Blondie came from the punk/"New wave" movement in New York in the 70s into the 80s. The imaging of the 80s overtook the "rebellious grime" of traditional punk. Just so you know, she's been through some serious ups and downs over the years but she's still out there, banging away on tour again... In her 80s. That voice is so natural and unforced, it's *ethereal* (that's the term you were looking for) and it's just magical. She can be soft, floating and "ethereal" one minute, then powerful and punchy the next, holding amazing notes and tone. She's definitely "got it," not that you can really define what "it" is... And that's the point. 😊
This is the first song to hit number 1 without being on a bands album . It was on the American Gigolo soundtrack. Check out her reggae hit The tide is High. Also check out The hardest Part. This is the one that put her on the map
This song was produced in the summer of 79 but released January of 80. The lyrics were written from the perspective of the main character in the film, American Gigolo. The colour me is a a way describing a person by their style, mannerisms, tastes, practices or habits, like painting a picture of someone
Do you even understand what a Gigolo is? You laughably attribute style, mannerisms, tastes etc to describe what "colour me" means when the song is about a frigggen male prostitute. "Colour me" A prostitute. No matter if they're affable, well dressed, respectful, thoughtful, good taste...whatever..... He is a prostitute... like a painting, the picture WAS painted and it's one of a prostitute. Would you describe a female prostitute the same way, as some respectable classy girl?
Before Richard Gere was an officer, he was a gigolo in "The American Gigolo" (1980). "Call Me" does not appear on any studio album. You either need a greatest hits, the soundtrack or a live version.
In Blondie’s song Call Me, the phrase “Color me your color” suggests a desire for connection and identity with the person being addressed. “Color me” can be interpreted as an invitation to be defined, shaped, or influenced by the other person, indicating a willingness to be emotionally available or molded by their presence. It’s a metaphor for emotional openness, intimacy, and surrender to the dynamic between two people, particularly in a romantic or passionate sense. The line fits with the overall theme of the song, which is about longing, availability, and intensity in a relationship or attraction.
And/or…. "Colour me (something)" means the same as "call me (something)", typically, "colour me stupid" or "colour me gone". Green's Slang Dictionary has "color" (US) as "to see, present as", and the first citation is for an advertisement for a television series (I'm Dickens He's Fenster) in 1962 "Color her married". Personally, I always imagined she was kind of saying, “Color me pink? Forget that. This dude can color me any color he likes, as long as it’s him that’s coloring me.” “Color me pink” of course being a phase used to say, “I’m flattered.” It’s a playful version of “Staaaaahhhhhp, you’re making me blush.” Its playfulness and the color pink imply a certain innocence. By suggesting she be colored by his color, you could imply that she’s not embarrassed, or that she’s down for anything, or even they get closer to compare colors; much closer. Color me your color, baby = take me, I’m yours Color me your car = you’re leaving with me tonight Color me your color, darling = for real, I’m down for anything I know who you are = I know you want it Come up off your color chart = come and get it I know where you’re coming from = *cough cough* *wink wink* *hint hint* _(And that flows into the Call Me chorus, essentially saying that you can have me any time, any where, I’m down.)_ Of course, there are a million ways to interpret it. That just how I always contextualized it in my own head, admittedly mostly absent-mindedly until now, as I’m forced to actually consider it… in order to leave a hopefully-intelligible RUclips comment. 😅
BLONDIE was in heavy rotation EVERYWHERE, back in the day! DEBBIE HARRY turned 79 this year (born July 1, 1945) - and looks absolutely FABULOUS in Gucci's Nan Goldin Campaign!
The colour me part is because it's taken from the film American Gigolo. Debbie saw it before it was released to get some inspiration. The film uses subtle colours hence the lyric. The call me line is because the film is about a male escort who says "call me" throughout the film.
BLONDIE was so cutting edge at the time. Their style of music was punk/new wave/disco/pop/raggae/funk and used early hip hop. You could not put them in a box and label them. Debbie Harry was gorgeous and was worked for Hugh Hefner as a Playboy Bunny. Colour Me is just another way of saying "CALL ME" - Colour me a fool for example. Check out the song. - "Atomic", "The Tide is High"
Saw them in Madison Square Garden in spring of '82. Debbie Harry was gorgeous, but she didn't get her acclaim due to her looks, she had pipes! She belted out these songs live, on pitch.
As someone who grew up before cellphones it was only hard to get ahold of someone on a phone when they were on the phone already because there was no call-waiting in the late 70’s early 80’s.
I think you will love Sunday Girl. Also Tide is High, Atomic, Maria, One Or Another, Hanging On the Telephone ( super short, but awesome). And more that I’m forgetting right now.
I remember when this came out I loved it. It’s from the film American Gigolo about a male escort. I think when she sings at the beginning verse about colours , it’s a metaphor for I can be anything you want, I can be this for you, or that for you. You name it. Because it’s the perspective of a s*x worker. “ Anytime, any place, anywhere, any way, any day” That’s my theory anyway, I might be saying a load of shite!”
I’d advise taking the time to listen to the “original long version” of this song; it’s worth every second, I promise! And yes, Blondie was a punk rock band, playing in this club in NYC called CBGB’s before they hit it big.
You should really look into Debbie's story a bit. It's quite the story and she's a true path maker for women in music. I'd be here for any reaction to her. Here or in VS the world watching her story. ❤😊
In British English, the phrase "colour me....." simply means to call me something. For example, "I didn't know the state capital of Vermond. Colour me stupid", or "I have to leave now. Colour me gone."
Well now, I'm British and used to teach a bit of English many years ago, but I have never in my life heard of that. I've heard 'Call me stupid but......' many times but never 'Colour me....'. As with many things here in the UK it could easily be a regional variation or something, who knows.
What you really need to do is watch the first opening to the film American gigolo which the song is from with Richard Gere driving down the freeway in LA and a black Mercedes convertible you get an idea how much the song fits the movie if you watch that
She was big time hanging and playing in the Punk - Rock club CBGBs in the 70s Lots of punk bands played there!!!“Hanging on the Telephone “ I think this is more punk!!!!❤😂
Debbie is a awesome person. The next one up The Tide is High is another great song. I was in love with her when I was in elementary school. Along with every other kid lol
To think we almost never had a band named Blondie. When Debbie Harry was a server in NY. Late one night after work, she accepted a ride from a stranger. Once in she realized how much danger she was in. She barely escaped. The stranger was none other than Ted Bundy.
This was written to be the Theme Song to "American Gigolo" (1980), hence "call me, anytime day or night, roll me in designer sheets...".. You'll get it!!
The movie , "American Gigolo " with the great Richard Gere intro song. She was talking about the gigolo guy that Richard Gere plays in the movie to color, cover , give her everything , if you know what I mean ?

