If Samsung hadn't discontinued their professional camera line, they could have outshined everyone. They were introducing groundbreaking ideas that outpaced the competition, but then they abruptly halted. It felt like they stopped because the market was too simple to tackle. The Samsung Galaxy NX camera and NX1 were both revolutionary during their time. They could easily revive the Samsung Galaxy NX camera, making it even better. Simply updating the software and incorporating a new UI would make it a hit on the internet.

The nx1 was unreal- such a shame they didn't stay in the game

    • @JimIBobIJones

It was doomed from the start, their business plan was slapdash and pretty flawed.
They started from scratch, their R&D cost was too high and they were always having to play catch-up. They also didn't have any experience or expertise in the other parts of the camera (such as autofocus, colour science, etc.) and pursued partnerships rather than acquiring the companies to vertically integrate their supply chain. T
E.g. their main partner early on was Pentax, and you had co-developed pro level cameras which were internally identical, with minor external differences and different branding. This meant that people bought the Pentax (which was an extablished brand) over the Samsung. Piggybacking of Pentax also meant that early Samsung cameras using the Pentax mount did not have compatibility with lenses of later proprietary models, which is also a massive turn-off.
They ended up competing with these partners who had more cachet in the camera space. This also meant when they went complete independent in the 2010s they had massive skill and expertise gaps which their competition did not have.
Basically they did everything opposite to Sony in the Mirrorless space and failed where Sony succeeded. Sony bought Minolta and integrated decades of specialist expertise and experience. This meant that when they "mainstreamed" Mirrorless tech, their products were much more polished and complete compared to Samsung. E.g. both companies' first major full frame mirrorless - launched at about the same time - The Nx1 on paper had better specs than the A7, but in practice was much less polished and showed the lack of experience working with professional camera kit: the autofocus was unreliable, the manual focus wasn't intuitive and awkward to use. The biggest issue IMHO was that Samsung didn't have a lot of experience making lenses which led to much poorer quality pictures despite the superior sensor.
Were these issues Samsung could have solved? Probably if they threw enough money at it. But given that the camera department was haemorrhaging money and at the same time their mobile sales were through the roof, they probably made the right choice in killing the NX.

The Samsung NX series should have stayed alive a lot longer than it was, it was a shame that they dumped the entire camera division for no apparent reason. And for us people who invested in the NX series, we were left out in the wind with no information why.

The reason for dumping the camera division most likely was that they never got a decent market share. Not that surprising since the cameras was OK, but not outstanding compared to other established brands. The exception was the NX1 which was excellent but never got the chance to be a huge seller as it came out just before Samsung gave up on the camera business. Maybe they did the right thing as the digital camera market collapsed around that time.

I've wanted one for a while. My favorite camera is my Samsung NX3000. I use it pretty regularly, got it in 2017. I've tried to get an NX Mini for a long time, they used to go for only about $100-150 but was never able to justify it. Nowadays I can't even justify it since camera reviews shot the price up 5x (dang it, MarkusPix...).
The trick is not using Samsung's first party lenses though. Maybe the 30mm. The 16mm 2.4 prime isn't too great. It's great for vintage lenses though, the Mini should be excellent for C-mount lenses too.

I got that NX Mini in 2019 for about $150 US dollars, it's super uncommon but it's wonderful, the only cons are its tiny sensor and its lack of lenses. I don't remember if it has manual lenses or adapters out there. It was a point and shoot camera but with interchangeable lenses.

As a long time nx-mini owner, I absolutely adored this camera. I used it primarily for inventory photography at work taking around 1,700 to 2,200 photos a day. The contrast detect while slow was accurate and rarely let me down. The only real ussues I had were the low light performance and occasional software glitches that had me taking out the battery from time to time. However for a camera that actually fits in your pocket, I loved it.
I have since sold my mini and upgraded to the lumix lx-10 as my pocket camera and the lumix s5 as my work horse, but the nx-mini will always hold a special place in my heart. Without that camera I wouldn't be doing photography for a living. It's also the only camera I've sold at a profit. Those little buggers hold their value

Funny you mention the Nikon 1 series in here. I actually bought a Nikon 1 V1 even AFTER reading about how horrible the series failed because of a few reasons. Got mine for dirt cheap, completely understood that most of the lenses for it are almost impossible to find in working conditions, was excited for the built-in EVF, was super small, and it actually uses the same batteries as my D810 I was already shooting with. It'll just be a permanently-adapted system, and I'm totally fine with that.
I'll take the challenge when I can get a stellar price.

