    It is funny how the N64 was basically carried entirely by two developers; Nintendo and Rare. Sure there were a few good games that were made by other companies, but they weren't nearly as successful.

    • @onaretrotip
      @onaretrotip  6 лет назад +14

      Haha I know, right. Doubt I would have ever bought one if it hadn't been for Rare.

    • @gwuag
      @gwuag 6 лет назад +17

      The N64 presented 3 issues for developers. 1 it was difficult to program games for. 2 cartridges held much less information than a disk did. Games would load faster but games like Final Fantasy VII would have required something like 30 cartridges instead of 3 disks. 3 the biggest issue was Nintendo wanted developers to create games exclusively for the N64, where strict on content, and Shigeru Miyamoto was kinda of a dick. He tore apart Argonaut Games who developed the original Star Fox as well as the Super FX chip needed to play the game on a Super Nintendo. He scraped their Star Fox Sequel that was supposed to come out towards the end of the Super Nintendo's life span because it looked better than the Version he was developing for the new N64 console. Then after cancelling the game Shigeru harvested the assets and used them in other games, most notably certain camera controls and functions for Super Mario 64. So its not surprising other developers didn't want to work with Nintendo. Even Rare incurred the wrath of Shigeru during their Super Nintendo days. He absolutely despised the pre-rendered 3D sprites that gave games like Donkey Kong Country their unique look.

      All thanks to digital distribution which Valve popularized. Valve has done more damage to gaming than any other company, EA wishes they were as bad as Valve.

    • @destroyerbreaker7394
      @destroyerbreaker7394 5 лет назад

      @@randomtask3539 ...How?
      Digital distribution already existed before Valve, and i don't think they invented DLC, pre-orders, early acess or anything like that, other devs did and then they really went for it.
      Hell, you can't even say that Early Acess is new when roguelikes were constantly getting upgraded in the 80's already, nor can you say that games didn't get released without bugs or incompleted, considering Robocop on the C64 wasn't finished or you couldn't complete Jet Set Willy at release.
      Don't get me wrong, DLC sucks when they are present on release or only add things like skins, and it's annoying getting day one patches, but Valve didn't force anyone to do that.

    Those GTA 64 screenshots, I remember back in the days reading that magazine "Hobby Consolas". It is kinda shitty nowadays but it was THE MAGAZINE in Spain during several years. I have translated into english what's written in Spanish for you guyz (11:00):
    "Finally, after a lot of months after a lot of months of continued stalking, DMA Design have spoken and approved the release of an N64 version of its super violent car game, GTA.
    It has cost them a lot of effort. In fact, two long years ago, when the N64 began its journey we could already see a version of GTA for the console that took advantage of the Silicon Valley engine, in the DMA headquarters. At that time, the problem was not to make the conversion to the N64 but to get Nintendo to give its approval to an argument full of bullets to innocent pedestrians and suspicious deals between mobsters.
    However, now that Resident Evil has come out for this console, as well as super bloody Turok and the not exactly childish Perfect Dark, the big N could not say no. The full version at 50% has debuted at E3, proving that 1999 will not only be the year of the great games for N64, but also the year of the great N64 games for adults. We will go into details about GTA 64 next month."
    Img1 (left):Move the camera away as much as you want and then bring it closer. How cool!
    Img2 (right): Start dreaming about GTA 64, because within a very short time you will have it in your hands.
    The rest is history. This game is nowhere to be found.

      I think one of the reasons why the N64DD was DOA was the fact you could only buy it off the internet and online shopping was a brand new concept back in 1996. So new in fact that almost no one really did it at the time. Why Nintendo did it is a complete mystery to me but it would have had a much better time if it was sold in retail stores like GAME in the UK where you sound like you are from (you sound British to me) or Best Buy in the US where I live. I dunno if you would agree with me or not, but it is the main reason why it did not go well from what I have heard.

    One of the ultimate games that never saw a release was Contra 64. I was devastated!!!! I remember reading an editorial from this great video game magazine called NEXT GENERATION MAGAZINE from the 90’s/early 2000’s and it discussed everything about the N64; Good and Bad.
    Contra 64 was only mentioned with a title screen and nothing more. After that, that was it. I held on to a glimmer of hope when two Castlevania titles came out on the N64, but nothing.
    However, I am so happy that games like Conker’s Bad Fur Day and Resident Evil 2 did make their debut to the N64 despite being late to the life of the console. I was worried that both games would not make it. Unfortunately, Resident Evil Zero was moved to the GameCube Nintendo. I would have still loved to have an N64 version.

      onaretrotip - I would have wanted a direct sequel to Contra III: The Alien Wars for the Super Nintendo, but this time with four players simultaneously.
      The graphics would be a lot like the SNES characters designs and color scheme, not the SONY PLAYSTATION Contra’s and the storyline would be a continuation of sorts. Such a missed opportunity. Maybe if those Castlevanja games did well, MAYBE the Nintendo 64 would have gotten it’s very own Contra game.
      Another game that was only briefly mentioned in magazines was Metroid 64. Again, would have loved to have seen how the N64 would have handled that series.

