I was a Republican too. I voted for Hillary. The morning after the election, I was at the voters’ bureau at 8:30 when it opened and I switched to Democrat.

I am not an American but I studied in the US for 11 years. I remember back then when my Republican and Democrat friends can have social activities and gatherings together even if they disagree with the politics going on. Nowadays, it seems like as long as you don't share my views, your are my ENEMY. What has happened America. Have you forgotten that even if you share different values, you are all Americans. Really sad to see this happening...
It's because the values of the Republican party have turned into hating the poor, hating people of color, hating immigrants (although they pretend it's just illegal immigrants but the policies of the party have been to make legal immigration nearly impossible). I know I can't be friends with bigots because I have standards. Republicans didn't used to be that way, but under Trump it's how it is. The Republicans with integrity, morals, and character have been leaving the party because they see what it has become.

I became a ward of the state of CA, lived in different homes throughout my formative years, actually prayed daily for god to kill me so that I could leave this world of loveless pain . Once I was freed of government control at 18 yrs, I was lucky because Pres. Johnson created an atmosphere of hope for people like me. I took full advantage of those opportunities, attended the UC system, graduated with honors in the field of political science. I went on to graduate school & read every book, article or journal that could answer my questions of why poverty exists in the richest country on the planet, why slavery, why is there so much hate, war & suffering. I wasn't given anything and most of my peers are long dead, many from substance abuse. I feel that the Republican party is built on lies. I know that the Democrats have done some evil things as well, but there is no comparison today with what Republicans represent compared to Democrats. Trump is a lying, hateful, ignorant immoral man who will lie, cheat & steal his way through life with no remorse. & even now, after all the crap he has done 85% of Republicans still blindly follow him, are loyal to him, some even wish for an authoritarian state headed by this monster. I see myself as a critical thinker, believing that intelligent people know that there is no such thing as unfettered capitalism, that every advanced industrialized democracy has a mixed economy with a combination of private enterprise and socialism. Balancing these institutions & forces can result in maximizing opportunities to the largest number of people. People need to read, listen to different voices to understand why government is necessary. Profit, enriching oneself at the expense of society can be destructive. Money has corrupted the political process. Look at the way Bill Barr & Pompeo behave & all the enablers that have protected Trump at the expense of our democracy, our collective integrity. You have much to be proud of. My early life was also challenging, but education was also my way out of poverty and neglect. Through financial aid, student jobs, and loans, I received a stellar education and built a very good life that I cherish. To hear trump and his cultish followers insult knowledge, logic, science, and education in general is just so disheartening. It’s so against everything I believe that I have zero common ground with them - heck, there’s not even a common language to use with them.
As a humble Norwegian who does not with any controversy, can I say that I am so relieved? All my family, friends in the ex-pat community of Malta. A small island in the Med. I'm much like him, my entire family, going way back , have been republicans. I voted republican until 2016. I was NOT in love with Hilary but I knew she was able to do the job, understood our position in the world and the importance of that and I voted for her as did one of my brothers. The other brother was a can't stand either of them and threw his vote away. I almost couldn't forgive him. I was horrified when Don got elected. I knew who he is, he has showed who he is for 50 years. I am still registered as a Republican and will change that right after the election. Doesn't really matter now and the primary is over and I was able to get rid of a total nut case running for our legislature and so there is a lesser nut case running against the democrat.

Wow! - you said everything I've been thinking and feeling. When I found this channel and that of the Lincoln Project, It gave me hope. I realized that there were many things I could do to help make sure he doesn't get another 4 years. I've been donating my time and money to Republican Voters Against Trump, the Lincoln Project and Biden's campaign. And I'm always looking for other dump Trump groups and organizations to support. My fear about all of this is a scenario I describe as the Jerry Springer or Howard Stern effect. I recall turing on the tv in the early 90's and tuning into Howard Stern's show and being shocked. It was the worst of us but at the same time our true colors. Lets face it, in reality we've always been closer to Jerry Springer than Leave it to Beaver. My fear is 20 or 30 years from now, are we going to look back at this as being tame or boring? I've never been this woried for our country.

Watching so many "I regret voting for Trump" clips really starts to grate on a person, especially when considering how the guy has telegraphed to the WORLD what kind of person he is since the beginning.
There's nothing he's done more recently that is any more egregious than something we'd all been PLENTY aware of before he even became the nominee.
He's the same unabashed xenophobic misogynistic petulant and narcissistic BULLY that he always was, and to overlook ANY of it for a while, for political expediency or whatever reason, and support him only to suddenly stop is disingenuous, at BEST.
Someone should have to EARN our support, not just get it by default until it's whittled away. The FIRST time he publicly denigrated a Gold Star family, or plainly LIED on National Television to the Country, he should have been disqualified for most people.
There is no changing a person at such an advanced age. The man is who he is, and he was never going to somehow "grow" into a less inept and corrupted CON ARTIST.
There are a couple "silver linings" to his presidency, though, believe it or not. One of which is that he has proven so ineffective, thus far. The amount of damage he COULD have done is difficult to imagine, had he been more competent. So, in a way, we're fortunate to be strong enough, as a Country and a community, to withstand most of the effects of his administration. (Knock on wood)
And, we should be able to squeak by and pull ourselves out of the hole he's put us in. Taking some historically valuable lessons from the experience that will strengthen us, as a Nation, in the long run.
The other silver lining is that the bigotry and institutional racism and misogyny that has lain, not quite dormant, but festering just beneath the surface for so long in our society has been exposed rather violently to where we can finally address it.
The "snake" lashing out to strike is the best possible opportunity to most effectively cut off its head. (If that makes sense lol)
Bringing so many ugly things out into the daylight will allow us to more effectively deal with them once and for all. We have been forced into confronting some of the most difficult underlying problems our society has so far kept pushed down, and that will undoubtedly have an "exfoliating" effect (for lack of a better word) on us moving forward towards a more healthy and just existence for EVERYONE. 🇺🇲👍😇

Wow. I hope the Republican Party can return to form. I had always voted democrat but would give them a chance if people like this guy are involved. I am a little further from the ledge realizing that there are people who are rational and understand the threat. I had hoped to see that in our elected officials but that has not been the case. I hope like hell that we can run these scoundrels out of DC and our lives forever.

A thoughtful, broad minded person of conscience. I admire his integrity, and his independence. How anyone can label themselves with a political party has always perplexed me. Independent investigation of the truth is a vital personal attribute within a democracy. Party identity is an attribute of Communism or Fascism.
We have to ask ourselves . Vote by party or the character of the those running for office? Shakespeare wrote, by any other name smells sweet. We've learned that labels mean nothing. Republican or Democrat, it's the character of the person, that's what counts.
