If you drain the old electrolyte out of the battery, flush it with distilled water, then refill it with fresh electrolyte, there is a high probability that it will work again. It's worth a try.
She looks like she has seen the Seven Seas. I like unusual lanterns like this. Makes for an interesting restoration subject. Well done, and yes, brass deserves to be displayed in its natural glory.
Ever heard of a thing called planned obsolescence? It started when a bunch of major lightbulb manufacturers got together and agreed they would make their lightbulbs last much shorter, in order to make more money. They also bought out all the smaller companies that didn't go along with them to dominate the market. Lightbulbs used to last forever. That's a bit of an exaggeration of course, but yes, I don't know when these lightbulbs were made before then, but it's not impossible.
I am not that familiar with maritime artifacts but that is a beautiful old piece and good that you saved it. Amazing that the original light bulbs still operate. Excellent work!
Beautiful job of restoration! I have an old sailing ships lantern that used whale oil and was hoisted up the tallest mast at night. I won't sell it! It's a thing of beauty to. Wonderful job on the old battery too.
S.A.F.T. must have made excellent cases for their batteries: I expected this one to have been eaten through by the acids that appeared to have leaked out, but as your shot at the end shows, the case is still in splendid condition. Nice job, will be watching more of your work 👍
Yes I absolutely love brass brightness, as well as fresh, bright copper and all highly polished metals. I'm planning to buy a polishing wheel for the bench grinder at the plant just so I can make a few things shiny after watching so many awesome restorations
I really enjoyed watching this video as old electrical items are of particular interest to me, and details on SAFT and their connection to French railways especially so. Thank you for your excellent videos. Best wishes from Oxfordshire, Uk.
This is like the sixth restoration RUclipsr I’ve watched and everyone of them polish the brass. I personally love the look of antiqued brass it’s character. And I know everyone has their own person taste. I just can’t believe that of the hundreds of videos and several restoration RUclipsrs I’ve watch not one has left the natural patina.
Very nice work. I like the fact that you don't needlessly change things for the sake of it, and only when required (ie, the battery). A lot of people would have tried to add USB charging, LiIon batteries, LED's etc. I would not have liked that. So thank you for keeping what you can intact. I just wish things were still made this well.
The ones who down voted this are other restoration Chanels this was awesome and skill and creativity is always involved in any restoration. Thanks for sharing
Very nice restoration work... Reminds me of the old railroad lanterns that I like. I am surprised that the lens was in such nice shape. It would certainly have been quite visible from afar. Well done!
Good luck
Looks like it could go back into service now, not much for area lighting but definitely as a warning beacon. Nicely done sir very nicely done indeed. Thanks and remember Texas is watching.
mast top anchor light most likely. Drop anchor and you are legally required to have a white light at the top of your mast overnight. So any boats coming in after dark know you are there.
Think i would have gone with a sealed lead acid batter with a fly lead and socket for recharging it . Looks like it would have been a mast light with those brackets , nice restoration saved from the scrap heap
Nothing more relaxing than watching someone's fingers move steadily toward a saw blade 😁
Ha.... Ha ...
U can put your finger into a saw blade😂😂😂
Please use push sticks near saw blades. That segment made me as nervous as a cow with a buck-toothed calf.
He will have a close call or worse and then he will realise. It happened to me and i dont go anywhere near it now
I was so tense!

I believe it had holes in the battery casing.

I actually really like seeing and learning about old batteries. That was a nice bonus.
This is why I love antiques so much. Older things were made to last.
Your comment about the quality of French workmanship is on the mark, you just proved that! Tres bien and thank you.
I was shocked that the bulbs still worked after all that time. You made it into an art piece! Really beautiful.

Old incandescent bulbs are incredibly resilient things, especially running at low currents.

Wonderful job on the old battery too.

That was a beautiful restoration. I was quite surprised that the glass was still intact. 👏🏻
Not only are the restorations really interesting but the cinematography and audio is actually really great too!! Nice work!
