It's important to mix it well. Each time you put in insulation, mix thoroughly. Even when it seems mixed together keep mixing. We want to break down that insulation as much as we can.
If too sticky, add a little water and/or insulation. Little bits at a time until you have the consistency you like. If you've added, what you think is enough, and it's still too sticky, let it rest for a while. After about 1/2 hr or so, check it again. Wet your hands then knead the clay, work it for a bit. It might remain a little sticky but that's not a problem. When you use it, you can wet your hands/or utensil so it won't stick to you while you apply it.
Next batch, use a little bit less flour or add in a bit more water. Adjust as needed.
If too dry, add a little water and knead it well. I sometimes add extra compound or glue if I feel it needs it.
Keep refrigerated in covered container for up to 2 weeks.. it may last a little longer but I would use it up within 2 weeks.

I have been watching your videos for a couple months now and last night, I finally made some of this clay following your instructions and it came out fabulous!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! It was easy to do and I love the way it came out! I am making a cave, I used tinfoil and masking tape to shape the cave and then used the clay to make it look real and it is perfect!! Think about how the Grinch lives in the cave above Whoville......I wanted a witch living in a cave above my Fairy world but couldn't figure out how to make a cave and have it look life like, and then I found you!!! You are awesome, awesome, awesome!! I have decided that I need some Gnomes living in my Fairy World now, so time for a small tree!! Yayyy!!!

If you measured the paper insulation and then made slurry of it with some of the 4 & 3/4 cups of water, it would incorporate into the other ingredients more easily (and you would not have as much dust). That way, you wouldn't need to use a mixer to mix in the paper insulation... The paper insulation is very dry and takes a lot of work to incorporate it into the mixture.

Love all your videos, you are such a inspiration. Just a quick note, Walmart has a paint mixer for a drill for only 3 dollars and you can get a drill cheap at a yard sale or thrift shop for 10 dollars. That is what Scott is using in his video. Just make sure it is not a cordless drill because they are not powerful enough for the job. I have just made my trial batch of clay and first small stump. If it turns out I've got something I have wanted to make for years but was afraid to try. I am so excited !!! Thank you for sharing this great talent of yours.

Omg I made my 1st tree 6ft tall 5.5 ft wide in 2011. All I used was joint compound and I super wish I had this recipe at that time!!! Thank you for a very nice and helpful video! I have made a similar clay , I use discarded watercolour paper ( paintings I didn’t like, scraps used for colour charts etc) that I tore in pieces, boiled in water and then mixed to a pulp before mixing it in a ” soup” of wood glue, flour and some dry wall fix. That way, with a very wet paper pulp, there was no paper dust.

Just one thing (from a nurse that loves to build all sorts of things in her free time): Even though cellulose is one of the main ingredients of the insulation material there are often other things mixed in (like mineral wool), and it is treated with all sorts of poisonous substances, to prevent mold and insects and rapid fire. Though I agree that it is most likely safe to work with once it's wet, breathing in the dust can be really dangerous. So please, love, protect yourself by wearing a dust mask during mixing.
absolutely. I do remember saying for people to take caution even though info on google says it's safe to breathe.. I hope I did anyway! I always wear a mask, the amount of dust that comes off makes you want to wear one. And thank you so much for the kind words, I appreciate it :)
I really love all your creations, both crocheted and constructed. I have tried my hand at some homemade clay and didn't want to mess up my beaters. So I found a cheap one on Amazon that came with dough hooks. Perfect for the final mixing when it gets thick! The hooks even work when making clay out of corrugated egg cartons and cardboard boxes.

Wow, I'm really excited with this and the possibilities it opens up. I spent 30 years in the plaster trade and this really makes a lot of things possible. Much better and cheaper than 3D Printing!
I have been using this recipe as well for the past few years I love it so cheap and easy. I like to wet the fiber insulation in hot water and blend it with the beaters to help smooth it a little more then drain it. Also my thrift store beater died so I use my beater attachment in my dewalt drill works great. Great video, it’s nice to see the consistency.
yes, the attachment for the drill works great for sure. Scott Stoll uses that, I never had access to one when I first tried it so kitchen beater to the rescue! I actually just made a couple more batches today, it's so quick and easy to make. I'm forever grateful for this clay!

