    As a 60+ woman I have become increaingly respectful of my grandmothers routine. She always shmeared oil into her cuticles at night as well as used vasoline on her body after bathing. She lived to 102 and, as a very fair skinned person, had gorgeous skin until her passing. I have also noted that the dry patches on my body are significantly reduced when using vasoline at night. It is heartening to hear that science concurs with tradition

    It's not new to me. As black woman who grew up in the south, Vaseline was THE go to for your skin. It was cheap and it worked. I'm 55, my skin looks great. I've used Vaseline since I was child...face, legs, heels, elbows. It traps the moisture. It's so common among black folks that the company hired the actress Viola Davis as its spokesperson! lol

    This method really helped me when I had very bad hand eczema while working in healthcare during Covid. Every time I had to use hand sanitizer, it was horribly painful. The dermatologist kept prescribing me steroids, and it would make it go away for a little while always to come back. Finally, I found one of the research articles online. It took about two weeks to fix but it definitely has not come back not an easy process, but brought me so much relief as I had been struggling with this for several months.

      I have added a hard water filter to my shower, which made a big difference to my hair and scalp.
      The biggest difference for my skin overall was a phytoceramide supplement (wheat based).

    • @KittenBowl1
      @KittenBowl1 9 месяцев назад

      I’ve used filters and definitely reduces irritation for those who have extreme dry sensitive skin. I’ve also used vitamin C shower where it release vitamin C and this I found it be more helpful as it neutralizes chlorine and for someone with eczema like myself and very dry skin I found this to be very helpful not to get irritated skin in winter time more than filter kind which tends to be expensive. I love steamer for face though. And we can’t forget humidifier for our skin in dry winter.

    Funnily enough, it was Dr Dray who also suggested a much-less aggressive variation hereof: every time after I shower, I get out of the shower wet, slather on Cerave (which contains petrolatum), and let it dry. I get an incredible amount of compliments how supple and smooth my skin always feels!

    • @pearlspetals5542

      @@diannematthews7409 I’m a senior staff advisor at a university hospital, and I discussed this technique with a colleague - a dermatologist. He had never heard of this method (but in his defence, Cerave was introduced here fairly recently), but after trying, he’s a convert! I’ve suggested it to a number of people with various barrier issues and it works every time! (Especially if you also avoid fabric softeners). Furthermore, it saves a lot of time and laundry: all you need is an old t-shirt to wrap around your hair. I know it sounds odd but for some reason, the combination of water and Cerave dries within minutes: in fact I brush my teeth, and by the time I’m done, I’m dry.

    As a 59 year old postmenopausal female, I sleep in silk and on a silk pillowcase specifically because silk doesn't absorb what I've applied to my skin the way that cotton does. It acts more like cling wrap, but is comfortable to sleep in. One of the greatest benefits reaped so far is wrapping my smeared neck in a silk sleep mask. WOW! Unfortunately, silk is terribly expensive when compared to cotton. Thumbs up, Dr. Dray!

    I'm 30yo and I've lived with multiple types of eczema my whole life and this is a technique I started using as a child. I don't do the bathes as much as, now I just stand and rotate under the shower for an extra song or two (it helps if your listening to music ;) ). I do this at least once a week in the evening and maybe again if I'm WFH or having a lazy weekend. I layer plain unscented petroleum jelly over my moisture (la roche posay eczema cream). I have other Rx ointments from my derm but try to avoid using on the same days, especially in the summer. Hopefully this helps someone!

Coconut oil is less greasy and I can use all day, since I don't wear makeup any longer unless I go somewhere. Both are good, I have also used Castor Oil. Also good. I get hot flashes in pajamas so I don't wear them. My face has one very dry spot and almost a pigment loss. Does not itch, but looks bad. I find myself still putting petroleum jelly on it during the day. It is like it my outer skin is trying to grow back almost like a scab. It is SO weird. My hands seem to grow these dry spots on them almost like warts. I smooth them off and I'm good. I am now letting them produce until I can get to a point to show a doctor to find out why they keep coming back and go that route. 67 in Texas.

    I’ve have hand eczema for 2decades has never gone away. Got numerous different medications prescribed over the years nothing really worked. I’ll be definitely trying this tonight with 100% petroleum. Cotton gloves irritates my skin might be because of detergents left on the fabric. I would wrap all the eczema flare on my hands with cotton pads and dressing and see if it’ll make any better. Thank you Dr. Dray.

    After years of struggling with acne and now damage-induced wrinkles, I finally found that my skin is starting to glow a little and the texture has calmed down. Can't wait for the blemishes to be gone and to one day go out without concealer. Your advice has been nothing but magic to me.

      Similar story here. What are you using on your face? I'm still searching for what works. Thanks.

