paul is certainly a very proud man 😂 as well he should be.
GREAT VIDEO... SO ENTERTAINING
If Greg does a "T" style guitar with PRS in getting it!!!!!!
that'd be sick. might depend on the exclusivity of his deal with reverend?
“Come ‘ere da once! “That’s how we say it in newfoundland :)
Suhr uses the same material in their V63 pickups as Fender used in their 63 pickup..apparently.
Love your stuff Greg, great interview. And the wind cries La Plaaaata. Get back here everyone has forgotten about the Fishmans!! Still got’em in my LP custom, and they are,,,, dead solid great! So I can say once in your life you were right, go figure? Or what they may say in Michigan? So, all kidding aside , thanks for demoing the Fishman products as I would have never picked them up. Now I’m starring at my PRS, hmmmm? Don’t mention it to Paul.
Please elaborate on how you fedexed John Mayer’s strat! I work for ups and would love to see how you boxed it!
dezionlion .... lol .... and it is a Fender Strat Knock off...
Jamie Morgan ??
I like the tone of some of the PRS but could never bond with the necks on his guitars. I haven’t tried a Mayer PRS yet though. Maybe I should. I did love a modern eagle 🦅 I once played though, it was probably better than a custom shop 1959 Les Paul that I played side by side. Great playing Greg!
Jason Hobbs ... I hate PRS Necks ... they don’t feel comfortable in my hand 🖐
Not gonna lie that sounds unbelievable!
Coleman Dickson ...Unbelievably the same as a Strat...
Come on Paul you know it’s a strat just your magical musical twist to it
jambajoby32 ...You mean " Bull Shit " ....
I'd love to hear Barbara Streisand sing "Good Lovin' Gone Bad".
Wonder if there is any tonal difference between a 3and 3 opposed to 6 in line.?
This is a great interview. Paul is unique and could stand showing a little humility, despite that I think he's a good man and a good heart. I could see his emotion and passion when he was talking about those pickups.
LOL @Paul always tryin’ to reel Greg in, and Greg ain’t havin’ it. Haha.
Wow great interview.
I gotta axe you a question. Ok Paul. I loved this one. Hahaha
Greg’s response followed by the pause at 2:34 is fucking hilarious
Great interview!
I'm buying a new McCarty Just off the tone of this Video. Nice job Paul.
Yeah, i would too.. that last chord sounded heavenly like a harp...
Tone is in the player's hands, not the guitar.
@@mitcharney1
If tone was only in the hands. There would only be one style of guitar. A D-cord does not sound the same on a Tele, than a Les Paul. Even if the same person plays it.
The diminutive Paul Reed Smith.
Pure alchemy! I wanted hard to not like this guitar. Now it's the only Strat I play.
Love Paul.... he has a ´beyond´intelligence.... which makes him special.... he is not from this world.... and that´s why he was able to bring alive the Jhon Meyer´s idea..... Silver Sky.... the ´beyond´intelligence enought to take the Febnder´s tradition, even further..... It implies, taking into account the tradition, validating what comes from ther past, but at the same time, adding NEW ELEMENTS.... for me.... it is the way to define EVOLUTION..... and that´s why not everybody can understand it....
Exactly how big is Greg Koch? I'm thinkin' Godzilla has met his match.
That's funny coming from Tyrion! He's 6'6" or 6'7". I've met him, and I'm 5'8".
Paul is a why guy. Loud, but rightly earned.
Did not get it clearly .. it was the "hire supplying guy" that made the difference?
Greg and a Silver Sky are a great match.
Greg is just as good with his Reverend.
Two masters.
Walk in and ask "Why does that cat look like Paul Reed Smith?"
Worker, "Because it is." This is like one in the afternoon. I was looking at some Fenders and he strolled by.
being sick is why I didn't say Hi.
Glad to see you finally figured out how to make decent sounding pickups!
More of Paul and Gregg!
Damn, these two are hilarious. Xcuse me bein ignorant here, but is Wildwood the same company that produces guitars in S.Korea?
I have to get one
Is Paul high? 10:40 Why does he think that's a Nebula? They didn't make any with a maple board, only rosewood.
I'm a simple cat. I see Greg Koch, I immediately watch the video and click the buttons.😺👍🔔
Also: I don't like the tone of the new 58/15LT pickups, it's like they removed something from them.
Paul sounds good and toasted lol :)
Nick Costa .. Paul is good and toasted...
What amp did he say they were using? Cool video by the way..
@Literally Shaking Thanks man..
What kind of guitar amp is this
A PRS Greg Kock Tele would be Epic!!
PRS: "No matter what mic you put on Barbara Streisand she's not gonna sound like Paul Rodgers"!
All though that would be a huge improvement.
( but I'd rather play my own designed Fluence pups in my Reverend.)
Paul: BTW same pickups as the '63 Strat. Hey Paul, Do you actually think that Fender can't duplicate the same pups that THEY originally made? Fender has a dozen offerings.
Paul: "It was painful figuring out how to make that pup". (Marketing hype at it peak.)
Paul: "I ask this engineer what was going on". There are a dozen highly reputable pup manufacturers who could have explained it in 20 seconds. PRS pays John Mayer
handsomely to play his guitar and like Greg Koch, John can make any guitar sound tremendous....after all John played a Fender Strat on the majority of his hits.
If there is a "secret" to it all, it's the player not the instrument. It's the archer not the arrow. It's the driver not the car.
JM still uses his fender stats in his live shows lol...
Two very unique personalities here.
Muy buen sonido, muy limpio
