I loves these videos! It would actually be fun to have you do different “favorites” throughout the year, like paper in January, stamps in may, ink in July, etc. Less stress on you at the holidays, maybe, and we always have something to look forward to during the year!
Jennifer, I just wanted to thank you for putting out these videos especially with all the information and painstaking detail. Im sure it’s a lot of work. As I’m sure you understand imitation is the highest form of flattery and I’ve noticed there’s so many craft rooms that used your ideas, (down to the color) from your last craft room video. Crafters all over trust your judgment and if you say it’s your favorite...well it’s like Oprah’s favorite things, that item will be sold out everywhere! Anyway, I’m blabbing on but seriously, I appreciate the time spent and love these annual videos from you! Best to you! 💕
So agree about using GSM, lbs can mean so many different things depending on texture and thickness. In Europe we use GSM. Card sizes are also different A2 is twice an A3 which is twice an A4 which is the nearest to US letter so our normal card size is A6! Unfortunately US cover plates and card front dies are made to US A2 size cards which are wider and shorter than our A6..!!!
Because I make batches of cards for charity/donation, I do use the exact index due to cost (it's available at Sam Club at 1/2 the cost of the solar white). To keep my cards sturdy, I put an inner mat on that back side that essentially doubles up the cardstock and finishes the card really nicely. Since I don't have too much experience with the other brands (I don't know any better, lol), I don't have too many issues when using it for stamping or coloring either. Alcohol ink blending is possibly a little slow to blend, but I get a good final look, I think. So I'd say, yes, the exact index is thinner, all index will be in comparison to cover weights. But if you are crafting on a budget, it's not terrible and I have made gorgeous cards out of it. I've also used to use the Walmart Pen & Gear as well. So, if you are on a budget, remember you don't have to have the expensive stuff to craft. It's about making magic out of what you've got. Also, this is not a negative commentary against Jennifer using brand names or the more expensive products. I just wanted to share my experience with the cheaper product in case some of you are wondering how it compares due to budget concerns.
Thank you so much Jennifer. I didn’t know about the differences with the thickness of paper or how to select the right one for what I need. This video is a huge help ❤️
You love GSM, as does 96% of the planet. The US is the only country that uses pounds. When you can pick up two entirely different papers that are both £100, yet also vastly different, it makes no sense not to use GSM.
In UK too, no confusion whatsoever, the thicker the paper the higher the gsm. Honestly, I dont understand why America dont just use this standard? Calling 2 things 110lb would seem to indicate the same weight, but its not! Does not make sense.
@@MegaMiaow ...America is the only country (as far as I know) that still uses the old Imperial measurements. The rest of the world all use digital measurements. I wish they would catch up with the rest of the world and have a uniform standard of measurements worldwide.
Heck I am the PaperTemptress and know a LOT about paper and still learned something new so thank you very much for your informative (and EXTREMELY CREATIVE) videos...i have not missed one of your videos now for many many years......
You really cover all the bases in your Favorite Things videos, Jennifer. I have my list of FT papers I carry with me so I get the right stock for the right purpose. You answer all questions before I can think of them. So THANK YOU so many times over for this education and a way of saving money by getting the best papers and not wasting my time making on cheaper stock.
These videos are so helpful. I picked up some heavy wt. Neenah C.S. and wow what a difference than what I had been using. I also love G.K card stock. I can't wait for the organization video. I have incorporated several of your ideas and now I'm a lot more organized with very little expense. You have expanded my stamping horizon so much and I'm having fun stamping and doing different types of cards. Thank you.
I knew that not all cardstock weights were the same but I didn't realize that gsm was not a direct (metric?) conversion for the pound weight. So very good to know!
