A friggin 2.5rs!??!?? Awesome!!! All the people saying the teardown isnt so bad havent had to tear down anything rusty, im so friggin pumped for you, always wondered why noone builds the ej22s, hope you're doin good! Been a minute since i saw your vids, awesome to see you still kickin butt!!!
Although I’m not usually a fan of darker wheels, the wheel choice was absolutely perfect for the rx7. Love how that build came out, and I can’t wait to see how the rs does too!
Teardowns are fun to me! Thanks for the heads up on that rust reformer, my roof is cooked in the same area but I have not addressed it yet. Gonna pick me up a bottle for sure!
Love watching subaru content after breaking my subaru haha. But for the pitting, grab reinforced fiberglass, worked great for a toyota pickup a buddy and I are restoring
Buy two good das one mini and one for finishing I recommend Hutchins. Also do bottom first dirtiest to cleanest work. And instead of sanding you can also find aircraft paint stripper just get the one that they didn’t remove the chemicals that made it work feel like it’ll save you a ton of time on this one
Dude im so happy youre doing this build. Amd honestly even more happy that its a giant turd just like mine! Excited to see how you deal with the crust cuz ill bet mine is worse
I have a 2.5RS as well (albeit, WAY cleaner than this one) and have been contemplating on whether I should keep it or not. Seeing as you've owned them all at this point, would you rather dump the money into resto-modding an STI swapped 2.5RS, buying a clean GD STI, or just modifying a VB WRX (my daily). I test drove a clean 2006 STI and am torn if putting in all the work into the 2.5RS is worth it. After going through a full restomod build with my AE86 (it's not even done yet), paint/body work is so damn expensive and gives me ptsd lol... not to mention getting everything California emissions compliant.
If I only had one car and had to pick from that list. I would hands down take a 2005 STI out of the lot. Good for daily use. Plenty of potential, looks great, engaging no and fun to drive. The VBs are awesome but I get bored of the FA stuff pretty quick. If you don’t plan on modifying anything the VB is a good pick too
i would be checking the underside upper part of the boot(deep into the corner of the boot) for rust the gc's when they take a little knock in the rear the seam sealer cracks on the pracelshelf to boot section in the corners. edit: boot is the trunk
Would love to see a segment on how you keep all of the bolts and parts organized when you tear a car down to its shell. Do you use new hardware or is there a system to your madness? Awesome job Tanner! Super excited for the 22B build!
I’ve heard from a body guy that sand blasting the rust area is better than sanding. Cause you can’t get every piece of rust out without sandblasting it!!! But the rust treatment should help! I wish I didn’t live in the salt belt… yeah Canadian winters…🎉
There is an allen key slot on the sunroof motor that allows you to turn the motor by hand. To remove the sunroof properly you need to open it slightly and then pull off the headliner piece, which would have revealed 6 nuts you would take off to remove the sunroof body panel. Then the frame would have dropped no problem. Was that frame rust free? They are prone to rust and can be worth a decent amount if they're in good shape. Just went through this process on my RS 😅
Tanner, honest question, how in the world do you remember where every nut and bolt goes? Lol..good work man really looking forward to this rs build. Cheers!
Explain why the eg33 is going in the rear of the sti! I get it'll be like a Porsche but....If you have in another video I'm sorry. Point me in that direction.
I haven’t made a video on it yet. But big thing is space. With moving the engine to the rear we are under no space restrictions for cooling. And keeps the exhaust short. But biggest thing is cooling. I can run a solid V mount in the front to help keep that thing cool. I’ve always battled coolant temps on that engine
Tbh I’d just buy a WRX, you’d essentially need a donor car to swap everything and the Imprezas value will always be less than that of a WRX even with the swap
So hyped for this!!! I’m doing intake, catted down-pipe, catback, 340 fuel pump, 1050 injectors, fuel pressure regulator, boost controller and an Etune. Do I need to buy a wideband setup? It’s a 2018 STI
Even got the sunroof on the Rs that’s nice 👌 imho the gc8s are the best looking Subarus.. just the 90s Jdm look like old gtrs the gc8 almost like a r32 lil brother 😂

Hearing about the EG going in the back of the blue STI, I'm now wondering if that joke I made about the rear engine EG and front 2J is actually feasible 🤔 Don't know enough about this stuff to know for sure, but fuck it, I'll keep watching, love this content, always exciting to see how the cars come out
True clone time. Closed deck EJ22 block, thrust bearing conversion, and EJ20K heads with holes tapped for phase 2 intake manifold. Sure, you wouldn't have fancy valve timing, but it would feel more like the real thing versus doing an STI swap and slapping a body kit on it. Also, do you plan on sourcing the braces that hide underneath the front fenders, factory or aftermarket?
@Smeedia damn that's no fun. Carbon roof will look sick for sure. Was going to do it to my GD but that will be later. Bonding it will be fun. Lots and lots of clamps will be needed fs 🤣

Tear down and clean up is the worst part about all of this. Rebuilding is the satisfying part of it all IMO 😅 and yessir!
when scrolling through RUclips one does not simply skip a Smeedia upload.
