This information is great for anyone who may be planning a PCT hike. Whew! $350 on restaurants is really hard to swallow but it was a birthday celebration and you are in CA on trail so it is what it is. Here's a tip: If you can find a dermatologist office, they have samples of sunscreen (FREE). Mine gave me about 10 tubes of it when I asked and told them I was going backpacking. John from MI

I think to make some comparison, probably after you finish, you could capture an average cost of common resupply items you are buying on trail and compare that later to the same or similar items purchased from your home area or ordered from home to be shipped later. Add in the cost of the box size, medium or large, and arrive at a reasonable cost of shipping vs buying on trail. Of course I recognize that the ship yourself boxes solution to resupply has a down side in terms of timing your pickup with your hiking schedule. Some others I’ve followed on their PCT Thru-hike have done a hybrid version, some resupply on trail and some via mailed boxes they picked up along the way. I don’t hear much talk about the use of bounce boxes anymore. My guess is increased postage rates have impacted severely that strategy. Nice summary. I appreciate the effort both of you put into producing these videos. Good luck 🍀 up trail.

Thanks, I appreciate your thoughts. Yeah bounce boxes seem to have disappeared. From what I’ve heard from some hikers the PO is reluctant to bounce forward sometimes (even unopened) rendering the strategy ineffective. That coupled with costs and inconsistent hours at various POs in small towns may have put an end to them.

Greg thanks for the update. It was very informative and most helpful in planning what I hope will be a thru hike in the next 2 yerars. I wou;ldn't worry too much about what was spent on a zero or nero or how much over budget you go in a short period. Budgets work best over longer periods and there will be long periods later in your hike that will not prersent the opportunity for over spending., I have a request thatt is not related to budgeting but to water. If you have time (and the inclination) can you go over how you handled water resupply so far and what is your plan for the remaining miles until KM. Thanks again for the update.

Thanks for the comments. We’ll try to address water management in one of the daily videos. It’s still a work in progress.

Yeah, I usually get by with a small tube of banana boat. Now that I’m using it daily, and I’ve got a lot of square inches to cover, I’m surprised by the cost of having to protect my skin.

@@ChicaandSunsets better to protect your skin now than have the procedure I had to have recently to repair me not protecting mine as a teenager. Happy Hiking

Thanks for the breakdown. This is very helpful. How widey accepted are credit/debit cards? We know cash is king, what expenses should we plan on cash only? Congrats on getting to Idlewyld, BTW.

Credit/Debit is taken most everywhere. Cash is great for shuttles or to tip a hitch. Cash or Venmo seems to be the accepted payment at hostels.

I don’t mind you having an extravagant 2 weeks on your dime but I have difficulty when you are very actively soliciting donations to support your hike and spending so much money on meals, booze and comforts that are not indicative of some one in need of monetary support

As mentioned elsewhere, this trip is fully funded by us. Those contributing are doing so in appreciation of the information and entertainment the videos provide and the effort that goes into creating them. We could put ads or sell products that would interrupt the viewing experience, instead we’ve chosen to allow those who want to support our content efforts the easy ability to do so. Watch for free, most do. If you get value out of our videos and want to show appreciation you can do that too. Not a hard concept.
