Until the late 1980s Florida building code did not require any drainage plans. My house was built on high ground and the entire neighborhood has drainage tunnels built underneath to siphon heavy rainwater. Before the new codes were enacted, builders built on low-lying areas with no drainage system. That's why Florida homes flood so easily. Most were built in the 40s through the 70s.

When giant icebergs break off they should find a way to have them towed into the Gulf Coast off Florida during the hurricane season.
Maybe this would cool the water temperatures enough to stop hurricanes from being fueled because of the warm waters in the Gulf. Sound crazy but just a thought.

And that's why there should be no building that close to the water. The residual damage from pollution will be unfathomable. With the current unending incompetent and inept expansion of rt 19 the county revenuers and developers are salivating to pave and destroy more sensitive wetlands and springs west of the highway. Commercial For Sale signs are already everywhere in spring fed marshes. Meanwhile there are 100's of thousands of existing vacant commercial properties all over the county and more specifically just east of the storm berm that is hwy 19. There should be a strict moratorium on building and zoning in these fragile coastal areas of citrus county. The speculators will scream. So what. After having pillaged the coffers (tax payers) for 8 years and counting, with no end in site, to do a horrible rebuild with horrendous design and inept contractors of the road to accommodate the rape of the Nature Coast. When did land speculation come with a guarantee? Sadly their greed will kill the manatees, fish and turn the rivers dead w red tides. Then the same killers will be screaming at the government (the rest of us tax payers again) to fix it after it's too late. If it's not already. This is the mentality of the invaders from the north. Self absorbed greedy parasites. Maybe this wil be a wakeup call. Start by NOT building that gas station in old homosassa blocks from the river. Totally unnecessary and ignorant.