Battery life is mind boggling good for a camera this size.

Didn't go for it , and I am glad I didn't because it was new, so full price for what is now a dead system would have been a waste, but now used for a few bucks for the fun of it , why not..

Honestly, where the hell are these cameras in 2024. I would kill for a modern super portable camera like this with even the punching power of an older a6000 series. I'm convinced part of the reason people love the Fuji X100 series so much isn't just the aesthetics (though that's a big part) it's the small camera that you can take with you anywhere without lugging multiple big lenses, a strap, and just all the things that come with a modern camera system.

Simple physics.

The optimal method for assessing the performance of the devices involves capturing an image of the identical scene in Raw format and subsequently printing it out in A3 size. I employed a Leica Q3, a Samsung Fold 5, and an Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max, all set to capture images in Raw format. After evaluating the printed results, the Samsung Fold 5 emerged as the superior device.
    Explanation:
    - "The only way to test the devices is to take a shot at the same scene in Raw format and print it out in A3 format": This means that the most effective way to compare the devices is to capture an image of the same scene using all of them in Raw format and then print these images in A3 size for evaluation.
    - "I used a Leica Q3, a Samsung Fold 5, and Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max all in Raw format": This indicates the devices utilized for the test, with each set to capture images in Raw format to ensure consistency in the assessment.
    - "The winner is Samsung Fold 5": This statement concludes the evaluation, declaring the Samsung Fold 5 as the best performer among the tested devices based on the printed results.
No wonder Samsung do away with the camera division as the Camera function in the mobile are so much better.

I used to work as a sales rep for Nikon in London, back when these were being released. They were always the odd ones out - interesting novelty items, some good idea here and there, rather lousy build quality (especially the lenses). All of us reps felt quite safe, with mirrorless not yet being the zeitgeist, and DSLRs outperforming most other things out there. And the colours, and over sharpening of the photos in these meant they weren’t particularly popular even with just the general staff, nor customers.
The NX1 hit different - it still had some remnants of over processing in the files, but other than that it was modern, fast, well built. We all started paying attention when that hit the shelves - it could’ve been a turning point; but alas, it was too late, and Samsung must have caught on to Sony becoming the one giant in that space, and wasted too much money on the range, and let go. Shame, really.

What a shame they didn't produce more lenses for it.

I never understood why companies made 1 inch interchangeable lens camera's, while you could get something smaller like the Sony RX100 with the same sensor size, IBIS and a convenient 10,4 - 37,1mm F/1.8 - 4.9 zoom lens built in.

8:29 That was an issue with that cheap lens, not the gm1 itself.

That's not true. Lenses can't create digital noise, only sensor gain does that, or editing afterwards. The ISO used for that example photo I showed was 200. It was absolutely caused by the camera/RAW file as it was present in every shot I took whenever I lifted the shadows in Lightroom.

Ok, hear me out as my ADHD and right brain hemisphere goes into overdrive. Imagine, a developer flipping $hit and quitting Samsung and later releasing a “starter pack hack” similar to Magic Lantern.
    Ok, I’ll see myself out.

If this camera or the Nikon 1 series had continued, they would have adopted some kind of computational photography like smartphones now. Small fast sensor, no mechanical shutter, very fast AF for its time....... It would have evolved in to stacked raw files at least. A shame really.

Compared to Sony NEX 3N : almost as small. Lenses are bigger though, except for a few pancakes. And the Sony is a bit heavier.

Cool. This camera actually has a pretty big following but they are way overpriced on Ebay for what they are and the quality is crap to be honest. The smartphone in your pocket takes much better quality photos. Way better options from Olympus and Nikon for similar cameras and a better selection of lenses.

The limitation: back then you couldn't do video in a body this small.
the first generation of tiny mirrorless sadly couldn't 1080p and it's really down to that. We''d be loving them still to this day if they could record video

I'm looking for a nice camera to replace my crappy point and shoot. SO many choices it's confusing. I want one to last the rest of my life. I am mostly interested in a good sensor that will take shots in less than favorable conditions without blur.

I had one. It was good but was fatally flawed as Samsung built in raw noise reduction which was very unsubtle and heavy handed. Such a shame.
