PhD sucks when your supervisor ain't interested. Its 1 year & he hasn't given back my 60 pages write up of my phd dissertation ( that's two chapters btw) Blocked & depressed at the moment. On bed & watching this video while thinking how lucky you are to have had a good supervisor. Phd depends a lot on the supervisor!
It makes it so much harder when your supervisor sucks. Sometimes it is possible to change supervisor, it is at my university, and you can discuss with various deans of research. Another option is to find a secondary supervisor. Another option is to be assertive and schedule a meeting to communicate your disappointment, take a support person into this meeting to back you up. I counsel a lot of uni students, and I'd recommend that you discuss your concerns with a university counsellor, which is confidential.

Great video! My way of creating "little goals" was writing up a detailed index and colouring it with green (when done), yellow (when working on it), and black (when undone). I didn't use red because it stressed me out.
Ideally, we could do a lot DURING the PhD! I didn't realize how important it is to write DAILY, even for 30min-1.5hr a day, it's still a lot better than 2 months crunching in the end (I mean, pretty incredible you were able to do that)! Your illustration from WORD looks awesome, for more complex Chapter 1 figure, students could consider the free software Inkscape (I introduced it from one of my videos), it's great for irregular shapes.
My supervisor couldn't care less and my phd has no classes to attend, it's "just" the research, therefore I end up feeling brutally alone and lost. Don't have anyone to whom exchange ideas with, what would really totally help. On top of it, don't have any grant and I'm an immigrant in Portugal, so I have to work in a job I hate for minimum wage and I have two kids, divorced. Not gonna miss these times when and if I manage to get my thesis aproved. Have 7 months to deliver and defend it. Not one chapter writen so far, just one computer for three students (my daughters and me). I should give up, although mothers are almost naturally multi-tasks people, life doesn't help a single mother who tries to work in science. It's not the lack of free time. It's our mind who is so exhausted of being the one who has to work, take care of the family and write a thesis, all without any help at all... I really don't know how I'm gonna do this but I must.
Hey Adriana, i just came across your comment and I couldn't just pass because I feel you really. Although my situation is not exactly the same as yours but I am also in the desperate position. No grants, not enough money to get by, not enough time to write, feeling alone.. I can't describe everything here, but believe me, my situation couldn't get worse😵But I am determined to finish my ph.d journey. I hope we can encourage each other and help each other by exchaning ideas! I don't know your research area, but I would love to hear about your research topic! Let's not give up👍 just in case if you want to talk, my email is here: raul8401@gmail.com ( I am a female living in Tokyo, Japan) Oh, btw my name is SeungMin and social science major:) Looking forward to hear from you😊

