PRO TOOLS WITH TWO+ MONITORS/SCREENS (ON WINDOWS)
HTML-код

- This video will show you how to use Pro Tools on two or more monitors (screens) when running on a Windows OS.
We are using Pro Tools 12.7.1 and Windows 10, but this technique has been the same for the past 10+ years.
The main thing to remember is to STRETCH the gray background box across the monitors you want to use the Mix/Edit windows in, don't maximize.

Avid makes things so unnecessarily difficult its ridiculous thanks for the video
But they also make certain things so confortable !!
@@noproduser nah, this program is stupidly impractical
@@Mapachotgun Only people who use protools as their main daw say that protools is good when it is literally a caveman daw in some aspects like this.
Nah @@noproduser
unfortunately i have 2 different resolution monitors :/
Still it's possible
Yeah, me too but it still works.
@@LuisCasstle doesn’t work for me at all
@@USAJ31 I’ll try that tonight . Thank you .
@@USAJ31 what a stupid solution, not on your part just that pt makes you do that.
Thank you for this video! Spent way too long trying to figure out how to do this. I appreciate this!
BenoniStudio - I've spent too much time trying to figure this out on my own! Thanks for the excellent tutorial! I've purchased the duet display app to use Pro Tools | First between my Dell laptop and iPad, which now works seamlessly for its primary purpose after your video. Thanks again \m/
Thanks Benoni, this is exactly what I was looking for! Having a little struggle with Skootch today.
Certainly a most excellent video! Straight to the point and accurate. Thank you for sharing this info.
Thank you so much for such a well explained tutorial on something that has been eluding me.
Thank you! I just started with pro tools and I'm still getting the hang of it but this helped a lot! Thanks!
Thank you so much, having just acquired my 2nd monitor, was scratching my head how to use the 2 screens with ProTools. Issue resolved in seconds!
I dont usually comment on tutorial videos, but my God you are a legend👏👏
I needed this today!
Dude you're the man! Made it such a simple solution. Thank you!
Thanks for the video, it was exactly what I wanted to know.
Dude - So helpful and easy. Thanks much!!!
thanks you made ths simple and easy to follow! Great vid
Big big big thanks!!!! Great video and explanations!
Great video! Question for you: Do you know how you could stretch the full grey background but keep the "Files...help" menu over the edit screen on the right?
THANK YOU ,, quick fix , got me back on track , I appreciate it.
Thanks for the tip - I can't believe this still hasn't been fixed. My OCD kicks in everytime.
Thank you so much 🙏🏾✌🏾 this really helped me!
Awesome! Many thanks
I am so used to dual monitor for mixing, even LOOKING at a single monitor mix setup makes me feed PHYSICALLY claustrophobic.
That was helpful as I was struggling to make this happen.
Thank you bro. it help me a lot.
Ty bro.actually helped me a lot
do you have to save this in a project in order for PT to remember this grey window configuration? or is it independent to the project you are working on?
I thought I was crazy. Just switched over from Mac to PC and was like, what in the Tom Foolery is this. LOL! You've earned a sub!
I have a problem, I'm using two monitors but instead of a side-by-side setup, I have one monitor stacked on top of the other, so that I can look at both monitors without having to turn my head and make my ears off-center with my monitor speakers. When I try to drag the PT window down from the second monitor, it snaps back to the main monitor (bottom).
Thank you good sir!
Thanks bro. I was baffled LOL
thank you bro . this is useful
dang, so obvious yet it escaped me! thanks!
Holy, shit. I didn't think about it... Thanks man... Great video...👍
Thank you so much bro... you're the best...
thanks sir ! that helped
I have an HP computer running Windows 7, and the video was playing directly from the Pro tools program on a Sony projector screen. When I changed the operating system for the computer, the video does not display on the projector screen again. Can you help me solve the problem?
The most helpful
Thankyou sir!
THANK YOU!
Are you able to save the way you using multiple monitors? I can stretch, like you've shown but nothing I've tried keeps it that way after closing. Hopefully someone will reply. Thanks for the video.
OUIIII THANKS YOUUUUU VERY MUUUUCH
Hi, I am not sure how you do it, when I want to move things it does not move to the other monitor. Do you have to adjust monitor setting on the two monitors. Like duplicate, extend or show only one....? I tried all it does not work for me.
you deserve millions brother || great
Thank you bro! I was going through all the menus and pullimg my hair out haha
Ohhh muchas gracias hermano!
Unfortunately the trick only works on monitors with the same resolutions. Otherwise the main window will scale oddly (eg. if I pull it from the smaller one it will take just half of the other one). I know I can scale my monitors to the same resolution but I didn't buy a 32" 4k monitor to just use it as HD. Like mentioned on the video it's app problem, not Windows. Cubase or Reaper will handle that with no problems at all.
Exactly. Can confirm that
My problem is, I want to work on the right monitor but the drop-down menus are all the way on the far left now. Is there a way to get the drop down menus to appear on the right monitor without physically moving the monitors?
Would this work on other DAWS does anyone know. Thinking of Reaper say...
Thanks!
THANKS ❤
thank you !
Mannn they need to fix this!
Preciate the help!
thanks!
the top of my monitors dont line up, why doesnt pt just have a way top move it out of the box, i either have to lose the top and see part of my background...
maybe this is just windows 11` but when I stretch protools between each screen I still cant pull one page outside of the protools window
Thank you SO much i had NO clue lol
Hi Benoni! Thank you for this video but Have you a solution to keep this configuration when you open your pro tools session a second time? You have to stresh the pro tools Window every time you use it??!! thanks. Is it possible to open Pro Tools on 2 screens every time???
In the past closing Pro Tools using ALT+F4 would work.
great ! merci !!!!
