Gerry Rafferty was the lead singer of this band before he went solo ("Baker Street"). The song is a satirical description of an actual signing party for a rock group in London that he and his band were invited to. The party basically consisted of music company executives (clowns and jokers) telling stories and dispensing bogus advice. Rafferty was always cynical about the business of music and shunned the trappings of celebrity and pop star status. "Baker Street" echoes these same thoughts.
As a joke, Gerry Rafferty was doing his best Bob Dylan imitation while they recorded this. It worked, so they stuck with it!
It's uncanny
If you’ve seen Resevoir Dogs, the scene with this song haunts you
From the Songfacts website:
Also known simply as "Stuck In The Middle," this Stealers Wheel classic was co-written by the group's guitarist Gerry Rafferty and keyboard player Joe Egan.
In his obituary of Rafferty for the January 5, 2011 issue of the Daily Telegraph, Martin Chilton said of this song that it was "Written as a parody of Bob Dylan's paranoia, it ridiculed a music industry cocktail party, with the lyrics:
Clowns to the left of me
jokers to the right
here I am, stuck in the middle with you
To Rafferty's utter disbelief his parody, composed as little more than a joke but with a catchy pop arrangement, struck gold, selling more than a million copies.
this is Gerry Rafferty! same as Baker Street!
Stuck In The Middle Of You is one of my favorite Steelers Wheel song.
😂😂😂
The song was recorded at the Beatles Apple Studio, and it sounds like Stealer's Wheel were going after a Beatles sound with the handclaps and singer Gerry Rafferty sounding a bit like Lennon. And that line "Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right" sounds like something straight out of the mind of John as well. Stealer's Wheel had one more hit, while not as big as this one, entitled "Star", which I hope you play one day, Biz.
You mean Abbey Studios
You enjoyed Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty a couple of days ago and he's in this band!
This was by far Stealers Wheel's biggest hit, though they did have some other strong songs ("Star", "Right or Wrong", "You Put Something Better Inside Me, "Late Again"") - superb harmonies. Lead singer Gerry Rafferty had a long solo career after this. This was written after Rafferty and co-writer Joe Egan had to endure a music company party with executives who knew nothing about music. They felt they were surrounded by idiots.
🤣😂🤣😂 OMFG.... when this song/the schlyrics hit and u shared ur experiences about being so "high" in ur younger years... I was lmoa!! This song is so much fun and TIMELESS!! We've all had periods when we get high... fun as hell. Even if someone doesn't get the lyrics (hint: we are all jokrs!😉)... the instrumentation is so fire that it leaves you with such a feelgood vibe.💯💯💯 This was so much fun! As always, you rock Biz!!😎❤❤❤
MUSIC TO CUT SOMEONE'S EAR OFF BY! ( watch the movie reservoir dogs...)
Love this song but it’s impossible not to “dance” like Michael Madson when I hear it. 😂
have had the clowns, jokers line in my head so many times over the years it's like a private little joke...
"Bakers Street ",Gerry Rafferty was in that group.
Love this song.
Singer Gerry Rafferty went on his own to have hits with Right down the line and Baker Street
There are songs that stick with you and this one did with me. I remember exactly where I was and where I was standing when I first heard this song. It was 1973 sometime in mid-March in a hoagie-pizza place with an arcade inside. I was at the pinball machine in the corner waiting for a roast-beef with lettuce, tomato and mayo with a side of fries.
This song was an unforgettable part of the movie "Reservoir Dogs".
It's the lighthearted song playing when a bloodthirsty bank robber turns a cop into a Turkey. Slices off his ear and douses him in gasoline.
Every time I hear this song, I picture that scene!
@@karenmikalofsky5287 It's a hard scene to watch. Unforgettable.
Damn I STILL love this song.
This song slaps so hard it should come with a warning. Everything about it is perfect. EVERYBODY loved this song and it was played to DEATH.
Who else remembers the scene from Reservoir Dogs with this song playing on the radio?
If you saw it once,,,,, you will never forget it.
OOne of the most intense sceenes in movie history.
Mr. Black, Mr. Pink, Mister White and Mr. Brown.
LOL 😂🤣👏🏼same when I took LSD I felt the same way.🤣🤣🤣
🎸💯 Stealers Wheel is such a cool funky vibe‼🔥
You've REALLY been outdoing yourself lately, Biz‼
🤯 "Stuck in the Middle" is just one of those tunes that you can't really let go of once it's in your brain & shit‼I've been that high before SO MANY TIMES‼lolol ☮ ❤ 🎶
Very catchy song when it was released!!! Honey everyone was high back then...and probably still are!!!🎵🎼🎶🥁🎤🎙🎧🎹🎸🤘🤘🤘
Context for this would be several Bob Dylan songs -- "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues", "Desolation Row", "Drifter's Escape", "All Along The Watchtower", ...