GREAT video and information! I know a lot of people get confused by paper so this will be an invaluable video to share (over and over and over again!) I have all of the great cardstocks, but several months ago I was able to pick up 25 sheets of EVERY color that is offered by GinaK and that's my current precious stash! I like Tim's watercolor paper, but I find that it doesn't take color as well as Arches. I guess because of the cotton? I use Tim's when working with ink and Arches for traditional (rare) watercolors. TFS! :)
Wow such a long informative video where I learned so much about cardstock, matching envelopes and paper packs. Love it and now I must go shopping. LOL You have incited my need to shop for craft supplies. Paper has always been a weakness of mine, I love all paper products. Thank you for your time and organizing skills and tips. I love the Memory Box colours, so beautiful. Also Spellbinders awesome range of colours. Gina K cardstock and envelopes have served me well over the years. Thanks again.
I've been using the Accent Opaque paper as my substitute for the Neenah for over a year now, as the Neenah Solar Crest 110 is a bit too expensive for me. I found it to work just as well as the Neenah for stamping and copics. I'm glad you included it in this video.
Thank you, this is super helpful. Using photo paper I bought at Walmart with distress oxide inks is pretty fun, after you’re done inking and it’s dry you can buff it to be shiny.
Thank you for the information about the paper weights, very helpful. Like how you store your paper. I have a new project to work on. And, thanks for the tip that TE carries pre cut mini slimline! I will be ordering mine. And, liked the envelope info too!
The Memory Box multiple shades in one pack is a fabulous idea...but it's too small for us 5x7 cardmakers. I have been wanting a product like that for a LONG time, with multiple shade of one color family. I spend way too much time looking all over my craft room for just the right shade of (pick a color) & I often end up settling for a color that is close but not perfect. I encourage Memory Box to bring out 8x8, 8 1/2 x 11 or 12x12 in these packs. I will support them single-handedly!
Thank you so much for the comparison of papers. I am an avid card maker but I never explored the ink blending because I wasn’t good with colors and the paper I use is good for cards but not ink blending. I have ordered some paper and have invested in Gina K, Simon Hurley and Altenew inks. Lotsa fun to come in 2024. I’ll be watching your videos for more inspiration ❤️❤️❤️
Wow what a purely technical video that explained many of the paper goods terms that none of us have ever noticed, such as GSM. Thanks for a great effort!
So thrilled to find the source for your rigid envelope mailers after receiving your card using this envelope!! Thanks for the super explanation of paper weights and gsm!!! Thanks for all the effort you put in to sharing information and techniques!!
Thanks Jennifer, I have been for 2 weeks going to get back to the cardmaking and I needed to investigate the different card stocks! Thanks for doing this for all of us!! Now I can get started.. if I can find my craft room! Very informative and appreciated!
I'm loving the accent opaque paper. They have lots of finishes and are really inexpensive. Their super smooth, smooth cover and heavy weight are all great. I use Recollections from Michael's coordinated color packs, great for layering and really inexpensive, not very heavy but the colors are nice. I'd like to get some of the TH white watercolor paper. I use arteza and canson but they aren't white white. I also use pastel, neon and brights regular copy paper for a lot of things when I want to add color but not weight. I can't see paying too much money for paper. I've never bought neenah, except the regular which I wasnt happy with at all, it was so light and flimsey, the SWCC price was way too high for me too even consider. I get glossy finishes pretty cheap too which work well for blending and markers.
Thank you for the wonderful descriptions of your favorite things! I enjoyed your video so very much! I thought that the rings with card stock was a wonderful way of seeing colors. I love paper and often times forget what I have. This tutorial was wonderful!
In case you are curious why the cover and index are the same poundage but not the same thickness its because paper is traditionally weighed in their "parent" size... The size it is cut to for initial distribution off the big roll that's made from the mill. Some papers are initially in smaller parent sheets, so comparing weight across types, like cover vs. Index is like comparing apples and oranges... They are both fruits... But that's where it ends. 65# cover will be a lot lighter than 110# cover... But you can't compare book to bond to cover to index. I thought you might like to know this information, I always like to know "why". Thanks for sharing all you do, as while I've been in the publishing industry forever... Paper crafts are fairly new to me... I've learned so much watching your videos!
Super helpful.....particularly the discussion on what makes a quality cardstock. It is a confusing science!! Paper and envelopes seem to be a simple topic, but as you say, it’s the foundation of a lovely card. Many thanks
Once again I had the time to just sit and watch another one of your wonderful informative videos. Great job Jennifer you do so much and you do it so well.
