Hello Tom, and thank you for another wonderful video full of peaceful meditations and useful craft. As someone who has studied ancient mythology and religions for many decades now, I wanted to share some info on the nisse and the links to the Christmas story, and the Icelandic/Swedish/Finnish/Danish/Siberian and now even North American cultures. The thing to keep in mind regarding all mythology and religion is the archetypes in the stories, and how they expand and have variance as it moves from one close culture to another. There will always be one main foundational thread to the story, and usually, a couple subthreads linking the myths. So while they will all have variations, for example, changing the names of the locations, characters, or their attributes, they all go back to a similar archetype. It is of my opinion that while many cultures argue over these differences, it is actually something to be celebrated and discussed as it ties us all together in some similar way, with similar beliefs and legends. There is much wisdom in many of these stories and the more you go down the proverbial rabbit hole, the more fascinating it will become, and even bring great insights...hence the sacredness of these stories.
The story of the Nisse is one of the more fascinating Norse/Scandinavian tales as it relates to ceremonial/ritualistic rites of passage and ethic and moral construction of so many cultures. It is one of the many 'little people' myths that tie ritualistic and ethnobotanical usage to the spread and construction of many religions across the globe. It is mostly believed the story of the Nisse is to help cultures build respect for others, especially respect for others who are very different from us in appearance and personality. They are indeed linked to the Icelandic elves, faries, trolls, hulder folk, skogsrå, "forest spirit" (or Tallemaja "pine tree Mary" in Swedish folklore), ulda, gnomes, hobgoblin, household spirit, brownie, yardman, tomte, tonttu, and many other names. There is confusion over the time in which these myths originated, but the confusion is mostly linked to the changing of the names, as the foundation thread of the story can be traced back to at least the 1600's, and some accounts back to the 13th century. It wasn't until the early 1900's that these stories began to become widely popular in mainstream culture as the foundational information of the folklore was kept somewhat secret or in 'coded' language. Even today, the mushroom connection is often hidden to allow children to still safely access the stories out of fascination.
The foundational link to all of these stories can be traced back to the Amanita muscaria mushroom (aka Fly Agaric) and its unique properties, as well as how it has been used ceremonially and in secret for centuries, especially by the Siberian/Norse shamanic people. You will notice the symbolism in features such as the red cap of these little people, as well as the mushroom itself. It grows in 'fairy rings' especially around the pine trees, and was sometimes preserved in honey for sweetness, and dried on the branches of the pine trees...hence where the 'Christmas tree' myths originate. The 'presents under the tree' and ornaments on the tree are obvious in this context. In some of these myths, the little people are said to have glowing eyes like a cat, which may come from the fact that some strains of these mushrooms glow in the dark. The 'flying reindeer' are a rather well-documented phenomenon of reindeer seeking out and eating these mushrooms and the great leaping strides they take when traversing deep snow and their strange behavior after eating the mushrooms. The stories of Santa dropping the 'presents' down the chimney was how the shamans delivered these sacred gifts because the snow was often too deep to the front doors of people's homes in the great North country. These are just only a few of the archetypes and subthreads of this fascinating folklore and mythology.
These stories have become so popular and have seen a remarkable renaissance over the past two decades largely to the refound usefulness of the mushroom in psychotherapy, especially in treatments for depression and overcoming addictions, trauma, PTSD and many other ailments. It has become so popular now in mainstream culture, there are even 'kids videos' here on the internet now telling the entire story of Santa and the mushroom connection, as well as the Santa and 'Saturnalia' religious connections. Excellent video, very interesting, and I love your cooking equipment, the twisted iron handle and the little dragon hook are very nice. It is so good to see such old style things still in use, the ironwork, the leather goods, the lovely little wooden box, everything a living link with the past, a part of history brought down to our own age, and the story of the Nisse is quite fascinating. Your videos are always so informative and well worth watching, and keep up the 'Viking twist' as you call it. The Old Norse are a fascinating subject, a remarkable culture that is so often overlooked these days, and it is wonderful to see people like yourself keeping the traditions alive. There are no end to your talents "Tom", I like the new gear you have and the wonderful leatherwork as always watching your channel relaxes me and but makes me realise I need to kick my lazy arse out the door and get back into the woods again.
The pot hanger I have seen the design before and such a simple Idea that probably goes back many years, I agree that the small box would have been little use as a First aid kit as it would be too small in my opinion so what you use it for now is what we called a "housewife" in the Army, a small repair kit for your combats and such whilst in the field.

Ha, funny thing, before you even mentioned about Nisse being hidden in your video, I saw one and wasn't sure if the tree was colored that way because wasn't very clear, but was looking like a little man. Hej Tom. Thank you for another inspirational video. I really do appreciate your growing emphasis on Viking culture. The Vikings are a common link between Scandinavia and Britain as Jorvik (modern day York) was captured by the Danish army and was established as the major city when Danelaw was imposed upon northern England and Scotland. There are manyViking festivals held throughout the UK with the main ones being the Jorvik festival and the Viking Fire Festival, or Up Helly Aa, which takes place in Lerwick (Shetland). My ancestry is Celtic and Gaelic when again there is a common heritage. Dublin was founded by the Vikings over 1000 years ago when it was called Dyflin. Through your videos you have kindled an interest in the Vikings. Indeed I have just received my Christmas reading, An Early Meal, from Grimfrost. The government has effectively cancelled Christmas today to try and stop the spread of a mutated strain of Covid and, as I will not be able to visit my family, I will have plenty of time for reading. 😌 Very sad but we all have to make sacrifices if we are to overcome the virus.

There are many fantastic nice places here in Sweden. One option could be the Fyris River going by the old kings mounds of Uppsala. Thats the river that the vikings actually travelled. If you want more tips, just contact me. I usually go by cayak, both on freshwater but also in our archipelagos. All the best!

Thank you for the video! A beautiful location; reminds me of our own forest in Nova Scotia. Enjoyed your presentation very much. The pot hanger is great. I might try to make one. I've been using one of the Chinese gasifier stoves and like it a lot.Even your walking stick makes me feel right "at home" as I have a yellow birch stick about that size which I cut on the land where I live today back in 1977, It has been with me to the Pacific Ocean, the Great Lakes and the North Atlantic, and been in my canoe on several Canadian rivers.Thanks again for your ideas and keep doing what you're doing!

Tom👍👍 A beautiful hike into the dark, mysterious and magical forest. Such wonderful nature to let soak in and enjoy. The new items you brought with you are very cool, the leather pouches are great additions to your pack and the iron pot hanger looks so handy, a great piece of kit. The haversack will certainly be needed with no pockets on the new trousers, and you did a marvelous job making it. A perfect fire for the Viking pot(new hook included)to make the signature Cimbrer coffee w/😉 we have come to expect. It's all official now and the Woodpecker and Ravens agreed as they must have been close because they were loud. I didn't spot Nisse so will have to revisit this video to find them.
