So, maybe a controversial opinion on my behalf: I feel like the show, and the franchise as a whole, could have been something more. Like, bigger in scale or, at least, a little more mature as seasons went by, discussing even harsher themes than those that appeared in it: like death (literal, not implied), PTSD, war, familiar abuse, drugs consumption, corruption within the government, crimes, etc.
The same goes for some characters: Starlight, Celestia and Luna, Scootaloo, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon, Gallus and Gilda, Thorax, Zecora, Lyra and Bon-Bon (*coff coff* Sweetie Drops *coff coff*). We could have had a massive repertoire of incredible and wholesomely touching moments and episodes, maybe even entire arcs that didn't revolve on major threats or villains, just people struggling with life and past actions.
And then, there's the villains... basically the same as any other character mentioned above. I mean, the comics do help characterizing them more and making deeper, more touching stories at times, but I don't feel like a comic should literally do the job sometimes (sometimes, not *every time, calm down haters and purists), but instead complement on what is set. Like, a whole frickin' arc of Celestia having fallen in love with a alternate dimension Sombra? Fuck, I would have made a movie out of that, not a comic!
But anyway... I still like the show, but it's because of these things, and some more, that I prefer way more what the fandom has to offer rather than the former.

People who say "Fluttershy had to learn the same lesson over and over again" clearly don't understand how Anxiety works. Social Anxiety (which is what it seems like Fluttershy has) cannot be cured by one lesson. Overcoming anxiety takes time.

I’m sure someone has said this, but absolutely Zephyr and RD should not get together. All other ships aside, they won’t be a good pair. Not only does Zephyr constantly trample all over RD’s boundaries, but he would hold RD back. As shown in his episodes, he’s not all too interested in actually pushing himself. This could mean he wouldn’t lift RD up and help her push herself to achieve her goals. Zephyr just isn’t a good match for RD.
With Fluttershy not learning, she is. Clearly that person doesn’t have to deal with anxiety nor have they had to basically change a core part of their person. It takes a lot of work and baby steps to do just that. Fluttershy has been shy her entire life. It’s the main memorable part of who she is. It won’t take one time to change such a big part of herself.

Fluttershy doesn’t really have lessons, it’s just more a mental struggle for her. Her character is literally kindness itself (so friendship totally checks out), and her development is getting over her anxiety. That’s why it takes so long and is “her only lesson”. Just because it actually isn’t really a lesson to begin with. Anxiety can’t be cured by learning how to be a better friend. Trust me.

Trixie is my favorite. In the later episodes her flaw is really she is just dumb. My friendship is a lot like her, just playful banter. Like in No Second Prances, her worst moment was her trying to one up Twilight, but she still shows genuine kindess and remorse in the episode too. In the finale she picked up that Starlight was feelinf overwhelmed and scared so she helped their exit and then helped with her confidence later. And something i focused on with trixie, when discord called her a "self absorbed, below average, illusionist" she got upset at the self absorbed part, not the thing she takes pride in. All Bottled Up she's dumb, she didn't realize what she was saying and how it affected Starlight until Starlight infected 3 ponies. Road to Friendship she was quick to anger but quick to end it, and then Starlight traded away her house basically. Student Council, Starlight was ignoring her friends for her work, and that work being for pretty minor things. The vice headmare stuff, she is stupid, but she genuinely thought Starlight wanted her help. She thought she was doing good and acceoted when Starlight said it wasn't. I know this is a long comment, but while Trixie annoyed people, she wasn't a bad person, she just made bad choices. In all of her episodes she wasn't a bad person, just a loud mouth

I think Twilight's castle is the worst design in the show if we're talking about landmarks. I can make a whole list on what's wrong with it, but in short, it's very edgy and sharp (nothing like Twilight), and I much preferred Golden Oaks Library as Twilight's home.

    Unpopular opinion:
I sided with Twilight in the movie. Sure she was pretty rude to Pinkie Pie but I don't blame her. Equestria was taken over by villains that were searching for her since she was the last alicorn and her friends didn't take it as serious as they should have. They were holding musical numbers while Twilight feared for her life. I just wish Pinkie would have apologized to her more. I get it, just like how Fluttershy will never not be shy, Pinkie will never not be silly. Even in serious situations but I just wish they would at least treat it as a flaw.

