  • Twenty years after we last saw the Cleaver family in Leave it to Beaver, we revisit them in this CBS TV movie created by Brian Levant and broadcast in March 1983. Beaver (Jerry Mathers) is grown and has two boys of his own but his wife is divorcing him, so he moves back in with his mother June (Barbara Billingsley) at 211 Pine Street in Mayfield (Ward has died). Wally (Tony Dow) is a lawyer married to his school sweetheart Mary Ellen Rogers and they are trying to have children. Eddie Haskell (Ken Osmond) is back and the same as ever running a shyster construction company, and he has a son (Eddie Jr) who is a chip off the old block (his real-life son). Friends Lumpy (Frank Bank) and his father Mr. Rutherford (Richard Deacon), Larry (Rusty Stevens), Richard (Richard Correll), and Tooey (Lucas "Luke" Fafara II, aka Tiger) are still around, as is Miss Canfield (Diane Brewster), now principle of the school of the Cleaver grandchildren.
This movie led to one season of The Disney Channel's first original scripted series also called Still the Beaver in 1984-85, and three more seasons on Ted Turner's WTBS Superstation under the name The New Leave it to Beaver from 1986-89.
The presentation here is commercial-free due to the ads being edited out from my original Betamax recording of 35 years ago.
Copyright restrictions on RUclips also required shortening nine of the many clips in this movie from the original Leave it to Beaver down to less than 30-seconds each, thus shortening the overall length of the movie by about six-and-a-half minutes.
Of course this Still the Beaver movie doesn't offer all the 1950s-era innocent charm of the original but it is filled with touching and fun remembrances, including numerous clips of the classic black-and-white series, especially with father Ward Cleaver (Hugh Beaumont died shortly before this movie was made). And there are numerous nostalgic references to the first series.
Newcomer Janice Kent plays Mary Ellen, while Corey Feldman and John Snee play Beaver's sons Corey and Oliver, respectively. Eric Osmond is perfect as Eddie Haskell Jr. - he and his father are two highlights of this movie. Ed Begley Jr. re-creates Whitey, and Joanna Gleason plays Beaver's wife Kimberly. (When the series started, there were a several cast changes of the Cleaver grandkids, and Richard Deacon died and had to be replaced as Mr. Rutherford).

I remember when this movie came out in 1983. I was a teenager who loved The Leave It To Beaver TV show. I remember when the Graveyard scene was shown. And the two sons were walking away from their father's grave with their mom arm in arm. Tears flowed out of my eyes like crazy. The same thing happened again when I saw that scene in the movie after Barbara BILLINGSLEY died. And now again when that scene came up. Tears flowed for Tony Dow. R. I. P. HUGH BEAUMONT, BARBARA BILLINGSLEY, AND TONY DOW! WISHING JERRY MATHERS GOOD HEALTH AND PEACE ❤🌹🕊

the 1982 SCTV Version of "Leave it to Beaver" was better. Beaver accidentally shoots one of his friends in the head. Then his dad says... "Beaver, Maybe 25 years in a maximum security penitentiary will teach you not to play with guns". :)

Rest in Peace 🙏 Tony Dow. Wally was everyone's favorite brother. Tony Dow brought that character to life. His charisma, his personality, his kind heart made Wally a great household name. He always had his brother's back. He ALWAYS loved and cherished his family. This is a great man! God Bless the family of Mr.Dow. Be with them, comfort them, give them peace please. Cancer is brutal, harsh and painful. Rest now Tony Dow, and know your body may not be here but your memory will live on forever and ever. RIP 🕊🕊🙏🕊🙏🕊🕊

Within a week we started getting calls asking for a Mr. Haskell, obviously bill collectors. After a while, I decided to have some fun with it and my response was "No, he moved back to Mayfield with his brother Eddie." The first few people were either too young or from overseas and did not get the reference, some even asked for an address. The last one was an older woman, first she dropped the phone, when she picked it up she was laughing and thanking me for making her day.

Jesus, I had to stop the film from weeping when Beaver walks back into his family home & in his head he hears his recently deceased father call out "Is that you, Beev?".
I have no idea why that hit me so hard. It's not from memories of my own father. Isn't it strange how strong of emotions one can feel from people you've never met? When Neal Peart of Rush died I cried for days, felt worse than when my own family passed. I think it has to do with how much they influenced & affected you & your own life?

I love how, for a reunion show, they deal a lot with the mature themes of aging, grief, and loss with as much gravitas as possible and yet are still leaving time for humor. Just the scene of June saying her catchphrase...she’s lost the love of her life, and she’ll never get over it.

