what a wicked sense of humor, I love it! LMFAO. We love ya, Tom. Keep up the priceless work. The fans know God given talent! Fuck the critics and haters!! Tom Waits for life! Who's with me? :-)
Depending on the key, the riff starts on the dominant chord or the 5th, so if it's in D, the notes are: A, C#, E, slide up to B, down to A. If in the key of E, then it's: B, D#, F#, slide up to C#, down to B.
I like this version more than the album version, the upright bass and the lack of percussion make it more emotional. Tom Waits is a wonderful musician.
So amazing. So beautiful. And he manufactured this incredible voice that is so painful, he can't even tour very much. Talk about pushing the boundaries! :P
The Best of Tom's Song is the way of his life...I'm wondering and so I think. Somebody said his voice is beautiful, I think so too. 'cause He don't care about his voice & his face & wearing...are these tactics of his Musical Art ?
@Twilight37 Agreed 100%. It takes more than a pleasant voice to make a great singer. What Waits and Dylan lack in vocal range, they make up for it with their unique lyrics, their unconventional voices, and their genuine, incredible phrasing. That's why "prettier" covers of their songs usually fall short - they can't touch this kind of stuff.
Its actually two different riffs. Drove me nuts trying to figure out what was wrong. In E, the first time it is played it is B, D#, F#, C#, B then, the second time is B, C#, E, C#, B obviously theres some more embellishment to it than that, but the point is the riff changes the second time.
This clip is made up of two separate versions. In the second part he plays guitar with a capo on at the 4th fret. Also the first verse is missed out. Would be really great if it was the whole song!
Does anyone know where I can find the rest of this Storytellers gig? Only got this and Ol' 55 so far. It was on tv about 3 years ago and never again since. Going to see him in Edinburgh in July, literally the best news ever.
Hmm, love the instrumentation but it seems he kinda jumbled the lyrics a bit. Love Tom. Wishing I can see him in concert at least once more before I die!
Tom Waits is one of the most important artists of all time. Even if most people don't know who he is. He is beyond brilliant!

Tom Waits has just been named a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, class of 2011.
Congratulations, and well done, sir!
Tom is 1of the most talented and great singer of all times!fod bless you Tom and thank you,many many years to come!!!!!!
I love his music since I heard him the very first time. And I'm happy to have met him life in L.A.
That's awesome. Maybe the only celebrity I'd still nerd-out on, and get in their space. Love Tom.

I would give anything to see Tom perform live.
To me Tom Waits is the greatest of them all
I like this version. If there's anyone who should release multiple versions of their songs, it's Tom. Also, killer beard on the bassist!
Great version of this wonderful song!
Respect!!!
Tom Waits = legend
Powerful and bloody wonderful . . . thanks Tom ^_^

Ortwin indeed, it sounds more Tom Waits-ish!
This is the best version of this song I have ever heard.
Really?
He doesn't need to be in any hall of fame as his songs ARE the fuckin' hall of fame!
So amazing. So beautiful. And he manufactured this incredible voice that is so painful, he can't even tour very much. Talk about pushing the boundaries! :P
He is lyrically brilliant tbh ...
it looks like the bass players rockin out to something else with his head movement towards the end. amazing version of a great song.

Genius.

Recorded April 1, 1999 at a VH1 rented studio, Los Angeles.
Great artist!!!!
No-one else could have sang this as beautifully as Tom Waits did.
Rod Stewart should be shot for even having the gaul to try
it's gall, not gaul.
All I Can say are these four words:
GOD BLESS TOM WAITS.
very very good sharin' !
Wenn es einen Gott gibt dann ist es Tom Waits!!!
brilliant !
Unfortunatelly I've got only this version...
Great!
Great stuff
This is a Tom Waits song!!! Mr.Stewart only covered it....

Yes my friend!
I just wonder so much why this wasn't released commercially (apart from the initial airing).
1:35 My favourite part.
@lhart99 Here here...hail to the king!!
GENUIS
Tom Waits wrote this song. FYI
FYI- we all know!

@cozmovaldimar
we all feel the same, my friend
The first part of the song is missing - do you have the rest of it? I love this version, thanks.
Shortened. Why is that?
Where can I get a suit like that? Lived in, no pressing necessary.
intencionado
is that seasick steve on that bass?? lol
Ha!
Nope, its the great Larry "The Mole" Taylor (of Canned Heat fame)
Hmm, love the instrumentation but it seems he kinda jumbled the lyrics a bit. Love Tom. Wishing I can see him in concert at least once more before I die!
@Sabwaits harsh,if true
you just dont get it.
Its not about the money.
What’s that guitar he’s playing? Nice sound
Damien Ogorodov that's a Guild if I'm not mistaken. No idea about the specific model.
Here is the complete version: ruclips.net/video/uPUexxIpWbE/видео.html you are welcome
@Sabwaits
Who is the guitarist player the backing fills
steveratiug Marc Ribot composed the guitar parts, but I don't think that's him in this video.
Tom Hiddleston sent me here
@Sabwaits u mean murdered it
cover?? this is the original...
Wth was that
He sounds awful! Granted he's a great writer and producer, but the mix of Springsteen, Cocker and Satchmo just doesn't work.
Three...two...one...
