I was with my wife in New Zealand in 2009 for a conference she was attending in Taupo. As a part of the conference we attend a private party with mostly native Kiwis. I remember that the party was attended by middle age couples and the event was quite sedate until Wayne Mason himself (who we had never heard of) started singing this song. The crowd immediately rose as one and started dancing. It was an amazing change with all of the Yanks wondering what the heck was going on.
Oh my. I haven’t heard this song for years 😃. I’ve just listened to it 20 times and it’s now added to my favourites list. Reminds me of home in the 70s. Love it 🥰🥰🥰
Never gets old this song. Just sayin... I'm 43 at this moment dec.2014. remember listening to this very song all through my decades! I was born 1972! Oh yeah! And.... I'm still a BABE!
i nominate this as the anthem of the world, for mama nature and papa time :), im a yugoslav living in nz for 17 years and nature does answer me here in welly!
There are SO MANY elements to this song, that make it great. It is (to me) almost perfect. The percussion, the organ, the autoharp, the delicate guitar parts, and not at all least of all the harmonies. The ethos behind the whole feeling of the song, and the fact it's called 'Nature'- it's almost poking fun at the whole idea of hippiedom, while at the same time embracing it wholeheartedly. Love it!
Ah yes Violet French, my wife and myself happen to be at a house concert where Wayne Mason was entertaining and he sang this song and for the first time in public he didn’t accompany himself on guitar but on his piano, I’ve heard Wayne play this song many times but this was just mind blowing, one of the best ever versions I’ve heard, n wish I could have recorded it, would be worthy of being on the ‘tube.
This song is amazing!! I was listening to it stoned when i first heard it and could not belive how amazing this band was. Now that im sober it sounds even better!! thanks for sharing..keep it up brother!!
My husband Lance Johnsom grew up in Upper Hutt and was friends with the drummer Steve Parry. They were our Beatles and this song is timeless and beautiful. So proud to be a Kiwi.
Drummer Chris Parry later became NZ's most internationally successful rock manager and producer. Discovered the Jam and Siouxie and the Banshees and signed then to Polydor Records; founded Fiction Records (UK independent label) and signed the Cure to his label. He was also manager of the Cure 1978 - 2003 and produced their early albums.
We were so lucky to be teens in this era of music. We had great kiwi home grown music and amazing music from round the world. What I loved then I still enjoy now. Defines our generation and will always be tops.
The bands/singers that came out of new Zealand in the 1960's were the envy of the world, we were spoilt for choice , such great talent , We were so lucky to enjoy such an era & shows on T.V such as "Happen In" with Pete Sinclair made it so great . Peggy Wood (Aotearoa)
not long after finishing school back in the 60's i joined a local band in Gizzy managed by Terry Johnson who often got other nz bands into the city. I was fortunate enough to play along side these guys as first group, playing a few numbers before they came on stage. After, we'd get on the booze and have a great time. this tune always reminds me of them yester-years, such memorable times.
I was in a band" Free Range" and we did a cover of Nature when we played on the riverbank behind the Council rooms on a Friday evening when GDC had "Live on the Lawn" a summer promotion to entertain locals during summer afternoons. Family's laying on blankets on the grass with a cold one and the echoes of the band reverberating off the opposite riverbank. Go Gizzy Go 😊
The BESTEST song ever to come out of our Beautiful Aotearoa . Hearing this song makes me proud to be a KIWI .I remember vividly my teenage years listening to great songs such as this ..Go Kiwis . This should be Aotearoa's National Anthem.Cheers Peggy Wood
As a 5th former at Upper Hutt college in 1967 and skipping an afternoon with another schoolmate I saw the band outside the Upper Hutt post office,( early days) we thought their long hair was pretty cool, (long for the time). Our school had a collar length hair rule for boys and i was constantly on the headmasters carpet for that heonous crime! Our family moved to the USA a few months later and I heard Nature via shortwave on R' New Zealand for the first time, a couple of years later, sounded sort of Mama's and Papas, Crosby Stills Nash to me at the time, big favorites of mine then.A few years later I was bounced out of Singapore for having seriously long hair, Led Zepplin copped that deal as well!I never saw the band live, but Upper Hutt was a small place then and everybody knew someones brother/sister etc and the band proved that creativity could manifest in a conservative climate!Liked the Muttonbirds version of Nature almost as much!
Ohh same age as me.. I went to Wellington East Girl's Collage (wow ! ) I was always in detention for having my school skirt shorter than the regulation "2 inches above the knee whilst kneeling upright " allowed.. Ohh Shock, Horror, Scandal , but guess what. those such as us turned out o.k. in the end, maybe 'cos we grew up in such a great area ..Peggy Wood (Aotearoa)
My very distant cousin (not a blood relative but thanks all the same, Aunty Gwen), wrote this song. He couldn't sing to save himself so he wasn't the lead singer, but at least he was the best dressed (second from the right).
...nice pic of the band in Trafalgar Square. Saw them in Auckland when they returned from the UK, with their Marshall stacks, Hammond organ, and matching Gibsons. First song on their set, Good Times, Bad Times. I guess London in those heady times, would do that to you. Nature enter me.

One of the great songs of all time.Maybe not as good as say 'Waterloo Sunset' by the Kinks but it could be on the same album,or any Beatles album for that matter.
