  • Is Crossfire ever a good idea? Are Chinese X79 boards still a good idea?
No... almost never. But that's not going to stop me.
But first... What am I drinking???
One of the classics that started it all on the West Coast, it's the Sierra Nevada (Chico, CA) Pale Ale. What more can I say? Just a great beer.
And for an encore, I've got a From Astoria With Love from Fort George (Astoria, OR). A Russian Imperial Stout that doesn't skimp on the chocolate, coffee and bitter nuances. Terrific if you like this style of beer.

Excellent coverage! The 1620V2 is the odd one out, it is indeed fully locked. 1620 isn't, and also the 1650V2, 1660V2 and 1680V2. With the regions, I had a look at the buyer feedback and hands-down, most of these parts, go to Russian customers. They are also covering these parts almost daily on many channels, so I guess in that market the value must be decent. I think without that demand, the prices would be much better, many of the top-end processors are poor value and AM4 is indeed a better option for many regions. Shame that CF didn't perform better...

Also AFAIK the BIOS can be modded regardless of the motherboard model as long and it is in fact an American Megatrends one, it's just does require a little more work as you must hex edit the values by hand and that could also enable the option to overclock both CPU multipliers and RAM speed and timmings. Also, even if anyone can use regular DDR3 memory on these boards the main selling point of the platform is the compatibility with registered DIMMs, which could be cheaper as long as the user is able to get local deals of those for next to nothing. I'm pretty sure that the results of this video are a bit misleading towards the performance of the platform and should be at least revisited after the issues encountered are addressed. Best regards!

Overclocking the x79 cpus, had he been able to, would have shown pretty decent results. And even today the Intel x79 cpus are good for what they do (when overclocked to 4.4+ghz). yes other cpus performance is better, but is it necessary to get an enjoyable experience? No... I can say without a doubt that I don't have any reason to upgrade for the tasks im performing and the same goes for many others. With newer software and higher resolution games things are going to change of course. Heck I still have x58 motherboards that do great for the money (if you find good deals) at most tasks. Being better is one thing. Being necessary is another. At some point I'll upgrade. Maybe 2021... And at that point maybe I'll get a 9900k for $100.

Reason to upgrade right now from x79? No, as you said, they are still very competent performers.
Reason to buy an entire x79 (Mobo/CPU/RAM) setup off Ali or eBay? Absolutely not, the value just isn't there. And that's the point I was making in the video.

Loving it though. I'm actually building one of them this weekend. Edit: I went with the Xeon E5 2420 V2. Not very high clocks and not unlocked but it does have 6C/12T which I am gambling is a good trade considering more and more of the modern games are seemingly less frequency dependent and are becoming more multi-core dependent. Also, I got my Xeon for $18.

Hard to argue with this vid. I'm looking around because I'll have to upgrade my 10yo board at some point.
So, in 2016 I upgraded my 1366 Xeon 4 core to a Xeon W3690 6 core with an unlocked multi because price and the Gigabyte EX-58 Extreme has support for it. It's multiplier overclocked to 4.5 with a small bclk increase from 133-135. Works so well in 2018 (or was it 2017?) I bought a 1080ti.
Anyway, time is moving on, best start planning and this vid shows without any doubt when my next upgrade comes around it will be no more old tech, but I will keep my 1080 for now. My 1366 era tech has had a fabulous run.
    Great vid btw!

