The HX90 does not have rubbish video, though it looked bad here compared with the Canon simply because the reviewer did not bother to investigate the video settings before over-exposing, giving the HSX90 a washed out appearance. Please do not take the advice of a "reviewer" who hasn't even taken the trouble to read the manual before making entirely false judgements about a given camera. I recommend you read or view camera reviews where the reviewer has bothered to do some research before misleading you.
Problem is you are not comparing like with like. The sony has a huge 30x zoom. The Canon doesnt but has a better sensor. The cameras are meant to be used for different things. The true comparison, to be meaningful is between the Canon and the sony rx1003 or 4?
hx90 is best for low budget, from this video the audio quality better than g7x. the hx90 video acceptable for youtube standart. but for low light doesnt looks good, but since the price is friendly i think this is best camera for vlogger who have low budget
A better comparison with the HX90 will be the PowerShot SX730. I mean sure the G7 X II will be better, but it is also quite a bit more expensive, so to me is all about what you are willing to pay.
I'm in torn... g7x pict quality is definitely better but the audio quality... meanwhile hx90 is far lose with the pict quality but the audio one is better...
Phillip Dorset Oh I definitely do too. That f/1.8 is bae. I have a G7X on order; should be here in a couple days! It's worth the investment I think. Vlogging is more fun when you know the quality is fantastic.
Another great video. So obvious that the 1" sensor delivers superior detail and sharpness. Funny thing is the sensor in the Canon is suspected by many pundits to be the exact same one as in the RX100. In essence it's a Sony sensor vs Sony sensor comparison. The H90v produces imagery comparable to more advanced mobile phones like the Samsung S6, Note 5, or iPhone 6 series. If you're going to spend around $500 then go for the RX100m2. Superior all the way.
Wouldn't it make more sense to get a video camera for a vlog? If video is the main media format you're interested in, there are plenty of very capable yet affordable video cameras that can also take the odd photo if necessary.
GREAT presentation and GREAT argumentation! This all goes to say that in many instances the Sony little guy beats the crap out of bulky cameras that make guys think they are getting a better camera thus better images on account of the price. YOU can't beat the Sony sensors for image & video quality as yet (considering the price vs quality report) I still own the HX9V (bought on 2011, before the Tsunami) And I still marvel at its quality & performance for a little P&S camera. It brings home the bacon without major compromises. I know I'll never expose my images or videos at the National Art Gallery, but I've been printing nice 11"X17" chosen from my wife's vacation, and we are happy with the results. Thanks for showing RAW videos. I mean just out of the cameras without trying to impress the viewers with post edited "Look what I did" stills & videos. So, after 2 years have passed...How's that little sucker doing?
I'm tempted to buy the Sony DSC HX90V but I need to be able to connect the camera to my PC as a webcam for OBS, is the HX90V able to do this? I was going to buy the Canon G7X Mark II but then read that it is unable to act as a web/PC camera. Help?
Philip you seem like the guy who can help me out! I purchased the Canon G7x mark II today instead of the Sony rx100 III. I still wasn't sure which one to buy, but I went for the canon becuse it has more zoom range and the touch screen. I tried it out, quality is nice, colors are nice(sometimes a bit too saturated, but I like some color), auto focus is good but just sometimes it lacks a bit(I except that the Sony would have the same). The downside is that it makes a lot of sound(zoom, auto focus etc) don't know yet if it bothers me. What's your opinion on these two? Wish I could compare them next to eachother! Maybe I could also purchase the sony tomorrow and take back one of them after..hmm
Looking for a compact camera (at a reasonable price) that takes great pictures because that's what they do best. (good low light pics would be a huge plus). If you main reason to buy a camera is for video...Then a Camcorder should be your first choice because that's what they do best. JMO.
Thank you for this test. After the worry is that these 2 devices do not have the same budget. And precisely I hesitate with the 2! The G7x has an amazing quality! The HX90V has better audio. I think I take the Sony because of the budget ... It will be ample enough for my vlogs :) I hope my English is good (I am French)
If you are going to compare two cameras it might help to thoroughly read the manuals of both before you "test" them then make comments which are not based on any knowledge of how they work. The HX90 video can be adjusted to get rid of the over exposures you filmed.
hi philip! I'm thinking of purchasing the sony hx80 and since the hx90 is pretty much the same thing without the gps, this was super helpful to me, so thank you!!! It was very helpful for me to see the quality compared to the g7x. were you filming at 1080 60fps on both cameras??
The Sony HX90 has a 1/2.3 sensor (7.82mm) The Canon G7x has a 1” sensor (13.2mmx8.8mm) almost twice the size so the canon will have better quality due to the larger sensor. The iPhone has a 1/3 sensor (4.8mm )