Just made this, it worked great! At first, it was way too gummy. So I watched again and saw that I didn't have enough water. Added more, and then more paper insulation and it came out GREAT! Although when I put my bare hands into the supposed "no itch - all green" insulation, my hands burned! I used gloves after washing my hands.
Have you ever tried freezing the clay? You may have to add more insulation and re-knead it when you take it out, but I think I would try freezing a ball of it just to see if it works. That way if you can't use it all up at once, you won't have to throw it out. Just a thought. I freeze a lot of stuff to prolong the life of it. Thanks for the recipe. I will be using it. I have a plaster mixing blade, a 5-gallon bucket and a heavy-duty drill. Think I will try mixing it that way since I have arthritis.

A suggestion for mixing ... use a mixer blade with a drill. . Use the mixing blade as a drill bit 🤓

absolutely. But if a person finds themselves without one, like I did years ago when I found the recipe from Scott Stoll, then a kitchen hand mixer works great! A drill and a mixing blade mixes it up pretty fast for sure.

Great video and tutorial. If I may suggest ... Try soaking your insulation in the water and blending it (in a blender!), first! Then the paper will better mix into the recipe, and you may not need to knead it as much. The smaller paper bits will make for a smoother clay, too!

thanks! I'm using a hand mixer but it really is meant to be mixed with the paddle attachment and a drill, if I used one of those it would mix up in a flash! lol
@@WhereTheGnomesLive I meant to put the water and insulation in a blender to mix it up first, THEN add the rest of the ingredients and mix with a hand mixer / paddle attachment, etc. Sorry if I confused you. :)
no, it wasn't confusing. I understood what you meant, I was just saying it would mix in a flash, no blending needed if I had a drill and a paddle. I offer a way to mix if someone finds themselves without those special tools or blender (I actually don't have a blender, *gasp* lol) There's recipes out there that use cardboard or newspaper that get broken down with water and a blender. The paper insulation is broken down already, that's why I use it, but if I ever get a blender I'll give it a try.. although, I am used to this recipe and I can mix it up pretty fast as is, it comes out smooth and it really doesn't take long at all. Thanks for the tips, it's always good to try out new things/ways :)

I think I will like the consistency of this new recipe better😀 I have been making paper clay using your old recipe for a couple of weeks now the first 2 batches came out great the third batch was way to watery so I had to add more paper installation 👍🏾 but it worked. 😁 I have been using it on walls. I tried cooking it at 180 but it took a whole day to dry in the oven so I amped up the temp and it worked great!! I even tried a little critter epic fail😔 But now that I know you can dry it and dry it again I’m going to try another critter lol😂 Thanks again!!!!

Everyone has there own preference as to how thick or thin they want it and depending on what their using. This recipe is perfect.
Also the salt aids as a fast Dry ingredient because salt soaks up moisture.

I still prefer recyled egg carton paper, drink caddy paper, it was already pre battered, and molded, so a soak in hot water turn it into fine paste, then add the other ingredients, and it comes out as smooth as real clay..but a way to add extra strength for it, depending on what your doing...say a mask that gets moved and used, add cut and shredded cotton balls, or old shredded pants fibers...the cloth weaves into it, and make it SUPER STRONG! also i dislike paper insulation, mainly becasue our living room ceiling fell in from it being old and a bad install, and i spent a week cleaning up old paper insulation, hours and hours a day of sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping it up..and breathing in the dust, hacking up black stuff. so yeah...
This is not what a ceramic artist calls paper clay. So I finally understand what a friend of mine was talking about when she talks about paper clay that she found the recipe online.
it's good for the regular person who just wants a cheap clay to build with. I love it since I can make a batch anytime I need some. There's other recipes out there, this is just the one I use. Pretty simple and goes a long way

Love your video. I would have used a rolling pin or glass bottle to flatten it to make the surface more smooth for any projects that have flat surfaces.
thanks! Yes you can roll it out for sure. On walls or other surfaces a wet knife really smooths it out too. Depending on the texture a person wants, it's super easy to work with. Hi, in watching this video, thinking of another technique, I wonder if half way to drying time you added epsom salt larger cristals or glitter, would it stick or could you dip then or brush on a glue I Hodge Podge that won't dissolve the salt. Guess you could use clear glue or whatever. It would have to be something that won't ruin if baked again or else just let sit to dry, hair dryer may work too. I love this technique but even cheaper way is to shred old bills! News paper or whatever. The epsom tho, was in the exmas balls video I seen.

