I lived in the north west Congo (DRC) as a child (Gemena). People who started in a Landrover in South Africa would pass by on their 6 month + trip across Africa. That would be an interesting trip. We were told that our roads were the worst in all Africa. I remember the first time I was in a land rover one rainy night on an almost impossible section of road. My family had a pickup, but someone else had a land rover and we waited out the rain in the back. Looks like you wisely stopped just before Congo.

Also there is a youtuber called Mav with similar style living and his shower set up is really simple and efficient. You might want to check it out Love your videos, good luck on further travels
Yes check out Mav for sure, and also Hannah Lee Duggan. She travels in an old Ford van very simply but efficiently, and recently bought a Defender. She spontaneously shoved her foam mattress in it (you should consider one like hers, they're very lightweight) and went for a camp just a couple of weeks ago.

You’re a “free spirited sprite” with spunk and energy! I admire your adventurous personality and courage. I wish I was young again (I’m 70 now) because I’d do more adventurous living. MUCH MORE! The only adventurous thing I did was take a few small trips on my motorcycle. But I’d love to have a small motorhome with storage for my “bike” and then explore everywhere I could. I’M JEALOUS! I’M ENVIOUS!

A fild out table in the rear door is an absolute must, you can even build a small box and store your plates, mugs and cutlery in it - it is transformative! The bed is too cumbersome if you already too lazy on the first trip. Doors or sliders for access may make for easier access rather than wrestling with your bed, but the rooftop tent will spoil you for ease of use. Keep up the good spirit and enjoy finding out what works best for you!
Landy-Life! Put a checker plate "floor" on your roof rack. Then you can camp out on it when you want, and it'll also act as a second skin safari roof to stop the interior of the Landy heating up like an oven in the sun.
hi Eva! You could easily build a 2-flame-cooking shelf on your rear door, but you'd need at least a canvas roof to protect you from bad weather while cooking. And a small folding table to either eat from or to prepare your meals. Keep it simple & have fun!
Hi from Malaysia. You are truly amazing and one lively soul. Very determine in achieving your goal. Glad you are safe in your very first solo trip out in the wild with your new 4X4 defender. Cheers.
Hey, best way to store is having sliding drawers under the bed. Open the back, pull the handles or (finger hole) and from under the bed, on heavy rails, slide out a long drawer, or side by side, long drawers, compartmentalized. If you raise the bed, deeper the drawers. You have a six foot bed; six foot drawers. Left drawer in mine, cooking and food stuffs, medical, maps..etc. Right drawers, clothes, boots, bad weather gear, tools, whatever..Never have to disturb bed. Any spare areas, cubbies. Grab lightweight folding table and chairs from roof. Downside, rain while drawers pulled out. Gotta think ahead. Great channel!
@Eva zu Beck keep your immobilizer keyfob on a keyring with your key - there is a transponder in it that needs to communicate with the immobilizer system and it needs to be nearby to the transceiver coil which is in the steering column.
Just a word of warning, the older Defenders are notorious for the door and/or hinges cracking when left open with a large spare wheel attached. It might be worth looking in to getting a wheel hanger to take some strain off of the door if it's going to be left open frequently. Loving the videos, to the extent that I've just this week put down a deposit on a Defender 110 Puma so that I can start chasing the adventures that I've been putting off for too long!

It might be worth getting a pull out side awning that will give you some shelter when outside cooking etc. Can imagine it wouldn’t be much fun to cook if it was raining

Will create top heavy instability, especially for off roading. Fine for tarmac. Also for solo female, you can't get away if any unpleasantness occurs. If you sleep inside, you can just get in front & drive off. With a tent you have to pack/fold it up, etc. Security-wise, not advisable.

