  • How To Make STRONG Air Dry Paper Clay - No Cracking.
Hi, a lot of you asked me about the clay I am using in my videos. Some of you had problems with your air dry clays because you had a natural ones that cracked when dried. Natural clays are not good for my kind of projects. If you cover a jar using natural clay it shrinks, resulting in a lot of cracks all around the jar. I was using “Das modelling material” - amzn.to/2r5FEHY , a great paper clay, but since not all of you were able to find it, I searched for a paper clay recipe that anyone can prepare at home. I found this great recipe here www.ultimatepap....
I tested it and I made sure it doesn’t crack, and is very strong. I really like how smooth it can be and all the details you can make with it. It dries fast and is super strong. I like the result so much! You can keep it in the fridge for 5 to 7 days.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ENGLISH
For making the clay I used one roll of toilet paper that weights about 40 grams without the tube, 100 grams of all purpose flour, 100 grams of cornstarch, 150 grams of school glue, 250 grams of joint compound (wall putty - it's used for fixing cracks in walls, is gypsum based, and you can find it in hardware section at stores, by the silicone and paints) and 40 grams of baby oil or olive oil.
You start by placing the toilet paper in warm water so it disintegrates easier. Squeeze out the excess water and start adding the other ingredients. I added the glue first, then I added the joint compound, flour, oil and cornstarch. You can add water when mixing if you feel that the paper clay is too dry.

    Frequently Asked Questions:
    1. What clay do you use?
I use a paper clay. I either buy it or make my own depending on what I want to create
    2. What's the difference between the bought paper clay ( amzn.to/2r5FEHY )
and the homemade paper clay (A) ruclips.net/video/LkYGfBz_MTU/видео.html
    (B) ruclips.net/video/_Ef-U6aZEoI/видео.html ?
The homemade one is not that soft and is only good for textured surfaces like stones and tree bark. It is very cheap to make so it might worth to sand it and work it a little more than buying a paper clay. However, you can't keep it more than 5 to 7 days in the fridge. It has the best consistency when you just made it and it's fresh, so I would recommend you use it in the same day or the next and don't make more than you need
    3. Can I use air dry clay? What's the difference between air dry clay and paper clay?
Often times shops will sell both paper clay and ceramic clay with the same label "air dry clay". It's true, both are air hardening but there are quite a few differences: air dry clay(ceramic clay) is actually mud, natural clay, while paper clay is made with cellulose and other ingredients. Paper clay is stronger than air dry clay(ceramic clay). Air dry clay (ceramic clay) shrinks and the paper clay does not shrink. This is why paper clay is the better choice for my kind of projects. My projects usually require you to cover a jar or a plastic bottle. If the air dry clay shrinks and the bottle or jar remain the same size... you guessed it... your air dry clay will crack all around. It might be a lot cheaper but it's not what you need for these projects.
    4. My clay cracks, how do you cover the cracks?
You don't, you change your air dry clay to a paper clay! See why at the previous question
    5. How to waterproof my paper clay creations?
I recommend using a yacht varnish. Apply a few coats and make sure you cover it all around so no water touches your clay
    6. What brand of paper clay do you use?
    I use "Das modelling material" - amzn.to/2r5FEHY
    7. Where can I see the list of materials?
As a general rule of my channel... READ MY VIDEO DESCRIPTIONS! I write it for you guys, is no secret what I use. For every video I write a description of what I do and what I use.
    8. Do you sell your creations?
No, not yet, my daughter loves them too much.
    9. What colors do you use?
I mostly use watercolors and acrylic paint.

Thank you so much for this information. I am making props for a Girl Scout mystery party, and I am using your paper clay mixture here to make fake stones, fossils, bones, and other clues for our mystery. We have a very limited budget, so we’re making everything by hand out of recycled material. I found everything I needed for your paper clay recipe already in my garage or pantry, and we got a lot of fake rocks and other items made today!

Which recipe of paper clay do you like to work with? Yours or Jonni's. They are slightly different. You have two that I have seen. One you use the joint compound powder. And Jonni uses the ready made. And the process and measurements are slightly
different. What brand of powdered joint compound do you use and set time? 15,30,90 min?

Hello just wanted to ad a little tip add 2 table spoons plain white viniger to the water you soak the tolet paper in this allows you to keep the clay much longer i have used it up to a month old unrefrigerated .the plain clay starts to stink and mildews quickly without the viniger . the finnished clay workes just as good as the orgnial recipe and dries scentless hard and no cracks

Natisha Grineage she squeezes it out so I’m sure it doesn’t have to be specific just enough to soak the paper. Could be wrong but that’s what it looks like to me and I’m going to give it a go that way.

    This clay is awesome.
You can even use it in silicone molds, and you don't need to let it dry first, before making a new one.
You can take it out wet, and let it dry.
That comes in handy when you need to make more of the same stuff.
So you dont need to wait a day, to let it dry, before you can make a new one.
This clay gives super detailed molds.
I like it better than Das clay.
Das is rather stiff, and is not easy to spread out.
And Das is expensive, at least here in the Netherlands.
All the ingrediants used for the self made clay, are very cheap here at the action store.

