Boba u4t is pretty damn good stock. You can only feel the scratchiness if you're really trying by going slowly. I lubed mine but I tried some stock and they have their own appeal imo, might leave them stock next time I get some more.
I went with both. Started with the Royals and decided after a few weeks to try the U4Ts as well. I have to say, even though I like very high tactility (which the Royals have in spades), I think I like the U4Ts a little better. They feel more premium to me, which I think is mostly attributable to the more rounded but still very pronounced bump. The Royals were great, but started to feel like a one-trick pony. I’m lazy and haven’t lubed either, but haven’t had any issues. The U4Ts are definitely deeper in pitch than the Royals, which I prefer a lot more and contributes to that premium perception. Take it from someone who was scared to give up the Royals’ tactility, the U4Ts are a great upgrade/replacement and the praise is not without merit!
The U4Ts are so good out of the box. Really consistent factory lube. I compare them to Glorious Panda's that definitely need lubing with Tribosys 3202 to get rid of the annoying spring ping. Both great switches in their own right. I honestly don't get the hype with Box Royals on the other hand. The sound like low key clicky switches to me. You can just hear it have a subtle click. Unnecessary extra noise.
Excellent review, no pretravel + D shape + long stem thock is exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks for showing the leds difference too, I know gazzew makes led tops but I'm pleasantly surprised with the decent led performance on the stock opaque tops!
The BOX Royals have a tendency to turn clicky over time. Personally I’m fine with this but it definitely happens to some people. I put an O ring in the bottom of the housings on mine to make them more clicky because I like clicky switches. Has this happened to yours yet?
Gazzew Boba U4T is a very poor switch, something I ended up opted out of, even that I have about 150 of them bought. It has a great feeling, a great sound, it is tight and has no wobble, but the chattering (double activation on a single click) just kills it. You never know whether you will get the chattering on a press or not. So, about $100 go down the drain because of that. So sad. It could have been it.
@@Romsicle Well, a good batch for you (or a bad batch for me). As I typed this very message, I had a chatter on the '(' key, just like that. I am still thinking of using them (soldering them into a Leopold FC900R keyboard), but I don't want to regret it.
@@Romsicle No, not yet. I finished another Leopold 900 with Gazzew Boba U4 (the silent ones), L&F, and they also chattered, some of the switches. I switched out a couple of them and and now it barely chatter, yet the space bar is still a big problem. Now it is my favorite and most silent keyboard. So, I want another one, but not silent at all. So, knowing about the chatter issue, I ordered about 150 Gazzew Boba U4T, put them into a hot swap keyboard for testing and filter out any chattering keys, slowly getting less and less chatter, to have only the stable switches in the keyboard. Once I'm satisfied with the stability, I'll L&F them and solder them into Leopold. But, so far, I get so much frustration when I use them, that I started looking for other options. Still haven't decided whether I will bother dealing with them or get something stable that just works, even with worse sounds/feeling. Anyways, no other switch gave me so much trouble, this one is like a baby, which you have to nurse, just to get your keyboard working as stable as any $5 keyboard does.
It's not the housing it's the box contact design where the notch doesn't touch the contact leaf directly it touches a rounded nib connected to the leaf, which is the greatest cause of scratchiness in mx designs. which is which optical switches are so smooth.
All box switches do that are tactile, unfortunately -- I had the issue with Silent Browns, Burnt Orange, and Royals. If you get a clicky box tactile like Jades or Navies it won't matter, but I can't stand those.
Bobagum (clear top) vs novelkey creme vs equal tangerine vs gat yellow (black bottom/clear top) On GMMK Pro - what would be the best RGB and best sound? I am stuck :|
Exactly what I was going to say. The sound of stock Boba U4Ts sounds so much better than lubed. BTW, I'll be getting my Boba U4Ts in 3 to 4 days. Can't wait to check em out. Super excited! :D
Box crystal switches are on clearance on novelkeys so I got 70 at something stupidly low like 20 cents per switch or something Yea after watching this video I’m even more glad I hopped on that sale lol
To me the boba switch has a P bump vs D.. maybe i dont have enough experience in tactile switches.. have about 10 in my colection but apart from boba they are all kaliths
Anyone have recommendations for tactiles WITH pre-travel? I have some Hako Royal Trues in one of my boards, but they made me realize that I'm not really a fan of that stiff feeling of having no pre-travel.
People say that all the time, but it's just not true. There are no issues with gaming on really any switch, it's just up to your preference - I gamed on MX Blues without issue for years and years. Though, it is true that linears have a "faster actuation" since they don't have a bump and are easier to double-hit.
Went from possibly the worst switch in the market (mx blue) to arguably #1 tactile in the market right now boba U4T. I have some zealios v2, holy pandas lying around that I bought. I'm kind of afraid that I'll be disappointed if I make a board with these switches
I added the box crystal royals to the alphas of my current board, the rest of the keys are my old outemu silent forest switches. the crystal royals are supposedly a little scratchier than the regular box switches but the rgb lighting looks so much better with the crystal switches. the light diffuses super evenly and looks bright and vibrant. when my U4Ts come in I'll have compare for myself!
Not sure who to trust here. Chyrosran said the Box Royals are the best implementation of the tactile design in MX switches. Though I've also watched review that said Zeals / u4ts are better. Im looking for max tactility which one should I go for?
chyrosran doesn't like mx style tactiles because of the rough and saw blade like feel they inherently have. it's difficult to understand this if you haven't tried other switch designs like alps skcm or topre. Simply put, the mx design is pretty subpar for generating a good tactile bump and they pretty much all feel like a disrupted linear switch rather than a genuinely tactile switch. You might still them though so it really depends on you. I personoally prefer the sound of the u4ts and the key feel of the box royals.
I ended up ordering like 40 of each to see which one I prefer. The U4Ts sound better and feel smoother compared to Box Royals. The Box Royals on the other hand are noticeably more tactile it's actually more by quite a bit. But they feel scratchy. Their sound is more of a muted click. Both are great though they are very different switches. They use very different designs from what I can understand.
@@ziting5756 yeah that’s what I experienced too. Box tactiles definitely feel a little bit rougher but I’m a heavy typist so its less noticeable for me and I personally like them. And I agree that the U4Ts by far sound better.
I'm puzzled as to why these two switches were compared since they have such different properties. I figured Box Royals would be more compared to something like the Kiwis since both are supposed to have sharp tactile bumps, and Bobas against pandas and/or halo switches for the D shaped bump.
dude i game on my box navy you can game on anything you like
You _can_ - but _should_ you?
I’m so lazy when it comes to lubing switches, those box royals seem like a good choice 😂
They are scratchy, and produce a fair amount of spring noise stock, so you should lube them
They start clicking once factory lube goes off. It happens after 2 months of active use
Boba u4t is pretty damn good stock. You can only feel the scratchiness if you're really trying by going slowly. I lubed mine but I tried some stock and they have their own appeal imo, might leave them stock next time I get some more.

