Ralf Rangnick, famous for creating the style of play that defines the Red Bull franchise, and for influencing the likes of Klopp, Tuchel, and Hasenhuttl with his use of the Gengenpress has become Manchester United interim manager. But how will he transform Man United?
United look far from a high pressing team, so what does he need to do? JJ Bull explains to The Football Manager Show’s Iain Macintosh.

I’m still stunned that United actually hired him. He’s such an icon and a genius. What a brilliant appointment. Although there’s still a chance that he won’t be able to implement his vision at United. If he does though, then that’s a scary prospect
I fear that the United hierarchy will still find a way to mess it up, probably by failing to support him or implement his vision correctly. Knowing the English media, they'll blame any failure directly on Rangnick rather than examining the reason why it didn't work out.
I’d rate him over poch
@@WOOOPdoctorFROGhere another with negative thoughts..😴
really hope United make him the director of football after the interim stint
They must have promised him that they would stay out of his way. Otherwise he would have never accepted it. Rangnick rejected Chelsea after all.
It’s been confirmed that ragnick will be bringing his own coaches & a video analyst & will be allowed to assess the current coaches
That is some excellent news, and I believe it will help him get the team playing the way he wants faster
if thats true then utd are really in safe hands 100% and i dont care if ralfie dont succeed at utd its even means he can bring ten hag or poch
Sources please?
In a way tho I wouldn’t mind a few of the coaches like Carrick staying on and learning from him.
Ahmed Rizwan trust me bro
That "80 sideways passes and you died in your sleep sometimes in the second half" quote was pure gold lmao
had me dead :D
To be fair I was indeed falling asleep quite often during lvg's tenure and I guess I got used to it and jose's football was a lullaby sometimes as well. Harsh times for United's football, great times for my mental health.
So accurate too, Oleball wasn't great but I still enjoyed way more games under him than LVG.. Obviously not talking about this season because that was pants
Lazy as well.

At least LVG has a philosophy. A system in place.

@@TUTANKHAMUN077 I think it's a joke buddy.
This better be a joke because Bielsa couldn't even win Ole

When you see and hear Klopp on Sky Sports saying it's bad news for other teams that Rangnick is coming to the Prem you know that United have made the right choice.
True bro!....just watched that presser and you could see he is clearly aware of the kind of influence he ill have in the premier league....
But you cannot trust the United management. The might force him to keep Carrick and the other Ole coaches. Rangnick may want his own coaches and that's already a backward step for the new manager. Then as we have seen these United players are over payed and seem to have power over the coach. Pogba made Mourihno job almost impossible and he ended up sacked. Now with Cr7 and all these big egos Rangnick might find it hard to force these players to run and work hard. We know and have seen how lazy they are. Finally it is uncanny how 4 managers have come and all seem to have failed in the same way! Start well then slowly start to lose simple games and eventually complete failure! The only manager who deserved more time was LVG, LVG was just about to turn a corner till Jose Morihno decided to spoilt the party!!!
@@hisajabness6946 Don't worry, as a Sporting Director he will kick those lazy asses out of the club if they don't behave.
Well you can't expect him to say rangnick's a terrible manager though smh
LMAO
The only thing I'm seeing is Van De Beek shining in this type of high-press, contained, dynamic football!! :)
Should have gone to spec savers looool
As a United fan, this really suprises and excites me because it seems like the first smart, thinking man appointment that we have done in the glazers reign.
It finally seems like woodward and co. are accepting that they may need to appoint specialists and give some control to them rather than trying to dictate themselves.
really really suprised, but moreso than the interim role, im moreso suprised and excited by the consultancy, sporting director style role that is in the contract for after his interim position.
For the first time in years I have hope that this may be a step in the right direction!
I think the first sentence is a bit unfair. Moyes is a really good manager, it just didn't work out for him at United at the time.
@@drSvensen Moyes is really a defensive coach tho. One of the best builders of defensive set ups in the world. But his team's attacks basically boil down to set pieces, fast counters and crossing the ball.
@@otto_jk Yes, and I belive that's one of the reasons a top club doesn't fit him. But he is very good for a medium sized club.
Spot on. Never thought the day would come.
@@drSvensen I think it's more about the style of play. Mourinho is a world class coach but when watching man utd you want to see rock n roll football. Not just results.
I love how even Tifo know that Pogba's Toast now . . .
It’s amazing how the league has 2 of the “most influential coaches” ever in Bielsa and Rangnick
Ever? Really? Lippi, Trapatoni,Sacchi,Capello are influential....they are good coaches but nothing more.
@@jatin2616 Rangnick and Bielsa are direct influences and their game is played today by the other coaches. Sure the guys mentioned are great as well
@@jatin2616 Klopp, Nagelsmann and Tuchel all were influenced by Rangnick, so were the German national team. He put Leipzig and the RB franchise on the map.
@@jatin2616 Pep guardiola is one of the best coaches of all time, he was influenced by Bielsa. Pochetino is a world class coach, influenced by bielsa. There are numerous German coaches all influence by Rangnick.
Bielsa vs Ralf will be great to watch. Altough Ralf has better players at disposal. But both are institutions for so many top class coaches....
I can confirm that 4-3-1-2 works exceptionally well with this year's United team on FM22.
6:56 mate you literally just drew Maguire's head on the pitch.

