The BEST Playable DK? - Mario + Rabbids: Donkey Kong Adventure -- Peak Design
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 июн 2024
- For all of the amazing games and appearances Donkey Kong has had, he hasn't had many opportunities to really shine as a playable character. Some spin-offs play into his importance, but ultimately the first member of the DK Crew is its most basic, showing the game in its simplest, least interesting form for other characters to branch off from. However, the Rabbids game of all things not only gives DK a great playable appearance, it might just be his best appearance period, playing off all of his strengths in gameplay AND personality for a legendary performance.

I think the Rabbids were a shockingly great idea for a mario group because the funny exaggerations of the characters also sortof help characterize the main people they are parodying. Marios muted "Sane and ready to fight" personallity shines when hes basically the entire teams dad.
I kinda preferred them in this than the sequel (because them talking is kind of unsettling) but it definitely is great to have them show their unique dichotomy.
@@colossaldonut5190 I for one prefer the voiced style especially for Rabbid Mario that sounds like the Super Show interpretation of Mario.
I feel like, from the very beginning, the Rabbids have been their strongest as parody and satire, taking elements from something else and exaggerating them so that they and the audience can admire the fun of the source material and laugh at its shortcomings. In their first appearance, they parodied a bit of Rayman. In their second appearance, they parodied a ton about the real world. They even parodied TV at some point. Their identity has turned into a blank canvas with potential to celebrate and mock other things that when they try to grow independent storyline from the ground-up, they come as less interesting, which I find may be a reason why people were annoyed by the Rabbids at that point. But now, by taking the opportunity to parody one of gaming's largest icons, they are not only raised from bland recognition, but they also expand the enjoyment of Mario by showing the franchise's accomplishments and flaws in the most hysterical way possible.
I remember hearing about a Mario and Rabbids crossover game, ready for an absolute shitshow of a game. When the game actually dropped tho, it easily became one of my favorites. The Rabbids are far less annoying than how they’re commonly portrayed, even getting some good chuckles from me on several occasions, and the Mario cast’s interactions with the psychotic bunnies are priceless. The one scene after Rabbid Kong with Rabbid Peach, Rabbid Luigi, and Luigi in the background always gets a good laugh from me.
dk junior
The Mario Rabbids series is something that is completely insanity on paper but just works because of how much love and care the designers of the games put into it. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, could have ever seen a game where Nintendo and Ubisoft collaborate on a turn-based XCOM-style game where Mario has a fucking GUN and SHOOTS PEOPLE and it crosses Mario with the Rabbids of all videogame mascots even being a thought in someone's head, let alone a videogame that was personally greenlit by Mario and most importantly of all being actually GOOD. To top off this mismash of crossoves with a cherry, it's music is scored by the renowned and legendary Grant Kirkhope.
This game has no right to even exist, let alone be as good as it is and the fact papa Miyamoto himself greenlit its existence and loved it is something that blows me away and it's lovely to see this game get more recognition that it totally deserves.
I say this sincerely when I say that this modern game is proof that anything can work if you believe and care for it enough. The fact its game crafted lovable characters and a charming world is just beyond words for how incredible this game is, and that doesn't even scratch the surface of the gameplay itself! This is by far the most ambitious Mario crossover to date (sorry Mario Olympics) and I just love it.
It reminds me of something said by the therapist from Cinema Therapy: "The best ideas sound incredibly silly on paper. Its not the idea, it is about how it is executed."
I agree, at times some games nowadays feel devoid of heart, with money and speed being the only things that matter, which is disheartening to say the least as it feels like many big name titles sell off of just their names alone, no offense.
So with Mario X Rabbids and the Mario Spin offs being covered, there’s only one major part of the DK franchise that you haven’t covered in this marathon of videos, you can’t avoid it forever Designing for..
“BANANA SLAMMA!”
You say "avoiding", I say "saving".
@@DesigningFor 🤨
Also skylanders.
@@DesigningForlso do you have any plans for a Mario VS Donkey Kong series video
@@kirbylover2.038 I don't have the familiarity or confidence in those games to highlight their best aspects, I'm sorry. They're really solid and I did enjoy them, but they're just not games I think I could currently do justice.
Another thing to note, Rabbid peach's sentry her secondary can be thrown by the big ape, allowing a massive boost to her normally mediocre dps with a blaster and destroyable big boom into a nuclear football for the leader of the bunch to use!
It is tragic that DK isn't playable in the multiplayer mode. It makes sense because DK needs maps designed for him to work but still.