    • @aiuwapi
      @aiuwapi Год назад +258

Wait that's an unpopular opinion ? Were we not suposed to be siding with her ?
She wasn't rude to Pinkie, took her frustation out on her, which is just a bad and Pinkie didn't deserve it, Twilight's words were cruel but this all could've been avoided had they treated her right in the first place, they were the one not acting how friends should, they kept on ignoring her, failed to recognise she was under some serious stress and therefore couldn't bring her the reassurance she clearly needed, plus it's not the first time Twilight is shown to go beresrk when having to deal with too much (Lesson Zero being the best example of this) and they kept on making the task of saving the world much harder for her, even putting all of them (but mostly her since she was the one being tracked down) at hige risk (ahem, the rainboom) only worsening her frustation and anxiety, while what she said wasn't right, it's understandable why she would snap like that. I don't really remmeber if they apologise to her when they make up but they definity should have.
Overall there are some problems with the way they portray Pinkie in later seasons, somethings making her a bit too... selfish ? Like she's constantly hurting others because she is as oblivious as can be and when she gets told to stop just starts mopping around until someone picks her up and does all the work of cheering her up, she was much more likable in earlier seasons imo

@@aiuwapiI do see where you're coming from, but I for one am still, I guess you could say impartial. Or neutral.
I mean, think about their brief confrontation there.
Pinkie: "You didn't really want us to show her the best time ever. You just wanted us to distract her!"
Twilight: "I would never have done it, but this isn't Equestria. We can't just dance around with con-artists, make rainbooms in the sky and expect everything to work out. It's not enough. We're not enough."
Pinkie: "No, Twilight. WE stuck together, WE were gonna get the help we needed. The only thing that stopped us was you."
Twilight: "Well, I'm doing the best I can. It's all on me. I'M the one Tempest wants, I'M the last princess."
Pinkie: "You're also the only one who doesn't tryst her friends."
Twilight: "Well, maybe I would've been better off without friends like YOU!"
Like I said, I understand where you're coming from in regards to Twilight. And you were right, she was anxious about the whole 'Tempest is coming for me' situation, but she didn't need to take it out on Pinkie.
However, I believe Pinkie also had a point.
Take the pirates' ship for example.
Dash makes a rainboom and flies around the ship, which does alert Tempest to their location, and they hide below deck.
Twilight says "we have to get off this ship before they tell Tempest we're here".
And Dash responds "we helped them get their MOJO back. They're not gonna give us up."
Though they didn't know what was going on above them, Dash turned out to be right, because we see the pirates not telling Tempest anything in regards to the ponies.
But Twilight doesn't seem to trust Dash's words as she still finds a way to get off the ship.
It kinda relates to what Celestia told her at the beginning.
"You are the Princess of Friendship. You already have all the magic you need."
It may have been referring specifically to the Friendship Festival, but I think it could be applied to the rest of the film.
So things probably would've worked out if Twilight had actually trusted her friends.
Her suspision of Capper did turn out to be justified, but with both the pirates and the hippogriffs, things would've been okay if she'd actually trusted them and her friends.
It also comes down to what she said toward the end.
"Friendship didn't fail me. I failed friendship."
So Celestia tells her, at the start, that her friends is all she needs to succeed, but because of the whole Tempest situation, she's basically refusing to see that.
(sorry if that seems a little confusing, I put it the best way I could)

I think Chrysalis is one of the most consistent villains in the series since her motives are understandable: she acts based on her survival and her subjects and her rejection to the idea of reforming is also understandable since she felt totally betrayed by the ones she dedicated her life to feed and protect.
    Also, great video!

    • @Doomzdeh
      @Doomzdeh Год назад +69

That idea or characterization falls apart completely when you realize that Chrysalis wasn’t abandoned by her Hive; she abandoned them. None of them ran her off or rejected her at all in the Season 6 Finale. In fact, they only followed Thorax because Chrysalis openly said that she’d rather they always feel starving just because she couldn’t let go of her grudge on the Ponies.
Chrysalis, at the end of the day, didn’t care about her Hive or their well-being. She only cared about herself and her feelings of pride. And that’s why she is a pretty bad villain, as she is pathetic without her followers and she ruined their plan in Season 2 (if she could’ve just acted a bit more like Cadance, Twilight wouldn’t have suspected anything).

What I mean by that is he doesn't give the changelings any unique identities tied to their past and old traditions that maybe weren't downright horrible, and instead the changelings basically have bastardized pony traditions. Take a look at Ocellus's Hearth'sWarming segment, you'll see what I mean.

