CTR was one if those games where you can just relax and have fun. I remember I will play it for an hour with my family and host mini competitions. Another great thing about this game was that the gameplay was advance for it's time and the weapons were well balanced.
Of course CTR is much better than Mario Kart. Everything is better. Handling, sliding, sense of speed, jumping, stage and sound design, weapons/powers. And it has story mode

@fappers 4 u raiting says thats mk is just better. Only nostalgic PS4 owner without a Switch are more liking ctr. Me and 7 friends of me bought ctr, played it about one week and since then never again. Dont get me wrong. Its not the meaning that ctr is a bad game, we had some fun for a short time. I know its hard for you, but its the truth. Mk is better in everything (ok, it have no storymode).

It’s nice to see someone brings this up, the one thing that strike’d me as a child was how in Mario kart 64 they were using blurry sprites with 3D environments but crash CTR used actual polygons on the characters which look a lot better

I'm a Mario Kart guy through and through and yes, CTR IS better than Mario Kart..... 64. 2 things. 1: It should be. It came out almost 3 yrs later and had plenty of time to better what Mario Kart 64 did for it's time.
And 2: CRT should be more compared to Diddy Kong Racing, not Mario Kart. Although obviously both games being inspired by Mario Kart. I genuinely think CRT is better than MK64 but I have way more fond memories with MK64.
Also, Mario Kart (to me) took crown again with Double Dash and kept it. And no one on here is going to tell me that CRT is better than Double Dash, let alone the entire rest of the Mario Kart series outside of the GBA one of course.
DD Was the best. Battles, boosting, and customized supers. I played so many hours with my kids in battle more!! Riding around with 15 bombs lighting castle up with 4 people!!!

I dont think its unfair to compare MK64 to CTR. A release date that was three years later may be an excuse for more content, but the core gameplay was just better in CTR in a way you cant excuse, especially when this wasnt even MK's first game in the series. There's really nothing more to say besides that Crash Team Racing beat Nintendo at their own game. literally
Also, Double Dash came out a whole generation later, and no other Crash racing game was made by Naughty dog, so that's just a ridiculous comparison. That's like comparing Sonic All Star Racing Transformed to Mario Kart GP DX (the arcade one made by Namco). That makes no sense whatsoever lmao, and that's clearly not what he's talking about in the video
@@ThatsPety Are you sure? Because the video seems to be arguing that CTR is the best karting game, period. Came here to say that it's probably fair to make that argument in comparison to SMK and MK64 but subsequent Mario Kart entries (other than Wii imo) are just obviously so much better.

Yeah not everything. Jak 2 for me is a major dissapointment after brilliant Jak and Daxter. The gta style is horrible. Basically everywhere you go you are hunted and vehicles control terrible
Actually I agree with him. I love this game and the drifting feels so much better than Mario carts. Also in terms of graphics. These tracks are so much more creative for the time too

CTR has a very complex gameplay.
Story mode, hub world, boss races... everything that Diddy Kong Racing (N64) has done two years before CTR was released. DKR is by far the best one of that generation.
First doesn't mean better. Crash took the DKR formula and made it better, and took the MK racing formula, and made that better. It improved upon all of the competition of the time, and that's why it's the best of that gen.
In all honesty, I found CTR to control better than any of the Mario Kart games with it's better steering, the drift boosts being MUCH easier to manage courtesy of the gauge at the bottom-right. The MK games kinda suffer from the over dosage of baby versions of characters and guest racers when Mario has plenty of characters they could use instead (Captain Syrup, Mona Pizza, and Pauline). Mario does also have more tracks and weapons, but... in this case I view this as quality over quantity.
Mario kart's controls feel awkward after first playing CTR. It's like playing dota 1 again after growing accustomed to dota 2... You respect it cause it came first, but there's no reason to go back

Couldn't agree more. Crash Team Racing took Mario Kart to the cleaners. This was one of the few times where a knock off game was actually better than the original. CTR had better tracks, more intense and faster gameplay, unlock-able content and an actual one player story mode that offered much more single player campaign content than the quick and tiring Mario Grand Prixs.
It's not an "opinion", it's a fact that it's better than Mario Kart.