It was this video that I realized I don't edit nearly enough Lord of the Rings references into the things I edit. This critical error will be fixed in whatever I make in my life moving forward.
Y’know one of these days, I’d enjoy another Mario + Rabbids video
Rabbid Luigi; designing for chaotic anarchy
@@pufferfishman4203 ah yes, a RUclipsr famous for chaotic anarchy.
I absolutely adore these games, would love to see another one. Don't know what it could be on though...
Donkey Kong Adventure was the reason I picked up Mario+Rabbids Kingdom Battle. It's the closest thing to a standalone DK game built from the ground up for the Switch.
And this really does feel like the most fully featured Donkey Kong we've ever gotten.
And it still is.
i randomly found this video when i was scrolling through dk adventure content since i beat it recently and it perfectly describes why i love this dlc so much, the fact that dk is a lifeline for his team and can basically do whatever he wants is great.
plus i think the fact the dlc was developed by some of DK’s old family who developed his character back in the rare days and dk’s community is very passionate about him as a character.
Could not agree more. As someone who loves the Mario + Rabbids series, this dlc is probably the best thing that ever happened. DK is just so fun to use that I can't put into words how fun it is. Glad to see this game getting some well earned attention
That intro cutscene of the dk adventure when he crashes onto the scene looming his large shadow over the ziggies and The drums hammering in the back,is one of if not the best intro for simply Dk himself I've ever seen and experienced
Same!
Mario Movie: Allow us to introduce ourselves
About time people started talking about this now-a-franchise more. Loved this DLC, hoping the Rayman DLC lives up to the hype too in Sparks of Hope!
Has Rayman been confirmed
Can I just say that Donkey Kong's retractable teeth is one of the most unsettling character design traits in any game ever? The more you think about it and notice it, the more absolutely horrific it becomes.
I wouldn`t say that his "teeth are rectractable", it seems to me more that his lips are big enough to cover them, whenever he is not grinning or clenching them.
No it’s awesome actually
I thought they were just dentures.
Remember Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon?
Playing this dlc right here is what finally convinced me to finally play the Donkey Kong country series.
I loved everything about the DLC back then, and playing the country series and returning to it made me love it even more
One of the more underrated switch games. Mario + Rabbids go so perfectly together with the mario cast and brings out the best of both so perfectly. Yes, even with DK as you brought up
I like your dissecting of the levels in each dk country game, I also like when you went over Diddy kong and how he's heroism was overlooked.
For your notice, it turned out great, with Rayman being tormented and Phantom having a round 2 roast
You know, as someone who's going into a career of game art and game design, I always wonder what made characters and franchises so great from the rest. And you thanks to you and your lovely editor; you not only showed me the banana-slamma beauty that is Donkey Kong's character, but also got me back into playing Mario + Rabbit again (don't ask why I didn't finish that wonderful game I wouldn't even know myself). Have a very merry Christmas, to you Pyre Kong, The Duke of Dorks, and every human, kong and even rabbid around the world!
The Mario+rabbids series is not only absolutely incredible, but the DK dlc is one of the best part of it! With all of the nostalgic remixes and strong moves, this DLC was worth every penny!!
Wow. Mad respect for DK.
Oh, now ya have me whistling the DK Island theme with that outro.
Guess it's time to go replay these games.
God i hope they bring him back in the new game, he's genuinely the best character I've ever played in pretty much any game.
1:08, There is a technique to ground-slam while sliding that is really fun to play with.
I like the little Lythero reference with Z Broly being in a "Not Cool, Squidward" tier.
I never thought DK could ever work in a slow-paced game, but Mario + Rabbids absolutely changed my perspective on that.
Not only do I love this channel, but it's really reminded me of just why I love Donkey Kong so much.
Everyone always talks about DK punching the moon out of the sky as if that’s his craziest feat when, in Tropical Freeze, DK can pull a boat up out of the water while standing on the boat. Now I may not be a physics geek, but everything seems to tell me that’s just fucking impossible but it shows just how stupidly strong this massive ape is.
On the topic of awesome iterations of DK, I just wanted to shout out donkey Kong's appearance in Skylanders superchargers for all of my fellow donkey kongoisseurs.
He's amazing in that game. Super fun to play, With tons of personality and lots of nods and references.
Would highly recommend for any donkey Kong fan
(Not to mention Bowser incorporated with equal love and care, and the game itself being great)
Some neat little touches i just adore is that DK throws explosive objects and his teammates with just a mighty hurl, taking care not to harm his payload to prevent self harm from face tanking an explosion or a salty pals friendly fire. Meanwhile enemies he snatches are launched with a punch for some extra pain and oomph. Also because he isn't from the original kingdom battle or senile, he can climb up ledges the other would need a pipe or team jump for, along with the ability to carry a person up with him.
