Considering buying these for my two golden doodles. We live in an HOA neighborhood and our neighbors as well as our backyard are not fenced. I need them to stay in our yard which they are pretty good with for the most part, but they occasionally wonder off to the neighbors yards and they don’t enjoy that too much. With that being said, which collar would be best for us between this and the Halo? I’m not dealing with 2 super disobedient dogs, but they definitely have their moments. Just want to get the collar that will give them the best feedback to not cross the fence lines. Thanks in advance
I’ve just read a ton of people saying that the Halo is super inconsistent and has tons of issues so I’m very skeptical. I’d hate to spend this much $$ and have those issues.
It’s hard to make a judgement call on what people say about Halo because they often don’t mention WHICH Halo they’re referring too. I noticed that the Halo 2+ was inconsistent for me while the Halo 3 worked just fine, even under tree cover. I would almost always choose the SpotOn because I believe it’s more precise. Plus it has Off-Grid mode and forest mode for that tree cover. The only problem with the SpotOn is you have to have a minimum of 1/2 acre squared. The Halo is more forgiving with a 25ft by 25ft minimum. The SpotOn works a little better with all of my tree coverage but the accuracy of both collars is very good-more than enough to justify using both.
Thanks for your videos on both collars. They’re a big help. Your reviews were some of the only ones I’ve seen that covered using both collars in wooded areas. Most of my boundary would have to be in the trees or just along the edge and my house is surrounded by trees on 2 sides with trees being very close along one side. It was good to see that the SpotOn home zone worked for you even with tree cover. The SpotOn website doesn’t address using a home zone with forest mode on and also says that a home zone should only be used if you don’t have trees close to your house. So I am glad to hear first hand experience that it has worked for you. Thanks again. Still can’t decide which one to go with but your reviews answered some of my questions. I was on hold waiting for SpotOn customer service for over an hour today before giving up - but it is Black Friday 😊
@@snowpony001 You’re correct about not using Home Zone with trees close to your house. It’s difficult to see in the satellite GPS screenshots, but there is actually a fairly wide, open area in the tree canopy in front of my back sliding glass. That probably helps a lot. In fact, because of that, I don’t know if yours will work as effectively. What I do know is that Forest Zone is very accurate and I’ve only dealt with a little shift on the Home Zone front, not enough to be problematic when the dogs come inside. I usually take the collars off inside anyway because they like to rough house with each other quite a bit lol.
What do people to when they have to charge the battery? Is the dog locked up? We have a large amount of acreage and the livestock guardians are outside. Do i have to buy two batteries so i always have one charged? is that even an option?
Unfortunately, you would have to have two collars, one to wear and one to charge and remain on standby. I assume, as livestock guardians, this means your dogs are fairly active. An active dog that remains outdoors will get about 12 hours from a fully charged, brand new SpotOn collar. This is because the excess movement makes the collar communicate constantly, draining the battery faster. I don't know anything about using guardian dogs for livestock, so I apologize if my assumption, in terms of their activity levels, is incorrect. The battery is not removable and, since it is magnetic and designed to sit inside a case, the collar has to come off for charging. If you are outside, working with your dogs a lot, then a fast-charging portable charger or a mobile power station will get the collar fully charged rapidly and on the fly. I spend a great deal of time outdoors and use a Poseidon Pro, since it has an IP68 weather rating and can take a beating. If you're interested in the SpotOn collar, the best advice I can offer for your specific situation would be to remove the collar in the evenings, rapid charge it (30 mins to an hour), and it will last about 12 hours for a very active dog. That'll carry you through the night and you can rapid charge it on the fly the next morning. If your dog spends a lot of time not moving around much, the collar will last a lot longer, up to 22 hours. I hope this helps but, without understanding the full dynamic of your situation, I can only tell you what I think might work and what won't.
I wish this was the solution but maybe until technology gets better for the price waiting is better. That’s over 4K in collars for us just if it was one per dog.
