    For someone who recently battled an infestation, it was small/mild, nothing crazy! But here are my tips and please huge it to your full advantage no matter how big or small your infestation is.
    1: Buy mattress, pillow, and box spring covers! Specially made for bed bugs because it has a material (similar to plastic and nylon) which bed bugs have a hard time crawling on. Also, once the covers are on, they can’t come out and they can’t go in! Bed bugs are known for hiding inside of your mattress and mainly your box spring. If you’re an aggressive sleeper or sleep with someone, buy two!
    2: Buy bed bug interceptors, put them on the legs of your bed frame, so when they try to climb up to your bed to bite you, they’ll get trapped! You can also put this on the legs of your furniture or on other bed frames in your home for PROTECTION.
    3: Buy DE or CimeXa powder and sprinkle a little of it inside of the bed bug interceptors. These powders will legitimately kill all stages of bed bugs within a 24 hour period, including every other insect as well! You can also use these powders in corners, holes, cracks, and etc… but use a face mask with gloves and do not over use it. These powders destroy insects!!!
    4: Keep your bed away from the wall! Make sure your sheets aren’t hanging off of the bed, or you don’t have a charger or anything that the bed bugs can climb onto without them using the legs of your bed frame. If you wake up and find your pillow or blanket on the floor, leave it there! Dont pick it up and use it to go back to sleep.
    5: Buy ortho bed bug spray or crossfire! It kills all stages of bed bugs on contact! And it acts similar to a repellent. According to ortho and crossfire themselves, it kills bed bugs even after it dries, by leaving traces of poison that sticks to their legs. So spray these in areas where there’s bed bug activity or places where they’d most likely hide. Cracks, holes, etc… remember that they hide CLOSE TO YOU! Rubbing alcohol is great too! But it doesn’t leave behind insect poison.

    Bed bugs do stay on people. I work at a healthcare organization. Any patients that have bedbugs must shower here early in the morning before their appointments in the clinic. The CNAs are always talking about bedbugs falling off people. We have also had people with bedbugs on them. Just crawling around on their sweater.
    Be very careful who you hug.

    It’s been 7 yrs that we had bedbugs my son stayed over a friends and brought them home. We noticed because my daughters room next to my sons room and she was getting bit. Their beds are on opposite of a wall. It took us 6 months to get rid of them we tried EVERYTHING!!! I bought everything Amazon had to offer for it. We lived out of storage bins cleaned everyday!! We ended up hiring a exterminator and within 2 weeks they were gone!!! Wish I had done that first. Til this day my life hasn’t been the same it took a real mental toll on us. I do weekly bed checks and till this day we use all white bed covers. I also have all mattresses and pillows in Cases with zippers. I’m traumatized still and it’s been 7 years.

    Thanks for addressing this topic, Dr. Dray. I brought home bedbugs once years ago after a trip to NYC, and it took months to completely get rid of them, even with professional extermination. It really was a nightmare. I have very sensitive skin and the bites were insufferably itchy. I also experienced disrupted sleep due to an intense psychological aversion - just the idea of laying down to sleep when I knew these little @#&^* were gonna come out and feed on me in the night? 1000x yuck. Very disturbing. My sympathies to anyone going through this.

      Anything with metal legs is good to use bc they can't climb up the metal easily. A desk or table works well. And be sure to keep your suitcase closed and not leaning on the wall. I've read putting your suitcase in a large white plastic bag and sealing it helps keep them from hitching a ride home with you too. I have been bitten in hotels a few times, but I react pretty severely to them. Used to travel for work but thankfully no longer do that. I hate those things.