Remember that Mario in its entirety is a donkey Kong spinoff
Of course Kanji's on the top of the cool-ass grappler tier list, he's also a projectile-wielding puppet character with a dash attack! Who cares if he's mid in his home game, any other grappler would be jealous.
Favorite video essay of all Donkey Kong December!!
Y'all can't tell me DK didn't have the hardest intro in Mario + Rabbids 🔥🔥🔥
I thought he was gonna talk about rabbid Kong and talk about how good of a antagonist he is to donkey Kong
This appears to be the direction The Super Mario Bros. Movie is going with the character. The heavy who's sober when he needs to be, but with a prominent playful side.
My favorite DK December yet!
You sold me on checking this game out
Honestly the M+R games are some of the best switch titles to date, if only people weren't so terrified of the notion of a game where the rabbids aren't annoying...
I stopped playing Mario + Rabbids around world 4, but I might go back to it just for DK :) This looks like sooo much fun!
Why did you stop on the final world?
@@charismaentertainer1657 I don't know... I guess I wasn't feeling a strong urge to play the game? The battles were fun but I didn't find the world or characters that interesting to explore more. (Probably why I ended up playing Fire Emblem instead)
Not a jab at the game, just I'm drawn to the characters and world before the gameplay most of the time.
DLC looks awesome. Just picked it up. Great video. Can these new characters be used in the challenge missions? I downloaded those as well. Part of the season pass bundle.
I've got the gold version of the game for 29.99 instead to the 30 the standard version was when I bought my switch and boy did I love it until it got too hard for me at the ghost worlds mid-boss.
i am the kind of curmudgeon who really doesn't like the rabbids for,.. many reasons, but, good thing the dev team here gave so much love to the prime primate
I have a quick question.
Is a video based on mario rabbids coming soon..?
And one based on the game's differences.. but also design too
dang now I need to pick this game up
Kind of strange I have beat the DKA game today and later when I see this video from yesterday and now Today.
Good stuff.
Rabbit Mario: finally a worthy opponent
Donkey Kong is my favorite Donkey Kong character
Just so you know, the Ray man dlc is just fantastic,Ray man feels great to play and doesn't feel like just a new character, and also all the bosses are awesome because they aren't just another boss but are more complex stages with some more stronger enemies, really play it.
I wish Diddy was in Mario rabbids kingdom battle with donkey kong
Ubisoft did a great job
Great video
Honestly it's amazing how they let you play in your own words a boss character.
I was actually painfully disappointed the DLC can't be used in 2 player mode.
People see that Rayman DLC in Spark of Hope and pray they get a new Rayman game out of it
We got that DK DLC in Kingdom Battle and we’re still waiting on a new DKC game
Did you talk about King of Swing yet?
Ok so is nobody gonna talk about how on the tier list for grapplers, kanji tatsumi from P4A, is apparently the absolute best one? I’m not complaining, I just want to hear more about my main man kanji
I got a sub-16 in Mario 64 while watching this video!
What do you think of the dk focus in the Mario movie?
Complete agreement on every single aspect of this video! One thing I will add though, is that I keep seeing M+R Kingdom Battle being given ridiculously good deals on the eShop... so "money" shouldn't be an excuse not to get this game AND DLC either!
You know, assuming you own a three hundred dollar piece of hardware to begin with.
I know this isn't related but I just had to experience an unskipable 2 minute add about antisemitism or whatever, what has RUclips come to 💀 also DK DONKEY KONG DK DONKEY KONG IS HERE HUH
Thank Kayne West for the reason we need these types of ads
We live in a world where people still agree with kanye, i don’t think yt is the problem here lol
@@EEE-ro5px agreed
Could you do a video on DK’s Skylanders appearance (use the Skylanders Wiki for help)
I hope DK returns as SoH DLC
Is the grappler tier list unique for this video?
Gold edition is always on sale for like fourteen bucks USD you guys should really pick it up sometime
Does anyone know what song is playing at 3:10?
If I saw this sooner I would've bought Rabbids1
In the DLC of kingdom battle, does Donkey Kong basically have the same role as Rabbid Mario in the main game, where you pull enemies towards yourself for massive AOE damage?
