Actually you DO want corner slats to look like the way you rejected. It makes for a more custom aesthetic especially after caulking and painting. Professional trim carpenters with an artful eye and experienced decorators know this "dimensional" trick.

Not sure if it’s the lighting or what but in the first part of the video, the cabinets look like a Smokey Grey color and the part where you didn’t do the upgrade on the island, it looks like it’s expresso color and then the cabinets look like they’re a dark blue color from about 1/2 way into the video. I wish my kitchen island was that big, I would have to add about 6” . I would’ve also fixed the drywall, especially how bad it is, regardless that you don’t see it, it still should’ve been done and it wouldn’t have taken that much nor long to fix. I think both ends of the island needs something .

To make it more modern i would have not used the bottom or top trim at all and just made the slats go all the way from the counter to the floor. Or maybe just a 1 inch trim at the bottom to match the 1 inch slats. If the drywall was finished correctly it would have looked fine with just the slats. But to each their own. I like a more modern simple look. The less trim the better imo.

Unfortunately their cabinet doors are shaker with ogee rails and styles. So this chunky slat look clashes with the cabinets, as in badly. They would have had a better look with a wainscot panel look to match the cabinet doors.
Your slats might have worked if they had full overlay cabinet doors that have no ogee.
If you have a router with an ogee bit you could have replicated the cabinet doors with thin rectangular door stop moulding, or find door stop moulding with an ogee.