@@denypopovici9619 Hi! Well, my supervisor passed away in january/2023, and the university took three months to indicate this time two professors to take his place. By then, I already had 95% of the thesis writen, and they had a lot of observations for me to correct, many changes to do, one of them being to convert the language from brazilian to european portuguese. I was, at the same time, so grateful for finally having some real feedback, but also exhausted from all the things me and my family had to go through that I decided to put everything in stand by. Decided to put my mental health and my family's well being first, came back to Brazil, regained my life back and now I am able to dedicate to finish it. Thank you for the empathy. ☺️
I just passed my candidature defence and I got many insights and inputs from the examiners to add to my thesis, I also have ADHD which always bother my concentration and focus in writing, this could help me and watching ur videos gave me motivations. Thanks!
You're so kind & gentle & humane! Thanks for taking the time & effort to demystify this ordeal for us mere mortals. I'm having the Phd process equivalent of a "nervous breakdown". Working full time & Phd-ing nights & weekends...
Progress over Perfection is the point I needed to hear! I've just finished my 1st year of my Law PhD. It's part time, but career responsibilities also mean I should be doing continuous writing. I've only written half of a chapter, which was near Perfection in terms of requiring little revision now going forward. But my supervisors have been urging me to just write a chapter concerning a very wide and endlessly debated theoretical topic. The topic fascinates me, and as a result I'm trying to read too much before writing. The irony is because the topic is endless Perfection in this area will never be achieved! Thank you for a great video
I suppose in law you can’t avoid perfection. I’m currently in the third year of my PhD and I can’t imagine writing the thesis in 2 months. I’ve started last year and I’m no where near finished.
I wish the world get more PhDs like you , I am paying to university and the things I expect to learn and understand during my PhD I'm learning here from you free :) Thank you
One really difficult part I find writing is going back and rereading. It’s very tough to be sure you didn’t make a silly mistake in writing or sometimes I notice an idea I want to completely rework. What can be tough is then making sure that idea still leads into the next portion congruently. Sometimes I spend days rereading and redeveloping ideas alone, but I suppose that comes with improving. Peer revision must be a big help that I should implement. Great video
Thank you so much Andy Stapleton for this video. I am in the second of my Ph.D. (writing phase) and I have been all over the place. I am ready to put in the work and focus. I am a full-time candidate. I guess I will adopt your way of working literally every day because when I pause for a day it translates into weeks. I have wasted almost 3 months
Videos like this is why I watch PhD videos whilst I'm an undergrad, as well as watching content for my level. There's so much I can start working on now to make sure I get a 1st class degree.
Thanks so so much your video Tutor Andy and congratulations for your so huge great thesis book. It is a real start for me writing my thesis in just 1 and half month left. Thanks.
I have one year left to finish collecting data , do data analysis and write my thesis ! I have 5000 words of draft methodology done ! Wish me luck!! This video motivated me 🎉
I just love your video. It is making me to move ahead with my thesis writing and getting it done with correction. Your speech is very Very motivational. I thought that I have stucked with my thesis AND GETTING it corrected but your speech bring me some light. Thanks a lot.
Hello fellow UON'er, well done! I have just discovered your channel and am becoming more motivated to (possibly) chase a PhD. I completed my Undergrad in 2013 (Ourimbah Campus) however I now live in Western Sydney and Id like to do a PhD in Clinical Psych after the last nearly a decade working in the industry (without registration). Thanks for the website, lots more to watch and consider. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks for this video! I’m 30 months into my master’s thesis, and haven’t started on the main paper. I’m hoping to start my PhD in the fall, but I just need to finish this darn paper. These steps should really help me.
fourth year of PhD in history here. It has taken over my will of life and destroyed any confidence and love for the subject I ever had. Fighting my supervisor on every step of the way. When they couldn't get me to do what they wanted, they resorted to minimizing and picking on every single word I write, deeming it unfit and bad. No motivation whatsoever, only passive aggressive comment and insults that are enough to make me miserable. I tried talking discretely to one of the professors, they decided to stay out of it. Every day when I open my laptop I want to vomit and my stomach hurts. I have nightmares. Is it really worth it? At this point I hate Academia and every aspect of research and writing, I am thinking of finding a job at a farm and tend to cows. Thinking about that is the only thing that makes me smile these days. Years of life and youth wasted.
Okay, it is very possible. And remember that a thesis is written one word at a time. Work every single day on a very focused part of your thesis according to an outline and I'm in no doubt that you could finish. Try not to become overwhelmed by the magnitude of it but rather focus on one small part at a time.
What I absolutely love about your videos is that although it comes from a complete different academic sphere- I’m researching Kabbala and Islam, it was very helpful, accurate and conclusive. Thank you brother, your clarity is inspiring
I'm writing up the thesis while already working in a non-related job. Not having a proper working space at home really kills me and being "caged" at home blocks my writer's flow as well. Usually I am super productive when I write in a library environment, but during the pandemic it's just not possible. How do you guys and girls deal with it?
I have a similar problem. currently working on a paper, but doing it from home and only home with no proper and private working space is difficult because the work-life boundaries seem to be non-existent. personally during the pandemic, because we can't go to the library, I deal with it by telling my family that I will do this I will do that for two reasons: to establish boundaries, and to ensure that I would get the motivation to write/read because now that people know what I am supposed to do, I will have to do it. and I guess that works for me? :)
I technically started writing my thesis in 2020. I wrote a review and put together a 1st author paper within those 3 years. So when it came to write my thesis I was 80% done. I just need to complete a chapter..