They are similar, but still distinct. Rabbid Mario is definitely more close-range focused than most other characters. He shares his primary weapon with Peach and Rabbid Cranky, a weapon that doesn’t have a lot of range, but deals AOE damage. His secondary weapon is a hammer that can only target enemies directly next to him, but has a large splash damage radius. His shield is focused on stopping movement damage, which he’ll inevitably have to deal with in close range, and of couse, he has the same magnet pull super as Donkey Kong. However, DK is more of an all-rounder. His primary deals damage to multiple enemies in a row, he has a hero sight super, and he’s got unique movement options with swinging and carrying, giving him some good range options that Rabbid Mario lacks. They are similar, yet distinct enough to feel different. Maybe it would feel different if you could have both in your party at the same time, but since they are exclusive to different campaigns, they work well
Donkey Kong doesn't understand the Team Jump so he made his own, better one.
Why do it when I’ve already done it like 3 or five times over 😉
Also my fav moment 8:16 I laugh every time for some reason
Cool
Shame Sparks of Hope didn't sell as well as Kingdom Battle.
I may be alone, but this reminds me about how Mario and Luigi (The side series) portrayed Bowser. It's very similar to the things mentioned in this game. things like the Boss and being comedic but not to be taken lightly. Both portrayals were loyal to the character for the most part (DK would never throw a banana and Bowser tends to fight solo). DK is probably better as a love letter to his series than bowser but no one on earth could argue that Bowser didn't steal the show in BIS and even add to his character. hopefully something like that happens with DK in this game.
It's a shame the BIS remake was a godawful idea to begin with and sunk the company, because the storyline of the unique mode is probably the best bit of character work Bowser Jr. is ever going to get.
rabbid kong
10:08 you accidentally put up a graphic of Rabbid Peach there instead of Rabbid Mario, just a heads up.
This was written pre-Sparks of Hope. I need time to reevaluate.
@@DesigningFor I personally prefer him in Kingdom Battle as well, but they’re all pretty great. Rabbid Yoshi maybe a little less so.
K rool month?
Donkey Kong Adventure: I can fix him.
Mario Movie: I can make him worse.
Heard turn based rpg and left 😂
Me Wario BEST!
How have you not done a video on tropical freeze yet?
Honestly, I think Tropical Freeze is the hardest DK game to talk about. Everyone's gone over how excellent the progression is from a storytelling perspective, and all of its levels just... do that! From entire worlds like Juicy Jungle to thrilling single stages like Sawmill Thrill, Tropical Freeze is basically shoving all of the amazing things it does right in your face that I feel like I'd just be restating the obvious! We did do a video on Lord Fredrik this month, trying to analyze him from all sides, but I do feel bad that most of my opinions on Tropical Freeze are nitpicking or criticisms, really. It's an incredible game, I just don't think I have that much to add in any sort of unique spin besides "I think the hard mode is really good, Diddy feels great in it" and "yeah so everyone who's saying the game is great? They're right, it's great!"
Just rename the channel to "Designing For Donkey Kong"
Yeah I'll never care about this series of games. But good to know Dank the Kang is treated well in his appearance here
🥸
All of this sounds great for DK. Too bad I hate the rabbids. I walked away from Rayman once they were introduced and won't touch anything with them in it.
Whenever people ask me about the Mario + Rabbids games. I legit spend more time talking about the Donkey kong expansion. It's so damn good!
lol
I would play a DK dating sim
🤍
It’s nice to be surprised by a game’s quality that you thought looks mediocre at best, it’s a feeling thats unfortunately rare nowadays because of how the game industry operates.
so is this channel just a donkey kong channel or..?
We're doing a DK video every day this month. After that... no, no I need a little break from the big ape, there's other stuff in here, too.
fuck yhhhhhh!!!!!!
i think i prefere the dk adventur main campain and exploration over mrkb's campain but i like the main game more as a combenation of its parts

Wow what an insightful comment. This should be pinned.
Edit: Ok I realize I was being a snarky bastard, sorry about that.
@@Argo_Spiral I know. I’ll just be straight to the point. No one cares.
Sigh... Found the kid...
First comments are harmless and hilariously benefit creators by boosting engagement. As is responding to them for that matter, but maybe don't be rude about it? Say it is a kid, mocking a child for excitement is a bit sad, no? And if it isn't, why take away a novel joy from someone, even it is a bit meaningless? Doesn't paint oneself in the best of lights to do that.
Have some class people, c'mon
“Beep-o. Beep’os great!”
Then he got that bad British voice instead of beeps and boops
I have to admit playing as DK is my least favorite character to play as in DKC. I wish he wasn’t forced in DKCR and DKC:TF
