Is it possible that in that opening D chord hes muting the e string and not playing the F sharp, but playing what i call dirty D ... a,d,a,d or just d,a,d. I just looked how i hold it and it does look like im making a bar but im not.
Always great to see The Kinks get some recognition. I wonder what their reputation would be like had they not been banned from performing in the US in the mid sixties...
They played this song in the US, on SNL. *They had a 4 year ban. 65-69, yet some bands were still having trouble cracking the US. I think they would’ve had hits at first, then flopped with the concept stuff. The US was open to them as of 1970, and they were very successful, especially touring this album.
@@CorbCorbin but think about what happened in popular music during those 4 years. Yikes! If you’d asked me to pick the 4 year period with the most incredible changes in popular music, I probably would pick 1965-1969. The Doors and Jefferson Airplane formed in 1965. Santana in 1966 and the Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1966. In 1967, the Monterey Pop Festival launched Janis Joplin’s career, and that concert had such an eclectic mix of performers and performances. Everything from the Mommas and Papas to The Who and Jimi with seriously hard rock. By 1969 we were ready for Woodstock. I saw the Kinks live twice - once in London 1980 and again on the Low Budget tour in the US. They were so much fun in concert!
For those of you playing close attention, he doesn't mention that in the second bridge on the "I got down on my knees" part, the chord progression changes to E, G#m, C#m. You're welcome.
Great song choice and well explained lesson. You're right, the bridge is tough for a beginner so I would suggest playing the A on the fifth fret, then drop to the C#m (4th fret) to the B (7th fret). Holding basically the same chord shape throughout.
Great lesson Thom. I saw them play this live at Brunel University back in the 1970s. Ray Davies drank a whole bottle of Bell's whisky during the set! When my friend Lola got married I learned to play the song from a Kinks songbook and played it at her wedding. She was highly amused until she figured out the words!
I've known this song for decades, so no need for the lesson. But I had to chime in and say that Taylor sounds KILLER! It's often hard to have that translate over a RUclips video, but you have it totally dialed in. Cheers!
I love that much of your content caters to us older folk. Or at least lovers of the earlier rock music. And how the hell are you so talented. Playing McCartney and all his instruments.
Great presentations and lesson. So nice to see the editing and bringing the band vid in and your lessons editing multi camera. a lot of work to put it together (I know the efforts for that).....Bravo and thanks! just a note.....when needed, the embellishments are the most needed for many learners, nice. I wish I had more Rolling Stones embellishments. Love that Taylor sound!
Great lesson and great sound from the Taylor. I've been playing this song a lot lately because I've been having a "Gibson" problem with the strings binding in the nut. I hate it when the top E string is perfect in the E shape but is sharp at fret 2 in the D shape. Lots of polishing has worked magic. I'm putting off replacing the nut but how Gibson shipped it so badly cut is beyond me.
HI, great lesson, there are so many songs by the Kinks worth teaching, the Beatles were great but don't underestimate the fact that they stopped touring unlike other groups, not so easy touring and devote time to song writing
As usual, that was great Thom! Definitely one of my favorite Kinks tunes. BTW, are you still working on my ZZ Top recommendation? Anyway, hope that you & your little one are doing well. 👍👍🎸🎸
Friday s becoming the best day of my weeks. Great song, relatively easy to play. Thanks for your precious advice. PS : See my friends is my preferred one from the Kinks 😏
It’s funny because in that video you can tell they’re not really playing the instruments maybe they’re singing live but they certainly aren’t playing live it’s too bad too because the little licks that the guitar player is doing behind Ray Davies on the album are spectacular and I wish you profiled those far more interesting licks than the acoustic part
Thom, one piece of random feedback: I much prefer when your video thumbnails feature an image of yourself in it (as opposed to the sole image of the highlighted artist). When I'm looking at my subscription page, it makes it much easier to identify that any particular video is indeed a Guitar Pilgrim video.
That C could also be a Daydream C right? Yeah I agree with comment below that your showing a video and then continuing with your lesson is very instructive!
Holey Moley! Why are there no comments x 1 year. This is an excellent video! Great song!! Far Better than average guitar lesson The Kinks are so underappreciated!!! Do you folks fear "Lola" ? I would have, like Ray, feared Lola, but I am old now and secure. So is he. "Lola" helps us all to accept diverisity. (admittedly, it was a mind-fuck at the time) 😺😸😺😸😺😸🏳🌈🏳🌈

I love this song too!
Thank you, for you playing and enthusiasm.