Almost 100K subs! 8) And happy 4th July!!! 8-) Re the CPU, I was a bit surprised you went for the 1620 v2 as most discussion around the 16xx XEONs concerns the 1650 v2. Many here are saying the 1620 v2 is a locked CPU, in which case maybe that's why the multi option didn't show up in the BIOS, ie. perhaps it would if it had been the 1650 v2 instead.
I suppose the upfront appeal of the 1620 v2 is that it's half the cost of the 1650 v2, but that cost advantage is wiped out if it's locked, whereas the 1650 v2 would extend it's value via being oc'd (most users seem to report 4.5GHz as typical, though whether that's achievable with a Chinese mbd I've no idea). What's more, at $62 for the 1620 v2, which is locked, the 2650 v2 is definitely the better buy at that price level ($72 for 8c/16t? Definitely better than the 1620 v2, especially with modern games and APIs moving ever further into better supporting many-core CPUs, and in a manner that makes IPC less and less relevant).
Overall though, with only 4c/8t, the value of the 1620 v2 is pretty poor, but I guess you'd been expecting to be able to offset that with an oc. The CPU does have higher stock clocks than many other XEON options for X79, but the lack of cores/threads is going to hurt it much more in many titles.
12:30 - GTA V favours NVIDIA cards anyway so that result doesn't surprise me, while CF support in general these days is pretty woeful. Btw, with a 780 Ti and the bonkers-cheap 2420 v2 ($18), I get at 1080p/Ultra an avg of 107.6fps, with min 40.3fps, 1% Low 42.9fps, 0.1% Low 33.9fps. That's a 2X higher average, but interesting that the .1% low is almost identical. The 2420 v2 has 6c/12t but much lower clocks; I found CPU usage wasn't really that high, peaking a bit above 45% during the car chase, but I noticed that only 8 threads were active, so the other 2 cores going to waste. I also noticed that sometimes the thread parking was not optimal, ie. 2 threads on one core while another core was idle, though weirdly changing the screen resolution seemed to force the 8 threads to shuffle around so that each core had at least one thread. GTA V is a strange engine, I had higher CPU usage with a 4GHz 2700K.
Btw Jeff, get your head round this oddity: at 1440p/MAX (I mean every slider maxed, so it's exceeding the GPU's 3GB VRAM), the 2420 v2 showed unsurprisingly horrid Lows (6 and 2) though it was at least playable early-2000s-style most of the time, with the benchmark giving just under 70fps avg (weird) while just normal play was 26fps inside the guy's house, 22fps out in the street (I'm sure a GPU with more VRAM would solve this, will test with an RX 580 later, I was just curious as to what would happen). However, the 2700K system fell flat on its arse! :D Even the benchmark only hit 3.9fps avg (I cancelled the test, it was chugging) with 3 to 3.5fps in/out of the player's house. Why might this be? My theory is that, just maybe, with all the VRAM thrashing likely going on, the XEON system running the GPU at PCIe 3.0 gave just enough extra bw to cope with the I/O load, while the 2700K system using PCIe 2.0 wasn't able to keep up (ASUS Maximus IV Extreme, so it can do 3.0 but only with IB CPUs). I certainly wasn't expecting a situation where the 2700K would barf compared to the 2420 v2. I hope to be able to confirm this by testing with a 4820K on an ASUS R4E, so it will also be 3.0. Most curious.
Sniper Elite 4 has gained a reputation for one of the most well optimised games of recent times. GN speaks favourably of it in every review.
Definitely a good deal on that RX 470D though; did you flash the BIOS back to a normal version?
14:40 - You're absolutely right if AMD's new CPUs have the effect one might expect on used 1st/2nd gen Ryzen pricing and the Chinese sellers don't respond. Presumably what will likely happen then is their sales will tail off as people realise Ryzen makes more sense and then they will have to drop prices.
Re return, well no, not with a 4c CPU. :D But it's a pity you didn't test with something more appealing like a 2650 v2. However, Ryzen combos certainly do have some advantages. The deciding factor is probably just geographical location, places where good used deals are not available. I wonder though whether for some it's also the fun factor, something different to mess about with, freak out one's friends at 1440p. I've certainly been taken aback at how well my bundle performs which only cost 125 UKP for the CPU, mbd, 16GB/1600 RAM and 6-heatpipe cooler.
As for viable use, assuming a more sensible CPU like the 2650 v2, then those who like a mix of gaming and productivity may find it quite appealing (if as mentioned they're in a region where Ryzen & other alternatives are not available or too expensive). I just wish people would stop touting ruddy Preimiere/Photoshop numbers as if those grud awful apps are the be-all & end-all of productivity metrics - there are so many other apps people use, especially free ones like GIMP, Handbrake, Blender, etc. Gaming while streaming is also an interesting use case for these CPUs, as GN showed when they compared the Ryzen 1700 to the 8700K.
Speaking of productivity, I've ordered a dual-socket X79 Chinese board to try out two 2650 v2s, should be a giggle. I suspect it'll probably suck vs. a single 2650 v2 for gaming (Windows tends to behave poorly for gaming with dual socket mbds), but it could be quite the budget charmer for productivity stuff. I've also ordered a PlexHD single-socket X79 for general testing, and bagged 96GB/1866 ECC/REG RAM for only 96 UKP from a UK seller.
    Down the road, I'll test the 2420 v2 with a 1080 Ti, because people keep asking about such pairings. :D And if the PlexHD does support SLI, I do have another... :}
Thanks for the excellent video! This whole XEON saga in recent months has been fascinating to observe. Intel must hate every second of it. :D