I used to think that writing is challenging, especially, working on a book; without any proper training or experience, I started writing a book, and within 3 to 4 months, it was done - 300 pages, 250 words per page. I took some help from the internet, but the rest was on me. I read some books and checked how they were written, my audience, my main argument, thesis, and information, then the following was just effortless. I chose those topics I already had a lot of information, so I did not need to read a lot. Now I am on my third book. Yeah, I love reading and writing to some extent that I can write for the whole night with small breaks, but I did not do that as I knew that I would be able to write in the time given to me by the publisher. Now I am thinking of getting a Ph.D. degree, which is in the offing, as I have already started the process to go to London and stay there till the finishing date. Thank you for reading. One thing more, once, I accomplished three tasks altogether - IELTS, CELTA, Master's degree. English is not my first language, but more than that has been since it started residing in my mind.
Thank you. I count time in blocks of 30 mins, even if I do back to back blocks, then write an X on my calendar for each block done. I then try to beat last weeks number. Very motivating.
Thank you so much, Dr. I have decided to complete my thesis, but I just realized from your words that I should start by gathering data. I guess I will need like three to four months of serious concentration. Thanks a million.
I agree with your advice, but would add it often isn’t in our power not to be heavily directed to focus on formatting. Some supervisors both lead the project in directions they shouldn’t, and also expect perfect formatting every time. It’s heavy to deal with, and quite common at least with the friends I’ve heard from. Many lamented that the chapters their supervisors urged them to cut out, were the best ones in the end. We have to take more power over our journey... alas, I am not sure I know enough to do that confidently yet.
I saw a tutorial of yours a while ago about growing a beard. It helped and I got a nice beard. Now I was searching for a tutroial on writting a thesis and... Wait a minute, isn't that the beard tutorial guy?! hahah. I hope my thesis turns out as good as my beard
Thank you very much for your tips! I'm a PhD student in my 3rd and last year (or better said in my last paid year) and it's absolutely my goal to get my PhD finished until the end of this year. Unfortunately, I have some issues and problems and I really hope that I can solve those problems without going into too much detail here.
From day 1 of my PhD until now after 4.5 years, it's been extremely depressing, negative and aweful experience, and I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel. No idea how to finish it. I have been thinking about quitting every single day.
Hang in there. Set small goals, don't see the whole picture. Write one chapter at the time, that is your only goal - that one chapter. The PHD don't exist, as of yet, only that chap. Then you move on to the next, and the next. Then you bind it together. If you have writers blockage, just write - don't matter if it is bad or not, just get something out on the paper. In fact, it should suck. Let that be your goal, to write awfull language. Does not matter, just write it down. In the end, you go over the language. You can do this, it is just in your head.
I am like you and that I need to keep my momentum going but I do have days where I do less work than others. If I have a day where I wake up really motivated, I might work for 10 or 11 hours, but on the flipside if I have a day where everything seems to be going wrong or I just have a lot of personal stuff I need to take care of, I don’t feel bad about taking that day or that half day off. what really seems to kill me is when I have multiple days off in a row that start to pile up. The intimidation factor of starting again seems to go through the roof.
Hello Dr. Andrew Stapleton! How are you! Your have got an amazing speaking skills and you share things in such a way that anyone can be benefitted from you. I do appreciate your views and knowledge about Ph.D. Thank You from the deepest part of my heart. @ Amit Anand from Bihar, India. 💌✍👍
Would it be too much to ask if you could do something similar but about writing a paper based on your thesis?:) i am in that moment and a bit overwhelmed. Thank youu
I started the vid thinking the advice might not be super relevant to my type of thesis. Then I see it's on organic photovoltaics, I go 'what', I'm working on perovskite PV's. Maybe the advice will be relevant. Then at the end you mention that you're from the same uni as me! I'm gonna look your thesis up. I used to do OPV's.
How many words are there? How to have a balanced thesis between chapters in case we have 50,000 words and 5 chapters -introduction -literature review -methodology -analysis, result, and discussion -summary and conclusion
It is good advice if you have funding to do your work and you don't have a full-time job. And I agree with discipline and celebrating little achievements, also self-care.
Next attempt is going to be build in only 2 hrs morning (25/5/25/5/25/5/25 pomodoros) on sat and sun. so that i keep the momentum going but dont push myself for more concentration later and schedule some fun boardgames or coffee outside. Also after a thesis meeting that i feel good about how i did, i build in more rest because that tends to send me into 'oh see i am doing fine' mode, or perhaps perfection paralysis because the end comes closer - in either case i am trying to work out my best schedule too. thanks for your tips and for repeating that it is such a personal thing and it depends on the person what works best!! and in my case i think it depends on the week sometimes, what works.
Good Evening sir, can I use second hand interview and inactive observation for my qualitative research study? Please sir answer me! I am waiting for you! No one like you on this planet Earth 🌍 who create amazing guidance for all over world scholar!!! Keep it up dear sir!
Any tips on finishing the thesis in 2 months during COVID lockdown? I find it nearly impossible to switch off from work when I am working from home, as does my (also PhD) partner, so your "6 hours in the library" would be perfect for me in the pre-pandemic world but, alas, I am unable to do that... Thanks for the video!
i think it is really important to try and simulate as much as you can that work is in a separate space. if you can have a separate dedicated office room, otherwise a dedicated office table. some people hang a plank from a wall to have a "desk"... another thing to try is to "walk to work" which is leave the house, walk, and come back. and do the same after perhaps. and change in and out of "work clothes" supposedly can also help the body. I heard of women who stopped doing their makeup but then started again just to have that feeling of gettign ready in the morning.