if you are comparing zoom range then you should he comparing the Canon G3X - but of course it costs more - but of not so pocketable but has 1 inch sensor - the downfall of the Sony HX90 is that it does not do not RAW - but ultra portable - but also a much smaller sensor so low light performance not that good - in good light it is decent - an advantage of the Canons is a Touch LCD with Touch To Focus / Shutter - and of course the G7X only 100mm focal length - the RX100m3 and M4 only go 24-70mm - but otherwise a fantastic little camera and does 5 min 4K video and has the best video of the bunch - the Sony HX90 has good video - even better then the Canon's but it all boils down to low light performance and RAW - and Yes I agree the G7X overexposes a bit but easily adjusted - the answer is to own both a HX90 for ultra small and ultra zoom and then either the G7X or the RX100m4 - or of size is not as important then the Canon G3X if zoom is important and size still important - else the Panasonic FZ1000 with 1 inch sensor and 600mm zoom but not small anymore :( - so good video - but no easy answer :) I own the RX100 and the G7X and the HX50 ( might upgrade to the HX90 as it is a bit smaller ) - but really to carry both might not be a bad option as the HX90 is so small and say the RX100m4 with great video and 4K for 5min clips and the best in low light of these smaller cameras - ( I wish the RX100m4 had 24-100mm and Touch LCD and Touch Shutter )
GX7, G3X, RX100m3, HX90, RX100m4, Panasonic FZ1000, HX50 - are you sure you couldn't through in a few more cameras? ;-) As for RAW, on a camera a the small sensor like the HX90 there isn't that much dynamic range to work with. The HX90, though, does have a dynamic range setting (software to even out contrast in one image) and HDR. And there's multi-frame ISO, which uses very high ISO with relatively high shutter speeds in a burst of images, and then maps noise in each image, removes it, and combines all the photos into one.
Hi I'm searching for the best affordable vlogging camera and I came up to you video. I got this 3 cameras. The sony hx90(the one on your video), the sony wx500(strip down version of hx90), and a mirrorless camera which is canon eos m10. I watched your video and found a grainy footage in low light of the hx90. however, I'm double thinking because if I go with the hx90, I will get the view finder, flip screen, more portability, and faster auto focus. but I won't get the decent low light performance and touch lcd. they're in almost same price range i think. Hello, I would like to know if the Sony HX90 has sufficient steel parts to make it magnetic. I dropped mine in to the sea, I know its (exact location). I can purchase a large magnet and lowering on a rope, but I don’t think there is much point as I guess it’s all aluminum. Anyone know if the camera is magnetic? Thanks
Can someone help me I just purchesed the canon g7x and the quality looks nothing like this one? watch my latest video its like blurry and pixel like? HEEEELP! :(
lol How is this spam? I asked a question which Phillip kindly answered, How would he know what kind of problem I was having if I didnt have an example for him to see
finally someone gets it. An inexpensive camcorder will make a better quality video then either of these two cameras. and they almost all come with a mic port too.
I wish I would have seen your video before I bought the sony because it has 30x zoom & based on reviews. so disappointed. photos are not crisp. I wish I would have returned it, I have a sony dsv9v with 16X zoom. & photos are better. I should have returned it. I was in an accident & really didn't get into it until it was too late to return. Very happy with video, Happy with my phone video. They also have the K blanked out.
In 2016 I both Sony DSC-HX90V after my previous Sony DSC-HX20V lens motor has failed ( aprox 14 months after purchase ) In less than 4 months after purchase of the new camera the OCD Ocular has failed and camera started to switch off and on during normal operations . I sent the camera through the retailer back to Sony . I waited 4 weeks for the warranty repair ,though upon receipt it was discovered that Sony did NOT perform any repair at all and filed blindly a repair protocol stating everything was OK . The large retailer sent the cam back to Sony on Feb 20,2016 with a huge complaint about cheating , asking for express repair . Nothing was done and the camera is still there . In parallel I wrote an email complaint to Sony as into them filling blindly repair protocols whereby they did not even read my complaint telling me to go back to the seller . The HELL with you SONY CHINA ltd stay away from them they cheat the public under their " great " corporate logo. If you are lucky and DSC-HX90V works then is has great features. But I doubt because also this product is obsolete and no longer manufactured !
The HX90 has a great zoom and really impressive mic quality, but that video quality is rubbish...
+Rise Tea Yep =D
Tea why is the hx 90 video poor?? Please advise. Thinking about getting The 80 or 90
The HX90 does not have rubbish video, though it looked bad here compared with the Canon simply because the reviewer did not bother to investigate the video settings before over-exposing, giving the HSX90 a washed out appearance. fingerhorn4 Although this is true but you know the average person won't either.

