    At 6 feet tall I was 215 pounds. I had Asthma, hay fever, borderline high blood pressure, 3 hernias, Arthritis, diverticulitis, internal and external hemorrhoids I was tired all the time everything hurt and I just felt terrible. I got surgery for the hernias and went on the McDougall diet. At 166 pounds my weight stabilized. All my health issues are gone and I feel years younger. God bless John and Mary McDougall .

    In 2014, after watching Forks Over Knives, I failed at a vegan diet after 3 months of full dedication. I didn't even try to go back until I came across Dr. Mcdougall's Starch Solution talk on RUclips. NONE of the other WFPB doctors (even to this day) explain well enough the most important foods for people that require high calorie intake. I'm an aircraft equipment mehanic and I will say that without Dr. McDougall's specific message, virtually every manual laborer would not be able to maintain a WFBP diet.

    • @sonterp1271

      Indeed. It's very difficult to live on salads and balsamic vinegar

    • @guidenredhawk
      @guidenredhawk 3 года назад +3

      What separates Dr McDougall from others in the WFPB movement is that he specifically focuses on what replaces meat in the diet. He also focuses on the Whole Foods (which many do.)
      He shows in history how major groups of people survive and thrive on a diet centered around some kind of starch, with supporting veggies and fruits.

      Sonterp To be honest.. Nobody can live off of salads and Balsamic vinegar. I'm not a manual worker and spend a big chunk of my day sitting or standing and still failed the vegan diet for the same reason OP did when I first tried it.

I’ve lost weight and but could still stand to lose 10 lbs. my friends think I’m too thin and one even put her arm around and said “honey, you need some protein.” I’m the only one of my senior friends not on meds and can run circles around them.

    Fantastic interview with my very favorite doctor! Gianna is an excellent interviewer too! I love what Dr. McDougall said about MS (Multiple Sclerosis). My husband died at age 41 due to MS. I wish we'd known this information in 1980 when he was first diagnosed. We always grew a garden and ate lots of fresh vegetables, and then we changed our diets a little further, after hearing about Dr. Roy Swank. But it wasn't enough. (We tried to eat what we thought was "low fat".) Changing from beef to chicken is not enough. The drugs that were prescribed didn't help, but they made his face blow up like a chipmunk. It wasn't until after he died that I discovered Dr.McDougall. (I used to listen to his radio show!) I would debate with my former mother-in-law about the relationship of diet to MS. She'd argue, "The MS Society says it has nothing to do with food." Like most people, she was brainwashed, bless her heart. PLEASE, everyone. Listen to this man. He speaks the truth. BTW, I'm now 66, my blood pressure is normal, my cholesterol is 112 (that is not a typo - my doctor was amazed), and I take NO medication. Oh, I and I have to add this. If you need more information or plenty of easy, yummy recipes, go to his website, www.drmcdougall.com - it's all free. :-)

      The truth is
      If you were to get off American diet and eat non processed foods

      You would see the difference
      Gmo foods
      And processed foods
      N the super size plates
      And drinks
      And the amount of sugar in foods is what is really making Americans fat
      The doctor needs to go to Greece and what they eat
      How they eat
      And how long they live
      However
      I just want to make it clear that I appreciate him
      I just disagree on certain points

      Are you talking about the video showing McDougall drunk? How do you feel about McDougall's attacks on Dr. Greger and Dr. Fuhrman? Doesn't McDougall invite criticism for crossing the line? Using Hollywood Jeff as his hitman is cowardly. In this video, McDougall cleaned up and sobered up attempting to ease the drunkard image he unwittingly revealed. Much of the historical data McDougall shares about "starch" (as he calls it), is whole-grain carbs, not the depleted white rice he peddles.

      whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta and black beans, carrots, spinach, kale, bananas, tea.
      I can get 'prepared' canned beans or regular canned beans and prepared is a real treat to me. I will save $20 a month if I cook from dried black beans. That's $240 a year, or something like $8700 over the next 35 years. I need to save that money, too, because I'll most likely live a long time. Estimates show it's likely gonna be upper 80s. I was surprised and saddened by the news of his death, especially because my uncle lived up to 92 despite his years of smoking, alcohol consumption, and eating just about anything carnivorous without regard to his health. Dr. McDougall's death seemed too early in comparison, as I was expecting him to be healthier than most based on what he teaches. My dad died at the age of 77 as well, but he had type 2 diabetes from his carb cravings, so I am a little bit confused, to be honest. My total cholesterol was going up over time and I tried no sugar diet and boom: It went to my record high at 215 mg/dl, with high being 200. I went on the Mcdougall diet in 2018 and pretty quickly total cholesterol dropped to 120, with anything below 140-160, depending on the scale, is ideal.
    It also fixed my high LDL, high weight, high blood pressure and high resting heart rate. I also came off my blood pressure medication and blood pressure is virtually normal, as well as heart rate normal, which was previously controlled by that medication. I take for granted how fleet footed I am now, as i was in high school as a soccer player, but I remind myself now. I have minor chronic problems that are irreversible such as acid reflux likely due to hiatal hernia, rare and moderate knee pain due to injury.

(FREE on his website) A lot of the recipes call for brown rice and green vegetables such as kale and broccoli. And she was using quinoa in the 70's before it became popular.

    • @larrymaloney877
      @larrymaloney877 5 лет назад

      Does "starch-based" mean depleted white rice for you? I eat whole-grain carbs for energy and cruciferous greens for nutrition. "Starch-based" doesn't define, or describe a healthy diet. Eating "starch" is like eating "protein" it means whatever you imagine. For McDougall starch is poor quality processed white rice. McDougall's strongest argument is a billion Chineses eat white rice. A billion small people is an example of why not to eat processed foods, including depleted white rice.

    • @kaylanichole5972
      @kaylanichole5972 5 лет назад +2

      Larry Maloney first off, Dr. McDougall has said many times that Brown is better, but white is fine. Second, yes, I actually eat white rice daily. White rice is not depleted, just stick it into an app like cronometer and you’ll see it contains multiple B vitamins, zinc, selenium etc

    • @larrymaloney877
      @larrymaloney877 5 лет назад +1

      @@kaylanichole5972, unfortunately, McDougall is being dishonest. White rice is so depleted of nutrients the government requires processors to "fortify" it with synthetic vitamins before it's allowed to be sold. I bet McDougall and his business buddy, Hollywood Jeff, doesn't tell you that! Unfortunately, your "app" does not detail the milling process. And anyone who follows shifty McDougall knows he's anti-vitamin, except B-12. And I prefer my B-12 minus the depleted white rice. Enjoy your depleted rice if that's your knowledge-based choice. Based on nutritional knowledge, I choose whole-grain brown, wild, and black rice, none from the southeast USA where the fields are contaminated with arsenic. Unfortunately, McDougall still espouses mid-twentieth century nutrition. Twenty-first-century nutritional science interferes with McDougall's antiquated nutritional beliefs. My loyalty is to my health, not a stubborn doctor who abuses drugs.

      Larry Maloney the proof is in the pudding. You do you. I’m the healthiest I’ve ever been. I’ll continue eating my white rice.

    • @larrymaloney877
      @larrymaloney877 5 лет назад +1

      @@kaylanichole5972, you say" I’m the healthiest I’ve ever been." That's does not reach the level of optimal health. And the reason for your health is an absence of meat & dairy and bottled oils & processed foods, not because you eat white rice. Since food volume is limited I prefer nutritious plants, not those partial plants processed by billionaires for resale to gullible consumers. Ironically, the germ from milled grains is packaged as "health food." The bran is also packaged and sold at a premium price. It's the depleted white starch that sells so cheaply. It's great for feeding a billion Chinese to prevent starvation, but I prefer healthy nutrition...not a lot, but potent. Depleted white rice does not kill cancer cells. If you prefer white rice you might try basmati, it has a nutty flavor. McDougall doesn't know this but the Chinese eat different white rice than the species sold in the USA. They are two different plants. Theirs is short-grain, and "sticky." It's easy to eat with chopsticks. With McDougall's species chopsticks don't work. But enjoy all the depleted white rice you choose. There are so many grains rice is a small part of my diet. McDougall chooses white rice to keep his diet simple hoping to attract the most customers. Wouldn't it be interesting to see a study of the relative IQ of folks who follow the various nutrition doctors? On average is there a difference? Or do we all average about the same with no statistical difference? I doubt smokers and non-smokers have the same IQ. What about meat-eaters and vegans? Each thinks the other is dumb. What is the truth?