@@justaworkeryup636 The XEON scene has become a bit more muddled as of late with the equivalent of X99 chipset Aliexpress boards and relevant XEONs becoming more readily available, especially those that can be modded to run with an all-core oc (Tech Yes City has covered this). Also, some of the older XEONs have undergone some odd pricing changes, while it must be said that earlier Ryzen CPUs may make more sense now that AM4 boards can also be bought from Aliexpress. However, availability of used Ryzens varies a lot - not many where I am in the UK. Still, these XEONs continue to hold an absolute cost advantage; if one doesn't mind the power consumption and lack of newer features then they can certainly have merit. I have an Intel board that can overclock but the only overclockable Xeons are still pretty pricey and while the 1620 is pretty fast, it's lacking when it comes to core count. Is getting an overclocked CPU on this platform worth the compromise on core count or will a 3GHz plus CPU with 8+ plus cores with hyperthreading be a better option for the "long" run and better overall in value? I plan on pairing the CPU with my 780 ti.

Use case that still applies a year and a half later: DIY NAS servers with video capture and/or transcode ability. Except I would recommend X99 boards for this purpose, and V3 or V4 Xeons. But, most X99 boards have five full size PCIe slots, even if they are only wired for x8. That means you can put a full size Pascal card on with NVENC, a video capture card, and three drive controllers, either hardware RAID or just SATA controllers and do software RAID management. That will let you load up the 15 drive bays of a Rosewill RSV-L4500 style chasis with all of the drive control cards running at full speed, albeit with a X8 connection for the GPU, but 3.0 x8 is still plenty fast for pretty much anything besides a 3080 or 3090. And a Haswell or Broadwell Xeon will have plenty of muscle for encoding 1080P or 1440P with good quality if you don't want to do the NVENC route.
The only real competition for that kind of expansion is a Threadripper, which while having more total PCIe lanes and therefore more full x16 slots, SATA or SAS drive controllers typically are only x8 anyways, so you really only gain the extra bandwidth on the GPU, which doesn't really matter for this type of build. And a used Threadripper setup is going to run you around 400$ for the motherboard + CPU on eBay at a minimum with a lot of hunting, while the X99 setup will cost you around 200$ if you go as cheap as possible, 300$ if you want a more blinged mobo and CPU. My Asus X99 WS/IPMI was only 190$ shipped, and that is about as fancy as you can ask for. I got a 6800K for 80$, and a 2660 V4 for 120$ shipped, which are about as beefy of CPU's as you would want. The 6800K for lightly threaded workloads, the 2660 V4 for heavily threaded workloads. I guess a 6950X would be the only other real upgrade, but that's a waste of money, because now you're in Threadripper 1920X territory, which is a way better workstation CPU unless you have an application that can leverage the iGPU.
X99 platform isn't dead yet. It's good if you don't really care about the CPU and just really want a lot of expansion slots for cheap.

I believe the last fastest CPUs to formally support xp are Ivy Bridge architecture CPUs (even the last FX did not compete). So theoretically the X79 platform would be the option to build the ultimate native XP gaming machine.
OS: WinXP Pro 32bit (64 was commonly not supported or needed workarounds last I remember)
    CPU: 4960x or 1660v2
    RAM: 4x1gb DDR3-1866
    GPU: GTX Titan Black (sli)
My concern with the Chinese boards is finding appropriate XP drivers for the chipset and on-board integrated components.

With the Chinese Xeon boards you are probably better off with one of their combo deals, thanks to Phil testing my favorite game on it I'm gonna for the E2630V2 with board and 16Gb of RAM for just $99, this will still leave enough in my budget for an RX580, new 600w PSU, and a nice case to put it all in for around $300 shipped. Ryzen would be nice but there is simply no way in hell I'm gonna get a full Ryzen build with an RX580 for that price, not without seriously gimping on the CPU with something like an Athlon.

There's so many reviews of these boards on youtube but every one them examines the value of them from a game platform perspective in comparison to what's available today. There's still some of us that use desktop style PC's for non game use. What attracts me to this platform is the core count, ECC memory support, and number of PCI-e 3.0 lanes. My current most used system (although I have another) is a low spec 1150 H87 with an 8 port HBA in the 16x slot with currently 6x3TB drives and of course the 1x slot is blocked. Multiple ssd's in raid 0 as a scratch disk on the native sata motherboard ports. Of course I'm relying totally on the IGP for graphics. I'd like to build some sort of file server using freenas and zfs and perhaps 10GbE network and separate all this overcrowded mess and get my storage drives away from potential hazards of everyday usage activities etc. Any thoughts appreciated.