    I had a feeling that there was more to the history of Star Fox Adventures. When a known franchise switches gears that dramatically, it's usually the case of "let's convert a standalone game into a known franchise" situation. Like Kirby's Epic Yarn and Mario Bros 2.

    Umm...
    GTA64 not happening had nothing to do with Nintendo's attitude towards violence. Nintendo did a bit of censorship during the NES and early SNES-days, yet people think that this is a common practice until this very day.
    GTA64 not happening is in all likelyhood down to DMA/Rockstar being pissed that Nintendo being a general pain in the ass while developing Body Harvest.

      I'm sorry but I don't see how one can't like the game or at least acknowledge how influential it was. I don't mean any disrespect though, if you don't dig it you don't dig it. Seeing what we'd eventually got from Metroid Prime on the GameCube and during the time period that the N64 was in its prime, why didn't they make Metroid 64 into a first person shooter? Games like Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake, and Half Life were incredibly popular and a Metroid game on either the Doom engine, Quake engine, or more preferable the build engine that Duke Nukem is on would been huge on the N64!

    While I'm kind of sad that we never got a Metroid title on the N64, I agree that the N64 controller would NOT be conducive to a grand experience with a 3D Metroid title. I think we were better off not having one for that reason alone; it would have been hated for the controls alone.

    Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem was moved from N64 to GameCube.
    Frogger 2: Swampy’s Revenge, which did come out on Dreamcast, PS1, PC and GBC, was also planned for N64.
    40 Winks, which was on PS1 but they just finally released the N64 version last year.

  • @Sunsetaren
    @Sunsetaren 6 лет назад +12

    11:04 The reason why GTA 64 was cancelled was due to the Fallout between the Big N & DMA when Nintendo's Japanese & North American branches couldn't agree on how DMA's other title "Body Harvest" should be portrayed. The reason why they meddled into the development cycle besides funding the game was due to another feud they were having with Square Enix at the time. Why? Final Fantasy 7!!!!!!! Nintendo got pissed that Square Enix decided to abandon them for Sony, So they wanted more RPGs for the N64 compete with Sony's new lineup! It was then that Shigeru Miyamoto decided that screwing up Dinosaur Planet wasn't enough, So he requested Body Harvest to be converted to an RPG despite the fact that it won't work as 1! Surprisingly, the North American branch was more tolerant of DMA's vision but the Japanese branch wanted changes made to the character, the story & gameplay mechanics. The North American branch defended DMA's plans to the end & thus the Japanese branch got so frustrated with the bickering & broken mechanics from said bickering that they pulled funding and cancelled Body Harvest altogether, thus forcing DMA into bankruptcy & then they were bought by Gremlin studios who pitied DMA & released the game in both European and North American markets but due to the grudge held against the Japanese, DMA banned the game from Japan & when they started on GTA, they refused to release a title for Nintendo Home Consoles!!!

    • @onaretrotip
      @onaretrotip  6 лет назад

      Interesting!

    • @Sunsetaren
      @Sunsetaren 6 лет назад +1

      onaretrotip I meant to say Gremlin Graphics alternatively known as Gremlin Interactive who bought out DMA Design. Believe it or not: after the release of Body Harvest, Gremlin Graphics was bought out by Infogrames & although they kept it until their own acquisition, they sold off DMA Design to Take 2 Interactive & if it weren't for Take 2, GTA either would have never existed to begin with or would have been different from the series we got & thus cancelled by the time the global recession hit in 2008!
      3:11 Care to know what became of Gametek after their demise? They were bought out by the same company that has DMA Design today back in 1999, the same year Infogrames sold DMA Design to them. However, the rights for RoboTech games were acquired by TDK Media Active back in 1997 & they told Studio Nue (The Anime's Creator) that they rather start from scratch and so Crystal Dreams is what it sounds like... A mere dream that may never come true! TDK did make 2 different games in the series before biting the dust themselves & got acquired by our good friends at Take 2 Interactive! The final game in the series was then picked up by Global Star who themselves were acquired by our good friend, Take 2 Interactive shortly after release & became 2K Games!! So in a way, Take 2 Interactive was involved with the game series since the beginning! The only way to get Crystal Dreams off the ground is to either reproduce it or somehow convince Take 2 Interactive to renegotiate the rights for the license from Nue Studios & distribute the game as a digital title. I guess it would be a great addition to the Switch's library.