    Here are my hot takes:
    1. The way people paired the gen5 gang to gen 4 elements was wrong!
    * Izzy is not laughther just because she has a high pitch voice and energetic / fun loving attitude like Pinkie = she's generocity! She loves creating stuff for her friends and community, giving eveyrything she has, she wants to share everything = her culture, her creations and her time with friends.
    * Pipp is not generocity, just because she's "fabulous icon" like Rarity. SHE is laughter! She is making everything she can to brighter her followers day, makes music so people can share the joy of it. She is trying to always brighthen up everyone's day, especially her fans.
    * Zipp is not loyalty, just because she is a sporty pegasus like Rainbow Dash (like seriously, she abandoned her kingdom and mother in a blink of an eye) she's honesty! It was eating her up from inside that her family lied to the subjects, she had her own strong morals and stayed by them, believing they should never decieve their subjects.
    * Hitch is not kindness just because he talks to animals like Fluttershy (jut look how he treated his "best friend" in the movie, na-ah) he's loyalty! He is loyal to his duties and to his childhood friend even when it was really hard and when everypony else in the town turned against her and told him to do the same for his own benefit. He abandoned his mission because he believed in Sunny and his new friends. He is loyal to the town and it's citizens that he promised to serve. The only part that wouldn't fit is his treatment and abandonment of Sprout but let's be honest - the writesr just hate my Red boy and don't want to write him or use in clever ways... eh...
    * Sunny was magic, sure, because hse became the alicorn and brought it back but what motivated her throughout the entire adventure was her kindness and the kindness she believed everypony should share and give to oneanother. She is preaching kindness left and right, so maybe it should be Misty who is magic? Don't know, this is where it falls apart a bit... BUT YOU GET MY POINT, RIGHT?

      3. Zipp characterization took an awfull turn into a completly wrong direction after the movie = in the movie she was a 100% leader type, she was strong, confident in her beliefs and wanted to make good changes (kinda like Sunny) but in the series? She's just another "I'm a tomboy mum, not like the other princesses, I hate royal duties" character, that we've seen 1000 times.

I think that anyone who thinks that Zephyr Breeze and Rainbow Dash should be a thing fail to realize exactly HOW Zephyr would rub her in ALL the wrong ways. Rainbow Dash is highly competitive, a go getter, a self-motivated, self-starting mare. Zephyr Breeze is a lazy, featherbrained colt (not stallion) with high aspirations but absolutely no motivation. If they were EVER to attempt any sort of real relationship, it would be so grating in Dash's nerves that she would leave Zephyr in the dust.
She would probably have a better relationship with one of her fillyhood bullies than with Zephyr.

I think each princess represents a different type of relationship. As for me, to this day I think we should've gotten one season finale or season premiere where Spike was an antagonist or THE antagonist. He was treated pretty unfairly many times without really addressing it, even making it out to a joke. Hell, if Equestria Girls is anything to go by, the universe thinks of him as Twilight's pet, not brother.
Him as an antagonist would've worked similarly to Starlight, but instead of making friends with a stranger, the main group would've have had to work together to make amends with a close friend that they took for granted and treated poorly without realizing it. That would've been pretty good imo.

Overall an interesting idea, but not one that I could see actually being executed well.
I do agree that Spike definitely should have had at least some conflicts with the Mane Six over how he was treated. Heck, Twilight essentially kept him as an unpaid slave! I know they sometimes hinted that he was like a son or brother to her, but she never sent him to school or really spent any quality time with him at all. She just kinda had him take notes and clean her home all the time.

If you can forgive Discord, you sure as hell can forgive Cozy.
For Discord, let's go season by season:
Season 1: He wasn't there quite yet
Season 2: Recognized as a villain, and imprisoned as stone. This was not the first time he did this, so it makes sense
Season 3: Was seen as "reformed"
Season 4-8: Was an absolute pain in the ass to everyone around him, got no punishment, and was seen as reformed
Season 9: LIterally the last season of the show, and with all the "progress" Discord (or should I say Grogar) made, he reset it!
    Cozy, on the other hoof:
Season 1-7: Wasn't present. We don't know where she was at the time. Living on the streets? Living with a happy family? Foster care? We don't know
Season 8: She was seen as "good", but it was all a caricature. In the Finale she was sent to literal hell as a *nine year old*
Season 9: Evil. Got the same punishment as Discord, but because of the Finale, we know she was kept in stone.
Discord, as the Lord of Chaos, was given multiple chances to redeem himself. The only thing he did was lower the bar of how far he would go. Cozy, as a third grader, was never given a single chance to be reformed. We don't know how she is like as an actually good person. The "good" Cozy we saw was a caricature.