Lots of great advice in this one, thanks! I especially liked the envelope section this year. Your inspiration has me layering cards so I need those card mailer envelopes.
Sigh. My biggest takeaway from this entire video? That embossing folder IS Epcot. It's now on its way to me. I'm an annual passholder and Epcot is my favorite park. I send a LOT of Disney cards. Thanks!
I appreciate this video but for those of us who do not live in the US and have to pay shipping just to get crafting supplies, paper is one consumable that is bought cheaply. I buy local cardstock (180-300 gsm, whichever is available) because honestly? I wonder whether the recipients of my cards (beyond my family) keep them, look at them then put them away or just throwm them away when decluttering ten years after getting them. I do get that you want your recipients to get the best from you, thank you for sharing a wealth of information.
I completely agree with you. I cannot afford to buy expensive card stock. I also only make cards for family and friends. They are only happy that I took the time to make them a card. They wouldn’t have a clue about the card quality. Once my card is embellished they are more appreciative that I personalised it for them. For those who can afford to purchase this card stock, and maybe sell their cards, this video is great, and very informative.
I appreciate everyone's point of view. I am sharing what works for me but it may not be the best choice for everyone. And thank you for weighing in on your preference. :)
Thanks for spending so much time putting together these videos...they are so helpful! And I am very appreciative for the introduction to the inexpensive Accent Heavyweight Cardstock.
What a great explanation of weights and surfaces of papers, i never knew there was such a difference. I thought white card was white card. Thanks for your videos and info.
I know this comment may be too late to be viewed, but I wanted to say "thank you." I just ordered a ream of the Accent Opaque paper. I love Neenah Solar Crest and always use it, but this sounds like a truly practical alternative that can be helpful in keeping costs down during several phases of card making. The cost difference is significant!
THANKS SO MUCH! Such a thorough display and comparison, Jennifer. A few of these I may add to my supplies to improve my cards. The GSM comparison was helpful; I didn’t understand that. Take care. 😊 💌
Thank you so much for teaching me! Sadly I saw this after my purchase. I got the wrong Neenah - it was 110 lb but the GSM was 163! I can't use it for card making at all. I gave it a negative review on Amazon, even saw other people give similar reviews, then I saw this video and immediately changed my review since it truly was my mistake. It would be best if these differences were advertised but I did my best to repeat your great information so others would lose money as I did. Thank you again. Fantastic, invaluable information. Hugs!
FANTASTIC video, as yours always are! Wonderful information, just would like to know where you order your plastic card sleeves from and also the white card mailers from. Thanks Jennifer!
Thank you so much for the lb vs gsm tutorial! That was a lesson I learned the hard - and expensive - way when I first started paper crafting. I'm an album maker (who's learned all kinds of great techniques from card makers) and using the wrong paper as a page base will ruin an album with a quickness.
Thank you so much Jennifer for all the information and for giving us a sneak peak at how you organize your papers, I'd love to see you do an updated craftroom tour! Hint Hint!! LOL
Excellent explanation of differences in CS, thanks so much. I know you always try everything out, so your recommendations really mean more. I amsurprised Tonic did not make your list. They have some beautiful specialty and mirror CS, and their classic has a texture on one side that looks good in layers.
GREAT information! Thank you so much! I especially liked the segment on comparing card stocks. I always get confused on gsm and lbs. Now I know. Very helpful. I also have a list of things I want to get now haha. And I really like the card mailers.
Jennifer, I love the videos and thank you for taking the time to research so many crafting items! In the paper and envelope video, you pointed out the difference in gsm between the Neenah Solar White cardstock and the Neenah white exact index cardstock but could you explain what gsm represents and the significance on the numbers on the Neenah packages? Thank you!
This was SUCH a helpful and educational video about paper - thank you! BTW, I did purchase a ream of the Neenah Exact Index by mistake. I have found that it is a pretty good stock to use for writing panels inside cards I make with darker card stock. I keep a supply of pre-cut panels from this card stock for this use.