Lol
Hahahahaahaaaa
His 8 seconds rule is amazing
This is all good… but Macguire takes 10secs to realise we have lost possession!!
😂😂😂😂
Macintosh's question is the one that's been on my mind too. I'm excited that better coaches will be coming to Carrington but how long would it take for these players to grasp the new concepts they'll be coached on
I think it'll be a mix honestly. Where some players like Sancho and Donny will understand it, whilst players like AWB and Scott might struggle to grasp it. Aside from the pressing tho, I want to see how the buildup will work from now on.
I'd say pretty quickly.
Well, look at Tuchel. He came in January and won the Champions League the same season. Ragnick will arrive about the same time he did.
People seem to forget that Rangnick played 35 years old immobile Raul all the way in UCL up to the Semi-final defeat at the hand of, ironically, Man United. So I think playing Ronaldo, who is far superior player compare to Raul at that time, is a non-issue.
Couldn't be a more disappointing news as a Liverpool fan. But makes the league even more exciting. Klopp, Pep, Tuchel, Rangnick, Conte - What else can anyone ask for?
I hope Simeone comes to the Premier League but that’s just wishful thinking. I’d love to see the antics and drama lol

People go on like Man United players ain’t professional. They’ve played how the manager told them. They can definitely adapt to a higher tempo! (Sancho at Dortmund, Varane with the high line at Real) A few might not but that’s life.
When they have structure to their press and more cohesion as a team etc, the talent will shine through. I feel players like Rashford will benefit big time!
Yeah players like rashford, van de beek, Fred, Sancho, Varane, Telles will thrive in this system but Shaw, maguire, wan bissaka will suffer
Rashford's one of the laziest in utd squad
@@vincentlive2763 and one of the most talented lol. Players are only as lazy as their managers allow them to be. Let’s see how he does under the new guy.
I’m excited, but also I’m not sure how much time he’s going to get to make the squad click with his style. They’ve got a lot of learning to do, and going into December and January where it’s the busiest time of the year for Premiership clubs (although maybe a little mitigated by already being through in Europe and being knocked out of the League Cup).
He has experience.
They have the easiest fixture list in December/January.
@@Footballcornerworld irrelevant. There are no training sessions when you play Saturday and Wednesday. Literally zero. This isn't gonna work unless we sacrifice europe next season.
@@tooshlong to you thing united is the first team where he he'd to deal with this.... 😂. Irrelevant? I would exactly the opposite. But time will show. Who cares. I like him but united lost a bit of my sympathy, I miss the joy and dominance but they drift to fast into arrogance. It's still not a team. A real team with a special spirit I miss.but the holiday times are over, rangnick is a beast, if you are not willing to run, you are out.
@@Footballcornerworld it would help if you wrote in proper English. Also, if you think that having no training sessions to implement your system is irrelevant, then stop watching footy, mate. It isn't a game for you.
Basically United are going to play exactly what Liverpool have been playing under Klopp, high pressing heavy metal football. But it'll be most probably like how Liverpool played under Klopp in the first few seasons. Lots of goals for & against them. With the high pressing especially with Varane injured they'll have Maguire, Lindeloff, Shaw & Wan Bissaka as the back four or if it's three back it'll be Maguire, Lindeloff & Wanbissaka at the back. That's really risky high back line United are going to expose against the likes of Liverpool, City & Chelsea. So we could see lots of activities in the Jan transfer again. Solidity, confidense & risk taking in the defense is a must for gegen pressing, because the players defends in pack. Virtually all the players are involved in the gegen pressing style of football. As a Liverpool fan excited to see another team going to play heavy metal football.
Maguire won’t start, he’s not quick enough and he’s already stated he don’t rate Shaw.
@@thebizness5596 Yeah, I was just going to point out the lack of speed on Maguire making a high defensive line even more risky.
I think Bailey and Tuanzebe are quick
@@DrYahyaMuhamed quick but one is injury prone, while the other is error-prone (he's really good when he's on his good days)
@@summonerbraddysg51 what?
You think Maguire and Shaw is any better than Eric and tuanzebe!
Get a grip
Maguire is awful
Shaw is not good enough !
These intros are getting better and better
