Great video, FastFlyingVirginian. I would love to visit this tourist railroad in West Virginia. They have great Shay locomotives and their Climax No. 9 as well.

This was my first time back in 15 years; it's been far too long. Hopefully the next visit is sooner.

Good stuff! I was there that day as well! The Climax definitely had more thunder than the rest.

Thanks! The train I rode on my first visit in 2005 had a Shay and the Heisler, so seeing the Climax in action 'completed the set' for me, so to speak.

How many crew men were needed for that!?

    • @FastFlyingVirginian

10, at a minimum. At least one of the engines had a third riding along shooting video.

Good question. I know Heisler 6 was up in Durbin, not sure where WM 6 was though.

What do you recon the pulling power on the quintuple header is?

    • @FastFlyingVirginian

Cass has probably got tractive effort numbers for each locomotive listed somewhere, but I'd say around 200,000 ft. lbs. Only catch is, it's all low-speed stump-pulling oomph, like a diesel 4WD with a granny gear.

@@FastFlyingVirginian Oh yeah, I know it's all slow, but they were never made for speed either. I don't know what grade Climaxes can go up, but I think I read somewhere that Shay's can go up 12-15% grades while loaded. Which is just crazy.
