Im a 3rd year for a PhD in industrial-organizational psychology in the States and have been following you since my first year. I have to say Thank You! You have helped me to refocus at times, remind me to be kind to myself, and prioritize where necessary. I absolutely love you and that you continued the channel for so long!! ❤️❤️❤️ I’m still writing my proposal for the Review Board to get permission to study humans. But, this advice is gold and love that you share your wisdom. 🙏
my undergrad dissertation was probably the most miserable time i had in university. it went so bad it made me rethink my plans pursuing a masters. it took me several months with nothing to show for it. I even considered paying someone to do it for me. I really didn't know what a dissertation was. I still don't. my professor gave me a title "something something metamorphic rocks" and that was it. I ended up paraphrasing (if that's the word) a couple of chapters off a book about thermodynamics. the end. also the end of my career in geology lol.
Academic work is supposed to advance society. Such a task is not supposed to be easy or fast. Thank you for this video - I will shortly pick this topic up myself!
The UK system is also very very different to other places. In a lot of other places, it's also called Bachelor's thesis and Master's thesis. While in German you only call the doctoral thesis a Dissertation (like actually the same word). However, in any system, even if it's cumulative, I doubt you could write a good Bachelor's thesis in 7 days, let alone anything above that. Totally agree with what you're saying.
Great video! I am currently in the writing-up phase... although I feel like I've been saying this for quite some time. I definitely agree with giving yourself time and focusing specifically on writing up because most of my frustrations come from when I want to solely focus on writing but have other non-PhD-related tasks to complete. it is actually an enjoyable process when you aren't crunched for time. The best part is seeing your ideas come together and make sense. I told myself the other day: "I knew what I wanted to say in year 1, but I just didn't know how to say and show it until now" . Thanks for sharing and all the best with the Viva!!
Your videos are very inspirational. I’m 40 and doing my first dissertation this year. When I watch your videos, I feel less stressed about the whole process. Thanks. Also, please don’t stop doing them. I think that there are others like me who find them very helpful.
I've been looking forward to writing a section I'm working on for so long, but now that I'm doing it I find myself stressing about things I don't need to worry about, and catastrophizing every aspect of it when all I have to do is just write it. This video really put my task into perspective and I feel a lot better about it. Thank you so much!
Great video!! I dedicated the last 6 months of my PhD for thesis writing. I spent about 3.5 getting the bulk of it written and then worked for about a month or so doing some last minute analysis for an additional results chapter. For me, it was a tough process, I’ve never been overly keen on writing but I was so glad that I gave myself the time and space to complete it. I know one PhD student who wrote theirs in 6 weeks and they were doing crazy hours! I saw that and vowed that it wouldn’t be me!!
Mine took me 5 months. I religiously spent hours and sometimes an entire day and night, every single day until submission. My introduction was actually finalized weeks before I submitted because I wanted a perfect ice breaker. Students I tutored figured they could have in two weeks, actually I believe anyone can but you can never submit a good quality research thesis in two weeks. Unless you're looking for a C grade
My research was quantitative so the data collection process was a bit stressful since I used the stratified sampling method across societal classes. If random, maybe the time would have been shorter.
Love your grounded insights. What I like most about your videos is actually the hang out feeling. I always feel like you'd be a good friend to have, both inspiring, encouraging and ready to work. Even when research felt draining to you, you made a video to further analyze and understand those feelings. I think this is the most commendable of the intelligences. Both emotional, inquisitive and practical. Sending you all my love!
BTW, I'm a fellow PhD student, but I do like astrology's symbolisms in order to further understand my perspective on the world. Is it a pushy guess to assume there's strong virgo vibes in your astral map??
Im writing my Masters thesis, approximately 20k words, and it’s due for format evaluation (essentially submission as you cannot change content just format once submitted) on Nov 12th, about 25 days from now. I’ve been through a number of setbacks, including reworking every chapter because we were unable to analyze a rather important piece of data (exercise physiology, blood work, funding and time issues). If I could do it again I’d ask my advisor to set firm checkpoints. I have ADHD and find myself only having the time and will to write at night, like 10pm onwards. I work as a trainer and teach, so my schedule is rough. Having firm checkpoints would have avoided so much stress. I am burnt out and eager to be done, but I know I can look back and be proud in the end.