Starlight glimmer inslaved an entire town and stole their cutie marks and later she decided to reset the timeline, after her defeat she was given a chance.
Discord is the lord of choas and he......caused choas in Equestria twice, but was given a chance to reform.
Tempest worked with the storm king and invaded Canterlot and chased the Main 6 outside of Equestria, but was given a chance when she had a change of heart
      BUT COZY GLOW.
She tricked everyone and tried to banish magic to become the 'empress' (which I really don't see working well)
APPERANTLY THAT IS UNFORGIVABLE AND SHE GETS SENT TO HELL EVEN IF SHE IS A CHILD.

I've got a controversial take: while the original designs for the Changelings are still really cool, I enjoy the new ones as well! Most real bugs are really colorful (one of my favorites being the rosy maple moth), and they have lots of variations that're really fun to draw - some have that odd translucent fin where a pony's mane would be, some have antlers, they've got all sorts of gradients, their horns sometimes have an extra point, etc.!
Plus, they make sense thematically - Thorax freed them from Chrysalis, who treated them all as replacable drones with no individuality, and their new forms represent their newfound freedom of expression really well (like the head of the Feelings Forum said in S7 E17, "You can be anything you want to be. Be blue one day and purple the next. Be both on the same day!"). As someone who's genderfluid, I can really relate to that, hence why my own OC is a Changeling.

I think AJ and Rainbow should have each others elements. Rainbowdash has been shown several times to say her honest opinion and then learn or see how it hurt people around her. AJ is more about loyalty because a lot of her character is about being a part of the Apple Family (see how she got her cutie mark). AJ is also usually the first one to help and towards the end of the series (specifically the We're Not Perfect song) she even says how she can be too eager to please. Heck, She and the other Apples went on a road trip with Pinkie to find out if she was blood related to them.

Here's a fun controversial take: Equestria Games is a GREAT episode. While I get that it's an anticlimactic end to the sub-arc it'd been setting up for two seasons, it's still a great episode on its own detached from that, and I feel just being a sports episode by itself would've been boring. Not just that, but it's really good commentary on struggling with accepting your mistakes and acknowledging the good things you do. It was great for Spike in terms of character development, miles ahead of Power Ponies earlier that season.
Also, the majority of Spike episodes are good actually, but no one is ready for that take just yet.

  • @thediamondtank
    @thediamondtank Год назад +24

Not sure if these are controversial or not but here goes:
    • FIM never got truly bad. While I agree the latter seasons are incredibly different to the early ones in many ways and have some stinker episodes (looking at you Yakity Sax, Cart before the ponies and 2 4 6 greeeat) i think the overall quality was still exceptionally high throughout them and by extension the overall series.
    • Mlp G5 was never good. The movie had great visuals and Hitch was a great character and….that’s it. It had an uninspired and dull story that had no concern for consistency with a boring main character in the form of Sunny

    • @Angeli-Kay
      @Angeli-Kay Год назад +7

It never got “bad”. But later seasons, definitely seemed more wonky and predictable. I believe it could have been from new writers introduced or something.
It aggravated me that there was a point I’d watch new episodes and predict exactly what the characters would do and say before it happened. It was boring and freaky at the same time. That wasn’t the case for season 1-6 for me.
But I agree the show, aside from little character and writing gripes, still maintained very high quality to the end.

    • @thediamondtank
      @thediamondtank Год назад

@@Angeli-Kay I understand what you mean and to an extent I agree. It’s absolutely infuriating in any show or movie or even book franchise where you can guess everything about a story while watching or reading it even what the writer wants to be a twist.
Although, as the avid season 7 and 9 defender as I am, the later seasons were still very capable of surprising the audience in interesting ways. The Perfect Pear is a perfect example of this on top of many others. I’d also say that the early seasons were not free from this issue either, particularly in season 1, where if you’ve watched any other cartoons you’d know where the story is headed. Dragonshy and Best Night Ever are good examples of this where the middle of them drags on and becomes a chore to get through as they are basically restating the same information over and over again to service the breaking point and the climax.
I’d also say that sometimes being able to predict what a character will say can be a good thing but only if the way you are predicting it is through established information you are given of that character - if you can do that then the writers have successfully crafted a well-rounded character. If it’s just by the fact that the characters themselves are in a generic situation then that’s bad writing.