Do It Biz!!!
Acid man, Acid
Oh man I remember this song! You’re taking me back to AM radio lol. ❤❤❤❤ it’s a good one.
reservoir dogs torture scene can't get it out of my head 😮
This song is like Black Betty they will never die 🤘
Another fun song from middle school.
Gerry Rafferty left Stealers Wheel and then this became a hit. His old band mate had to lip sync the song in the official video.
Oh Memories Party On
Wow....what a fun reaction...well done my man
I appreciate it
Great song all day, everyday. I'm a huge Bob Dylan geek and since this songs release in 1972 or 73 or somewhere around that time, I've been saying that Gerry Rafferty's vocals sounds so Dylan.
A few agreed with me over the years but many don't and I just think to myself that apparently you haven't listened to a lot of Dylan. Even the lyric "Clown's to the left of me, joker's to the right" is just so Dylan and is a verse that he could have written.
I call this a Dylan tribute song and there's nothing wrong with that. This is such a catchy sonically cool song.
Again, please check out Dylan's "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" and "Mr. Tambourine Man" and one more "Subterranean Homesick Blues" from his 1965 Lp, "Bringing It All Back Home". One hell of a great album.
Peace ❤
As a young teen (I never took drugs) I never understood any of the lyrics, but it sure sounded good. It was a hot song in its day.
You don't need more context. You're all over it. 😂 Mama told me not to come is the song it reminds you of.
I think about this song a lot at work. clowns and jokers all over the damn place. lol
Yeah Biz Your story of being so high was funny!!!🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂
You loved Baker Street that you reviewed the other day. This is The same guy.
Songs so good it will make ya wanna cut an undercover cops ear off.
Right up there with Mama Told Me Not To Come. Yep, people didn't know what they were getting into 40 and 50 years ago...
I am part of that generation, and I could say the same about younger people. Every generation has its stupidity when we're young. It's part of how we learn to grow up.
@@angelbulldog4934 yep, we all have stupidity, no doubt. More of a naivete back in the 69's for most.
The song is about having to deal with record company executives.
CATALOGGGG, NO! LOL 😊 BUT THIS WAS ( GERRY RAFFERTY ) BEFORE HE WENT WITH HIS OWN BAND BIZ! 😊 HUGE HUGE RADIO HIT IT WAS
great song but now when I hear it al I can think about is the movie scene in Reservoir Dogs
The clowns and jokers are representative of the music executives, producers and “hangers-on”.
The first time I made brownies!! Licking the spoon and the bowl. Eating the warm brownies and then another! I called those my talk to God brownies! 😂❤
Love this song! So true, lol. Thank you, Biz.
The promo video to this song is so weird, and funny.
I got super high like that at a bar once. I found a dark corner and nursed a warm beer for about an hour.
😂😂😂😂
The entire album is great! Late Again for example...every cut is great!
I've never really understood what this song means but I like it it's a catchy tune
The song is about having to deal with record company executives.
@@freebirdtony oh ok well that makes sense
I've prayed to God during a bad trip before....after I saw horns growing out of my friends head.
Another great one, Biz. Also pleased to hear that you also are well versed in the story of this great song. Feth know's I've been that gone on more than a few occasions. But they do make some of the funnier stories.
Hope everyone has an amazing weekend & much love from here in GB
Great song .
Gerry Rafferty ❤ RIP
We all been there 😂😂
More cowbell! (But spare the straight razor!!!)
A great song, a real classic! 🎶🎶🎶
Try some " Terry Reid " without expression .... Live from the grey whistle test
Thanks for your reaction to this fun song right away as suggested. This was another one from way back in my foolish youth and partying days that reminded me of the three dog night song "Mama Told Me Not To Come". The song had a deeper meaning related to issues with the executives of the record industry but to us as kids it was a song about getting too high at a party with some strange people. I don't know if you are familiar with Billy Squire but a big hit song for him was "The Stroke", also about issues with the record industry but it was a party song that we all interpreted in a different way.
Whatever any deeper meanings, I always heard it as he was tripping. Gonna fall off the chair, not sure how get downstairs, etc. But then that part comes about having made it and now his family coming around begging him for his money. Not sure where that comes in,
"More cowbell."
❤❤❤
Grandaddy Kush 5000.... 😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂
You analyze that well again
Thank you
Reservoir Dogs
Lmao. Love your too high story lol. Yep have had one of those on shrooms. Hmm. Maybe twice lol.
😂😂😂😂
Dude debating sleeping on the floor. He was pretty high.