I agree! I think the U4T just spoils us with that clean thock noise that comes along with the tactility.

The info shown at 0:28 is not correct. The U4T have a shorter bottom out distance because of the longer stem pole.

I strongly defend the U4T because I've been using it for so long and haven't had a single issue with them.

After trying many tactile switches, Boba U4T is my go to recommendation for people that want nice tactility.
This keycaps give me a headache with aura 😱
Will this work for gaming?
Great review! If neither of these switches are good for gaming, do you have any recommendation for a Tactile switch for gaming? Thank you!

Ay growth - I was going to build a board with HPs but ever since testing the Boba U4T, there's no going back to HP.
Boba u4t, should I choose 62g or 68g? Please help. Thank you.
Get 62g and if it's too light, then buy some 68g springs. 62g should be the perfect weight for most people.

Which sounds closer to the Holy Pandas? Glorious Pandas or U4Ts?
Closer to Glorious Pandas: U4T's are just slightly more higher pitched.
thx 🧐👌
dry and clicky royals typing when? XD
I might pop out a clicky switch comparison later LOL
I got the Zealios V2, Glorious Pandas, Durock T1's, and I'm excited to put the Boba U4Ts on another board!
can't decide between GP, T1 and the U4T (Zealios to expensive for me). Can u tell me which of them u prefer and maybe why?
@@chayz3126 U4T because it's extra tactile and has a nicer sound profile thockier
Boba 62 vs 68 , does 62 has the same amount of tactility ?
Tactility is the same but 68 should feel slightly more tactile because of the spring tension.
