Jefferson Morley is a veteran Washington investigative reporter and the author of the 2017 St. Martin’s Press book, The Ghost: The Secret Life of CIA Spymaster James Jesus Angleton. The book sheds new light on Angleton’s close relationship with Israeli intelligence, citing such cases as Israel’s 1967 attack on the USS Liberty and the diversion of U.S. government-owned weapons-grade uranium from Apollo, PA to Israel in the 1960s.
A native of Minneapolis, Morley attended Yale University and worked as an editor at The New Republic, The Nation and Spin Magazine before joining The Washington Post in 1992 where he worked for 15 years. His reporting has also appeared in The New York Review of Books, Reader’s Digest, The New York Times Book Review, Rolling Stone, the Los Angeles Times, The American Prospect, and Salon.
Morley is the author two other books, Our Man in Mexico: Winston Scott and the Hidden History of the CIA, and Snow-Storm in August: Washington City, Francis Scott Key, and the Forgotten Race Riot of 1835.

The relationship was forged on emerging interests that developed over time.Yes Truman pushed State who were against recognizing Israel but remember that the ban on arms deals to Israel really didn't change till after 1967 before which Israel had to scrounge from Brits and French.But really CIA and State weren't sure where Israel was headed ideologically.Stalin supported Israel because he thought it would possibly be a benefit after the Brits left Mandate Palestine.But the West got the report of Khrushchev's denunciation of Stalin through the Mossad Israel's first big international info coup.After Nasser and Soviets US got into bed with Israel that grew stronger.One cannot think that the US increasing support was done out of sentiment but results that benefited the US.If you think of people who were at Foggy Bottom and the intelligence works and the antisemitism it was out of love of Jews .As with everything having to do with Israel one needs to leave the emotional bias for or against the State and look at the evidence without the love and hate,conspiracy and apology that seems to cloud a true view of the relationship.
