Guy involved in UK shipping here. I've never been to New York City, but my late father used to sail from Liverpool and Southampton with Cunard in the early 60's. I think I counted that he 'crossed the pond' about 60 times on the old Queen Mary and other Cunard liners of the time including The Caronia,Carinthia,Sylvania and Saxonia. Your film was of particular interest, as I remember him telling me he had been a member of crew who had sailed another ship (not belonging to Cunard) out of the Bayonne Dry Dock.
Far out!! Thank you for telling me all that and thank you for watching!! It’s very cool how that Dry Dock is still operational today. Crossing the pond 60 times is pretty cool as well!! Thanks again 🫡
Really like the overview on the paper chart. I still dig the old paper charts as well as digital chart plotters. The overview helped me picture the job. USNS Cape Kennedy is an important part of the ready reserve fleet! Thanks, for the new angle as well. Great vid
Might be in inches. 120 inches is 10 feet. Awesome videos. I just found your channel and love em'. Between you, Tim B at sea, and the few videos I've seen of Cape Ann Towing have made me really want to pursue a career as a tugboat captain.
Not sure why I'm so fascinated with Tug ops. There's just something about tugs, not sure if it's the power, the skill it takes to operate one, the water, who knows. Maybe just a combo of all of it, but regardless thanx for giving us a peek into your world and what you do. You do it well!
Excellent 😊 video as usual . That is one big tug on the left . There was one in Rhode Island years ago like that , you could see that thing coming across the bay a mile away 😮
Amazing video as always I love how calm you guys are when towing ships around I would get so nervous doing that love from your fellow neighbourhood over the pond uk
It's amazing how you are able to make such fine movements of such a huge ship. Hard to imagine how such big equipment can be so delicate in it's touch.
Was great to see the slight touch of your controls (engines, winches and helm) co-ordinate with the skippers on radio in keeping ultimate control over the entire manouvere here something I have never seen before. Looks like a nice tug boat but I am wondering if you have a helm control in each hand? Thanks for letting us know what goes on the cockpit of a Tug.
@@tugboatwilly843 Thank you for your response yes thanks a few more watches of your videos and I found the dual control view was great to see and I know a heck of a lot more about tugs than I did previously. Thanks for sharing.
Another good trip Willy, thanks for sharing! Is Global Ocean Terminal the old MOTBY facility by any chance? Tied up there during one of the OP SAIL events aboard a USCG Aux. vessel - think it was back in '92. 😎
Willy, We fished the Raritan bay for years and we kept our boat in a marina in Sea Warren. I’ve watched you guys guide ships and barges in and out do the AK for years. But it’s fun to see it from your perspective..
Great Job Captain!!! That was very frigging cool. 👍🏻 Thanks for sharing this with us and the length of the video, who cares. I only wish we could’ve seen the whole length of that ship. How long was it? Ron
That outside berth is the worst. So much of the wall has fallen in or washed out. Next on should be out of Brooklyn SY with ferries, fire boats, and rotary current!
Don't know if you covered this before, but I was wondering, Is your Tug a Stern Drive, or Front Driver? Following your helm movement's looks like a front driver to me, just wondering! Great Channel, love the longer vids and the cool info you share, what an awesome job you have!
Hey... Captain Willy....Great Channel....... Quick question... Where's the throttle to control the engines?? Are they're in the steering handles???.... Wishing You Personally.....A Great Future as a Tugboat Captain.....Keep er coming Captain!!!!!
Thanks! I have a camera off my left hand that shows behind me or mostly I just look back right quick. If it’s tight Carlos lets me know what’s going on. I also have the chart plotter right in front of me.
Hey Capt Willy. Great tug of course. I have one question. So are you in charge of your tug or is another in charge and you go with what they say?? Sorry for the questions. Take care bro.
Hey now! Me and my relief Capt Jackie are in charge of keeping the Tug looking nice and everything working properly. We talk a lot and are on the same page about everything. Thanks for watching 🫡
There a lot going on ,and the whole port must be buzzing with activity that doesnt show up until one looks real hard. Just with that ship movement, there must be many personal involved . Good work ,your coms are clear and precise, understanding thee various voices must be hard ?
Thx so much for posting and telling me about it. That's quite a glass-fronted view you have. I have a Q: although the Cape Kennedy was dead ship, it seemed cooling water was coming from her bow thruster portside of the bulb. Was her thruster used during the maneuver?
I don't see you changing throttle position very much if at all. Do you keep the engines at a steady RPM most of the time and just control speed with the Z drives?
#106 Thank You "Tugboat Willy". I'm 76 years old and helmed the Railroad Carferrys on Lake Michigan. Not everyone has the patience to do what you do, or us. Happiness is The Highway --- er, The Waterway, too!
You have to go dual-cam! 😊 In the meantime, have you tried on the ceiling behind your head? Could work for outside view and both hands... Keep it going!
Looking forward to seeing an almost same video in around 4 weeks of the BB62 USS New Jersey coming out of Dry Dock in Phila. I believe the same Tow company is doing that job also. With 4 tugs.