Nah...sitting on the grass is just right. You maybe need to relax. Forget tables and chairs. That green grass was ideal to sit on. What is wrong with some people. Scared of nature.
Good on you Eva.. just getting out there and enjoying the experience’s you have (good and bad) is what it’s all about. Stay safe and keep smiling. As I heard a young lady say recently, “You can’t wait until life isn’t hard anymore, before you decide to be happy “ 🙂
Brilliant, I've just started camping out with my Land Rover, I've had to learn a lot around managing power for battery charging especially when creating youtube videos with numerous cameras.
The best thing for functioning storage is to create a long sliding storage drawer (with top access like you have if it is too wet) / table, cooking area. underneath the bed. So when you open the back door you can just pull it out to gain access to the storage, or pull it out a little to create a cooking / prep area. you can get sliders which can take a lot of weight. best of luck.
Eva, just to tell you that yesterday, spending the day looking for converted vehicles (which I have been doing every day for days 😂) and seeing favorites sold so quickly, I was really in tears , telling me that I will never find the one that suits me. I am leaving my apartment in mid-November, so I started to panic. Then I watched your videos again, and your energy boosted me so much, in a few minutes I regained my confidence. A real inspiration. What a badass in this Defender. Thank you so much for showing me that it is possible, and for blazing a path.
Definitely. I think they were thinking simplicity without the functionality and easy accessibility. I’ve noticed this with men building spaces., seen in corporate building, houses, stores, and especially BATHROOMS. the plans look great on paper but they don’t fully realize how the actual space will flow and function.
I hope you know how incredible and fascinating you are! Rewatching this video, years later, after following your North America expedition... seeing how Odessy has evolved, but also you. Be encouraged! You are brave, and so inspiring.
The world belongs to the brave! I love that it is the truest thing I have heard in a minute. 🤙 A cell phone signal booster will definitely be beneficial to your rover great safety item.
Don't know if you know about the "scrubba" washing bag. It's a tiny washingbag that you fill upp with water (from a stream or whatever) put your clothes in and put a washing paper in. Scrub the clothes for 3 minutes and voila, u got clean clothes. Love it! It can also be used as a water safe carrier for electronics. Love your channel 💚
Such a cool setup, a flip up/down table on the rear door might be a good investment for cooking on. Grab an old tile to put your stove onto make for an easy clean up process. Best of luck
Blessings on your great adventure! One thing you've discovered is you need to put your hinge on the opposite side of your door (underneath your bed) Then you could cut some 2x2's to prop the door up which would in theory hold up your mattress & bedding. Keep smiling. Remember "Live & Learn!"
I saw your flame blackened pots. It may be too late for these unless you want to spend a while scrubbing them clean, but rub dish soap on the exterior of the pot before putting it on the fire. They won't get black and it cleans really quickly when you are done.
Eva, I live in Kenya and have always wanted a Defender. I was considering a small one, just as my run about and possibly day Safaris but now you have inspired me to get one large enough as a camper and with a hard top back roof instead of the no roofs I’ve been looking at. Of course I can drive to South Africa or put it on a boat and go adventuring. So glad I found your channel.
Eva, think of this minor breakdown as a blessing, it could of happened miles from nowhere with no help in sight. Would be a good idea to carry some supplies to get you out of trouble. An exhaust jack or bottle jack is a good idea plus a piece of steel pipe to go over the wheel brace. This will give you extra leverage to remove the wheel nuts in case you get a flat tyre.
My father has a BJ-40, the mileage counter is probably the only thing that stopped working (and the amount of miles it has now wouldn't even fit anymore). When we go off roading, we spend 80% of the time pulling other trucks out ditches haha (even more modern land cruisers). Those things are some serious machines man...
What a good show. The tent on the roof is wonderful, I had it on my 4x4 panda, I spent beautiful nights of rest after kilometres of travelling. Good way .
Have you tried using magnets on your curtains? With the exposed metal on the Defender that should be enough to hold them up and tight against the windows :) Looking forward to see what you do with the build out!
@@alanlansdell7533 You learn something new everyday. My dad had a Defender when I was growing up and I seem to remember hanging stuff up on magnets, but that might be my recollection playing tricks on me.
What a nice build. Not sure I would expand the bed every night but that's just me, I'm all about making it as easy as possible. 😊 I spent 6 weeks camping in my SUV, 25" wide bed platform with trifold memory foam mattress, Iceco fridge, EcoFlow power supply, pop up canopy to serve as my living room/dining room/kitchen, small privacy tent for the loo. The SUV was bedroom/pantry/closet, roof box "attic" for additional storage. I would still be out there but my poor little dog ended up with a torn cruciate ligament (CCL) so we had to return home for her surgery and rehab. Hannah Banana is recovering from the surgery to repair the torn ligament, reposition her fused patellar luxation and tighten another ligament. Unfortunately, you can't rehab a surgery like this while on the road so our adventures and travels are on hold. Can't wait to get back out there! I hope you enjoy the peace and quiet, being surrounded by nature, the serenity that comes from being in the middle of the forest with wind and bird song, meeting other people who have the same dream. It is truly living the best life!
i started to follow your channel when i saw your trip in the middle of a desert and i loved it. i havent seen any girl doing such a thing before. you are really brave..keep goin! Salaam from Kuwait.
Little tip for things like wind noise or the "drumming" from the jiggley mic: Use a high pass filter. You being female (and having a higher pitched voice) makes this really useful when you have rumbling sounds in the audio track.
Just always think if something goes wrong what will you do? There will always be a solution and someone to help. In most cases, if not you find a solution. As far as design and function. I have learned take a short trip to see how it goes and what you need, etc. I love traveling. Your vehicle looks great so far. You are amazing! Enjoy!
I love how the ladder goes in front of the rear license plate, you won't have to worry about automated speed cameras ;-P For the bed, I strongly suggest that you replace the very unpractical folding plank with a sliding one, and don't forget to drill holes in it so the mattress won't get moldy: you'll only have to pull it instead of messing the whole bed/couch up. For your fan, make it so it blows stale air outside, or it'll get hard to breathe inside. For the shower, you can build a very simple one, that auto-heats in the sun, with a simple PVC tube along the roof. Thanks for the video, and I wish you lots of great trips in your new car!
Every movie you ever watched was someone fake sleeping. Get over yourself. Why knock someone putting the effort in. Why not wish her the best. What’s the point of even making such a comment.
The Defender TD5 is the best One and super reliable...dont listen to anyone who tells you any different! It is simple to service yourself with a few tools..use Magnatec oil and theres no reason why the oil should be golden and not black. She is a beauty!..hope you have aircon!!