Really nice. I also like the flashbacks. Brings back a lot of memories. It's a little sad when they show Wards grave. I had an uncle that would visit his wife's grave & talk to her. I felt bad for Wally at fist, then happy he had a child at the end. June's character remained the same . Beaver's children resembles Beaver's personality when he was young. There's still a little Beaver in him. However, his wife leaving her 2 boys doesn't seem right. Beaver life is going to change pretty fast caring for those boys. Even though June is still around, not a soul can replace those 2 boys original mother. Those kids are going to grow apart from her. Later, she's going to regret it. They may just resent her later on. She'll probably blame Beaver. He may just find someone else. Anyway, glad to see the old cast now grown up still playing their original character. Love the show, old & new. A model how family should be. How much life has changed since then.

This was how you do a reunion movie right! Bring back as many old cast members as possible, plus their offspring and then put them in new situations. While the subsequent TV show tweaked the premise slightly to make it a traditional sitcom, this was more comedy/drama. It hit the right nostalgic notes, yet didn't forget that the characters were no longer kids and had real-world problems.

Hey, very well said. I became a fan in the 80s because I was born in 74 and would watch it if I was home from school. By then I got to know the characters and seen the new leave it to Beaver in the newspaper. I found out Hugh Beaumont had died in 1982 and wouldn't be in it. I wished he was in this show to put put him in spiritually. I am a big fan of the show and love Hugh Beaumont s acting and father skills..I started looking at what Hugh Beaumont did before Leave it beaver and he had some great run of movies, such as the Lost Continent from 1951. Beaver, Jerry Mathers later on appearing on Married with children of course and I was watching. The only ones left or Richie , Larry mondel, Gilbert , Judy , Candy, Tim Matheson , Beaver himself and probably a few of the young kids such as Fred Rutherford s daughter. I also think a few of Wallys girls. I just wish they got a 7th season in. We all will remember Tony dow and how great he was in the show. Him and Beaumont weren't in the pilot episode but I'm so glad it turned out how it did. Hugh Beaumont looks alot like my late grandfather Albert.

I grew up watching this wholesome show. One thing I always thought, most Moms didn't wear pearls. I didn't grow up in a loving place, at all. Glad everyone was included, even their father, made it a total family. I wish today's families were like this one, even though it wasn't real. Maybe our world would be a better place for today's generations. I am 75 and still enjoy this show. Hope it continues for many years and more families and children watch it to see ..that understanding and caring and loving, makes for a wonderful family and future.
RIP Tony Dow and the rest of the
'Leave It To Beaver' cast and crew for all you gave us. 🤗👍🙏🙏

He was a different actor than the original "Rusty Stevens." "Rusty Stevens" was a stage name anyway. The original "Larry Mondello" is much bigger and would have made for difficult camera angles even if he had been interested. He apparently had no interest in going back after leaving the original show a couple of seasons before it ended. Also, as far as I know, he didn't continue in acting after that.

I think we all miss our childhood I know I do things were so different .

Glad you liked this reunion movie 20 years after the show you watch every day ended in 1963. This 1983 reunion movie became a revival series for four seasons of 101 episodes on Disney Channel and TBS Superstation from 1986-89 and was never seen again anywhere for more than 25 years, so I have transferred and posted every one of them right here on my RUclips channel. Enjoy!

Great, glad you are discovering it -- I have also posted the first season of the follow-up revival series called Still the Beaver, and I am right this minute editing an audio commentary I recorded at lunch last Thursday with Jerry Mathers for one of the episodes in which he is reunited with Violet Rutherford (original actress Veronica Cartwright) - he describes what it was liked doing Still the Beaver and working with all the original cast members as adults and new actors as their kids (and as June's grandkids). I'll be posting that soon.

I remember my ADHD self sitting in 7th grade English Class thinking about the scene where Beaver as dad was disciplining Corey and he picked up the broken guitar that twanged. I burst out in laughter and everyone looked at me.

thank you for posting this - i grew up with the beaver and have never seen this before. i must admit to tears when beaver first walks in the door at the house and the memories start flowing with ward sitting in the chair. knowing he passed the year before made it tough to watch. and tony passing recently made it even tougher. the memories will live on

It’s hard to realize nearly twice the time has passed from this episode to now than from the original series to this episode.

I love it when so many years have passed by or they became grown ups. They never missed a step and still acted the same especially with Ken Osmond (RIP). I'm surprised they never had more roles for him in Hollywood because in this movie. He looked so similar to Clint Eastwood.

@@cmccorquodale2003 I think this movie is great. I did notice some continuity issues. They replaced Corey Feldman (Corey Cleaver) with Kipp Marcus (Kipp Cleaver). And Wally's first-born was a boy in the movie, but on the series his first-born is a girl. In the movie, Ward passed before Wally became a father. In the series, Ward must have been alive to have seen Wally's daughter, Kelly. Still a great movie.

@@mistercool3859 Those flashbacks were the best thing cause they were legit moments we have seen and that one where Ward is on the bed talking and Beaver followed up doing the same 🤧