Exactly
BEEN THERE BRO!! So high off brownies we made put way too mush pot in them. Stupid ass 19 yr old I was at the time. It spun me. I thought I was going to DIE! I went to bed telling my buddies if I don’t make it tell them what i did! I woke up the next morning and was still HIGH!!! I never ate brownies again! Smokes tons of weed but NO MORE BROWNIES!
This song is about the music/record industry. The execs and management are the clowns and jokers. They're telling us how rotten and corrupt the music business is.
Now...about that being high...I could tell some stories. Been at it since about 1971. Best medicine ever.
WHEN WAS THIS AND WHATTTT WERE YOU HIGH ON??? 😊THE 70'S DECADE WAS NOTHINGGGG BUT BEING AND STAYING HIGH MY FRIEND!!! 😊HOPEFULLY STAYING OUT OF TROUBLE AND GETTING AN EDUCATION SOMEWHAT!
If you remember the 70s, you weren't really there. 😊
A lot of weed
I always got kick out the lyrics of this song.. It's the only one I know from them though. I always took the lyrics to be about the circus that shows up around you when you make it big pushing the drugs, friends and family coming to beg for ,homey etc..
"Well, you started off with nothing
And you're proud that you're a self-made man
And your friends they all come crawlin'
Slap you on the back and say, "Please, please"
"
Awe, you cheated yourself by not watching the official video! It's so hilarious.
Funny story, I've been pretty damn high, probably too high but I've never asked the Lord to make it go away. Hilarious dude !
Last year I was on u tube and saw a Conan O'Brien interview with my favorite actress in the world Aubrey Plaza. She's extremely funny and in her own way, extremely attractive.
She went to Italy last year to make a movie and took a lot if gummies with her but had to also go to some Islamic state and I don't know the spelling so it sounds like cutter.
She took her gummies and at the airport someone on the film crew told her I wouldn't do that, your looking at like twenty to forty years in an Islamic state like that. Rather then throw them away, she thought it would be a good idea to eat like all six of them at the airport.
When Conan asked his high she got, her response was "Let me put it this way, Mommy ate too many gummies". She had an outer body experience and couldn't function until the next day. Extremely funny young lady.
Kinda sounds like an acid trip he's experiencing. Many people have said they've seen jokers while trippin

My friend ,
May I suggest another great song by
Jason Isbell
Song is
🎶Cover me Up 🎵
Live from Austin City Limits
You're gonna love it
Keep the good work Biz 👏 ✌️ 🙌 👍🏻 👌
Dude man Reservoir Dogs ;p
He’s drunk and probably high, too. Intoxicated. Me and most of my friends have been there before. I think a lot of people have. Your intoxicated and not really comfortable with where you are. You want to get out of there, but you can’t get out.
😍
I begged God almost every night, back in the 70's!...I'm sure he was sick of hearing from me.
I can't help when I hear this, I see that scene from 'Reservoir Dogs' where he's pourin' gasoline on the cop. I'l say no more, spoiler alert here if you ain't seen it.
Have you reviewed his song -GET IT RIGHT NEXT TIME?
No I have not
@@watchbizmatik ok.
man just flow with the song and enjoy
A one hit wonder!
You obviously haven’t seen the movie Reservoir Dogs, you need to check it out.

Take it easy ☮️💟
Have you done Baker Street? Fire 🔥
Yes I have amazing song
Sounds like MDMA (from what I’ve read anyway . . .)
Its about the music business. You can Google it.
I remember MDA, before MDMA. MDA was not for everyday use (for most of us), but THE MOST incredible high ever. Made your skin extreeeemely sensitive to touch. Even squishing mud between your toes was enough to make you pop, so you can imagine how good sex was. :)
@@angelbulldog4934 I meant MDA (freaking auto correct on street drugs too). Agreed, except for the first 30 minutes or so when I was so paranoid I’d sit on the floor and silently cry.
One hit wonder as far as I know
Lead singer Gerry Rafferty went on to his own solo career in the 70's with hits like "Baker Street" and "Right Down The Line".
They had one other minor hit called "Star."
2 more in the uk star and everything will work out fine .
Hey Biz, did you ever see "Reservoir Dogs". Judging by your reaction, obviously not. Once you see that movie you will NEVER see or hear this song the same way. Trust me. Watch "Rez Dogs" and then listen to this song again. Double dog dare ya.
No I have not
This song is pretty good. As far as artists go probably should move on.
Your opinion only. 🙂
God please take this buzz away 🙏 I'll never do it again. Been there done that. Too many times. Now it's just a scoob and some tunes.
But did you wanna call your mama to come get you? 😅
Never seen Reservoir Dogs? Get off RUclips and watch tv.
TV 🤮
Really tho 😂😂😂
DUDE ! When I was a coke head I had that same experience ( multiple times actually) SWETTIN AND PRAYIN😂
I never tried coke but I can imagine lol