Contrary to popular belief I think Ronaldo will excel in a pressing system if there’s a plan in place and they press in packs, if you want him to run around like a headless chicken that ain’t gona happen why buy a Ferrari and use it to harvest the crops, I’m excited to see how many goals he will get in a system like this will be great to watch no need to worry honestly.
Yeah, Ronaldo can play in any football system. He just going to prove it again.
Absolutely right. Ronaldo is a beast. 🥰. Nobody is better than Ronaldo physicaly. One can bet his life on Ronaldo 😊.
Hes the hardest working foothaller, so i dont get why ppl doubt him either
Funny thing is that the popular belief that he can run like werner or cavani
Sorry to say He can't do it.
Spot on
It would be real cool if you could do the guy that influenced Rangnick, Valeriy Lobanovskyi. The brilliant Ukrainian/Soviet football mind
The issue with pressing is that it takes a lot of the players and Rangnick is coming right in the middle of the busiest period in the Premier League. He must be careful how hard he runs the players, or he could have an injury crisis similar to Liverpool under Klopp.
I've cried because I'm a Conte fanboy. Now that I see what this sir Rangnick does, I can't wait to see them play
Rangnick now with Poch/ten Hag coming in the summer might actually be ten times better than Conte. I was livid after we lost Conte to Spurs, but fair play to Woodward and the board, they seem to have stumbled backwards into a much better long term solution than what Conte would've been.
Bielsa vs Ralf will be great to watch. Altough Ralf has better players at disposal. But both are institutions for so many top class coaches....
People need to seriously inform themselves on Rangnick.
He is considered a football professor with a difficult ego. Just a quick look into his CV will give you some hints.
His success is often linked to having full control of rather smaller clubs, working with young players and putting a philosophy into the whole club.
The lack of experience with big clubs with big egos in both management and the squad is something that people should consider when forecasting his impact on United.
I think Pogba's gone in January. Dealing with him is likely even more difficult than with Ronaldo
There's also the question of player profiles. A good number of them will struggle under Rangnick. Maguire is always slow off the mark and gets turned easily, while his comments on Shaw has resurfaced. That's already half the defence and we don't know how AWB will cope either.
@@sususegar Funnily enough I would actually bet on Ronaldo turning into a quick ally of Rangnick as he might like his pure football knowledge. Ronaldo knows a professional when he sees one. That in turn should motivate the team mates to give their all again.
@@riquelmeone I'm less concerned about Ronaldo adapting. My question mark on him is whether he's able to keep up for sustained number of game. It's players like Martial and Pogba who might suffer given how languid they usually are. If the midfield and forwards are solid enough, maybe it can help with the defence's weaknesses.
There's also the question of whether the board can screw up and not keep up with Rangnick's expectations.
Hey guys can you make a video on the issues with Atletico madrid this season, it's really depressing to watch😭
I really liked the bit about the small sided training game! Can we maybe have a video on different training sessions for different styles of play? I feel like most people really only know about the rondo. Would be a really cool video! Especially since JJ's coaching badges make him perfect person to explain this kind of thing
Should we be concerned that he has a super villain name?

@@fisheatsyourhead ahaha
I was watching this video with a smile on my face. The first real smile since Sir Alex's era.
So excited to see this in action! Finally we are trying to regain our attacking identity.
JJ finally has someone to respond to his Football Manager references 🤣🤣
Man I love JJ his quirky energy makes everything better.
OMG That Champ Man 01/02 tactic brought some flashbacks of playing till 4am and then waking up at 7 to go to work bleary eyed but still thinking of Kennedy Bakirkiolgu's last minute Champions League winner.... lol
Where did this competence in the United board come from? I'm genuinely so shocked
I found really enjoyable that they used Iain in the video to bounce ideas and questions off JJ. Definitely added a bit more depth to situation rather than only the tactical analysis (even though that's always been amazing). Tifo videos have honestly gotten better consistently with huge jumps in quality the past month.
I've really enjoyed this discussion, far better than what the other channels have to offer.
Waiting for the Tifo guys to make a video on how Messi is pulling PSG down like they did for Ronaldo 😭
They'll never do that. They'll rather say, Poch is a bad manager.