    Almost 15 years ago picked up bedbugs from a nice, modern hotel in Paris, gave them a free ride to New York. I didn't hire an exterminator, but my methods were only feasible bec i was unemployed at the time (so had time on my hands). The welts were the MOST horrible, hellishly itchy ones i've ever gotten from an insect-each one would turn into a large blister, and i had to wear icebags taped to them just to numb the itching and sleep at night.
    Tips that worked for me:
    -Made a "moat" of double-sided tape all around the edge of my bed, basically sleeping *inside* a protective boundary of it. (Luckily it was summer, i could sleep without extra duvets and sheets.) I would find bedbugs stuck to the tape upon awaking;
    -As another comment said: Diatomaceous earth! Just the regular kind (there's one specifically for aquariums that you DON'T want). Sprinkle that around your bed posts, near any crevices of furniture, anywhere you think a bedbug might pass. Be careful if you or someone with you had asthma - it's basically chalk dust, can be irritating to breathe, though not poisonous. It cuts into the bedbugs' exoskeleton, which suffocates them. So it's a non-chemical strategy, they won't become immune to it.
    - laundry laundry laundry. Clean laundry i kept in plastic garbage bags and hung off the floor wherever i could.
    Finally stopped noticing any bites. Continued using the methods for about 3 weeks at least.
    (Another thing to note: Bedbugs are so tiny but crawl SOOO fast relative to size. So if you think you're gonna "catch" them in the act once you flip on the lights, well don't count on it- they'll be halfway across the bed in a second.)

    You can steam or iron your mattress, carpet and furniture before calling the exterminator and save some money, as well as exposure to chemicals. We treated a flea infestation at a rental we moved into with this method, it kills the eggs as well as the bugs.

    I moved into a new apt in July and 3 weeks later I saw bites. That night I woke up and saw them. I don't know if they were already here or if I got them from the moving truck. It took 2 exterminatations over a 6-week period. HUGE PITA. I couldn't sleep much. I'd wake up and see them on the bed. I was killing 2-5 a night, mostly babies, a few adults. It's been 6 1/2 weeks since the 2nd extermination. I still check every time I wake up and every morning. I had to keep all my clothes and linens in garbage bags for 7 weeks. I sympathize with anyone who has dealt with them.

I saw this strange insect walking on the bed, and flicked it off without too much thought - the lights were still on and I'd not even gone to bed as yet. Bed bugs absolutely can be transmitted with people. My daughter invited some local kids to play in the basketball court in her apartment complex. They stored their backpacks in her apartment while they played. Shortly thereafter the welts started to appear. She’d be bit, then nothing for 2 weeks, then bites again. We had an exterminator come out TWICE to inspect her bed and they saw nothing. After a couple of months, I told her to just buy a new bed. She never had welts again.

    I had bedbugs in 2012 and I think we had a pretty bad case, because the ones in my room would often come out as early as 10pm if I was in bed early enough. I killed so many, idk if I have an allergy or not because I *would* feel them, and then pull my covers back and find one before it scurried away. There were so many times I would see them but it would be too late as they'd scurried back to their hangout. Something else to note about bedbug bites is that the welts are often not perfectly round. Most of mine were in weird shapes. I used to work at Kohls and I found one in my sock once! So annoying. Our landlord was terrible and tried several rounds of "bomb" trapping to get rid of them but they didn't work. It took contacting the city health inspector for the landlord to bring in someone from Orkin, and they even had to come 3 times. It was intense.

I’ve also made it a habit to wash my bedding at least once per week on the steam/anti-allergen cycle and I try to vacuum at least twice a week. At least with dust mites they’re so small we can’t see them. Bed bugs would absolutely end me. So much sympathy for people struggling to manage their bed bug levels.

    I I found they will hide in seams of clothes. I recommend the light colored clothing and furniture to make them more visible. I also recommend using a good vacuum with a good hose to get in crevices. Since you invade the crevices, you remove whole nests, including eggs. Treat crevices with essential oils to kill what was not removed. Repeat until you see less and less bedbugs. Whenever you see no more (and you WILL SEE MORE IF YOU FAILED TO REMOVE NESTS/COTENTS) continue cleaning every week--even if you have no more occasions. It does and has worked for me. Without costly removal of furnishings oof clothes. Also nobody has to know you defeated them.

They were in the baseboards, the wallpaper, the carpet, the furniture, mattress, picture frames and she had to throw out everything and the treatment took months. I had to tell my mom she could not go to her friends house or allow her to visit because her clothes could harbor the bugs. It was a nightmare!