3.5 years of economic geography PhD and I really needed to hear this! I have been so stressed about finishing the analysis of a ton of interviews that the final writing bit seemed so daungting... It's nice to be reminded that it could actually be a cathartic experience. So, thank you!
3rd year Biomed PhD student. I'm writing a lit review, which can be used in your intro, which means less time spent on intro writing during thesis compilation. Also, at my Uni and faculty we require a minimum of 2 published articles in peer-reviewed journals, and at least 1 has to be Q1. These can also go directly in the results section as such. But still, you're absolutely right though. The full thing in 2 weeks? What a hell that seems! I will also buy me some time :D
From a first-year PhD student in Information System Management. I couldn't agree more with you. Writing in rush damages the joy of the work. Here in Taiwan, we have to complete the coursework in two years (41 credits) meaning a lot of term papers to write, plus publication. Having the research documented in a very short time is just a norm here even we don't want it to happen. Probably time management is the key. Could you please share how did you manage your time to complete PhD in 4-5 years? (with many projects at the same time) Thank you so so much!
In my experience 6 weeks of 'writing' over a 3 month time elapsed in a reasonable expectation for a UK PhD. I think it's important to realise that you will find stuff while writing that means it is often not possible for the writing to be one continuous block of time.
I mean, if you've already done your research and notes, it's not really a problem to do a 10-15,000 thesis (we're talking under- or grad thesis, not PhD) in a week or two. Because after research and note-taking, most of what's left is just constructing your argument and creating coherent sentences that.. well make sense lol. But a PhD or significant piece of research that you have barely started? NOOOOOO lol.
I guess it really depends on the field of study as well as the style of the dissertation. I just handed in mine. I am a physics PhD student and my thesis was literally just copy and pasting the papers I have written, and then adding an introduction and conclusion. Not very glamourous. LOL
I have one week until submission. I am spending tomorrow doing little cosmetic changes that I think need doing. I am waiting for some feedback still. Scared! Thank you for your videos :-)
Hey. Thank you for the video very inspiring. I am working on my thesis for master public health (one year program) right now. taking lectures as well as working on the thesis. The submitting is in 10th of Aug. I am really worried for the whole process, I wrote the first two chapters on the background, problem statement, objectives and chapter two on the methodology and now waiting for the response from my supervisor. Any tips or advices at this stage😀
My lab work hasn’t gone as expected and will likely have to proceed as is and another chapter of my thesis is regarding a review paper where I’m still extracting the remaining papers that met our criteria but I will have approximately a month to write it all. This is a masters thesis I’m talking about but still very worried and feel like I’m crawling/limping towards the finish line at this point
1:00 yeih I would like to hear that because I'm stressing out, sometimes I cannot write a paragraph, I stuck :(( I'm giving myself time but I waste it just thinking and thinking and thinking :((... I feel low, so thanks for the nice video :)
hi, kindly want to ask. is there any penalty if I already submitted my thesis to examiners and I only realize the following week after that some of my points in the methodology chapter are missing due to technical errors. How do I address this during the viva? can I say due to technical error? is there any better way to address this issue? please help...
I liked revision option on myeasypaper. I asked writer to write in easy words but paper still was too difficult to me. I asked to revise, writer asked what exactly is difficult, I replied, and he revised. My final paper was as I wanted. All was done on time.😍😍😍
Why did you make a video using that as a clickbait then ? ""So many videos about writing your thesis/dissertation in under two weeks! Please, please no. You do not need to do this. You have time, both during your PhD and at the final write-up phase."" well then don't make a video about it since you could write it in two sentences ? people who look that up are usually not lazy or make themselves go through that stress on purpose. It's common sense that the more time you have the better you can work. Usually a lot of people have to work/ Have a family to take care of etc. instead of putting them down or saying "well if you only have 2 weeks or a month just give up and drop out" maybe make another video for those who do have a full year or a full semester to write it. Guilt tripping from people who have a superiority complex is just cringy at this point. People go to enough stress and anxiety while writing a thesis (and no, the "just chill and enjoy it" bs does not work for most people. not everyone is like you. some people have anxiety and are already about to give up. Coming across your video while someone is looking for soluions is probably the worst thing ever) I don't get the point of this video but I can ensure you that it does more bad than good. Most of those who comment are those who have nothing to do with having to write a thesis in 2 weeks anyways. So you're just all sitting there putting down those who are freaking out or what?
"I gave myself the beautiful gift of time" - what a wonderful sentence!