Great! How about the bass

why were they banned? don't know that story and I'm an old fart.

You are my best teacher👍
You sir are a truly awesome guitarist. The range of songs you can play to the very highest of standards is nothing short of mindblowing.

Sounds great!
First class lesson. Great delivery. Born teacher. 👍

A really classic song,Top drawer, and excellent lesson, you are Good Sham as we say in Tuam, Co Galway, home of the legendary Saw Doctors
Like the way y are instructing..regards frpom the netherlands..especially lola..😂
instructing
Thank you, that's a great song, and its awesome, in flamenco guitar you do A allways with only your Index, so you can use the resto for arrangements.
One of my top 5 RUclips channels. Always great content and always a joy listening. Keep it up!
The sound of that guitar is beautiful A Taylor?
That guitar deserves a truss rod cover.
Thank you. Very concise and well explained.
Great story in this song
Very nice song, and you teach very well sir!
Cool song lesson! Practice makes habit.
Timely. One I wanted learn for a while. Great post!
amazing acoustic guiter lesson from you.loved to play.🔊🎸🎵🎶.
Love your blog. It would be nice to have your input on amp settings to get similar sounds.

The kinks are awesome so many jams
You Really Got Me Now!
Great song from back in the day!
Excellent lesson! In the intro try changing from C to D a half beat later.
Great lesson, thanks!! Love your guitar, too.
HI, great lesson, there are so many songs by the Kinks worth teaching, the Beatles were great but don't underestimate the fact that they stopped touring unlike other groups, not so easy touring and devote time to song writing
Nice. How about Waterloo Sunset! Dave Davies' parts are weirdly brilliant.
Made me log in and subscribe! Thanks 😉
Merci for this. You bring joy to playing these songs. I don't play the guitar, but love your videos.
Wow! So crazy! I decided to revisit and clean this classic strummer. Nice lesson! I like the way you teach. Enjoyed the John Denver one too
you have a very natural style of teaching, nice work sir!
Love this song😎❤💖 My Mom "LOLA" and my sister... también 😎🤣 Genial video! Come on pilgrim!
I'm glad to see you teach this one, good job , thanks!
enjoying learning this but tab in bar 10 rif eems to differ from the video. Can anyone help me out ?
Nice job on the lesson. The guy that wrote this song is Ray Davies, not Davis. Sorry for the mute point.
Great tutorial
As usual, that was great Thom! Definitely one of my favorite Kinks tunes. BTW, are you still working on my ZZ Top recommendation? Anyway, hope that you & your little one are doing well. 👍👍🎸🎸
Nice sounding guitar.
This was a great breakdown man! Have you thought about doing a breakdown video for the song “Jet” by Wings? The bridge in that song is pretty rad.
Yes that's a great suggestion!

love it
Great job.
You should do Magic Sam's boogie next
How do you recommend to play the A chord! You play it different. Some people play D different! Not me but anyway...
And You guys thought Kurt Cobain came up with those funky glasses..

Great fun to play. Thanks!
Thank you mate, good lesson
Dang , you pick great bands
Hi. Love your channel but one question, totally irrelevant but why do you remove the truss rod cover?
Long story, I basically lost it
Very good explanation. Like!
Great lesson, thanks very much
Excellent!
Hey GP. Another great analysis. Just curious. We have the same Taylor (814ce). What stings do you use? They sound great!
I use d'addarrio strings
@@GuitarPilgrim Thanks. But what gauge? 13s?
Sounds like 12s
Holey Moley!

I would have, like Ray, feared Lola, but I am old now and secure. So is he.

😺😸😺😸😺😸🏳🌈🏳🌈
Not only do you make it look easy, you also inspire, then when I try, omg what a disappointment
Leuke video’s Pilgrim! Respect 🙏
Genial
Thanks, but on the first bridge I hear a minor A on the last bar: "Say hey little boy won't you come with me ?"
Can you do “Naive” by The Kooks ?? Thanks!!
No
It's Am, not A7. Ray told me that 😃🎸
Amazing, I would give anything to be able to play the guitar, but I don’t have a musical bone in my body.😢
Excellent ❤
I saw Ray Davies perform at Rochester castle around 2008, utterly brilliant. Lost none of his charisma.
I call it "The Full C chord"
Is it 'legal' to play this one anymore? 🤣
yes
his D is barred because he's also hitting the F# bass note
The guitar is mimicking a banjo.
used to play it until I understood the text ...
yes