    • @KalisBunny
      @KalisBunny 9 месяцев назад +2

      Absolutely. These are her recommendations from an older video, but I still like the products very much because my skin is both dry and it breaks out. So for washing I use the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser* and then I immediately go on with Deep Moisture hypoallergenic body lotion from Neutrogena** after the face dries almost completely. I live in a cold and dry climate so that my skin gets red and dry even if I wash every day in the winter, so I honestly wash my face every 48 hours or so until the skin calms down because I'm trying to introduce Differin gel as a retinol treatment every other day and there is also a video on how to apply that (you have to first put the lotion and even Aquaphor/vaseline on sensitive areas of the face) but I still get some redness around the eye area so I might switch out to pure vaseline and try that agin. In Europe you have to get a prescription for Differin but it's over-the-counter in some other countries. Hope this helps, check out her older videos for more detail.

      If you are acne prone you shouldn’t be following the advice specifically for dry skin people. In dermatology vaseline shouldn’t be used on people with acne prone and oily skin, it’s mostly likely going to worsen your condition. Cetaphil is for dry sensitive skin people and not for acne prone oily skinned people.

    • @KittenBowl1
      @KittenBowl1 9 месяцев назад +1

      Btw, if you want blemish to be gone you should really avoid any petroleum based products including mineral oil and petrolatum (vaseline). It would clog pores. Instead you should use products that contain light oils or even oil free in summer especially. Light oils are jojoba oil, grape seed oil, evening primrose oil etc. Exception of jojoba, other oils are rich in linoleic and linolenic fatty acid that will give you a very light feeling on skin. And avoid mineral oil, vaseline, olive oil, squalene oil and coconut oil as these will clog your pores. These oils are great for dry skin people. You need to use different products for acne prone skin.

    I repaired my damaged skin barrier, thank goodness. For years, when I'd shower in the Winter, my skin not only itched, it burned. ....this went on for hours. It was so uncomfortable. We got a shower filter. That helped. Also,switched to Bioderma Atoderm cleansing oil. That helped so much ! I had tried all sorts of soaps & shower gels but nothing had helped. Bioderma Atoderm lotion is fantastic for itchy skin.

    If you can’t do a full body job with the soak and smear method, do like half and half. Half your body one night, half another, and just put regular lotion on the body part you aren’t doing with Vaseline that night

    I used your advice about a cool mist humidifier, which helps. This winter season I'm using Cerave Body cream on my upper body and Cerave Healing ointment on my legs. With the retinol and glycolic acid I use on my face; my face (mostly my forehead)) became so itchy that I couldn't stop scratching. So I stopped that routine on my face for now and am using Good Molecules B5 serum followed by Avene XeraCera AD. So for 2 nights and days it lessen the itch. I will continue this on my face until the itch completely stops.

    My mom did this to me as a kid. I have eczema, but I can deal with it on my body better than my hands and feet. I have the kind with the little tapioca bead blisters and it itches and hurts so bad! Well, my mom would “smear” my hands and feet and cover them up in white cotton socks before bed (yes, socks on my hands lol) I still do it myself as an adult and it helps so much. Thanks Dr. Dray for your dedication to this channel!!

    A Norwegian dermatologist professor recommended this method to my parents back in the early 90’ for my child atopic eczema. It was a little known method in Norway back then but my parents were desperate because of my severe eczema. He recommended to use cotton tube bandage on my arms, hands, legs and feet over the ointment at night. That way I could get a good night sleep. My skin today is for the most part healthy, but sometimes in the winter season I might get a flare up with small patches. I will use this method, but now with waterproof bandage in different sizes over the area to trap the moisture in. I find this method to healing my skin quicker too. This way I don’t need to use much cortisol ointment on my skin. And I will maintain my skin with urea cream afterwards. Recommended a cream called Canoderma 5% from ACO.

    I remember when you first said to apply moisturizer on wet skin. I now shower and then apply lotion wet and it works amazingly. I do what you just described with my feet once s week but with shea butter lotion. Soak, smear and then insulate. Cosmetologist have recommended this for hands with warm lotion after soaking and cotton manicure gloves for decades so it makes sense.

I will lower the temp of water and shorter and take out the body wash stuff. I never had a really dry skin but I always wanted my body to feel smoother and softer. It was always a struggle for me because I couldn’t tolerate any lotions on my skin. I just hated this feeling. I tried so many “light” moisturizers but still couldn’t establish a routine I can enjoy until I met my husband. He was using baby oil (it comes in oily gel consistency). I couldn’t understand how he could tolerate this stuff on his body . It is very thick. He said “you don’t do it right. You should apply right after showing while your skin is still damp”. It was a game changer… this oil starts “melting” on your wet skin when you apply it. After I use towel to absorb extra. It doesn’t feel heavy, it even doesn’t feel that I have something on my skin. Just feels nice. Now the whole process makes even more sense for me after your explanations
