- In this episode we start cleaning up our newly purchased, fixer-upper horse property! At just over two acres, it is so crucial that we make the most of the pasture we have! In order to do this, the first step was putting in a horse pen also referred to as a dry lot. This dry lot will be a place that the mules and horses can stay when the pasture is most vulnerable to over grazing. It is also centrally located and will make rotating fields extremely easy. Keeping the water tanks, salt licks, and hay in this pen will minimize impaction to our fields, since equines like to congregate around those areas.
In upcoming episodes we will be tearing out the old pasture fence, building new, dragging and reseeding our fields, putting in new irrigation lines, building a compost area for the manure, building a shelter, building a covered hay feeder, and setting up our fields for rotational grazing... so stay tuned!
We are also headed to the Black Hills of South Dakota to ride at Custer State Park, attend a Buck Brannaman clinic, ride at Windcave National Park and other various places along the Black Hills. Which we will be videoing and sharing on this channel as well!

Great video. Hard work pays off.
Thank you! It really does 😊 It feels really good to have this place mostly set up!
That looks sooo nice! Love the use of old railway ties!❤
Thank you so much! It was a fun project, and it’s sure nice to have a safe pen for our little herd 😊
Got it going on...like the video and the Mules & Horse.
Thank you so much for taking time to watch our videos and leave a nice comment! 😊😊😊
Congratulations on your new property and the results of your cleanup! The best part of the video was all of it! You have a new subscriber!
Thank you for taking time to watch our videos and thank you for subscribing! We should have a high desert video coming out next 😊
You guys kicked butt on that build! Very happy to have found your Channel, we're looking to build something like this in the near future ourselves and this is great knowledge and inspiration!!
Thank you so much!! 😊 We had a blast with that first project on our new place!
Hopefully your build goes great too! We’re not experts, but don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions 😊😊
The work is worth the reward!
Yes, it definitely is! It’s so nice to have a safe place for them :)
Very nice huge difference
Thank you! It feels good to have it set up 😊
I have Priefert panels (also Texas company), but has required me to use a dealer & pick them up. I've been wanting more panels. I'll look into what you mention because of the shipping option. The Prieferts don't need posts, as hook together. But... I don't have mules. You did a good job! Safe, secure, happy.
Awesome! These ones are designed to chain together, but we didn’t trust them lol we didn’t have a skid steer to unload them, so renting one was a little added hassle, but it was nice to have for digging holes anyway 😊
It looks a million times better!
Thank you! It feels so good to have that checked off our list! Next up: Pasture fencing 😊😊😊
Hey you all I guess I started in the present and now I'm watching you guys in the past catching up so to speak
Haha that’s great! Hopefully we’ll have more videos up soon! 😊
I’m not sure but I think railroad ties may be toxic because they have creosote. Hopefully your nice mules aren’t chewing on them. Thanks for the video, the place looks great. Love that high dry Idaho climate.
I think you're right about the ties... they're so nasty that the mules haven't chewed on them at all... at least not yet lol Thanks for taking time to watch and leave a comment! We're having a blast fixing up our new place :)
Those may be Keiger stripes!
Your place is looking great. Where does your buckskin/dun mule get the stripes on the legs?
Thank you so much!! We’re having a blast getting it set up 😊
The stripes come from the dun gene which is present in donkeys and some horses. We’re guessing her momma was a Dun since her striping is so pronounced 😊
I'm glad I just found your channel. Man that striped mule is flashy! If you don't mind my asking, how big is that dry lot? Are those 10' panels? Thanks
Thanks for checking out our videos, and thanks for the kind words about Reata, our striped mule! We absolutely love her ❤️
The Panels are 12 feet long by 6 feet high and the whole dry lot is right at 5,200 feet.
Don’t hesitate to ask if you have any other questions 😊
Great video guys! If you don’t mind answering I’m curious how much land you guys are working with to keep your miles on. And the dimensions of the dry lot. I apologize in advance if I missed it in the video. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much for the kind words! 😊 We just have 2.5 acres and the dry lot is roughly 40 ft by 150 feet. Just big enough so they can run and mess around in there. 😊
@@MTN_BUILT thanks for the info. My wife and I have roughly half an acre for a lot and was hoping we could keep two horses there if we fed hay of course. We live in Tennessee so we get over 50 inches of rain every year so mud would be a problem I’m sure 😂 keep up the great job on the excellent content
@@mikenorris232 oh nice! We actually have a .44 acre lot that we’re thinking of putting corrals on. It would be tight, but I definitely think it would be doable. But yeah, mud would be a rough one with that much rain! Lol
How many acres do you have ?
We just have 2 1/2 acres 😊
@@MTN_BUILT thats the size of land im hoping too purchase soon ❤lovely equines you have there
Awesome!! Congratulations - that’s super exciting 😊 Hope it all goes through! 🙏🏼
How many acres?
2.5 acres … just right for us! 😊 The dry lot is only .12 acres though.
I loved watching your video! You give me hope. I have a 2.3 acre property that I would love to bring my gelding on and get him a mini friend. I've been told it isn't enough pasture, but I've been researching otherwise.
@@emilyannsteinbach3716 Awesome! Thank you for the kind words! And yeah, I would sure think you could make it work. We do buy hay for the winter and spring months, but they do great on the pasture through the summer and into the fall. I hope you can get him and a buddy on your property soon!! 😊