Call me is the first Blondie song I heard and it was on a 45 vinyl back when I was 8ish years old. My dad had a HUGE crush on Blondie along with Nena (99 Red Balloons).
I have the super long version of this on my phone, which is 8:02 minutes. It's awesome, and I wish you had reacted to that one. You would have loved it man. 👍
“Atomic”is my favorite. This was a song from the movie American Gigolo. This was composed and produced by Giorgio Moroder ( Scarface, etc.) he basically pioneered Synth music.Brian Eno heard Donna Summer/ Moroders song “I feel love” and told David Bowie. “I just heard the future.”
Thank you for reviewing this one! First time I heard this song was when Richard Gere was driving a BMW or Mercedes convertible in the American Gigolo movie.
The song is about the life of being a high end prostitute. "Color me your color baby, color me your car" etc. Basically saying I'll be anything you want me to be tonight, a party? a bar? your room? your car? She goes on talking about catching feelings but hiding her emotions.
Several songs off top of my head, when you get a chance… Early Rolling Stones…Empty heart,Mona,Down the road apiece Shadows of knight…Gloria Rascals ..in the midnight hour..
I still remember when I was a treenager and heard her first album at the place of a friend for the first time. Blondie got me instantly. I still thin that her first album is her best. I like the rawness of "X offender" and "rip her to shreads"
"Colour me....." Is a a turn of phrase that has the utterer attributing some state of being to themselves. Example, "Colour me shocked that x,y,z happened".
Yet again another song reaction to a song I played in a marching band show. This was a song for our show my sophomore year and the show was called The Queen of Rock. There was Blondie, Pat Benatar, Paramore, Joan Jett, and I think one other. Not my personal favorite show, but it's in second place to my freshman year show.
Rapture is the first song with a Rap element to hit number 1. Rappers Delight was probably the first popular rap song. The Message, by Grandmaster Flash and the Fab Five was released a few years later by Sugar Hill Records. Grandmaster Flash did appear in the Rapture video, and was called out. He may have been working with Debby Harry to help her learn to rap. I think this is late 1970s, probably 1978 or 1979. Blondie started out as Punk Rock, they did everything. They even covered a Reggae song called, "The Tide is High." I actually like "Atomic". Debby Harry did release a solo album covering Blondie's hits in the 1980s or 1990s, called "Once More Into The Bleach"

One of the best late 70’s to early 80’s groups. We had the police, the cars and Blondie. Good times!
Pop, Punk, Reggae, Early Rap, this group did it all. Very innovative and influential.
I would say generally though, it was considered New Wave at the time.

Debbie Harry exudes classic beauty and style whilst the band absolutely slaps! And colour me means gimme that cash. The colour of money..
Yes, especially for punk rock, Debbie is a class act!👍
This was the theme from American Gigolo. That should explain the song!
LOVE Blondie
Man they were HUGE in the late 70’s / early 80’s
Fun thing about Blondie is that each of their hits sound like they are in different genres.
They were very innovative and heavily influenced pop groups in the 80's.

They cut the song short.. it continues for awhile after that. You should listen to the full song.
He needs to be more discerning when picking a version. He also needs to start using wikipedia for getting band info.
People always seem to react to this version and i don’t get why this version even exists 😂 it cuts out some of the best parts of the song 😂
