- Let me walk you through my process of writing a dissertation. I’m showing you how I wrote my Master’s thesis and I’m giving you academic writing tips and advice that helped me write my BA dissertation and my MA thesis. If you’re wondering - I hold a degree in English Language and Linguistics, and my BA dissertation was on the subjunctive in French and in English, and my MA thesis explored the intricacies of subject-verb agreement with coordinated subjects in Slavic languages (that’s a mouthful).

My biggest issue with my master's thesis is that I have to write it during a pandemic. The campus is off-limits, the libraries are closed, and my workspace consists of my bed. Oh, and my university hasn't given us an extension. I have two more weeks left, and I'm literally worried that I won't be able to finish it :(

@@sethtaylor8077 The process was horrible, but I got through it in the end. Didn't reach all the way to the top, but a pandemic B is an A in my book, so I'm happy enough : )

Hi Laura! I watched this video a few months ago in April when I was just about to start working on my Master's thesis and was feeling completely overwhelmed. The thought of writing this huge assignment in 3 months had made me so anxious that I was unable to sit down and just do the work.
I wanted to come back here and say thank you. Because I followed your tips and submitted my thesis last week, and it wasn't nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. The biggest mistake I was making was trying to read, make notes and write all the same time. And you're completely right, it just doesn't work that way!

10:36 the notes
Have your notes structured like your chapter, with titles and subtitles. It will be easier to polish it for the final drarf
11:22 write where you found the notes and write why you took this specific note
12:53 color code everything
14:02 date the files you send to the teacher and the answers you get
One huge tip. Dont use Word/Pages/.... Trust me people, learn LaTeX... Took me 2 days to learn the basics and I immediately converted every single written document longer than 10 pages to LaTeX. Is it slower in some areas? Yes. Does it randomly fuck up your document every other weak? No. Does it do exactly what you tell it to do? Yes. Does it have automatic citations/figure/table numbering & referencing which actually works? Yes. Only problems I encountered were language specific (I'm Czech) and a bit clunky tables management but web apps help (Google: LaTeX table editor -> profit). In the end you only need to know around 10-20 commands which you can easily put on a cheat sheet and once your document is setup its like 5 commands. Wish you all good luck with it B).

Same! :) This piece of advice seems crucial to me now. I've been postponing writing my disso for MONTHS. And if I'd actually made a thorough plan and chosen a reward, I think I would most definitely bring myself to do something instead of thinking "Nooo, I'm too tired after work" at the end of the day. Especially at the beginning stage of writing it's important just to make it a habit and that's where "rewards" come into play to trick yourself into it :D

(Also, the comparative grammar topic sounds excellent. It reflects ideas which I have had for a while, but have never completed. Thank you so much for this. I'm starting my masters thesis in education in Canada. Very pumped but also overwhelmed with such a large project. I'm more of a sprinter than marathoner. It's also so weird to be all alone with no classes anymore - tough not having people to discuss and bounce ideas. How often do you all talk to your advisor?
You said it: "a sprinter, not a marathoner." That explains my entire academic life, and really all my achievements. Damn. Maybe a clue to change my approach to smaller modules.

I wrote my 15000+ word bachelor's thesis in 2 months prior to the public presentation. I was writing literally night and day this whole time and was feeling stressed and overwhelmed cos I should have been working on it for about half a year instead of 2 months non-stop lol
Hopefully I won't make the same mistake with my master's... :)

I am in the process of writing my bachelor’s degree dissertation. One of the comments that my supervisor made to my writings was that I elaborated an article too much in my LR. Is there any off limits when it comes to writing? Like if I need to make it very short? But I am afraid that my points are insufficient .

Being concise is one of the best qualities of a good academic. Always ask yourself ‘Can I be more to the point?’, and make changes as you go. I always wrote waaay too much at the beginning and later wrote shorter sentences during editing.

What if I wanna write somth abt sla and sociolinguistics or semiotics How do I find a specific topic like grammar
that’s a perfect question to ask somebody who studies any of those fields! ask a professor or your supervisor to help you find some crossover. if there’s not any - focus on one different topic within eg. sociolinguistics, and find at least one thing that might spark your interest. follow the “oooohhh I wanna know more about that!” feeling, this tiny excitement ✨ you’ve got this!

I'm on the first year of master's studies now and I've already started writing my MA thesis. I'm finishing the first chapter :D I'm studying English philology and my thesis is in audiovisual translation of British slang based on the netflix series into Polish ;)

that’s precisely the point! it’s about distancing yourself from what you wrote, giving your head some air time, and then looking at it from a fresher perspective to edit better. highly recommend to forget what you wrote for some time 🫶

I agree with setting up stages in the writing process. I thought of the writing process in 3 stages and I allocated my time for each stage depending on how much time I felt I needed. This video is very helpful!

@@ameliaharper3762 Thanks! My situation is a little better now. I have depression and anxiety, probably a PTSD too so that was why I was performing poorly. My university allowed me to study flexible learning so the modules are spread out and I could handle them. Already got two out. Still, every day is a challenge!

"Introduction and conclusion last"
It's mandatory for us to write Introduction first and hand it in, even though when you write it you couldn't have been able to research the topic properly TT It enables us to plan out the future steps we're going to take though and have them checked by a supervisor, which is actually helpful :) I'm a bit surprised it's possible to write the main text first in other countries o.o
I think it all depends on the university/program/supervisor. Mine was soooo laid-back and I know that other supervisors in the same department were totally different and requested Introductions first!