Thank you for this awesome informative video! Especially the Neenah differences, I won't be wasting my money anymore with buying the lesser weight Neenah! The only thing I would warn people about is getting your paper cut at office supply stores. Almost 2 reams of my white paper was cut lopsided and I still have to cut all of them again, with some being too small now for a cover card...😥
I am so sorry that you have had back luck with them cutting it for me. I have them cut mine all the time. Sounds like it may be hit or miss. Really explicit directions help but I suspect you did that. My friend Lydia Fiedler swears by Cutcardstock.com. You buy the paper, cut from them and they mail it to you.
I just came across this video. So much information! Thank you for all you do🙏🏻 Could you please help me understand how you calculated the measurements for the side folding mini slimline card at 30:37 I was thinking it would have to be a 12 inch measurement no matter which way it folds but you mentioned something which I’m not sure I understand how😳 Edit: Just as I sent this message I had a lightbulb moment💡I think I understand what you meant. Sorry about the confusion😀
Jennifer, Fortunate, am able to drive 1/2 hour to Neenah manufacturer to get my Solar Classic Crest. Wondering, do you ever use #80 for panels? I was surprised to see that on occasion with a few diecuts added to a panel and attached to a base, card and envelope are over 1 oz. Do you find that the properties are the same between #80 and #110 when it comes to blending? Since their product is reasonable locally, might make more sense for me to pick up both. Thanks for your input.
Thank you so much for this video! I always wonder where to purchase some of these things that others use. You always tell us where to get the stuff that you use and I appreciate that.
Jennifer, thank you so much for these videos. I have a question, though. I started using Neenah 110 lb cover stock as a card base and as a card front. Then, since I like layers on my cards, there is more thickness added. Now the cards don't fit in the A2 envelopes I have. Do the envelopes you recommend in this video accept cards that are thick and have embellishments?
They do accept cards with layers but not endless amounts of course. I usually use that size and don't have to go bigger but you can use a 5X7 envelope occasionally as needed.
I hear a lot of US card makers say they’re using 110lb cardstock. If the same lb cardstock can have totally different properties, why don’t they just stick to gsm? I’m in the UK, so we use gsm anyway 😁
I noticed that you didn't mention MFT's cardstock... I love their cardstock and inks, but they don't have matching envelopes. Not sure if you've tried them, but if you haven't you should give them a try... BTW, as always, love your videos, always so informative and inspirational!
Dragging out??? I have nothing else to do but quarantine - now that's dragging out along time.🤣😂 love, love this series.
hahaha truth!
So agree about using GSM, lbs can mean so many different things depending on texture and thickness. In Europe we use GSM. Card sizes are also different A2 is twice an A3 which is twice an A4 which is the nearest to US letter so our normal card size is A6! Thank you for explaining about pounds and gsm for card bases. Now I know why I’m having such a hard time scoring my new cardstock 😂.
The Neenah Index is my favorite for pulling prints from the gel press. I like the lighter gsm for that purpose.
Lol it’s funny how we are all paper NERDS. those memory box papers look awesome I love the color family pads for die cut layering
Because I make batches of cards for charity/donation, I do use the exact index due to cost (it's available at Sam Club at 1/2 the cost of the solar white). Thank you so much Jennifer. I didn’t know about the differences with the thickness of paper or how to select the right one for what I need. This video is a huge help ❤️
Thank you for this! All this time I've been using the Index paper thinking it was the thickest. It a whole new world! 😄
I love gsm, which is the standard we use in Australia. I find the pound thing SO CONFUSING!

I love Gina K Designs & Lawn Fawn cardstock. It's readily available in the UK. Haven't tried Concord & 9th yet. 🤗🇬🇧

TY TY TY for the paper specs. That was so clear and so helpful. No more wasting money trying to find what I want only to get an unexpected product.
This video is MARVELOUS!!! I do love all of them, but this one had such wonderful information! I especially love those special envelopes at the end!
We use the gsm over here in UK 🇬🇧 You can feel the difference!

I heard about Accent card stock from a Mary Polanco video. Glad to hear it has also been blessed by the Queen!
