  • Highlights of our recent dispersed camping in Mormon Lake, Arizona. Which was also the weekend of a popular bike rally known as "Too Broke for Sturgis." We also explored a few new dispersed camp sites as well as campgrounds in the area.
There are plenty of things to enjoy around Mormon Lake - camping, hiking, ATV adventuring and fishing are some of the most popular activities of the summer. In the winter, snow skiing and sledding are also very popular. There is a small store as well as RV camping and rental cabins avail in the little village near the Mormon Lake Lodge.

I've never been to this area, but have been curious. I enjoyed listening to you and your wife talk as you drove around. Thanks for showing us around!

You didn't go far enough around the loop road . If you go a few miles past double springs and turn left on Weimer springs rd there are many free dispersed camp sites on that road . Ive camped there many times. A short distance down that road the Arizona trail crosses it that goes from Mexico to Utah. Theres a sign at that road that reads, Weimer spring, Antelope park, and lockett ranch, its just after a cattle guard.

    Thank you

The dispersed spot we camped in was fine for tents, but Double Springs CG is great too if you don’t mind paying the fee, it has nice camp spots, tables, water and restrooms available as well as a host with firewood and ice. Lots of great hiking trails in the area and the Lake Store is close by too!

I thought Mormon lake was the largest lake in Arizona. What happened?

It's a funny thing, if you look at most of the maps of Arizona (even the newer editions) they still show Mormon Lake as a quite visible blue spot of water just south of Flagstaff, but sadly it's been nothing more then a small duck pond over most of the last 40-50 years that I've seen. There have been a few years in the past (about 15 years ago) where it did fill up with water, but since it's relatively shallow (even when full it's only about 10 feet deep!) the water evaporates pretty quickly. I think the largest lake in Arizona (actually in Arizona completely is probably Roosevelt Lake or Lake Mohave (Lake Mead and Powell are kinda "shared" lakes with Utah and Nevada.) My wife still swears her uncle told her he actually water skied on Mormon Lake in the past! lol.

It used to be the largest NATURAL lake in Arizona. There are much larger man created lakes .it's been pretty much dry for about 25 years , kind of swampy in spring after the snow melt ,dry by late summer.