    Another comparison... Ryzen 5 3600 (3.6 GHz 6core 12 threads) =$263 AU, while the same money will get a Xeon E5 2695 V3 (2.2GHz 14 core 28 threads)

Nice video, just want to correct the pricing. Just checked and 16gb(4x4GB for quad channel) + e5 2689 + x79 board is $164 not $250, so quite a bit of difference there. An R5 1600 + mobo + 16GB of 3000MHz would cost close to double, so if you are on a budget I'd say these xeons(at least the E5 2689) will be good for another 2-3 years and that's if you buy it right now. I'm pretty sure that in 6 months or this time next year we will see combo's like the R5 2600+mobo+16GB 3000MHz for $250 or lower and I'm talking new obviously. A b350/450 board starts at about 70 to 80 €, r5 2600 lies at around 130 bucks. A nice 32 GB DDR 4 costs around 110 €. If you add things up, i save a great chunk of money buying this build. Regarding over all performance the ryzen is nearly a third more powerful than the xeon but the the overall savings of 55% are right on the edge. I agree with you, the next time i build such a system and the prices are staying in that range, it will be not worth it. Right now its more or less preference and budget driven.

I agree. As far as I know there are only a few deals right now which truly stomp ryzen:
    - X58/X79 chips IF you already own the motherboard. Then the value is insane.
    - 1366 / 2011 used dual socket systems. If you need many cores, there are good deals to be had. For example I bought a used supermicro dual socket system for 70€. Including the PSU. CPUs for those cost next to nothing (15$ a pop for a good Hex core), as well as RAM (you can use small sticks as the boards support up to 18 sticks, most of them 12 sticks).
For a media encoder this works wonder. Only issue: mine is a custom formfactor board in a very LOUD 1HE server case. However I will look into case-modding an EATX case

There are no voltage adjustments, so it depends on the cpu, I had a 1650v2 oc'd to 4.1, replaced it with a 1680v2 and it wouldn't accept an overclock even tho it was unlocked.

I'm using the Kllisre X79 motherboard with a Xeon E5 2650 V2 and 32GB of 1600MHz DDR3 ECC REG memory overclocked to 1866 (worked for me) for about $200. I'm using this machine mostly with handbrake to re-encode video and move the process off of my main machine, not for gaming. It's not quite as fast, but it frees up my main machine so I can do other things and not slow down the re-encoding process. Might upgrade the CPU for more cores and clock speed to accelerate the process.

Do you have recommendation for those russian websites? I'm thinking of modding my lga1356 Klissre motherboard.

Just bought this mobo (v1.41) for £56 + E5-2690v2 for £10 + 64GB of reg server ram for £18. Other parts I had laying about doing nothing. Why? A cheap Proxmox 8 build, with 10 cores/20 threads and a ton of memory for VM's and containers.

Awesome detailed vid. I love the x79 platform as well but coming from different angle. I bought a i7-3960x with 32gb of ram. I think the sandy bridge, sandy bridge e and ivy bridge platforms are only worth while if you can overclock them past 4ghz.
However Ryzen is making to hard to make it worth while to build from scratch with these older platform.
You mentioned the faster ddr4. Do you think 2133mhz ddr3 working in quad channel could beat mid range ddr4 working in dual channel ?

Ive tried this with 2 RX 580s. It actually worked perfectly, but SO few games actually support crossfire :'( would probably make for a great workstation though

I have considered one of those boards for my FreeNAS machine. I'm currently running a Pentium G4400 with 16GB, but having more cores and threads available for jails or VMs along with really cheap ECC memory seems kind of compelling. Would you do it?

I ran FreeNAS on a very similar board for a couple years, and that's likely where this one will end up as well. 32GB REG-ECC is super cheap. Check out the E5-2650. 8c/16t, and you can get it as low as $25 on eBay if you shop around.

The only use case I can think of for an old Xeon over a first gen Ryzen is a Hackintosh but that's possible on AMD now too through virtualisation I believe.

You should do one of those dual socket 2011 boards, and stick crossfire on it. That would certainly be interesting to see. You could go with like the Xeon E5-2697 v2 12 core chips and have a 24 core 48 thread computer. Combined with like 590s or the 5500 cards in crossfire and it would be an absolute monster.

I love your builds. I actually am going to replace my current Chinese x79 motherboard with one of these. Reason being, it matches my purple green and black build better. Also because the 4 extra sata ports do not work on mine. Ive done everything I can think to get my drives to work on them but nothing works. Only the 2 6gb sata ports work.