Just wanted to tell you that I have added essential oils to my clay...To hide the smell.
You could also use lemon juice or vinegar to help with mold. You may already know...but it's also an option.

There are 2 sides to foil one side repels the heat one keeps it in. so try using the opposite side to the one you used this time

Can I supersede the cellulose insulation with craft/gift tissue paper? Also, is this safe and/or sturdy enough to decorate a cat tree?
The cardboard heart dries faster than the one on foil because the cardboard is breathable, whereas the foil is waterproof. So heated air circulates right through the cardboard drying it faster! 😁
Tami Elizabeth Allaway actually aluminum foil, esp the “shiny” side REFLECTS heat. That’s why it does dry as fast as cardboard
If you have a old or cheap blender take the amount of salt your going to use . Put it in the blender and turn it into a fine powder. Wait before you open the blender for the dust to settle . Maybe stifling the flour would make the clay more smooth ? It’s a trick I was told by family that made bread dough art years ago. Their stuff was so awesome ! I’ve only used store paper clay to sculpt artist dolls . I like the texture . Not the fact you can only get it in small amounts that cost large amounts . Any ideas ?
It's not the best clay to be using for sculpting fine details but it's excellent for covering larger surfaces. Walls of a dollhouse, mushrooms, masks, paper mache sculptures. To smooth out the surface, a bit of water and a knife works really great!
Question: instead of using the paper mixture that you have in the bag, is there a way that you can use your old newspapers. If it is by shredding them, or any other ideas you may have. Regardless, my question is how can you use your own old used newspaper without having to go out and buy a paper mixture... unless there are other ingredients in that mixture that is bot talked about. Thank you very much.
If you tear up the newspaper and let it soak in water it will soften. Soak for an hour or 2 then put water and paper in a blender for a few seconds srain out the water and you have your paper fibers. I soaked mine for 6 hours once because Igot pulled away and it was falling apert without the blender.
Tanya Winters I have never made paper clay, but your method is also how you make pulp to spread on a screen to make your own handmade paper, you can add leaves and tiny flowers in the pulp for a very fancy paper too!

Could you use soaked newspaper instead of the wall insulation? Or is there something in that that you need?
I believe the soaked papers would work, I couldn't tell you how the texture would turn out though in this particular recipe since I haven't tried it but I would imagine it would be okay since this stuff is recycled newspapers. There's so many homemade clays out there, many using newspapers. I think this insulation works the same just quicker since it's been broken down for us.
Yes, it works, although you have to let the newspaper/flyer turn into pulp, I believe hot water works faster, I usually let the paper sit in a bucket with salt for like 2 days and just strain it out. I make beads that way that is how I know.

I always just throw newspaper into my shredder, then soak it, then run it through a food processor with plenty of water to make my shredded paper.
Thank you,so much for such a wonderful tool. Is the clay when baked weatherize? If so, how long would it remain outside without retai no ing moisture? If not, could Portland cement added to the mix, create a weatherized end product?
I've played around with thin set mortar that you get in the tile section. It has polymers that make it super strong after it dries (& mind blowing light too). I just mix the mortar to a pancake batter consistency add pulp and go. I've made antlers and they are light and super strong!
Make small batches because it will not hold up in storage. I've had sculptures that haven't been painted last the seasons really good so far.
The clay is basically paper mâché. You can varnish the finished product with marine varnish (for boats) and it will last pretty well through all kinds of weather. I'm curious how cement would change the clay. If anyone tries it, I eager to know hoe it works!