Not really. It's a bunch of people complaining about the commenters who disagree with the video saying that they never provide evidence on ho Mario Kart is better than CTR, even though they are probably the same people reminding everyone that this video is of someone else's opinion and they can't let another person have their own without trying to disprove it.

For me I think it’s the powersliding mechanic that makes me prefer CTR over Mario Kart. It’s just more satisfying to use. The tracks are cool too.

@bitchasshoeism NO! NOT THAT ONE! I respect that it has important historical value, but after playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe... it just doesn't hold up by modern standards.
CTR, on the other hand, I played to death as a kid. Literally. The disc is so scratched, it softlocks before the title screen because Cortex keeps forgetting his lines.
The biggest thing that makes CTR better thank MK is the fact it rewards skill and the game isn't trying to F-up the player being first all the time. MK is like 70% random, CTR is 100% skill
I could never quite get a handle on CTR, so I always preferred Mario Kart (especially Double Dash, 7 & 8 Deluxe). Definitely gonna give it another go once the remake comes out though!
Also, am I the only one that likes Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing Transformed?! All I see in the comments are Mario Kart, CTR & Diddy Kong Racing. SASASRT doesn’t even get a mention?! Dang! That’s cold-blooded! lol
Master the drift boost in CTR and you will absolutely love it. CTR has an incredibly high ceiling that almost never stops, there's constant progression to improve in both your driving mechanics & track mechanics, you don't get that in MK whatsoever, not since SMK.

in Mario kart it's actually a meta to stay behind cus better items and blue shells. Blue shell counter didn't exist before Mario kart 8 even. CTR had counter for the warp hole.

People who played mario kart and check CTR for the frst time think it's about the items and the colorful characters.
CTR is actually about the turbo boosts and the glitchy shortcuts. That's what makes it unique

The lack of a real CTR sequel by Naughty Dog is the main reason the Kart genre nowadays is stagnant and it lacked major innovation for almost 20 years.
I just seriously hope this is going to change with the CTR Remake... but I don't really count too much on it, the developer doesn't have a great track record.
And no, CNK doesn't count as the valid CTR sequel we needed, magnetic wheels were cool to see, but not very useful or game changing, and overall CNK is just a slower CTR with a quite terrible physics and mixed track design, the only cool thing they added is the turbo counter (which was already in the Japanese version of CTR, by the way).
CTR had the turbo counter in the US version. You had to use a cheat code to turn it on.

While I enjoyed my PS1, the crash games and their glory, I do enjoy Mario Kart 64 more. It's not going to stop me from picking up CTR's PS4/Switch remake.
CTR also seemed way more aggressive than Mario Kart, it seemed you didn't have to wait too long to find another line of weapon pickup boxes after you used a weapon, (unless you fire your weapons immediately after you get them).
I think CTR withstood the test of time much better than MK64, and this is coming from someone who grew up playing the latter game. MK64's battle mode was a lot of fun (and still is, if you play it with the right people), but CTR definitely provides the more compelling racing experience.

Actually you can avoid that blue shell if you have a Giant Tree Eating (sorry I don't remember the name), I also remember use the red shell on the right time can break that blue shell when it is behind you close enough as well.
But I can't wait to play Crash Team Racing again!
At the time yes, hell I'd argue Mario kart 64 wasn't even the best kart racer on the n64.
I 100% agree, it truly does hold up decades later and is the best kart racer around, if they mess with the controls and dont get it perfect then this game is gonna be interesting.