The G7x has the Sony sensor used in the RX100III, might be fun to compare those two, or just get a RX100 cheap instead of the Canon.
Mark P. Same sensor?? Why is rx100 4 30% more money?? It the mark 3 or 4 worth the extra cash over the G7x mark 2?
Canon it's very good
SONY -that's really nice camera!
I dont know why your HX90 looks so laggy, but it doesnt happen on mine
I think he forgot to set into 60fps
A better comparison with the HX90 will be the PowerShot SX730. I mean sure the G7 X II will be better, but it is also quite a bit more expensive, so to me is all about what you are willing to pay.

babyroses020304 agree
The low light performance is TERRIBLE in videos. I guess I'll have to get a RX100 iv now :(
I thought the HX90 held its own against the G7X quite well, surprisingly.
+Joshua Pinkly It's not too bad, I still prefer the DOF of the g7x
Phillip Dorset Oh I definitely do too. That f/1.8 is bae. I have a G7X on order; should be here in a couple days! It's worth the investment I think. Vlogging is more fun when you know the quality is fantastic.
true ;)
Love the vid Phillip. I lost it when you walked into the plant hahaha
+YuB Hahahaha
YuB heyy whatcha doin here love your videos so much
Thanks for video you saved me from making a mistake on hx90
+Colm Malone Perfect!
Same here (a year later). :)
It's not the same price
I wanted to buy the g7x but it seems to be discontinued and I can only find the g7x Mark ii

What's the best settings to put the camera on to capture the best pictures and videos?
Just seen your video and it has really helped me in deciding that I should not go for the HX90. Keep up the good work. 👍

Mr.phillip Dorset.....🙄🙄🙄!!! amazing video 👍🏻 please keep it up 🙏🏻 happy to see your video

what about photo reviews seeing how its a camera.

Alexis Chang hi alexis, did u buy hx90v? because i want to buy it soon.. what do you think about it?
Awesome comparison... I'm sold on the G7X thanks!
I liked the audio of the sony best, but the canon had better video quality. So honestly, I don't know if there's another camera in between?
NorwegianGeek Same here =D What do you mean by In-between? Price wise or image quail?
Phillip Dorset Both I guess!
Ya I'm thinking the same thing too! Please help
The Sony HX90 has a 1/2.3 sensor (7.82mm)
The Canon G7x has a 1” sensor (13.2mmx8.8mm) almost twice the size so the canon will have better quality due to the larger sensor.
The iPhone has a 1/3 sensor (4.8mm )
The HX90 wins style points cuz of the viewfinder and is well ergonomically designed. Also the HX80 is cheaper, I'd go with that one.
I almost bought the hx90 and the low light is grainy... id prolly buy the rx or a5100 instead
!Great review video! I'm so tempted to get the G7X now, thanks Phillip! :)
+Amanda Wong Great that it could help out =)
come on lad the settings on the HX90 have obviously been changed to purposely make it look trash
You can't really compare hx 90 with G7x one is over £500 and other under £300 (at the time of me writing this)
if you are comparing zoom range then you should he comparing the Canon G3X - but of course it costs more - but of not so pocketable but has 1 inch sensor - the downfall of the Sony HX90 is that it does not do not RAW - but ultra portable - but also a much smaller sensor so low light performance not that good - in good light it is decent -
an advantage of the Canons is a Touch LCD with Touch To Focus / Shutter - and of course the G7X only 100mm focal length - the RX100m3 and M4 only go 24-70mm - but otherwise a fantastic little camera and does 5 min 4K video and has the best video of the bunch - the Sony HX90 has good video - even better then the Canon's but it all boils down to low light performance and RAW - and Yes I agree the G7X overexposes a bit but easily adjusted - the answer is to own both a HX90 for ultra small and ultra zoom and then either the G7X or the RX100m4 - or of size is not as important then the Canon G3X if zoom is important and size still important - else the Panasonic FZ1000 with 1 inch sensor and 600mm zoom but not small anymore :( - so good video - but no easy answer :) I own the RX100 and the G7X and the HX50 ( might upgrade to the HX90 as it is a bit smaller ) - but really to carry both might not be a bad option as the HX90 is so small and say the RX100m4 with great video and 4K for 5min clips and the best in low light of these smaller cameras - ( I wish the RX100m4 had 24-100mm and Touch LCD and Touch Shutter )
+igetsmart That would be great if the Rx100 would have that =D
GX7, G3X, RX100m3, HX90, RX100m4, Panasonic FZ1000, HX50 - are you sure you couldn't through in a few more cameras? ;-)
As for RAW, on a camera a the small sensor like the HX90 there isn't that much dynamic range to work with. Dave Wyman is the FZ1000 worth a look? Same price range as G7x mark 2?
Hello sir, in which settings you record in sony hx90 please tell me
Have you tried the g9x? Thinking of it but not sure if it drops off to much vs the g7x quality
+LiQuiDTaGe Not tried that one
+Phillip Dorset thanks, I actually tried g7x it is awesome had to return cause of money but found a rx100 at Best Buy for $150 , thanks for the video
No probs!
Hi I'm searching for the best affordable vlogging camera and I came up to you video. I got this 3 cameras. Very useful comparison. Big thanks!
Paul Lech Thats great that it could help you out!
Which one do you think is better for taking pictures ?
+xquisite bong Good question! I'd go for the G7x!
Waoo... Poole quay!!... So good to see the pictures, stayed there 12 yrs back, had also seen the same bike show.
... Love from India!
What do you think about the canon legria mini? I'm also looking for an vlogging camera the s120 is great but it has not the flip display. Do you know any low price vlog cameras?
Derya Knycl The Legria mini is a great logging camera if you like the wide angle! So for low price of with a S120 or just use your smartphone (or the Legria if you like the wide angle)
what camera are you using for the introduction 🤗
hi philip i like your video
i will buy a compact camera
what you suggest
canon g7x mark ii or sony hx90v or canon sx720
i will use the camera mostly for pictures and sometime for video
I don't know the sx720. But I'd go for the G7x because of the bigger sensor. If you need that zoom tho... then go for the hx90v
very good review , you did amazing job in editing , holding two cam at a time was a great idea . i am watching this video in 10/4/16 what do you think Sony RX100 mar 5 will come ? i was very impreasd with sony PDAF duel pixel tech sensor used in samsung galaxy S7 ( IMX260) .what do you think sony will use PDAF in mark 5 ? i currentely have sony rx100 m3 i skipped m4 due to heat and slow contrast detect auto focus ( lens keeps hunting fro and back) i like the auto focus of samsung s7( which is using sony duel pixel pdaf IMX260 sensor ) which is bang on traget no hunting back and fro, but i dont want to invest in s7 just for camera sake , i want some thing dedicated like RX100 Mark 5 ,sowhat do you think when it will come in 2016 . i am into sports and action photo graphy ( just amature ) i like HFR mode i would love 120 fps 1080p extended recording in m5 as transistor node is approching 14nm for BION Z cpu low heat , and great 4k vedeo posiblities like slog 2 and etc
+Apoorva Madhukar No idea what the mk 5 will be like, but I'm sure they will improve on the overheating issue & the AutoFocus ;)
I've been thinking about the Canon s120 or the Canon g7x. Video quality of the g7x is wow. Great video!
+RevIt Gaming thx
Phillip Dorset Just bought the g7x from best buy.