They'll never make a video criticizing Messi. They'll make a video saying how Messi is not being used well in PSG.
@Sylvester Banini how is making that video disturbing behavior
@@mbappethegoat1559 they made a whole video on Messi's first goal. Which wasn't even the best goal of that week😭

JJ Bull seems like the most chill dude to hang out with
I feel he'll do ok as interem but amazing as a long term part of the board making trickle down decisions on staff and signings etc
first few matches under counter pressing managers like klopp, ragnick are so exciting, i remember when klopp was hired, i was so excited, and when we defeated city 4-1 at etihad in 2015/16, that was epitome of gegenpressing for me. Tho i hate united, but the remainder of the season is going to be quite exciting for them
He looks like Harry maguire telling the tactics
I listen to Joe's rap fully in every video, it's so good
I’d love to hear JJ’s thoughts on how Maguire and Varane work with Rangnick’s defensive rest concept
Ragnick plays a high line. Maguire will be dropped for Lindelof or Baily
Interesting appointment as an interim manager. But obviously seems to be a good one
Lingard would thrive in a system like this. He works really hard off the ball and is so direct
I'm surprised that we are making a smart decision under our current structure. We need more experience over seeing things and a club builder like Ralf seems ideal. Because we are a long way behind our rivals at the moment.
The advantage of drafting in MacIntosh is that you get language like inculcate in your video.
Like some sort of "Proper" journalist who's wrote (sic) for a newspaper and everything.
@4:25 there’s a mistake.
The moment the CB pass it to the FB, that’s where Timo initiate the press. He will cut the passing lane from the CB and press him hard. He’s the first aggressive one to chase him, then comes the rest of the players cutting off passing lanes and aggressively surround him until he gets the ball.
So, isolate the FB.
So, @4:25 Fred should not be close to the FB, it should be Rashford.
Content keeps getting better!👏

Joe is a straight up hitmaker. His debut single "welcome to the mega deallll" was followed up by the monster autumn joint "tifo merch" and now he closes the year with "deal of the year".
Best appointment. I wanted Rangnick at Milan but Milan management stuck by Pioli which was the right decision because of the improvements Pioli made to the team. Rangnick is an intelligent appointment by Man United board and he will fix the issues in the recruitment and training. The club will only improve from here.
I had been moaning about (the state of) United for months, and he was the one I seriously thought would be a very good option. His perspective is very much like a young(er) van Gaal. He sees that a club should have a seemless system - boys through to seniors. He is very much a driven man. A complex consumate coach and not a fool. He WILL get the job done! He doesn't take prisoners. He sshould have been approached after SAF left and that's where we lost our way!!
He IS everything we've been missing since SAF went out of the door.
Hello mister JJ bull, in his consultancy role do you think Rangnick would really enjoy an Yves bissouma, seems a bit similar to Haidara (i have seen few Haidara games). But think bissouma would work well with a fred or donny, used to lying in a two with a lallana or gross, albeit in front of a 3 on most occasions, but think a lindelof-maguire partenship would be similar to that of Dunk-Webster. Would be interested to see how this may work. Maybe a Rangnick ideal window video.
This is like The Waterboy,...
"If the quarter-back throws the ball to the receiver, I try and tackle that guy,.. if he throws it to someone elese I try and tackle that guy as well"
I was initially worried about players buying in to his style, but given he will be in a position of power after his interim manager role, he will probably tell them it’s his way or they’re out. He doesn’t suffer fools, and if you bring Rangnick in you want the entire cultural shift he brings. I think he will be given a lot of power.
Surreal to see Tifo explaining Liverpool press with ManU players
I love ragnick, nd am excited to see what he will do with the amazing united squad
but I fear it might be the end of Ronaldo at man united
It’s going to be a nightmare trying to get the style out, the season is crazy ridden with games already
What a man Iain Macintosh is
As soon as JJ showed the arrows I remembered that tactic in 01/02. So broken.
And this video needs to be shown to people who are talking about pressing with no idea how it actually works
how fast are you guys! fair play!
In this type of video, Ian Macintosh is perfect for The Bullet.
Joe would be too distracting. (Love him to bits in pod cast and Tifo vids)

Vdb will play for sure in this system and either Fred/Mctominay will.
I still remember a couple seasons ago when he was linked with Milan heavily..
Is it bad that i still Woodward/Glazers to mess this up somehow?
I have been trained to expect them to do so.