I've never given it any thought about being a tug captain, but dang, that looks like an AWESOME job. Thanks for sharing.
Much appreciated 🤙
Your channel keeps getting better. The new angle is awesome!
I appreciate you! Thanks for watching 🫡
Thanks for posting these. It’s been fascinating seeing a tug’s perspective.

Good morning Capt! I think that was the same one that was in RI. Happy Saturday my friend 🫡
I like the different view, nice job.. got you pushing and pullin, had a couple of big girls pushing with you too..
Appreciate it! We did and one on the stern once we got it out.

Much appreciated! Thanks for watching and the nice remarks 🤙
Excellent video. The new camera position is much better to see what’s going. Keep the unusual jobs coming to. The longer the better for us.
Much appreciated!! I’m going to do a lot more at that angle. Thanks for watching 🤙

Awesome video. Think maybe some time you could do some maneuvering videos? Like how to walk the boat port and starboard etc?
You got it! Much appreciated as always!!
Great video. Absolutely amazing what you guys can do!
Glad you enjoy it!
love the videos... new angle is great would love to see angle where we could see both youre controls while operating... Thanks for posting
I got a new mount coming so hopefully I can make one like that. Thanks for watching!

that's a pretty cool office. i see thrusters. asked on another vid, how do you see behind you? radar?

Yes the thrusters were used. No power on the ME. Thanks for watching! 🤙
Another awesome video! Just curious as to why you had to keep stopping?
Much appreciated! You have to move the lines from the ship to dry dock as we come out. Thanks for watching!
Nice vid. Crystal ball time gauging when your bow meets the bulb.
Metric draft marks?
Thank ya! Possibly
Do you guys have a hook on the back with an emergency release?
We you are towing a barge you have that. For that maneuver there was not one. Thanks for watching! 🤙
Awesome video big like
Big thanks! Much appreciated 🤙
Great job yall, but one question, Isn’t a “Dead Ship” mean No Propulsion or Steerage? Just curious
Correct. Only the thrusters were operational. Thanks for watching 🤙
I don't see you changing throttle position very much if at all. Do you keep the engines at a steady RPM most of the time and just control speed with the Z drives?
For that job I did. Mostly everything coming out of a tight spot like that is done in easy. Thanks for watching 🤙

3 tugs, no wind and the ship's bow thruster is operational...nice job, lol those are the ones that sometimes go south..
Much appreciated! Yes they are but Capt Baker did the damn thing!
It would be great to hear some narration on what you’re doing with your winch. Great job, sir.
Will do! Thanks for watching 🤙
may not be exciting: but still well worth the watch.. Thank you for putting it up :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
When i first time saw the title i thought this is a video about you rubbing one out at the drydock !
🤣😂🤣
Thanks for watching!

Thank you very much! 🤙
Pretty sure i heard the Elk River on the radio while they were coming out.
I believe that was them! Thanks for watching 🤙
Thanks for sailing the Sun out of the NC. I get my phone signal back.
🤙
I really liked the middle angle you used when demonstrating how the z system works, then we can see both hands working. Was very interesting.
Hey now! Glad that you liked it! I will make more from that angle in the future. I’ve got some up like that now 🤙
That looks like a Navy contractor support ship or Merchant Marine ship you are pulling
Yes sir! Thanks for watching 🤙
That was interesting how slow and coordinated you have to work together
It’s like a dance! Thanks for watching 🤙
Cheers from the South Carolina Lowcountry!