I have used the toilet paper method but I have also used pulp made from mat board that I soak and then blend in a blender. I soak it so the color side floats off and the back paper floats off because they have a different consistency. So I just use the core and it is very soft and easy to blend in a regular blender. Then I dump it into a fine mesh seive and let most of the water run out and then squeeze out most of the rest. I then press it into a 4 cup glass measure for a double batch. It has a nice off-white color. It is exactly what I want as it is a little more fibrous and has an organic look to it. I have been a paper maker for many years and am loving the versatility of the paper clay now for more rigid sculptural forms.

Thanks for the recipe! I've tried it out, but I used plaster instead as I can't easily get joint compound. I found it was too doughy with plaster, but perhaps using less flour and more plaster than the recipe says will make it better. I did discover that one of the shops in this country sells the clay you buy from amazon. So anyone living in Scandinavia, plus Finland, Clas Ohlson sells it.

I definitely have a question.. For your recipe for paper clay using joint compound, can you use the ready to use (already wet) joint compound instead of the dry/powder??? And if so, how does that change the liquids in the recipe? Oil, water ect. (should I add less of that or more of the flour and cornstarch?

    • @CreativeMom
      @CreativeMom  5 лет назад +4

Hi, somebody tried and said that you need to add a little bit more wet joint compound than the recipe. About 10% or so more joint compound. That is the only change

    250 grams = 1.1 cups = 8 oz - drywall joint compound

      100 grams = 3.5 oz so not quite 1/2 cup. 150 grams = 5 oz. 250 g = 8.8 oz or a little over 1 cup (not 2. - 2 cups would be 500 g) 40 grams = 1.41 oz or 3 tbs (almost) liquid measure. and 40 g toilet paper = approx 1.41 oz in weight

Thank you Nancy for the correction.
Funny thing is I typed in several times into google "8.8 oz equals how many cups" and I kept getting "2 cups". It seemed to much but since that was what kept coming up that's what I put down.
However after your comment, I again typed into google "8.8oz equals how many cups" this time it came up with 1.1 cups - I guess you just needed to get involved LOL :)
Now I know why my mixture kept coming out to dry - I thought it was just because I was using PVA wood glue which is thicker than the Elmers PVA glue.

Question: Can I add salt into this creation to keep it from getting any mold after I store it.

    • @SaucyMuffins
      @SaucyMuffins 6 лет назад +3

You bascially just need to make sure it's 100% dry and never gets wet again. On the off chance it does get wet, make sure to dry it completely (fans, heater vent, outside if you're somehwere hot and dry). I always coat my creations with a waterproof sealant to ward off mold especially because my husband has mold allergies. Can't be killing him with my art LOL. It's a good idea in general to coat paper creations once finished anyways to keep them from leaching moisture from the air.

What is the difference between this recipe and the eggcarton paper mache you have used before? I have had real success tearing up the egg cartons, soaking in hot water, straining, adding white glue and corn starch, and then I generally use a stick blender to make it really smooth. It lasts for days in a tupper ware container, goes on so easily, dries fast and very light. I can sand it and carve it and have had no cracking problems. It is so cheap and easy to use and I learned it from one of our videos. I just customized it to fit my needs.

Here is the conversion that I worked out. I made a batch with the neighbourhood kids and it worked great.
40 grams of toilet paper: It works out to about 4 sheets to a gram or 160 sheets. It also is close to a firmly packed 1 cup measure.
100gram of flour = 2/3 cups. I used an instant blend flour by Robin Hood. It is very fine and pours almost like salt.
100 grams of corn starch = 2/3 cups.
250 grams of joint compound = 1 + 2/3 cups. (I used something called "sheetrock 90" that I bought at Rona)
150 grams of while glue = 2/3 cups. You can use white school glue, carpenter's glue, Aylmer's glue or something we use all the time called "Weldbond" glue.
40 grams of baby oil = 1/4 cup.
I had the kids tear the toilet paper into tiny pieces and then we put it into a bucket of warm water and they used their hands to mix it around until it had broken down. I strained it using a strainer lined with cheesecloth. I got the cheesecloth at the local hardware store.
I hope that this is helpful and that you get as much enjoyment from this as we did.
      Good Luck to all;
      Vicki

Joint compound is a dry or premixed material that is used primary for the installing or repairing of sheetrock or some call it dry wall. It's installed in almost every home and you can find the dry form as is used in this recipe at any home improvement or hardware store probably anywhere in the world where sheetrock is used for interior walls on commercial and residential builds. Here is one type of it.

Guys.. Joint compound is cslled differently in countries. Im in Pakistan and its usually called white cement! Its used to fill the joints in tiles and cracks of doors or whatever. Its not hard as black cement but it works in joining without lookin ugly and stops water... In india it is wall putty i guess... Uk calls it wall joint... Americans call it joint compound.. Some call putty too. Hope it helps.

I translated the recipe and the step by step for Portuguese, if you want to use it in your description, feel free to :3
It's an amazing tutorial and a marvelous recipe! I'll surely be using it a lot!
    Here's the translation:
    Portuguese/Português:
    Ingredientes:
    • 150g cola escolar (cola branca)
