    The tragedy was that the coaching stock was scrapped almost immediately afterwards :-(

      @@jonathancruz562 I assume because the coaches were obsolete and potentially dangerous. This would have been around the end of the transition from wooden to steel frames, which were considerably less injurious in a collision. Some carriages were already being built with steel bodywork as well as frames, and that became the standard under BR, a decade later than this.
