Favorite early memories of Winchell's. 1970's locations in South Lake Tohoe and Southern California. Nothing like their glazed and chocolate glazed. Hanging out with friends, donuts and coffee.

Well, I was all prepared to talk about my favorites from Winchell's until I saw my old image of the one my family used to frequent at 3:28 in this video! I took that picture around 1989 of the one in the Hacienda Shopping Center! That whole strip mall was sadly rebuilt to a bland structure, but that 7-11 in the background is still there on Yucca and Foxworthy in San Jose! My brothers rode over there on weekends when they had Sunday papers to deliver and if I was up I'd ride over too! My favorites were their jelly filled - only raspberry but heavenly; cinnamon rolls and old fashioneds! Their hot chocolate was always molten hot because it came right out of the machine! When my dad took us fishing in the early morning he'd get "one dozen plain cake donuts" every time! Haha! Ironically the competitor mentioned - Dunkin only had one location in San Jose for many decades and I still don't think they've opened more than 2 additional since!

I was born in Los Angeles in 1961. There was Winchell’s at the corner of Florence and Paramount (I think? Is it still there? Is it another corner?) in Downey, right by our house. I thought that the maple bars were the greatest thing ever. My dad always made sure to get me an extra one.

A pity Winchell's Donuts left Illinois years ago, leaving us with the mediocre donuts Dunkin' was hawking, instead of the better variety Winchell's had.
Thank God we have Krispy Kreme. ☺️
