    I made a set of grips for a 1911 out of two species of Walnut!
    Walnut is always a beautiful wood to work with and this project was no different!
    Watch and see how you can make your own set of grips with nothing more than a bandsaw, a dremel, and A LOT of sanding (haha)!
    Also, I digitally removed the serial number from the picture of the firearm for the customer's privacy. There really is still one there in real life ;)

    This was my first dremel project and I was a bit nervous to try it. What was your first project that made you really nervous to attempt?

    Should have made a set of thinner grips from the leftover. I've been a cabinet maker for 30 years. I would say you did a fantastic job. Keep it up!!

    Thanks for the video. I have had a piece of teak from the surrender deck of the USS Missouri I took when she was decommissioned. The piece is big enough to make a set of grips. Been wanting to do this for over 30 years.

    I watched the video and noticed a few things. For starters, those aren't 1911 grips. Most likely beretta or taurus 92 grips. Secondly I would recommend marking your grip screws directly from the existing grips before you even make your initial cuts. This will help with proper alignment of your grips on the frame. Another suggestion would be to sand the bases flat before you glue on your templates. I've had pieces that had defects that showed up after I had them cut to shape on the underside and had to scrap them.
    The material you chose is beautiful. It's got a great patterned chatoyancy (that tigers eye effect) that adds to the beauty. I wouldn't recommend checkering or stippling as that would detract from that effect. For a better uniformed edge sanding, use the belt sander with a finer grit belt. Use the dremel for areas where the belt sander wouldn't get to. I would seal with tru-oil for the best results. you can also select between gloss or satin finishes that way.
    Very good job for what you'd done. Now you need a picture of them installed on the firearm.

      Russ thanks so much for taking the time to watch and for your great feedback! You’re right these were not for a Colt 1911, just for the 1911 style of firearm.
      I also agree I could have done a better job of approaching the screw placement. Luckily they fit great, but that was probably mostly luck haha!
      I jointed the faces flat before I put the template on, so they came out pretty good.
      I will definitely look into Tru-Oil! I’d love other alternatives of finish!
      If you watch the very end of the video you can see a couple of pics of the grips installed on the firearm.
      Thank you so much once again!
      All input is greatly appreciated!

      @@BentleyDesignCo Absolutely nothing wrong with luck. I've been making 1911 grips as a hobby for about the past 5 years or so and it's been a lot of fun. I've found that lighter colored grips look better on darker colors guns unless you're doing an ebony on dark blued/black scheme. I also don't even bother with templates anymore unless I don't have the original grips in my posession. I'll just wrap the edges of the original grips with tape and use those as my templates. I actually make mine using a black and decker dragster belt sander. The dremel comes in for ambi safety notching and for the cut out for the mag release.
      Most of my grips are spalted bradford Pear (seeing as I had 2 come down in the yard and the wood was"there") But I've used mesquite, walnut, oak, Bubinga (stabilized) and maple. I try to use woods that if (or when) I screw up can be used in the smoker. My last project was to use a big portion of the trunk and make an entire stock for a Savage B-Mag rifle. Took me 8 months and 2 blanks to finish it. So keep having fun and keep posting videos.

    • @BentleyDesignCo
      @BentleyDesignCo  4 года назад

      That is awesome! I would have to agree with you on your light grips on darker colors. I think that would look best as well!
      Also, it's a good idea to put tape on the edge of the original grips. I wish I would have thought of that.... I scuffed the edges of these original grips in a couple spots. I know for next time now though! Thank you!
      Thank you so much for the feedback and the conversation! I truly appreciate it! :)

      The grips are for a Spanish Star , a 1911ish pistol they can be purchased very cheap but the stock grips are pretty terrible.

    • @acoow
      @acoow 4 года назад

      @@badas45 Yep. And the Star BM isn't a 1911 style firearm either. It looks kinda sorta like a 1911, but it is closer to a Browning Hi-Power in function and design.

    Found this on beginning woodworking so I know your new to this, me too. So please know I mean this all with love.
    It is called book matched not bookend. Be careful on the jointer 1) with wood this small even with the gripper 2) with figured wood can get some bad tear out.
    You can use squeeze clamps on your belt grinder handles why upside down to clamp it to bench and then you have both hands free.

    • @BentleyDesignCo
      @BentleyDesignCo  4 года назад +1

      CojakSilverBack first off, thank you so much for taking the time to watch my video! I still have so much to learn and hopefully always will!
      I talk without a prompter and make mistakes all the time and didn’t catch my bookend comment haha! Thank you for catching that!
      Also, I have a friend that lost part of a finger on a jointer so I definitely respect that machine! It’s one of the most dangerous in my shop.
      And for the clamps, I did have clamps holding it down. You may not be able to see it though because of my crappy camerawork haha!
      Thank you so much once again! You have given me so much to work toward and keep in mind going forward!

    Really nice work! That said... those aren't for a 1911 (I know, I've made plenty of 1911 grips). Without going and digging, I'd say the shape looks more like they're for a CZ 52 or something similar. Some similarities to a Browning Hipower as well. Either way, good work.
    EDIT: Looking at the thumbnail, looks more like a Star Model B maybe.

    • @BentleyDesignCo
      @BentleyDesignCo  Год назад

      Yea, I think someone else made a comment with what the model actually was. But that is true, this was not for a 1911, just a similar style. I hope this video can help anyone that may want to make a set for a 1911 though 👍🏻
      Thank you for watching and for your feedback!

    Really nice work on the 1911 grips. Any chance you have any idea how to make fluted walnut grips like those on a hungarian femaru model 37 .32 acp? Again, nice work

    • @BentleyDesignCo
      @BentleyDesignCo  4 года назад

      Thank you!
      I’m not really familiar with that firearm, but if you already have some grips that you were using on it, you can follow the same thing I did here. And just make the areas where you want the flute with pencil and dremel them out. And then use finer sandpaper to smooth out the grooves 👍🏻

    If he's an OK guy you can call him as YOUR brother-in-law😃, however if he borrows $20 bucks from you and "forgets" to pay you back. he's your WIFE'S brother-in-law 😖.
    BTW I enjoyed the drill press unboxing and set up.I have one question: With the drill press turned off and a drill bit tightly in the chuck,can you feel or hear any "free play" as you lightly twist the drill chuck/spindle backwards and forwards. The 1911 grips look great too.

    • @BentleyDesignCo
      @BentleyDesignCo  Год назад

      Hahaha! Good one! I agree ;)
      I don’t recall any noticeable play in the chuck, but I know this is not a high end setup so there may be. I am currently moving into a new house and the press is in storage atm so I will check when I get it back out and let you know! 👍🏻
      Thank you for watching!

      Yes it's a star BM think 1911 without the grip safety and the trigger is not as nice but as far as something in the shape of a 1911 that shoots 9 mm you won't find anything cheaper that'll beat it they're great guns... A few years ago they were on sale for like $99 every other 1911 manufacturer that has a gun that works this size in this day is going to be $1,000 and up

    Liking your video. However, you have more to learn on the band saw. They use exactly the same machine to cut meat at your butcher. It cuts right through the meat and bone with ease! Put your guide down to the thickness you are cutting!!! This is the equivalent of dry firing a pistol at your hand. Don’t do it

    • @BentleyDesignCo

      I absolutely agree with you!
      I had everything raised so I could see it better on camera. Then I nicked my finger with the blade and now I keep the guide down, no matter the view I get for the camera haha!

      I have indicated in other comments that this is just a 1911 style of grip and this video can be used to create grips for an actual 1911 following the same steps.
