This game was awesome! Mainly because of the story line and plot twist. Me and a buddy spent the better part of 4 days playing it back in the day and when we finally beat it we just hugged it out hahaha. Lost a lot of good men out there but we saved the earth haha

This game actually has one of the greatest multiplayer modes I've ever played. It's the one where you collect colored cubes. If you play it with someone who is good at the game, it's an absolute blast and can get very intense.

@@n64glennplant it is frustrating having the x axis backwards and being unable to change it, but everything else clicked fast for me. I enjoy this game enough to slog through the mucky controls (they definitely can be rough) and git gud. Oh, and for any Nintendo devs that might be spying: button mapping would be a great improvement to these classics if done properly.

I got the PS2 version as a Christmas present one year. Absolutely loved it. Loved it so much I went and bought a second copy after I scratched the original disc.

Winback is actually a very addictive game with a cool mix of realistic and arcade styles.
There is also a skit that will play if you leave it on the start game screen long enough, which they made easy to miss for some stupid reason.

I think this game is heavily underappreciated, and I like both versions of it, but if I had to pick just one, I'd go with the ps2 port, really only because I believe the camera works better in that version. Not to put down the n64 version, I certainly wouldn't mind getting an n64 again just for that alone. It's no Metal Gear Solid, but I'd go out of my way to find a copy of this game.

I remember *really* enjoying the multiplayer in this game, you can play as *all* of the bosses after unlocking each one with a unique, hidden challenge !
And *every* boss except the flamethrower guy and the rocket launcher guy are balanced because they can't take cover and can't pick up alternative weapons (which sounds boring, but actually isn't) - and the 2 overpowered characters at least move at only half the normal speed.

Thanks for covering this one Glenn, I just beat this game last week (pissing off my girlfriend visiting from Japan a little bit, haha). It was initially very fun, but became trying at the end. And that last boss battle....so stupid.
The back of the US Box proudly quotes Gamer's Republic - "The closest thing to Metal Gear Solid for your Nintendo 64." It is definitely the closest thing to MGS for the N64, but it still isn't that great. The controls were just slightly too unresponsive and the color palette was a little to grey for me to call it a smash hit.
They should have tried to vary up the gameplay a little more. So many guards flooding in and basic laser puzzles. As Dome-Candy Games noted, the shotgun blast is barely any better than a spread shot from Gradius or Contra.
That said, I would classify it as a hidden gem. The N64 was the system where Nintendo lost their 3rd party support making it a challenge to find good non-Nintendo games.
Well, definitely a great review after a run of many sports titles. Very professional, not making any S.C.A.T. jokes.

Man..I just remembered this game when a friend on Facebook made a status "name a game you feel only you have played" and honestly..nobody I know in person knows what this game is.
I used to rent this game from the game store when I was a kid, I refused to take it back, and would rack up 80 to 100 dollars in late fees. The rental place cleared my late fees a few times because they knew how much I liked that game. No lie, I played it and beat it countless times.
Then..socom was released on ps2 and my life changed. Had a clan, we were real tight. My homie kyle and my homie mike joined the army, got hooked up with the 101st airborn ft Campbell ky no slack division. Was attatched to a socom unit..went out there for 2 months to see kyle and hung with the 101.
Long story shirt winback changed my life. I went to ft Campbell to meet my friends from socom, we all still talk regularly. Winback started it all.

I remember as a kid back in 99 renting this game on my N64 from BlockBuster when it came out, and not knowing what this game was about.
Then after playing it once; I was loving the crap out of this game where I ended up having a family member buy it for me not long after and then playing the crap out of it over, and over, and over again.
I must have played and beat it like 100 times lol! Good times and good memories, what a great game!
Also, to think how many games this game went on to inspire afterwards is crazy!

I played the hell out of this game when I had an N64. It was my alternative to Metal Gear Solid when I didn't have a PS1. I even made a playthrough for the PS2 version since I no longer had the N64 system. It was of those games that I knew like the back of my hand. Too bad the sequel was pretty awful.

As someone who loves to play sniper, and accuracy matters I loved this game. My favorite feature by far was that after it locked on target you could immediately easily re aim and go fore head shots. I almost exclusively used the hand gun as I went through the game head shotting everyone.

I know it's an old review on an old game, but I like your videos, and I totally had this on N64 back when I was a kid.
There were a couple 3rd person N64 shooters like Zero Hour and Gemini and Winback that were almost genius and ahead of their time.

I absolutely LOVE the game! I got so good with the laser sight I was able to quick draw headshots 9/10 of the time.
I bought the PS2 version later. But didn't like the controls as much. I found aiming on the ps2 analog sticks less responsive than the n64 stick.
But appreciated the updated graphics and voice acting.

  • @rustylasagna

I finished the game recently. And while I don't think the game is terrible, there are a number of issues that hold this game back for me. I didn't realize during my playthrough that I could turn the camera to manual mode, so the camera was fighting me a lot in tight spaces. The game's environment also look bland, and most of the levels tend to tie into each other. This is especially bad since you even go back to a previous section of an older level two or three times. And I really couldn't get into the story or music.
It's definitely not bad. It's a very innovative game for the time, and it led to games like Resident Evil 4 later on, which probably took influence from this game. And the bosses do shake things up. Just kind of wish that more enemy types were added to shake things up. And a better variety of gameplay.

As I now have all the games I have fond memories of for the n64, this is one of the few I want to get still, though I have never played it. Hoping to see it at a retro market or the next local comic con. It sounds great, and as I am one of the few fans of the n64 mission impossible game, I expect to love this.

As always, I love your reviews Glenn. This game definitely has true merit to it. Unfortunately what I'd say about it is what you've already said, the action allowed it to carve out it's only legacy as a military action shooter. Some MGS snobs talk down to it, but it's like you said it wasn't meant to be MGS, it was meant to be action oriented and it does that well. I love the military characters, both the good and the bad.

C-Threep UPDATE: I got it on eBay, popped it into my N64 yesterday...it looks pretty terrible on my HD TV and I didn't realized I needed a Memory Pak to save the game. But I guess the muddy graphics are part of the game's charm, eh?

great review man, may I personally say the part where jin the ninja, came in was the most epic part. where you would expect a lot of enemies going down to the generator but instead....dun dun DUN you get a awesome ninja battle. p.s. I recommend the ps2 version since the better graphics give more clearer curve on player models. :)