    • @Sunsetaren
      @Sunsetaren 6 лет назад +1

      onaretrotip 3:49 You can blame Nintendo's then Japanese President for the N64's stubborn hardware, You see.... He ordered the development team behind the console to intentionally make it hard to program for as a test of Talent. If you failed to accomplish your task to develop an N64 game then you had no business being in Nintendo's presence & thus were blacklisted from working Nintendo hardware again! Yeah, he along with Sega's then Japanese President hated amateurs. So yes, Nintendo fucked themselves up once they got to Earthbound 64! 5:00 Metroid 64 was worked on & eventually released but as Metroid Prime & yes, Metroid Prime was originally intended to be Metroid 64. The only reason why we got that game is because of everyone's favorite producer at Nintendo, *Shigeru Miyamoto!* You see, he decided that a new Metroid game should be made once he visited Retro Studios for that's where he discovered that Retro had just created a brand new shooter engine & he came up with the bright idea to use it for Metroid & told both Retro & Nintendo that this engine was what Metroid 64 needed all along! So what happened next was that Retro Studios decided to make "New Metroid" play in a similar manner to Rare's Jet Force Gemini but Nintendo shot down the idea for having a 3D Metroid game play as a 2nd Person Shooter was both nothing special & out of wack for Metroid. Due to the set deadline & demands made by Nintendo, 3 other GameCube games had to get cancelled just to pump out Metroid Prime! 1 of which is known as Raven Blade which was supposed to be an open world Fantasy RPG (Like how Nintendo wanted Body Harvest to be years eariler). Since you recently did Genesis or what you call Mega Drive for a cancelled games episode, My Request for your next is either Master System or GameCube!
      5:34 The reason why Echo Delta was cancelled was due to Nintendo loosing faith into the N64 & felt that if they had released the game then it would have sold poorly even if it was considered a cult classic. They felt that with the GameCube being released within a year meant the decline of older hardware & software and although they could have chosen to move it to the GameCube, they still weren't convinced that it would be worth the time & money to make, market & distribute. A real shame for this could have been a great game on any system since N64! The company that developed it, was later shut down & stripped of its assets overnight two years later by Nintendo & another Japanese company named Recruit after they saw how it was pointless keeping around to it being a leech to their profits.

    • @Sunsetaren
      @Sunsetaren 6 лет назад +2

      onaretrotip 6:49 He was most likely cancelled by Virgin Interactive rather than the developers & the only reason why I believe they would do that is probably due to declining N64 sales in the late 90's for 40 Winks was meant to be a cross platform game for both PS1 & N64 but the latter was cancelled due to declining sale ratings a year later. 9:21 Velvet Dark is no doubt a game that didn't get far in development & was scrapped because of the demise of the N64 & the Microsoft buyout of Rare! Sure Velvet could have been moved to the Classic Xbox but Microsoft didn't seem interested.

    If we ever get a N64 Classic Mini (which I think is very likely), they should at least include one now completed game, just like Star Fox 2. Or maybe upgrade Super Mario 64 to have a multiplayer-mode or something like that. And even if not, it would be really awesome to get a N64-Mini and rereleased (updated) N64-Controllers with the Rumble-Pak build-in. prototype? where. I've never ever heard a mention of prototype. just hearsay.
      SFIII wasnt super well received when first released, and at the time of this interview, Second Impact, the revision to the first version was being cranked out for october release.
      So if it was set for December, they would have pushed it back for Second Impact to be ported instead. but the DD was pushed back till 1999 anyway. And I just dont think a cartridge version would've worked out. so after the financial and critical failure of second impact, AND the DD. Capcom probably just didnt see the point in releasing or developing the port.
      There might've been talk of doing a cartridge version. but that is a big game with a high number of sprites and the basic N64 was not a 2D powerhouse and was very hard to 2D on period. I just dont think there was a real chance of it happening.
      I understand N64 faithful, dream about it, because the N64 had very little 2D fighter representation. But I feel like its a fallacy, empty hype.

      No it's not. It didn't aged well, the pacing is horrible and Majora's Mask is a far better game, But OoT gameplay is still very good.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Doshin the Giant going to be a 64 release, but was pushed to Gamecube for North America and EU. Kirby's Air Ride was also pushed to Gamecube, but was originally for N64. Funny how many were ported later to the cube.

    • @onaretrotip
      @onaretrotip  6 лет назад

      Well, Doshin The Giant was released for the 64DD, so I guess when that tanked the game only made it to the West on Gamecube. Kirby's Air Ride was indeed planned for the 64 first, but moved over to Gamecube. It seems that quite a few games were shifted to Gamecube after being initially developed (or at least planned) for the N64.

    Doom 64 was amazing.......wave race 64, and that turok one. I agree with you overall. LOVED THE N64 but it's life cycle really did not last long. PC quake, unreal tournament, half life had alot to do with it collecting dust in the end. The original Xbox brought me back to consoles. PS2 was not very strong for its first couple of years and personally if it was not for GTA 3, THE PS2 WOULD HAVE DIED ALOT SOONER. PS2 was one of the most over rated consoles in the history of video games.

    • @onaretrotip

      Yeah, the N64 is an odd one. Some great games, but not many decent games compared to other consoles of the 90s.

    The reason for GTA N64's cancellation is because it was purposed for the N64DD; not cartridge. Self-explanatory, the game was cancelled since its intended format was a failure.
    Nintendo was very lenient and welcoming to gory titles, for example Mortal Kombat, Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur day etc.

    • @onaretrotip
      @onaretrotip  6 лет назад

      Hmm, not sure that's correct. More likely it was due to the relationship between Nintendo and Rockstar suffering with the development/release of Body Harvest.

      Fire Emblem 64 eventually became Thracia 776 on the Super Famicom due to the unpopularity of the N64 in Japan and the Super Famicom remaining popular there after the Super Nintendo died in the west.