What monitors are you using ?
My second monitor is above my primary so i guess I just don't get to use both of them. This actually couldn't be any stupider. why are they not just separate windows?
Dope
I know it's been a while since you posted this but I figured I'd reach out to you since it deals with multiple monitors, Pro Tools, Windows, and Waves plugins ... I have dual monitors located one above the other as opposed to side by side due to space restrictions. Avid has been little help, and Waves support blames it on Avid. When monitors are located one above the other, any large bus list or Waves plugin list that takes more than one page is stretched down to the monitor below (if you are using the top screen window when accessing the list) When you try to add a plugin or bus from the bottom display, the menu list stretches off the screen and isn't viewable or accessible. If I open the Display as you show at 3:37 in your video and move the monitors to side by side instead of top/bottom, those same menus fold over correctly and are completely accessible and viewable. However, that is a pain because to go from between the top/bottom monitors, I have to slide the mouse sideways - not good for workflow. I'd love to know if you've ever had this issue, and if you move your display settings to simulate your monitors one above the other, if you have the same issue. Thanks for your time.
i have the exact same issue and until now i havent been able to resolve it, so frustrating...
salvou minha vida!!
I have a laptop and a 50”. Pro tools will only let me stretch from the laptop screen to about the middle of the 50”. Studio One stretches the full width. Any ideas how to get pro tools to fill the screen?
did you try matching the resolution.
I had the same issue. It fixed itself (without resolution change) when I lined up my monitors right next to each other, side by side
man... can't believe its 2020 and this is still a thing...
YES!
Why would Avid make the plug ins move to another screen but not the main program....nuts.
Hello, does anyone know how to save the windows configuration so it opens up on 2 screens? I’ve saved the session multiple ways including in the template but it still opens up on the single screen. Thank you for any help!
In the past if you closed with ALT+F4 it would remember your window setting.
BenoniStudio Thank you!
It worked ;)
thanks
for fuck sake ur genius :) Ive been wondering for a long time but thank u :)
Can I do the same on I mac computer?
You can use PT across two monitors on Mac as well.
This is one of two main reason why I still prefer using Pro Tools on a Mac over windows. Sure, it kind of works but it is a pain, especially when you don't have to matching monitors, like my case with a 14" laptop and 24 inch external screen. The other reason is I keep an older Macbook pro with Firewire so I can still use an old Firewire 410. On windows I am stuck with a USB interface which is ok for editing but not as good for tracking.
This isn't working on my setup for some reason. I'm guessing because I'm in PT11 and one monitor is 720p and the other is 4k. I restore down and drag the corner of the window to scale it across both monitors and it automatically goes fullscreen on one monitor.
*UPDATE - I can do it, but if I make the pro tools window take up more than half of the second monitor, it snaps to be fullscreen on the second monitor. I also had to force my second monitor to 1080p even though it's 720p natively. Now I can use the bottom half of my wall mounted upper monitor and all of my main monitor... Not perfect but better than nothing.
*another update - I can get it to cover more than half the screen but it I get too close to the corner of the second display it automatically snaps to fullscreen on second window.
Thanks for the video!! I couldn't quite get an optimal setup going but I still very much appreciate the helpful content!
genial!
The Compressor Setting for this Voice over make it sound like you have a Lisp. I wish I new what know to turn down the n this happens on Compressors.
Thank you for the video and the explanation. But please keep in mind that this only works for your constellation, i.e. two monitors of the same size at the same height with the same resolution.
As of now, late 2022, Avid still has not fixed this ridiculous limitation. PT and Windows is a pain in the ass since always.
Grazie
thanks
thanks for watching
Did they ever fix this with an update for 2020
Nope
thx
I'm on a laptop and have a secondary screen with a different resolution, Avid seems to have reached their limits here...
Its avid. Fl studio you can attach or unattach windows and move them across 3 screens
An unreasonable amount of time has passed and they still havent fixed it
Am i the only one whos sad they didnt get to hear his song he recorded =[
Of course, it had to function unlike most apps 😅 Not very intuitive, but it works nonetheless.
Thanks for the help, though this method of operating on avid's part is plain stupid.
Welcome to Pro Tools 😆
Great video, but what if your monitors are different sizes? Another really simple thing that Pro Tools just completely fails to get right.
You can try setting the resolution the same on each monitor.
thank you wtf is worng with avid thank you for this.
Meanwhile, REAPER lets you pop out the mix window as a separate window.
As does Pro Tools on Mac. Why windows still hasn't fixed this is beyond me.
2 hunnid IQ dis guy
Its 2022 and Pro Tools still can't have simple fullscreen functionality across 2 monitors like every other normal program ffs...
Welcome to 1999. Im sure we'll get it by 2050.
It's 2021 and Pro Tools still doesn't support dual monitors but they'll charge you a monthly fee.
show...top..
Why won't Avid fix this?! It makes them look bad.
i fucking hate that i gotta use this program
I understand 😔 Pro Tools fatigue is real, bro.
worst DAW of all of them
This is so fucking stupid. As if Pro Tools doesn't support dual monitors natively. I don't wanna have to bloody restore my Window down.
Wrong. This does not work. The window doesn't stretch that much. Please stop spreading misinformation.
Talking of stretching... 10 seconds worth of extremely obvious (if you're not stupid) advice, "stretched" out to near 5 minutes!
I don't even have 2 monitors and it was obvious as soon as you said it was a problem. Don't maximize to one window with the main program window. I'd be suprised if anyone who found this issue didn't immediately try de-maximising the main window, if they didn't work that out god help them when it comes time to do something complex like mixing.
exactly. beginners should just know this! how dare someone who's new to Pro Tools or new to two monitor setups, or new to Windows, not instantly know what to do. smh