    • @Angeli-Kay
      @Angeli-Kay Год назад +2

@@thediamondtank Good points! Thanks for responding! I agree the Mane 6 and many beyond are very well-rounded characters. Later seasons did pull off some surprises and cool discoveries with new ponies, magic, and worlds -but I wouldn’t say I experienced the same for the main & secondary characters.
My first comment was referring to character journeys and set-ups the series developed over time, rather than the world-building, villains and such. I guess I had a craving to explore more sides of the characters but sometimes it felt stagnated to me.
For example, Rainbow Dash becoming a Wonderbolt not only felt anticlimactic in how she achieved it, but this didn’t affect much in her life. There wasn’t much explored or added to her character from getting her long-awaited dream.
I don’t know, I always felt I wanted to characters respond a bit differently to some things that happened. I wanted to learn NEW things about them. I really like both Discord and Trixie, but both are treated as never-changing, burdensome comic relief. With how much screen time they got, I wondered why they couldn’t have more depth. And there are many things I wished was built into Starlight Glimmer’s reformed character to give it more flair, which was my earlier hot take.
All that said, this show had many characters and stories to balance over 9 seasons. All the details they managed to include and keep up with is impressive! I personally might be leaning more towards the slice-of-life, coming of age side of the show and things seemed like they switched gears into a more high stakes and action-packed style as the show went on which probably decreased some of that. The show never got bad, I think it was just shifting its focuses over time.

That's an interesting take on Trixie. I'm inclined to agree.
And for Cozy Glow, I think there are two things that make her a compelling villain. One is that she's really smart, so she manipulates everyone in interesting ways and creates a lot of tension and unexpected twists.
The other is that she fits well into the overarching theme for the season. Equestria is opening itself to non-pony creatures from different kingdoms, and these creatures are struggling to fit in and assimilate Equestria's values and culture, and they are met with suspicion and hostility, or even pity, from time to time. Meanwhile, Cozy is the quintessential cute little pony, complete with a pink and baby blue color scheme and a bow. The least person anyone would suspect. And then she turns out to be one of the most dangerous and sadistic villains, and basically almost destroys the whole world. It shows how prejudices are not only hurtful and unfair, but they also blind you to where the real threats are, and facilitate the work of bad actors who happen to fly under your radar.

Respectfully disagree. As another example to this, Fluttershy many times showed evidence of flat-out social anxiety disorder. She has similar meltdowns and moments of panic put in a exaggerated manner. I don’t feel her plight is inappropriate.
This is not to invalidate any unpleasant feelings you had when you watched moments like that in the series, I would just argue there shouldn’t be roadblocks against being able to write various takes on our human vulnerabilities, even when it approaches disorders.
Children’s cartoons involve exaggeration and sometimes a lighter portrayal of issues. This could be a potential problem if they were ever created with malicious intent. But this is not the case for Twilight in MLP. Her full story is about overcoming this problem. (Same with Fluttershy showing moments of stress and fear, gradually becoming more confident from her life lessons) Her full character arc throughout the series is her achievement of maturity as well as not pressuring herself so much and trusting in her friends. That episode and the series is a victory story for her! It’s not a misery pit to beat her down and degrade her as a person. There was no dancing or anything like that.
Oftentimes in the show, the other characters are extremely concerned toward the breakdowns and desire to help. When people (same for children), watch Mlp episodes take on panic or likewise, it seems they can walk away feeling hope by the end. And I feel that is the writers’ intention. I’ve seen many touching stories written in posts and comment sections of fans saying they relate to characters like Twilight and Fluttershy and sharing their feelings of how their victories helped inspire them.

I completely agree with you. I don’t get why this issue is viewed as okay just because MLP is a kids show. What about a show like Steven Universe Future, which is also a lighthearted cartoon for kids but tackles mental health seriously? Or even Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, an animated kids film that has funny moments but the protagonist having a panic attack is not one of them.
In the later seasons of MLP, Twilight’s mental health wasn’t handled well at all. She essentially gets over her anxiety offscreen and her friends act toxic and OOC in season 9 when they mock her issues. The show didn’t do a good job handling this topic at all and is just one of the ways in which Twilight as a character was done dirty. MLP being a lighthearted children’s show isn’t an excuse since there are other shows and movies aimed at the same audience that tackled this subject better. Thanks for speaking up about this since it’s something I’ve been concerned about for a while now so I’m glad to see others noticed this problem too!