Forget tables and chairs. That green grass was ideal to sit on. What is wrong with some people. Scared of nature.
She wants a table.
Best quote from the video : " The world belong to the brave ". I got inspired in the instant indeed.
Welcome to Land Rovers. Character of their own. probably star when you get back.
Never. I repeat, NEVER leave your phone at home if you’re driving a Land Rover.
why so
Because the phone can have an electric dysfonction and set your house on fire.
I’ve had a defender for 15 years. Brilliant vehicle. Not so comfortable
Always, I repeat, ALWAYS leave your Land Rover at home and drive something more reliable, like a Toyota Land Cruiser.
@@rocketraccoon1976 ur literally saying the opposite thing
Eva, just to tell you that yesterday, spending the day looking for converted vehicles (which I have been doing every day for days 😂) and seeing favorites sold so quickly, I was really in tears , telling me that I will never find the one that suits me. I am leaving my apartment in mid-November, so I started to panic. Then I watched your videos again, and your energy boosted me so much, in a few minutes I regained my confidence. A real inspiration. What a badass in this Defender. Thank you so much for showing me that it is possible, and for blazing a path.
You are an inspiration for every female traveler, thank you!
Thanks lovely!
The storage space needs slide out draws
Definitely. I think they were thinking simplicity without the functionality and easy accessibility. I’ve noticed this with men building spaces., seen in corporate building, houses, stores, and especially BATHROOMS. the plans look great on paper but they don’t fully realize how the actual space will flow and function.
exactly, the only way to go.
I hope you know how incredible and fascinating you are! Rewatching this video, years later, after following your North America expedition... seeing how Odessy has evolved, but also you. Be encouraged! You are brave, and so inspiring.
1st rule of surviving - don't pour out your boiling liquid! That has a lot of nutrients in it (and it's sterilized water!). Let it cool and drink it.
Also please clean that disgusting sauce-pan! All you need is a wire scourer + fairy liquid! Maybe get a non-stick pan as well?
We are all watching closely. Let's see what you come out of your new truck!
Well done Eva as usual. Sharing your adventures and experiences with you is great. Thank you.
I been looking for someone like you my whole life! Keep being AWESOME!
I’m literally so happy for her!
Can’t wait for more videos ✨
I love this RUclips channel so much! ❤
Such a cool setup, a flip up/down table on the rear door might be a good investment for cooking on. Grab an old tile to put your stove onto make for an easy clean up process. Best of luck
turn the under bed storage into pull out draws that you can access while sitting on the bed. Perhaps three.
I can't wait to see how you arrange the defender, & your adventures 😁
Blessings on your great adventure!
One thing you've discovered is you need to put your hinge on the opposite side of your door (underneath your bed)
Then you could cut some 2x2's to prop the door up which would in theory hold up your mattress & bedding.
Keep smiling. Remember "Live & Learn!"
Love it! Good job Eva! Greetings from Romania!
This, combined with the recent travel restrictions, has made me yearn for travel again
I saw your flame blackened pots. It may be too late for these unless you want to spend a while scrubbing them clean, but rub dish soap on the exterior of the pot before putting it on the fire. They won't get black and it cleans really quickly when you are done.
Looks like a good job Eva, I hope you enjoy yourself.
Haha, you are so relatable. 'Let's do this' 'Oh, HOW do I do this?' 'What the hell did I do this for?' 'Oh well, it's kinda working'
Chaos, I love it.
The world belongs to the brave. Your the bravest ♥️
“World belongs to the brave” exactly dear

