Jason Newsted (ex Metallica bassist) was the best possible replacement for the band after the death of bassist Cliff Burton in 1986... Even though he was not allowed to contribute much music and his bass tracks were faded out of Metallica's 1988 album 'And justice for all' ('Blackened' was the opening track, 1 of the few songs co -written w/ Newsted) ... Newsted was ball of energy onstage and pushed the other 4 members to keep up w/ him... His bass playing was also different from Cliff Burton (who played bass w/ his fingers); Newsted used a pick playing bass and played tighter rhythms which made Metallica a tighter live unit onstage... It was especially important on the 1991 'black' album which required a solid rhythm section... not just a fast, brutal delivery.
Lars Ulrich (drums) was not a proficient drummer when Metallica started in 1981... but his calling card was making a racket on the drums like Keith Moon of The Who... he said his top 2 drummers were Ian Paice (Deep Purple) for his technical skills, and Phil Rudd (AC/DC) for simplicity and groove... Lars had bassist Cliff Burton to thank when he joined Metallica in 1983 and taught him about song arrangements, rhythm and melody... That was how Lars became Metallica's main arranger - he would work w/ James Hetfield (vocals & guitar) to give a working arrangement to his riffs and give the tempos and rhythms to the songs in rehearsals. His unorthodox drumming style made him one of the stars of Metallica.
After the 'black' album in 1991, Lars seemed to get lazy and started playing w/ a lower drum kit and slow tempos... Later on, fans complained that his drums were too loud in the mix of albums after 2000...
Seattle, 1989 was An amazing show possibly Because it was the perfect mix of talent, rage, grief, booze…and a tiny bit of Peruvian marching powder

Saw them in the justice tour, still the best concert I've been to. It was an indoor venue, my ears were ringing for 3 days.

So glad you beautiful girls are back!! We’ve missed you! Great way to kick it off with my favorite band and concert!! Could you do fade to black from these guys and from the 1991 Moscow concert!!
I’m really glad you guys liked it because when I saw you were doing the live version I was worried you might not like it as much as the other Metallica songs you’ve done because this is a song where the studio version is a much better introduction to the song. This performance is cool, but I don’t think it’s very fitting for a first impression because you can’t really make out any of the lyrics and the riff is pretty hard to distinguish if you’re not already familiar with how it’s supposed to sound. And personally, I don’t think the live version does the chorus justice. The way he delivers the very first word in the chorus, “fire!”, packs much, much more punch than how he says it in the live version. Not to mention, the way the chorus follows the same tune as the beat sounds really cool but doesn’t quite come though the same in the live version. I would definitely suggest listening to that to get a better feel for the song. But seeing as how you mentioned this song making your playlist, I’m sure you’ll hear it, so it’s all good. Either way though, it was a good reaction and I’m glad to see it was one of the first ones you guys did after returning. I look forward to seeing what else you have in store.
We really enjoy live performances because we get a "feel" for their energy and just the raw talent of the band, but like to give it another listen in their studio recording as well! We might just hold off on the playlist for this one and give it another listen on the channel!
