  • One year on from our visit to the 2020 Parade Of Steam, my observation still holds true - on Father's Day weekend, what a Dad thing it is to entice my son into accompanying me on a dawn raid to witness the Cass Scenic locomotives' clinkin', clankin', whoopin' and hollerin' as they warm up their fittings for the coming excursion season. Although the freight cars watched from the sidelines this year, the crews changed things up a bit with the locomotive movements.
Once again, kudos to all the fine folks at the Cass Scenic Railroad for putting on a great event!
For more information on trips, special events, and such, check out their website at www.casstrain.com.
0:00 - Shall We Gather At The Depot?
The locomotives file in from the enginehouse and gather in front of the depot to begin the parade. Shay 4 is first, followed by Climax 9 and Shays 5, 11, and 2.
    7:51 - One At A Time, Please
The parade kicks off as the locomotives pull forward individually.
    13:27 - A One And A Two...
The locomotives return to the depot. Shay 4 leads solo, followed by the 9 and 11 running side by side and the 5 and 2 doing the same.
    15:07 - The 2-3 Split
The 2 and 11 pull forward together on one track, while the 5, 9, and 4 follow close behind on the other track. The group back up for another run in the same manner before reassembling for the finale.
    21:05 - All Together Now...
The quintupleheader attempts to wake the dead - not only in West Virginia, but the surrounding states as well. Sometimes, it pays to keep the camera rolling for a bit.

I must have been a railway worker in a past life because i love the thunderous resonant sound of steam whistles.

Awesome stuff. I enjoyed every minute of it. I really adore the Shay locomotives. They're truly wonderments in mechanical ingenuity.

Thanks! One of these days, I hope they're able to bring the Heisler over and do a tripleheader with all 3 geared types. I'm happy to watch whatever they've got though. :)

21:46 *WHO AGREES THATS THE BEST WHISTLE EVER FROM NUMBER 4?!*

I haven't recorded Cass enough to make an informed decision. Clearly I need to do more field research on this. :)

Thanks! Despite the challenging weather and the, ahem, 'human interest', it was a good time.

    0:43 what whistle is this?

I'm not enough of a whistle scholar to say, so I'll defer to someone who knows the Cass locos and the possible whistles that number 4 could have been wearing.

Awesome video! Something tells me that Shay 11’s whistle is the modified C&O 6 chime. Yes it sounds like a Reading 6 chime but it look closely and it doesn’t look like a Reading 6 Chime. But that’s just me.

Thanks! I have no clue on the whistles other than recalling a couple of other folks in the photo line discussing which locomotive was wearing what that day, so I'll take your word for it. :D

What mic did you use for this video?

Canon SM-V1. The original soundtrack is 5.1-channel Dolby AC3.

The names of the different parts of the video sound weird.

    • @FastFlyingVirginian
      @FastFlyingVirginian  4 месяца назад

Not so weird when you realize they are references to the engines gathering at the depot, then running one at a time, then running one followed by two pairs, then running one pair and one trio, and finally running all together.

Personally I have never been to Bald Knobb on that rr.

Well worth the trip, I went to Bald Knob on my first ride in 2005. I'm looking forward to taking another ride soon - this time, recording in HD instead of on 8mm tape. :D

Yea, at the 8:00 minute mark the Guy in the Green thought he was the only person there 🤣

The 'human interest' was the topic of much 'discussion' in the line where I was. I was able to cut quite a bit out though. The kids around 17:45, I didn't mind at all.