    Thank you so much for this video! It was very helpful! I noticed bites on me but not my husband. I thought maybe it was a spider we live in a garden apartment. Sure enough last night I was looking on my sheets because I was fixing them and I saw one walking across my sheet my husband saw it too. He thought I was crazy and I know this sounds crazy but I grabbed and squeezed it and blood came out most likely mine!! I couldn't sleep 😢 turns out the people above us have them and just told the landlord. The whole building has to be exterminated. And the worst of it is they've had them for a long time!! And I just started getting bit in the summer I didn't know. Again Dr. Dray thank you for this video

    I thought, I might have them a couple weeks ago. Had several bites on my right heel and a rash right over that for 2 days. The bites just kept on itching for well over a week. I almost scratched myself bloody, because the itching would be so intense during the nights.
    Never had mosquito bites that bad, but that's what it must have been.
    Or at least I didn't have any new bites in almost 3 weeks. So grateful.

    It’s a nightmare . I had to get rid of the mattress and had to call an exterminator. Whatever you do never squash a bed bug. They carry eggs and when you squash one they break all open and simply multiply. Get rid of things I’d you can and yes get an exterminator. God it’s a bloody nightmare and they spread very easily.

  • @The.Hawaiian.Kingdom
    @The.Hawaiian.Kingdom 11 месяцев назад +8

    My mother in law worked at a casino and brought them home with her. They spread so fast and it literally driving us all insane. They’re so hard to get rid of once you have an infestation. There was a woman who self-terminated or UN-liffed herself because she couldn’t get rid of them even after moving, that’s how bad it gets, it’s so itchy.
    The only way to get rid of them is to get an exterminator who uses heat pumps that pumps super hot air into you home. If an exterminator says he can get rid of them by spraying, he’s lying, and trying to rip you off, bed bugs are immune to all of the sprays exterminators use. Diatomaceous earth can also help but you’re not likely to get rid of them all with that method and a new infestation could start.

I put porous or textile items in there to "bake", like books or even including clothing before I run through the regular wash. Non-porous items (like a ceramic dish or metal candlestick) I simply inspect and clean with alcohol. I couldn’t watch..I read the comments. I had them 3 years ago, took about 2 weeks of waking up with new bites that burned and itched like crazy and a dermatologist visit then exterminator visit to figure out the problem. I caught it early before a major infestation and got rid of them. I am so thankful for my sensitive skin and reactions. My husband didn’t get bit and if he did, he did not react. I even got bit on my face. I was traumatized to the point now that I don’t want to stay in hotels. I don’t thrift shop. I fuss at my son for sitting his backpack on the floor at school. If anyone travels they have to unpack outside into a garbage bag and all items go straight to washer!!! I believe mine came from a clients house because I distinctly remember a burning stinging sensation on my elbow (I had on long sleeves) and the intense itch and welting of my skin! I thought a spider bit me but it was a bed bug and I guess it hid in my jacket and came home with me. Now I know why they say don’t sit on your bed with outside clothes on…

    I stayed in a hotel and no signs of insects in room. Next morning I saw red blood type dots on sheet near my feet. I didn’t have a wound or sting. Strange but didn’t think anything of it. The following night I woke up because I felt something crawling over my face! I removed and squished it. Turned on the light and saw reddish orange squish of insect on my fingers. I figured these must be bedbugs. I took pictures. Fortunately, I was so tired I slept but with lights on. Next morning I took pictures to hotel manager and they moved me right away to a suite and I got to stay free until the end of stay. I checked the suite with a flashlight in the mattress crevices but it was all ok. My suitcase was not on the floor and I made sure it was closed to avoid bringing them home. My shoes were totally cleaned in the garage to avoid contamination in my home. Of course all my clothes were washed that I had on my trip.

    I live in Barcelona and this city has a huge problem with bed bugs infestation. Most people I know had them at least once- including me 😢.
    They don't work on schedule lol like you said between 2-5am. They actually detect the level of carbon-dioxide that people exhale when they are in the REM phase of sleep (and for most people it's between 2-5). Another way to detect them is to exhale strongly into your mattress, a pillow, and you'll see them coming out (even during the day). Gross ugh...
    Washing or drying on the 90° for at least 30 minutes will kill them and for beds you can use steamer. Diatomaceous earth is good mechanical killer as it scratches their shields and literally dehydrates them to death. Another option is buying a mattress envelopes and enclose them until they suffocate to death. Usually, and depending on how big the infestation is, you'll need to combine ALL of the methods above along with the proffesonal exterminators!
    (Everything I said above is not just my personal experience and of many people around me, but also my brother is a vet that actually worked in government bodies for sanitary inspection and pest control)
