  • The Falklands War took place 40 years ago - but many of those who fought there are still living with the scars of the 10-week conflict with Argentina.
Some of the British veterans have returned for the first time to the islands to mark the anniversary and pay tribute to fallen friends.

Not fairy tales for weak willed adults who're too damn scared of being responsible for themselves and running from the inevitable, trying to comfort yourselves with a supposed higher being.
      What a pitiful joke.
      Celebrating mental illness.
Enjoy talking to yourself and hopefully eventually understanding how pointless it all is, you don't need a god to be a good person, in fact religions are responsible for some of the worst atrocities of humanity.

In Argentina, the feeling for the Malvinas is very strong, although the war can be analyzed from various points of view, such as military and political. It can be said that this war did more damage to the relations of both peoples because even before the war, there were many cultural ties. I only hope that the new generations can change it is a reality because both peoples have a lot in common just as Japan and the USA could have been enemies and today they are allies the same should happen on this side of the South Atlantic

Falklanders are british, falklands islands are an extension of britain, it's nothing like america and japan. America defeated japan and demilitarized them, only allowing them a defensive force and filling the gaps in japans military with their own troops. After the war we gave the Falklands the choice to remain British or join Argentina they all voted unanimously to stay British And like the british i doubt they honestly care if your lot hate them because brits sailed half way around the globe to liberate them after your failed invasion.

The Falklands are, sadly, too easy to armchair judge from afar.
The troops involved were military members. Who swore to protect their country's interests. THEY didn't decide to uphold a 200-year old colonization tradition.
They chose to honor their vows to their line of work, where you sacrifice your life for your country and your fellow soldiers.
The Argentinians, did, too. Just saying.
Whether to enforce 1800s colonial policy comes from their own hearts, or just a tradition/obedience to their country's military orders, is up to them.
Nobody deserves to lose friends or (at least in my case) friends who mean more than family. That's true for both sides.
War is hell. Everyone knows that. But only a few stand up and serve.
My heart goes out to all who lost their lives... but also those who survived and also lost.

The British have plenty, PLENTY of skeletons in their closet. The response to the Irish potato famine, the Opium wars, the Bengal famine... To name but a few. Cruelties perpetrated in the name of empire. BUT the Falkland war was _not_ one of them in my estimation.
Let's not kid ourselves. It was a miscalculated attempt of a fascist military Junta to gain legitimacy in the eyes of the people it dominated, Britain merely responded to aid the citizens that lived on the by then considered economically unviable but culturally relatable barren rocks as any nation would. The people of Port Stanley did not want to be under a government of Buenos Aires, hence I said they were in fact liberated when the British retook the islands. How is that so hard for you to understand? They, the people that actually live there, do not WANT you there, and after the military attempt, I'd say that desire is more than justified. If Argentina had been patient then maybe the Malvinas would've drifted into Argentina's sphere of influence more readily as the British empire continued to wane. Now, there is little chance of that happening, and it's not the fault of British colonialism this time. The blame lies entirely on an Argentinian government that got desperate for a win.

Argentina is the most "succesfull" spanish colonial project, being 80 to 90% european, with its native culture practicaly wiped out.
The native population of the falklands however... are the british, it was empty, and was first settled by english and welsh people, about 40 years before Argentina declared independence from spain