Gran Turismo 2, Colin McRae Rally 2, CTR, Ridge Racer - PSX was great at racing games! Although I prefer F - Zero to Wipeout but that's the only exception

To this day, this game still remains my favorite kart racer along with all stars racing transformed. That said, I think that the one thing that works against it is the one thing that is the reason why I prefer these games over Mario Kart, and that's the fact that they're skill based. I can literally get anybody to play MK because the game is so dang accessible and since anybody has a chance at winning a race, it keeps them engaged for longer and they (and subsequently me) won't get bored from constantly being in back all the time.
As much as I love the prior two games I mentioned, every time I play someone at those, I end up just leading the whole race and barely if ever actually competing with them because i've played it for so long but that isn't the case with mario kart since as long as you're semi-competent at driving, both the items and the CPU will make sure that 1st place never actually holds on to first place for that long, even with MK8 being better in terms of allowing more player skill to shine through, it can still be really luck based.
I don't say this as a way to put down Mario kart, I still like the series despite it being near the bottom of my kart racing pantheon. In fact, this is one of the things that I can say it does outright better than the competition since not everyone wants to bring their A-game for a party racer and just want to have fun.
This is the most eloquently-put, unbiased take on the whole thing I've read in any comments section about it. This is pretty much 100% how I see it and you just said it all so well! I never could *fully* put into words why I loved CTR and Sonic All Stars so much more but... its "skill based"! That's the big thing! And as you say, the presence or lack thereof of "skill based" gameplay definitely seems to be the defining factor in the formula of enjoyability depending on the people playing.
The true contender is Diddy Kong Racing.

Why does everyone forget about Diddy Kong Racing? I played it on my cousins N64 since I was an GameCube kid,but it was so fun.
Man this game makes me reevaluate my whole "I will not spent a dime on PSplus" mentality. I loved this when I was a teenager. I may break my principles and actually subscribe to PS+ in order to destroy some people online. I was UNBEATABLE back in the day especially in the VS mode.

CTR is a masterpiece, it was available for a wildly successful home console so many people had access to it and it did way better than MKR.

True. I played against my friend who plays nothing but Mario Kart Wii and I beat her at her own game in half the tracks. I've only ever played CTR and CNK and never played any other game in the genre. Mario Kart is too simple.
As a huge mario kart fan that has never played ctr, I look forward to play it when the remastered version when it comes out to see how it plays

In my opinion MK64 doesnt even compare to CTR, but Diddys Kong Racing does, it had a lot of things Mario Kart 64 lacked.
Also i still find Crash Team Racing and Sonic & Sega All Star Racing more enjoyable than most Mario Kart games.
Still i want a NEW Crash game.

I agree that CTR is a better game than Mario Kart, but I also think that ModNation Racers is a superior game to both of them because it's more challenging and the attacking and defending was a lot more tactical and advanced.
Crash Team Racing and Diddy Kong Racing are better than Mario Kart 64 if anything I find the whole Super Mario series to be overrated it's clear that Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong should be the new faces of Nintendo and Crash Bandicoot should be the face of PlayStation.
I can't simply find how some people consider Mario kart better...it has LASTED long, but that doesn't make it better... CTR's way to accelerate has always been better than MK's; the tracks were better with "less" material, more interesting characters, a story mode to make it enjoyable even alone, and CNK even added the antigravity thingy before MK7 ... I just can't find anything better in MK...maybe better known characters? but..apart from that...yeah, nothing

I've alway been a Nintendo fanboy, so I wasn't aware of how ahead of the time this game was. Looking forward to the remaster, though, I still don't see why they just didn't use all the resources to make an official sequel.
It was definetely better than MK back in the day, but i highly doubt that the remake will come even close to MK8. MK's been organically evolving, game after game, while CTR was in limbo.
The CTR remake will probably "borrow back" some of that evolution to help it adjust to the modern age, the same way all of those "evolved" mario kart games really only became that way after borrowing from CTR's initial improvements over mario kart.
Diddy Kong Racing might be a more appropriate comparison actually. When the devs were testing CTR they remade the crescent island track from DKR in their engine to see if they could pull it off on PS1. They did. So the inspirations are most blatantly from DKR, though they did do well to make it their own. DKR was waaaay better than Mario Kart on the N64 and I played it to death. It really did reward skill just like how CTR does.
Well, I think the only 2 Mario Karts that are truly superior to CTR are DS and 8 Deluxe, but besides those 2, I agree that CTR did a revolutionary job at being one of the best Kart racers out there, and maybe with Nitro Fueled on the PS4, that might dethrone the previously mentioned Mario Kart games, but only time will tell