Cornstarch mixes best with cold water.
I’ve mixed in in cold water before too but it doesn’t thicken up. I assumed that’s the reason to heat it up for the clay mixture

About a week, in the fridge, I’ve had it last a bit longer than that tho. Just keep an eye on it after a few days
Do you know the absolute thickest it will dry? I need to apply about an inch layer of it to a form I'm working on.
Edit: applying 1 inch thick is fine. It was used to make a large plug for a mold (stryofoam form underneath) and it worked great. About 20 gallons of clay were made. It took about 4 days to dry with applying fans on the surface. Careful not to apply the fans too close at first because it will crack if it dries too fast. The plug doesn't need to last very long so we are not worried too much about mold forming later on, however we did add a few cups of simple green to the mixture and sprayed the finish product with bleach.
the thicker it goes on the longer it takes to dry. I've never done an inch thick layer so I couldn't tell you how long but would imagine that would take a couple weeks to fully dry inside,. To be honest, I wouldn't be comfortable with doing a layer that thick, I would worry about mold. When I need a thicker layer I do a few thin layers, drying each layer before adding another layer.
Sometimes you can get bread dough hooks that fit on your mixer that would work well
Can a few drops off essential oil be used rather than the chemical stuff to keep it smelling fresh? I don’t want to get chemicals on my skin and would like to not have to wear gloves if possible. Thanks so much uploading.
I've never tried it myself with essential oils but I believe that would work. The stuff I used was just to mask the starchy smell, that goes away after it's dry anyway.
peppermint extract detours bugs if you are using flour in mixture.
For those who might be a bit worried about the flour, I've never had an issue with bugs with this clay. The clay cures hard. I've been building with it for many years, I've never seen mold or bugs in or around any of my builds. The guy who came up with the original recipe used it for years longer than I has never talked about bugs being an issue. But with that said, good to know that peppermint is a deterrent. It does deter more than bugs, for those interested, google the other things peppermint oil will repel. It's good stuff!

In place of the insulation could you use paper from a schreddar
Have you ever used toilet paper instead of the insulation for a smoother clay?? I’ve seen this quite often and the clay looks not as lumpy. But of course it does depend on what your using it for.
yes, it's just a different method. Jonni Good has the toilet paper recipe, she uses it for sculpting. This clay I'm using is good for bark, walls, and things not needing finer details.
Can I use elmer's glue? I’m making two very large life size trees for our churches children’s room for decor. I’m talking 5ft trunk and then branches coming out. So I need bulk supply and tacky glue is more expensive but I’m willing if it helps with the integrity of the clay.

Hello! I am going to give this a try this morning and am excited about it. I looked up how to make your own insullation and its basically newspaper. I am gonna try that and see what happens. Do you have insight as to if the insullation is truly necessary? To help achieve the texture, I am cutting up egg cartons and am going to try to mix that in with the paper. Should be fun!
You could tear newspaper into small peices and chop it in a blender.

I noticed you had 2 cupfuls instead of 2 cap full of mr clean in your recipe above...I know its a minor thing but I also know someone will put 2 cup fulls instead of cap fulls and be disappointed. I got the goods now I just need a mixer...lol xoxo stephie

I'm hoping toilet paper will work because I don't have the money to buy insulation! I've made paper clay before, but it was too stiff. I like this recipe. I just don't have insulation.

No, you have to use an exterior sealer to make it weather proof. I’ve never done it myself but others have and said it works great for them. Best of luck and have fun!
Mod Podge makes an exterior/outdoors formula!!!
Coat with a layer of Paverpol, that will make it waterproof
Is there a problem of mixing paint INTO the clay at the start? Would that prevent it from drying?
my only worry about that would be not knowing when it is completely dry. The clay takes a long time to dry, I rely on what I see to determine when it's dry before I paint it. The clay needs to be dry before painting and sealing.
I have a lot of paper egg cartons, so I’m going to be using those with your recipe. My question is: After I make pulp out of the cartons, can I dry it (spread out on a cookie sheet) and save it when needed? I like the idea of adding dry pulp to the liquid rather than the other way around.
that's an awesome question! I've never tried it but I would assume it would work as the paper insulation is made up of recycled paper materials and paper egg cartons are too. That's the main reason why I like this recipe , the paper insulation has been broken down already for me. I'd give it a shot and see how it turns out for sure, I've often thought about trying it out with newspaper but I never thought about storing it away for future use (I just love that idea!)
Love your work. I'm looking for the best way to make a large tree in daughters room. What are the advantages of this clay over simply applying drywall compound and cutting texture into that? Thanks for your input!
you could try a test patch of the drywall and see how it holds up to cutting in lines once it's been painted. I haven't tried it. I've only ever used drywall compound for flat surfaces. Sorry, I wish I had a better answer for you.
