  • When he realized his wife had to choose between buying family meals and buying her monthly "supplies," Arunachalam Muruganantham vowed to help her solve the problem of the sanitary pad. His research got very very personal -- and led him to a powerful business model. (Filmed in Bangalore as part of the TED Global Talent Search.)

"Necessity is mother of all invention" Here scarcity of money created a "necessity" to innovate.
Mr Arunachalam is his Perseverance and Passion paid off. Even at the cost of his wife leaving him and his mother ridiculing him for his mission. He continued even when his villagers branded him mad man instead of pad man in initial years.
Most of us would have given up when he continued and continued with a mission. A mission to serve the society. Innovation rarely happens in university It happens in common man every day lives.

To all who gave negative response or dislike...
    1. Either you didnt have patience to listen what he told for first few mins, or,
    2. You forgot that invention is not valued by language
What he is telling in first few mins is, he is totally from rural area and doesnt know english at all. He somehow manages to speak, since he is on a common forum. But he thinks the educated people who watch this, would understand his english!!!
Now I dont know whether disliked people are educated or not?

Not that accents and pronunciation features are not interesting enough, but the speaker's project of open-sourcing sanitary pads' production and universalization of its use strikes me as a much more appropriate matter to populate the discussion section.

    • @spiritual_earthly_insights

Philipe Mota I agree, I wonder why people aren't talking about his ability to not chase money. Respect to him for his insane drive to chase a dream, based on a very simple need, that made him so successful. And his ability to stay true to his cause of keeping the cost low. There is an article I read that is now trying to vilify him, I can't believe such people who are manipulating facts to twist the truth.
Anyways his integrity in everything he does is very self evident and I hope he will keep on doing his good work across India.

It will work out. That's the beauty of living in India - you could live with $100-$1000 with the same lifestyle. Yet both will not have very different lives. I lived in bangalore for a few years and I had monthly expenses (excluding large purchases) varying from $100 a month to $1000 without any difference - all that changed was where I spent the money. Now, living in the US, I realize why people desire money - everything here is expensive and there are no alternatives.