Awesome! I have a small ecoflow power generator that I love. Throw 200 watt panels to charge. Super minimal and can charge all your devices.
4:50 - it wasn't the right time. See it as a protective universe that is trying to help you :-)
I would agree to that 😀❤
I was wondering whether she isn't afraid of sheep ticks while eating in this long grass.
Oh my God. This is so genuine. Love this.
When you want to go somewhere you buy a land rover, when you want to return... buy a land cruiser
Not funny didn't laugh
@@ChristopherWhite-yg4hh
I did.
😆😆😆
HA! All too true.
Toyota anything > other
My father has a BJ-40, the mileage counter is probably the only thing that stopped working (and the amount of miles it has now wouldn't even fit anymore).
Good way .
There is a special kind of sound dampening foam for in/around your engine
Have you tried using magnets on your curtains? With the exposed metal on the Defender that should be enough to hold them up and tight against the windows :) Looking forward to see what you do with the build out!
great website Ive been using for many years - KJmagnetics
It's mostly aluminium....

Ladder? Diesel Defenders drivers don't worry about speed cameras
When I break down close to home I consider it a blessing!! Great video Eva.
the fact that she puts up camera before she wakes up and records herself waking up again is just funny
She's a story teller that's why we enjoy her videos!
💖😊😁🤗😄
Maybe she recorded all night. 🤷 It is safer that way
That's the fucked up state of the world these days.
Every movie you ever watched was someone fake sleeping. Get over yourself. Why knock someone putting the effort in. Why not wish her the best. What’s the point of even making such a comment.
@@miracleshappen4483 Good observation! “A picture is worth a thousand words.” This is a visual medium. Don’t tell it when you can show it.
LandRovers, particularly the Old Ones required a lot of maintenance. A Toyota Landcruiser would be perfect for this.
That would also be my first choice. I know Land Rovers sound cooler but a Landcruiser is the closest a standard vehicle comes to indestructible.
Yeah, but it would make for a very boring video....
The Defender TD5 is the best One and super reliable...dont listen to anyone who tells you any different! It is simple to service yourself with a few tools..use Magnatec oil and theres no reason why the oil should be golden and not black. She is a beauty!..hope you have aircon!!
"Defender life" sounds like a warrior defending the defenceless rural villagers from raiding bandits 😆
You're so lucky to have such a handy family.
@6.16 Touching the frame with the wrench when tightening the battery... I saw the sparks in my head..... she have no idea how lucky she was that day..... keep the good work....
Too many keys and things on your ignition key ring is heavy and can mess up your ignition. Especially with the harsh and bumpy roads causing more stress💪
quality content. it’s cool to watch this series , as a seafarer.
Going to be following your adventures 😀 just got my Defender as well, so anything you do on the car will be super helpful. Good video editing. When you make it look easy it shows skill at pre-planning, it takes hours to finish a few minutes post. Thank you for including my countryman Graeme Bell channel, very useful information. Good luck and have fun!
you have a secret place for spare key incase you lock yourself out , im in father mode
It's with her boyfriend in the other truck.

@@overlandready don’t, you’ll freak her out, she thinks a locked defender will remain locked long enough to drive away should any intruder try to get in..........😂😂😂😂😂
@@chillee2531 Thatt is why you make the locks work... When I bought mine you could literally open the vehicle with a flat thumb on the lock face, now you need the key, shortly you'll need something else as there will not be any external key hole. :-D If Eva reads this then hopefully she'll get the locks replaced or cleaned and regreased - something she can do. :-D