Great explanation of card stock, in the uk we buy card by gsm not lbs I often get confused by this when watching videos made in USA thanks
Thank you for de-mystifying cardstock thickness!

Thank you so much Jennifer for all the information and for giving us a sneak peak at how you organize your papers, I'd love to see you do an updated craftroom tour! Hint Hint!! LOL
So much value in this video! I appreciate you sharing the knowledge in our community.
Excellent explanation of differences in CS, thanks so much. I know you always try everything out, so your recommendations really mean more. I amsurprised Tonic did not make your list. They have some beautiful specialty and mirror CS, and their classic has a texture on one side that looks good in layers.
Yes, they do have great products.
I was wondering if their papers would make her list - they are so cool!
Awesome video Jennifer. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this.
It is so kind of you to share your hard earned experience!
You are such a good teacher!
This is great! I have wondered about different weights and textures. Thanks, Jennifer.
GREAT information! Thank you so much! I especially liked the segment on comparing card stocks. I always get confused on gsm and lbs. Now I know. Very helpful. I also have a list of things I want to get now haha. And I really like the card mailers.
Thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge.
You are such a blessing! Thank you so much for these videos Jennifer 💛🧡
Thank you!
I googled it because I didn't really know for sure! www.banana-print.co.uk/blog/what-is-gsm-paper/
I have learned so much from your video. Thank you so much for explaining the difference of the paper!
Thank you for all you do🙏🏻
Could you please help me understand how you calculated the measurements for the side folding mini slimline card at 30:37 I was thinking it would have to be a 12 inch measurement no matter which way it folds but you mentioned something which I’m not sure I understand how😳
Edit: Just as I sent this message I had a lightbulb moment💡I think I understand what you meant. Sorry about the confusion😀
Jennifer, how do you keep your Tim Holtz glass mat from glaring? This was a great video. Thank you.
I don't have any lights directly above my work surface
I’ve been looking for a good glitter card stock. Great timing, thanks.
Never heard anyone referring to grams per square meter as gsm. Learning something new.
Thanks for the info you always provide to us. It’s so useful.
I love your favorite crafty things series 😊😊😊😊😊😊
The US different paper types with the same lb weight is why I look a the gsm when it's available.
Would like to know where you get mailers, the thicker white envelopes.
As usual...love your video! Your videos are always so helpful!
I use 110 most often mainly for its sturdiness. They are similar to me in their properties other than weight.
Thank you. This is just the information I was looking for.
I know I can always trust your advice.

So what is your #1 paper then. I got confused. How much less in quality is the accent paper compared to the solar white?
Neenah 110 lb classic crest solar white it my favorite. It is thicker.
Thanks for the video and great comparison of these papers.
Wow! So much very helpful content here. I am a newbie to card making and so appreciative of this information. Thank you!
Such great information! The fedex kinkos cutting paper might have just changed the game for me!
Great, comprehensive video! Your videos are like Card making College! Thanks so much, I made notes.
Thank you so much for this video! I always wonder where to purchase some of these things that others use. You always tell us where to get the stuff that you use and I appreciate that.
Fabulous video! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video. I've learned a lot from you!
Thank you so much. Wonderful video. Wonderful information.
Thank you for this helpful video! All the paper numbers can be confusing! ☺️
It looks like they changed it from solar white to white - the other specifics are the same as solar white (lb/GSM).
Wonderful information all in one place
Very comprehensive and helpful.
Thank you for all you do.
Can you please do another video of inside shadow cards and inside tunnel cards?
yes, i will
I know GSM is grams per square meter but what is the pounds about?
I hear a lot of US card makers say they’re using 110lb cardstock. If the same lb cardstock can have totally different properties, why don’t they just stick to gsm? I’m in the UK, so we use gsm anyway 😁
I noticed that you didn't mention MFT's cardstock... I love their cardstock and inks, but they don't have matching envelopes. Not sure if you've tried them, but if you haven't you should give them a try...
BTW, as always, love your videos, always so informative and inspirational!
I have used their cardstock and I agree it is very nice cardstock.