Thanks
+Oz O It's probably broken now...
+Oz O Thats a good question ^^, Did you find it back?
hi so can I say that in terms of photo quality, sony g7x is better then hx90v? but in terms of stablelity hx90v is better then sony g7x?
The G7x is a canon ;)
What y'all came for starts at 4:12 thank me later
can someone know how to fix that low light choppy issue?
Canon G7X looks better picture. Sony's good if you need a zoom. When he says it looks over exposed to me it looked close to perfect
has the hx90 the focus peaking option?
Can someone help me I just purchesed the canon g7x and the quality looks nothing like this one? watch my latest video its like blurry and pixel like? HEEEELP! :(
+ParadaFamily Vlogs Loads of low light filming you have going on! Kind of normal for a compact. Get more light in the shot ;)

Neither of these are quite as good as a camcorder.
finally someone gets it. An inexpensive camcorder will make a better quality video then either of these two cameras. and they almost all come with a mic port too.
Yararlı bir video olmuş kardeşim. Sağolasın
Which is the best for Vlog??????
+yoshiko ssk Both are good, depends if you want that low light performance or the wider zoom.Overall better camera is the G7x
Good video man!
Why the Sony lose frames on low light video?
because it sensor is smaller and the aperture is lower than canon g7x..
Thanks for the vid.
This is Review Gold.
hahaha, dorsetcruises-Product-Placement in the background :D

So every trip you take, you buy a new camera? 😂
Can you please review wx500 by Sony as well? I subbed to you. :)
I Love your Videos :D
***** Great! =D
What a shame about the hx90....looks like Sony are just interested in pushing their customers into an RX100 price point
Türkçe alt yazı eklemelisiniz 😄👍
Hx90 is better
I think your review is good, (3:03), however you slight inability to get words out is annoying, keep up the good work

Nothing was done and the camera is still there . In parallel I wrote an email complaint to Sony
as into them filling blindly repair protocols whereby they did not even read my
complaint telling me to go back to the seller .
The HELL with you SONY CHINA ltd stay away from them they
cheat the public under their " great " corporate logo. If you are
lucky and DSC-HX90V works then is has great features.
But I doubt because also this product is obsolete and no longer manufactured !
Nice ;)
