  • Bhai Shamsher Singh Zakhmi was born in the village of Manko (Ghurial) in District Jalandhar of Punjab into the home of Bhai Dault Singh Ji and Mata Raj Kaur. They were three brothers. They learned music from their father and Sardara Singh, the elder brother of Daulat Singh who used to play a string instrument called Taus. The tradition of music ran in the family. They also learned music from famous Professor Darshan Singh Komal Ji who trained hundreds of students in Punjab.
Bhai Shamsher Singh had two other brothers, the elder one was Bhai Dharam Singh Zakhmi, the younger one Bhai Gursharan Singh Zakhmi (Phuman Singh) who played Tabla. They formed a Jatha. In the nineteen sixties, Bhai Gursharan Singh emmigrated to the U.K. and they had to re-group with Bhai Amrik Singh, the elder son of Dharam Singh Zakhmi who used to play dilruba and younger son Hariqbal Singh on tabla. This Jatha was very popular due to their Indian classical-based Kirtan and very prolific Katha of Bhai Dharam Singh Zakhmi. They toured the U.K. in the late sixties and were very popular. Bhai Dharam Singh Zakhm had a heart problem and passed away in 1980. Bhai Amrik Singh had his own Jatha and Hariqbal Started a business.
Bhai Samsher Singh formed a Jatha with Mohanpal Singh (Nephew of very famous Kirtiniya Jassa Kirpala) and his son Akal Singh (on Tabla). They visited Toronto in the eightees and performed Kirtan in Gurudwaras.
Visions of Punjab recorded this Kirtani Jatha on Rogers Scarborough Cable. We present you one of their renditions. We hope viewers will like it.