He is CHAOS, he is never going to do things in a "logical" way, because that would go against his very being. I think his actions can be forgiven, because he had Twilight's best interests at heart. The G4 IDW comics are objectively better than the show they're based on. Don't get me wrong, without Friendship is Magic being as good as it is, we wouldn't have the comics. They only came into being two years into the show's run, after all.
But the comics give more exploration and depth to the characters, especially those that aren't nearly as prominent in the show like Celestia, Big McIntosh, and even Prince Blueblood. As a matter of fact, the comics are what made me appreciate the characters more, especially Rainbow Dash. And that is just scratching the surface of why they are better.

And I still remember the two main reasons why people said that they didn't want Chrysalis to reform, Is because they thought that another reformed villain arc is the last thing that the show needed and because the show was already running low on top quality villains as it was.

Like with Fluttershy's anxiety, Discord's had his own issues with change. For one, he's been alone for *years,* so he's not gonna know everything about friendship. Two, he's also been used to having things go his way for just as long, so the idea of his little arrangement backfiring probably didn't even cross his mind.

  • @TheSqoad
    @TheSqoad Год назад +6

Some of my own MLP opinions.
    1) EqG should not have been set in a high school. None of the plot had any logic to it. Sunset can apparently raid a guarded castle, but not a high school. Twilight can apparently run for prom queen without formally being a student at said high school. Twilight is a young adult as a pony, but only a teenager as a human (not to mention all the other characters, like Celestia... or even The Dazzlings).
    2) Twilight and Flash romance was a missed opportunity. I know it was dropped due to butthurt backlash, but they genuinely had a bit of chemistry. Ignoring all the SciTwi stuff, Flash would eventually meet Twilight face-to-face... and they don't even acknowledge each other. What a waste! Speaking of romance:
    3) Rarity going her own way. Rarity was the only character who embraced the magic of romance and frequently fawned over handsome men of different shapes and sizes. So, of course, when the show ends the only pony who canonically, unquestionably, without a doubt got hitched and started a family was... Pinke Pie? What?
    4) The Young Six were squandered. They were no doubt meant to be the new generaion of the Elements of Harmony, and they even rebuilt the Tree of Harmony. Yet they don't have that as much content going forward as they really should. They could have had great bonding stories with their respective Element/Pillars, but oh well. Speaking of Pillars, they may as well not exist, only having any roles in 3-4 episodes since their introductions. Really sad. On that note:
    5) The show has far too many characters and uses far too few of them. Too many episode specifically focuses on the Mane 6 and their most immediate connections. The show would have been well-served to use side characters instead of main characters more often. Maybe Rarity tried to get Applejack to join The Pony Tones, but after getting stuck hanging out with Big Mac for the day, she finds out he loves singing and is really good at it. Could have been fun!
    6) MLP:FiM never did villains very well. Worst examples being:
    - Nightmare Moon wants eternal night... this would just kill everyone.
    - Queen Chrysalis and her changelings feed on love, but instead of body snatching the citizenry like she did Cadance, she orders an open assault and terrorise the ponies. Why?
    - Starlight Glimmer's villainy makes no sense. She takes ponies' special talents away from them, and then has them do things they are not good at. All because her friend moved out of town in her youth, and she couldn't just move on or try to keep in touch?
    7) Gen 5 probably should not have been a sequel. After everything that was Gen 4, Gen 5 clearly only wanted to be a sequel to help with sales. There was no plan, no idea, no inspiration. They just hoped some other writer would come up with some good excuses for why everything turned to muck. And what did they come up with? Another pony who wasn't Cosy Glow tried to do a racism... again. And this time Twilight and all of Equestria fell into total chaos and never recovered. Also all non-pony races appears to have been genocided, or something. Thank you, I hate it!

