I recommend mellowing the rush a bit and loosening the twist slightly while you're weaving. By controlling the twist, you can make corrections as you go if there are slight variations in keeping in square. Also, it eliminates all those unsightly gaps between the strands on the finished seat. Makes for a much tighter, nicer looking rush weave.

The finished chair looks great! When I was younger I did chair canning and seat weaving as a business. Some suggestions. Don't wet the paper rush while you are working the chair as it will make it swell and then it shrinks later, you could wet it after to puff it up a bit. Stuff the inside with crumpled brown paper bags or unravel your scraps of paper rush and use that. cont.

I found these videos extremely enlightening. I just have one question - The chair I want to repair has a loose seat insert - what happens with the corners when there is no chair leg to work around? I would appreciate your advice. Thank you

Tie your ends, don't cut them and nail them, it's better to have knots under the chair, those nailed cut ends will break over time. For a finish you can use any wood finish, the paper is made from wood, I prefer shellac because it is more flexible and won't crackle like varnish, but lacquer is fine. Good luck, I like your attention to detail, well done.

I saw such weaving in Vincent Van gogh's paintings first and always liked the way it looked.
About many hours does it take to do one chair? I have seven I have to do. I figure I'll try to get one done a week. Is that possible?

Staining is not encouraged because with time the rush will darken naturally.