What I absolutely love about your videos is that although it comes from a complete different academic sphere- I’m researching Kabbala and Islam, it was very helpful, accurate and conclusive. Thank you brother, your clarity is inspiring
thank you ! this video does boost people who are stuck while writing
Great tips. Thanks for reminding me that I need to write to earn a Ph.D.
I'm writing up the thesis while already working in a non-related job. Not having a proper working space at home really kills me and being "caged" at home blocks my writer's flow as well. Usually I am super productive when I write in a library environment, but during the pandemic it's just not possible. How do you guys and girls deal with it?
We don’t, we are depressed and try to fight it.
Thank you Andy. You are appreciated ❤️🙏🇱🇧. Greetings form Lebanon
My pleasure!
Great video. I concur with the the sentiment that a supportive supervisor and Committee is key to producing quality research faster than typical.
Thank you Andy for this helpful advice .you encouraged me to finish my thesis writing as soon as possible
Wonderful! Good Luck!
Thanks, this is very helpful. Please upload more videos about PhD.
I will! Thanks for your support!

I technically started writing my thesis in 2020. I wrote a review and put together a 1st author paper within those 3 years. So when it came to write my thesis I was 80% done. I just need to complete a chapter..
I'm also p.hd student . i did'nt write about my thesis work yet .... yours words encourge me to do my work..... keep it up
I used to think that writing is challenging, especially, working on a book; without any proper training or experience, I started writing a book, and within 3 to 4 months, it was done - 300 pages, 250 words per page.
Wow!!
I am in a humanities degree and while we don't have graphs I would agree completely. Get writing!
Thank you so much, I was about to quit this. Thank you. Thank you. Hope I can come back and say I finished my thesis.
You got this! I'm pleased that the video helped! Little by little and you'll get there!
congrats!
You're amazing, thanks for these tips Andy! It will come in handy when the time comes to start writing 💪🏼
Thank you for putting out such valuable content! I would much rather watch your videos on New Year's Eve than party!
I saw a tutorial of yours a while ago about growing a beard. It helped and I got a nice beard. Now I was searching for a tutroial on writting a thesis and... Wait a minute, isn't that the beard tutorial guy?! hahah. I hope my thesis turns out as good as my beard
Thank you Dr. Andy !
You suppress my stress that I suffer from these days

Congratulations, and thank you for the tips
Thanks for sharing your experience, it's encouraged and inspired me a lot.
Thank you very much. I just put a plan with a minimum target of 200 words a day.
Thank you very much, Dr Andy. Your video is really inspiring and helpful so much to me.
I hit gold and subbed in under 2 minutes. Great clear delivery 👍

Great video. I have to write my thesis. I am planning to set a goal of 1 month. Dont know how m gonna complete it but I'll try my best.
My job today is to help learners finish their thesis and the only thing I can say is that the key is to GET ORGANISED
Thank you Heisenberg!
Nice!! It was very helpful!!
Glad it helped!

Thank i ll follow your instructions you make me taking it easy and thinking positively thnks
Would it be too much to ask if you could do something similar but about writing a paper based on your thesis?:) i am in that moment and a bit overwhelmed. Thank youu
This is so useful! Thank you so much:)
Thanks for motivation.
Andy Stapleton TE AMOOOO (adoro tu contenido)
My god, this triggers my anxiety so bad. Been there done that, glad it’s done. Even though it was kind of fun and gave me PTSD
UoN! Haha nice coincidence, I'm just getting into action on my Honours thesis, doing environmental science at Callaghan!
Great tips. Thanks📝
Ultimately, it depends on the advisor
How many words are there?
How to have a balanced thesis between chapters in case we have 50,000 words and 5 chapters
-introduction
-literature review
-methodology
-analysis, result, and discussion
-summary and conclusion
Great advice!
I get tired and burnt out quickly. How can I keep energy and focus to write all day every day?
Any tips on finishing the thesis in 2 months during COVID lockdown? I find it nearly impossible to switch off from work when I am working from home, as does my (also PhD) partner, so your "6 hours in the library" would be perfect for me in the pre-pandemic world but, alas, I am unable to do that... Thanks for the video!
Just make sure you get enough sleep every night and eating healthy.
there is a youtube video about how to write your thesis in 2 months ruclips.net/video/hPyeMay32Yc/видео.html
Kindly mail to dentistry@bioleagues.org can help you out in thesis writing I work in publications
i think it is really important to try and simulate as much as you can that work is in a separate space. if you can have a separate dedicated office room, otherwise a dedicated office table. some people hang a plank from a wall to have a "desk"... another thing to try is to "walk to work" which is leave the house, walk, and come back. and do the same after perhaps. and change in and out of "work clothes" supposedly can also help the body. I heard of women who stopped doing their makeup but then started again just to have that feeling of gettign ready in the morning.
Interesting, I am also working on nanoparticles! 😊