hard agree on points 4 and 6 - what frustrates me about the student 6 is the fact that shells of likable characters are there for all of them, except for gallus, whose one trait is that he's so terminally irony poisoned that he's incapable of genuine friendships. they're just painfully redundant, too, and that's because the writers who got to play with them threw that time in a fire and stacked their scripts with flavor dialogue.
as for the villains, yes, intelligence was the exception among them, but what they add to the story as a whole is a bigger problem in my opinion. what did chrysalis's existence add to the story? she uppercut an existing theme about controlling behavior in favor of the shreds of a theme about trusting your gut or something. what did she add after this episode? eugenics!! ever since I saw the times they are a changeling, suddenly the eugenicist rhetoric of "ALL of them are evil and bad, but not thorax, he's the good one" dawned on me and left a very poor taste in my mouth. I know I'm not interpreting this in bad faith because the foundational philosophical and pseudoscientific beliefs of racism, such as guilt by association and "criminal nature" in sentients, are still peddled by the ones who are supposed to be the good guys. and starlight is simply the worst antagonist I've ever seen for the reasons you listed, plus she feels like a garbage straw man of equality-favoring politics, and that sort of awkward place where the writers think they have something to say when they really don't is always painful to watch. it also paints a very ugly picture of the MLP writing staff when lined up with MLP's insidious racism problem. now, do I think the MLP writers are overtly racist? no, but all of this botchery of anything having to do with equality doesn't make a good case for that

Having recently started to rewatch the show (and EqG) after loving it as a kid but falling off it around Season 4, I've got some (no idea how controversial they are though lol)
1: I just can't get into Starlight. I don't think she's the worst thing ever - her debut as a villain is great, her design is cute and I love her VA - and I'm not against her redemption, but it really feels like they're trying to push her so hard as a new 'Mane 7' member and it's just not doing it for me. Plus oh god, her reason for brainwashing an entire village and abusing time to prevent the Mane 6 from ever meeting was so stupid, and she gets barely a slap on the wrist/hoof for all the hell she caused? I'm not done (just finished A Royal Problem, absolutely loved it, why did it take this long to get a Celestia and Luna episode?) so maybe she gets better as the series goes on but... bleh.
2: Also, I'm not really a fan of Sci-Twi either - as charming as she is in Friendship Games. This one's probably just the TwiSet shipper in me but I miss Pony Twilight and I feel like Sci just usurped her place in EqG. She doesn't have the previous relationships and chemistry Pony Twi had with Sunset and the Human 5, plus she just... gets alicorn wings. Like my girl Twilight had to _earn_ those. In all fairness, I've only seen the movies though.
3: I love her but tbh I preferred Luna's character in the earlier seasons, especially in S2/3. I remember finding it really unique and nice how despite all she went through and did as Nightmare Moon, instead of sitting around and sulking about it, she actively sought to help herself and other ponies. You could really see how she learnt from Nightmare Moon and tried to engage with her subjects in her own way, so it's a shame she's seemed to have regressed into a more generic, broody character who wants to be alone all the time - just feels odd considering after everything that happened and how she was originally. (As an aside, Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep was horrible.)

I don't think everyone should've been mad at rainbow for snapping at her parents. It was shown throughout the episode they were doing a bit much, they had convos about it before according to the dialogue, and they were very disruptive. She knows what they're like and said she does love them, she just didn't want them to be that extra and that i can understand. She could talk to them again, but that apparently didn't work since parents do what parents do. And a person... er, um pony can only take do much. It can get exhausting after a while. Scootaloo being upset with rainbow makes sense since her situation with her parents, but wasn't in the right either. But the understanding at the end was nice and felt right for them.

Ok here’s something I feel very strongly about: Rainbow Dash and Applejack are a very lazily chosen couple, and them being together in the finale physically hurts me. I have a problem with RD being a lesbian because she is the only rainbow colored character in the main cast. I think her being gay could equate to all rainbows meaning “gay” in the eyes of young audiences and their parents. I understand why a lot of the LGBTQ+ community is happy with it, since she’s basically the pride flag, but I myself am bisexual and I would really prefer if rainbow was either given a male spouse or none at all. Rainbows are for everyone, not just for the LGBTQ+. Every little girl loves rainbows, and in a kids show (yes I understand many adults watch too, but things like this should be handled carefully for the kids in the audience) a rainbow should never equate to queerness.
Now onto the second part of my controversial opinion: if there is going to be a queer couple in the mane 6 (which I think was always destined to be, lol) how about Applejack and twilight? 👁️👁️that’s my OTP right there. I get that there would be an issue with AJ growing old while twilight just gets taller and her hair gets more flowy, but if I’m remembering correctly a miss Lauren Faust said the mane 6 wasn’t gonna die 😭😭😭
